We uncovered these photos from the early days of the BLM's Burns District. Located in eastern Oregon, the Burns District manages over three million acres of public lands starting at the Oregon-Nevada border and heading up to the Blue Mountains. Some highlights include Steens Moutain, the Donner and Blitzen National Wild and Scenic River, and the Diamond Craters Outstanding Natural Area. In total, Burns features 23 Wilderness Study Areas which protect the natural values of over one million acres.

Steens Mountain Wilderness by Bureau of Land Management Oregon and Washington Via Flickr: The United States Congress designated the Steens Mountain Wilderness in 2000 and it now has over 170,200 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Oregon and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Steens Mountain is located in Oregon's high desert is one of the crown jewels of the state's wildlands. It is some of the wildest and most remote land left in Oregon. Opportunities for recreation on Steens Mountain are as plentiful as they are widespread. Popular activities include camping, picnicking, sightseeing, and exploring the open country on foot and horseback. Hiking is available in all areas and trailheads exist near Page Springs and South Steens Campgrounds, as well as Wildhorse Overlook and Pike Creek. Visitors photograph landscapes, wildlife and wildflowers, and catch redband trout in the Donner und Blitzen River. Others enjoy hunting for wild game and visiting special places, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. For more information contact: 28910 Hwy 20 West Hines, OR 97738 541-573-4400 [email protected]
Wish I could make a trip there this year, but that is not on the agenda. It is a haunting place

OSU Special Collections & Archives : Commons - Town of Blitzen, Oregon, in the Catlow Valley on the west side of Steens Mountain
Original Collection: Edwin Russell Jackman Photographic Collection
Blitzen was one of many settlements that arose in the Catlow Valley in the late 1800's. The town was named after the Donner and Blitzen River which flows nearby. (Donner und Blitzen is German for "Thunder and Lightning"; the river was named in 1864 by Captain George Currey as he crossed the stream during a raging thunderstorm.) Sources vary as to the year in which the post office at Blitzen was established. One record lists the date as 1888, another 1915. It is believed, however, that a man named Stewart became the town's first postmaster. Stewart operated a prosperous general store that eventually fell into the hands of Robert Bradeen. Several residences, another store, a school, a saloon, and some minor buildings were constructed at Blitzen over the years. Gradually the town's population dwindled to zero; the post office was closed in February of 1943. Many of the original structures at Blitzen are still standing, although all are in an advanced state of deterioration. From the Burns Times-Herald May 20, 1987
