        he was writing out the charts for the new number --- sat on the floor with the orchestra in his mind swelling around him, plucking the instrument he wants from the ranks and letting it flow onto the paper, hand working almost of its own accord --- but donny reaches the end of a phrase and looks up, and...wow. donny’s always had too great an opinion of his own looks, bobby soxers swooning at his charms, but when julia’s in a room he just pales beside her, doesn’t matter if she’s all dolled up for a concert, or like this, wearing his shirt, hair loose. if anything, this is more beautiful, ‘cause it’s private.

        maybe they haven’t made it to the movies ( yet ), but she’s a leading lady, no doubt. he’s surprised the studios aren’t snapping her up.

Historical Headcanons- Donny Novitski

Donny was born Donald Luca Novitski on October 3rd, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Donny’s mother (Flora Novitski) was the daughter of Italian immigrants, who came to the US in 1899. His father (John Novitski) was the son of Polish immigrants, who came to the US in 1895. Donny was never particularly close with either side of his family- both of his mother’s parents died when he was a toddler, and on his father’s side his grandfather died before he was born while his grandmother died when he was 10 (she was the one who taught him how to make perogies).

John had just turned 18 when the United States entered World War I in 1917, and he joined up fairly quickly. He was sent to France, where he quickly discovered the horrors of trench warfare. He was a different person when he got back- quiet, withdrawn, aloof, and generally distrustful. This greatly impacted his relationship with Donny in later years.

Flora was the one who first discovered Donny’s musical talent- she realized that he could match pitch perfectly when he was 5 and so she bought him his first accordion as an inexpensive way to allow him to express himself musically. When he moved on to the piano, he played on the one at his family’s church- his parents couldn’t afford one, especially not in the middle of the Great Depression.

Flora became sick with cancer in 1934, and she eventually passed away in 1936. Before she died, however, she got together enough money to buy Donny his own piano (although it was second-hand). After her death, Donny and his father became even more distant from each other (they both also stopped going to church).

Donny began to pursue a career in music almost immediately after his mother died. He quickly moved on from playing the accordion at weddings as a favor to family friends, to playing for money, and then to playing the piano in bars and nightclubs all over Cleveland.

Donny was 18 in December of 1941 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Shortly after that he was drafted into the army, and was sent to Camp Shelby in Mississippi to begin training as a member of the 37th Infantry Division.

At Camp Shelby, men were assigned to companies based on their hometowns, and that is how Donny and Michael eventually met each other. They became fast friends, and soon began to talk about starting a band together when the war was over.

The 37th Infantry Division left the United States fro Fiji on May 26th, 1942. From Fiji they moved on to Guadalcanal and New Georgia in 1943, and then they were sent to Bougainville Island. While they were there, in January of 1944, Donny got word that his father had died in November after suffering a heart attack. Despite the fact that he and his father hadn’t been close, the news hit him hard. Michael tried to help, until he was killed in March.

Donny spent some time in a field hospital after Michael’s death, being treated for shock and burst eardrum from the grenade explosion. After about a week the doctors said they couldn’t do anything more for him, and he was sent back to his division where he stayed until he was discharged at the end of the war.

Name: Donald Novitski, or Donny Nova

Age: Unknown, likely born in the 1920's. By best guess, he was 17 in 1941 and after four years he would be 21 in 1945, we never learn his birthday nor is anything confirmed.

Occupation: Musician, band leader, formally Private First Class.

Personality: William James approach, he is adapted to a situation he is no longer in (War).

Position on Maslow's hierarchy of needs: Starts the show at bottom (Basic survival needs, as the show begins with Donny cowering to hide from a barrage) , works up to love, which he seems from Julia, the female lead of the show.

Diagnosis: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with possible comorbid Depression or Substance Abuse.

Past history: From Cleveland, Polish/Italian, played weddings at 7 years old on the accordion, then the piano at 9. He started writing his own music at 12. He was playing most clubs in Cleveland at 17, when presumably the war came to America and he enlisted right off the bat (This is unknown, but can be guessed by the line "Three years and eight months to fight my way back" from Right This Way). He served in the Pacific, they mention specific locations like Bogervill, Soloman Islands, and Manila, as well as his devison number, 37th. It is explicit in the show that he blames himself for his best friend's death, since he died trying to find a grenade Donny dropped. Has a bit of a drinking problem, but is sober enough to function and later in the show denies a drink, but earlier drinks almost constantly. Though he seems well adjusted, especially compared to another character who is never not drunk.

Symptoms: Insomnia, "I'd like a good night's sleep/Is that to much to ask?" And "Donny doesn't sleep because the nightmares come" Two panic attacks, both also on screen and included in the songs "Just like it was before" and "Right this way", word-I-can't-spell-but-means-very-bad survivor's guilt characterized by being possibly suicidal at the beginning and wishing he could have died in his best friend's place. "How he made it out but left his buddy there" (Welcome Home). As well as the above mentioned alcohol consumption.

Treatment options: He would probably benefit best from having a sympathetic listener and help with dealing with symptoms. He also greatly benefited from having a social group of people going through similar struggles, and they find comfort and support from one another. 

Personal review: I think that the writers did an amazing job portraying every character in the musical. Input from vetern groups was heavily considered as well as respect. The musical was the first ever to be verified by Got Your 6, and it has received a great amount of praise for being realistic in it's portrayals. It's also interesting in the way that side characters idolize each character's struggles in a way, which is pretty historically accurate as well. Donny doesn't fall into any stereotypes, and the performance given by Corey Cott is heartfelt and absolutely gut wrenching. But I feel that Donny is an accurate character and he genuinely feels like a human person.

The band had been preparing for the gigs they had this week. Also getting ready for the contest coming up. They had to get as much practice in as they could if they wanted to win this thing. And that was just what they wanted to do. With their band established and the message they wanted to send, with enough practice, he was sure they could MAKE IT.

That meant MORE HOURS of practices and little to not days off, which there was conflict about at first, but they managed to settle on things. This was important to all of them, and that meant they couldn’t afford to slack off.

Donny and the band was always grateful for whatever audience they could gather. The more the merrier, and if they could get more and more people coming to their shows, it would definitely be an extra boost of confidence they all seemed to need right about now. They’d just finished their last set before Donny got off stage, grabbing himself a drink and making his way over to the table where Z sat.

Sliding a coffee cup her way with a grin at their compliment on their songs and it being INSPIRING for their drawings. That was certainly the confidence booster he needed. He was always unsure about new songs they preformed during their practices. So any feedback was welcome. He was just glad to hear POSITIVE things.

“Glad the music’s got you inspired. I know how it feels like to be in the ZONE when you’re workin’ on somethin’. You don’t ever gotta apologize for that, Z.” He’s quick to assure them. A soft chuckle followed as he nodded his head in response. “’Course, figured you could use it. You’ve been here for a while. Looked like you could use a BREAK as much as the rest of us.”

there are so many times when donny’s explicitly dissociating or struggling to stop his wartime memories and it hurts.
