idk i think a narrative that has a light skinned dude burn hundreds of dark skinned people alive because he was told to and then focuses on how actually he felt really bad about that and he's gonna keep working for his fucked up government to uhhhh. change things someday or something from within (there's an ishvalan soldier who basically does the same as him as if to validate him) and then it actually ends up working through highly convoluted means

except..................... fma doesn’t focus on how he feels bad about it, it focuses on a kid and his brother using alchemy to get their bodies back. there are parts were he’s portrayed as feeling bad about it and how he’s trying to atone (eg his entire character arc), just like there are parts portraying the damage he & other state alchemists did on the people of ishval & how they’re being murdered in vengeance (aka scar’s entire narrative arc). i mean, what else are parts about roy supposed to.... focus on... other than the genocide and the present day?

also, i’m not sure what else they’re supposed to be doing with the philosophers stone other than use it to help in rebuilding ishval (which presumably roy regaining his sight would help to do)? throw it in the ocean? give it to ishvalans who would refuse to use it because alchemy is blasphemous to ishbala? and are we really gonna debate the realistic-ness of the final battle working out the way it did in a series that’s predicated on two kids losing their bodies because they tried to resurrect their dead mom?

people can have problems with how roy is portrayed, but i’m definitely not one of them. i think you’re focusing a little too much on this ‘lightskinned dude murders a bunch of brown people’ thing because like, would it have been better for him to murder lightskinned people? if brown ppl were murdering white people? if brown ppl were murdering brown people? i think it puts the responsibility squarely at the feet of white ppl as perpetrators of genocide and imperialism, as it should. at no point is he ever justified in doing it and, again, it’s consistently portrayed as something that there’s no way he can atone fully for and is gonna spend the entire rest of his life paying for.

Zyxyz’s Comprehensive Fanfic Rec List: 11/17 Update

A bit less than four years ago, I created a simple Word document to list my favorite fanfiction, so that if I wanted to reread something I could easily find it again. One year ago today, I uploaded it as a proper multifandom rec list, having realized how huge the scale of it had gotten and its potential as more than just a reference for my own use. And now, it’s time for the semiannual public version update once again, bringing the uploaded file up-to-date with my continuously-updated personal copy.

With this expansion, the list goes from 1,228 to 1,370 total fics, from 81 to 86 fandoms represented, and from ~15.2 million to over 17.1 million words. Updated links below:

austen, shelley, and shakespeare!!!

Austen: 3 favourite characters? 

Idk if it’s because of the lack of a visual aid but I don’t get very attached to book characters even if I loved them while reading. There are some exceptions though (though, one of those characters is from a book I read recently, and the other from a book I’m reading now so maybe they’re not exceptions after all..)

- Libby Day from Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

- Merrycat from We Have Always Lived in The Castle by Shirley Jackson (my main blogs icon!)

- Zosia from The Crimson Empire series by Alex Marshall (though listening to the audiobook I maintain it should be spelled Zousha..But apparently it’s a real name so what do I know!!)

Actually turns out I can go on when I think about it there’s plenty of characters I like... 

Shelley: 3 characters you dislike? This is even harder! I mean there are plenty of mildly annoying characters but characters I actively dislike...hmmm..

- Deacon in Threshold & Low Red Moon by Kaitlin R Kiernan....he was just a dick and kinda homophobic too...Most of Low Red Moon all he did was making his best the plot wouldn’t move along and refusing to accept obvious facts. Also his self pity because his wife makes money and he doesnt...boo hoo....poor little man... The only good thing about him is that he made his wife look good by comparison. 

-Kathleen from The Mermaids Daughter by Ann Claycomb She’s a self admitted drama queen and if it was only that itd be fine its not like its completely unjustified but shes so completely ungrateful to her girlfriend who does so much for her. Like!! She didn’t deserve her! And then she just fucked off in to the sea which I GUESS it made sense/ she didnt have a real choice but she could have pretended to be sadder to leave her at least. Like imagine putting together an award winning opera literally jut for ur gf and she fucks off into the sea and doesnt even seem sad about it. 

-I completely forgot her name but the homophobic girl in the Pegasi And Prefect series she was terrible lmao hey at least she’s a villain unless the two above

Shakespeare: A book that made you laugh? That’s rather rare but surprisingly I have two in recent memory!

First one is A war in Crimson Embers by Alex Marshall, that I’m reading currently it makes me laugh a lot and makes me look like a crazy person laughing to herself bc I’m listening to the audiobook while walking. It’s one of those books where everyone is cracking wise all the time but instead of being obnoxious it somehow worked for me. It actually feels natural because I too make jokes at inopportune times (or at least, think about them, since half of those jokes are in the narrative head voices).

Second one is Castle Hangnail by Ursula Vernon like SURE it’s for kids but kids have a great sense of humor okay. Also its adorable and funny in a very innocent way that made me feel nostalgic and good. I love that book..
