here's my gift for @arhintess for this year's @tmnt-secret-santa-2024! happy holidays!

this is a little snippet i wrote to get the creative juices flowing for my second gen (not) turtles au. i dont think its going to be part of the final piece (whenever it gets finished), but i didnt want it to just sit and rot. enjoy <3

     Donnie lay curled on his bed. He was wrapped tightly in his blankets with his knees tucked against his chest. The pain was there, it always was, but sometimes this position helped lessen it.

     This time it didn’t.

     Donnie grunted in frustration and slowly shifted his torso, careful not to move his legs and lower back. It still didn’t stop the pain from flaring up, but he knew it was lesser than it would have been had he moved his legs.

     He tucked his forehead into his knees and let a sob escape his throat. He hated this. He hated sitting in the dark with the pain as his company, but he couldn’t let anyone in. He hated the way their brows would always furrow, and their voices would soften upon seeing him like this. Sympathy was fine when it caused someone to help, but Donnie knew, and so did everyone in his family, that there was nothing they could do to alleviate this agony. 

     He missed Newt. He tried not to think about how much of his child’s life he was missing out on because he was stuck in his bed, trying not to break down from the pain. He knew that no one would blame him. This wasn’t his fault. Still, he blamed himself constantly. This was from something that happened to him. He could have done something. He let those thoughts, the memories of his injury, run around his head so often. If he had just been paying more attention. If he had just been stealthier, faster. Maybe then he would never have gotten hurt. Maybe then he’d be able to chase Newt around the Lair when he wanted to. Maybe he’d finally feel like a good dad. Maybe–

     He shook his head in an attempt to clear his thoughts. The sudden, jerky motion stirred up the burning in his legs. He rubbed at his eyes. Maybe if he was stronger, he’d have been able to fight through his pain and come up with a cure for his nerve damage already. He pulled his hand away from his eyes when he felt the water of his tears soak through the material of his glove. So what if he could fight through the pain anyway? He’d never be able to make a cure. Donnie’s specialty was with robotics anyway, not biology. He knew there was a difference. 

     He raised his vision and stared at the wall across from him, at the photos he had hung on it. He saw nothing but smiling faces staring back at him, from his siblings to his fathers to the picture in the middle of him and Newt. The subjects were all smiles and laughter, as was the image of Donnie was wrangling a wriggling Newt. They had tried to get a professional photo taken by a yokai photographer from the Hidden City, but Newt saw every effort to get them to stay still as a game. Eventually they won and got their photo. Donnie gifted the nice one to his dad and kept the ‘reject’ photo for himself, feeling it better showed Newt’s lively personality.

     Donnie smiled softly at the memory and let memories of his kid wash over him, filling his mind with happy distractions as he finally drifted off to sleep.

for some context here, donnie has nerve pain, mostly in his lower back and legs from when he got ripped from the kraang ship before he could use the disengage features. he has flare ups every now and again and he feels guilty about it. of course, no one is mad at him other than himself. Newt is his kid. they are a kangaroo who got bit by an oozesquito while in donnie's arms (or hands, as they were very very small when he found them)
