Ngl, the inheritance games get so much funnier when you remember that at the start of the second book, it's only been like three weeks since Avery inherited. So whenever she's all "How long will Jameson and i be able to resist the tension between us??😓" and "Ever since we met, we've been locked in a deadly dance, both pretending it means nothing 😔😔😔" it's just like. Girl. Be so fr you've known him less than a month.

Tumblr media
"Do you see what I'm seeing?"
There was a thump as something was dropped onto the table. Avery didn't open her eyes. She didn't need to, to know what Alisa had meant. She had already known, much earlier, before the press had even managed to write on the incident.
Brandon had returned home with a bruised cheek and a cut lip. "You should see the other guy," he'd said with a laugh, when she had asked him what on earth had happened.
Beside her, she felt movement as Jameson leaned forward to pick up the newspaper. "HAWTHORNE HEIRESS' SON STIRS UP TROUBLE IN SCHOOL: DISGRACE TO THE FAMILY?" He read aloud.
At that, Avery's eyes finally flew open.
"What did they call him?" She wasted no time in grabbing the newspaper from Jameson.
"A disgrace." Alisa stated, in that matter-of-fact tone she always used. Avery glared at her. She couldn't help it.
"And you agree?"
Alisa didn't betray any emotion. "Not necessarily. But I do think it's time the two of you have a little chat with him, considering the fact that I've had to pull so many strings so many times to prevent something like this from happening." She sighed. "And yet, it has happened."
"I did talk to him," Avery replied, "but he was so adamant with the idea that he hadn't done anything wrong."
Alisa gave her a look. "The press seem to think otherwise."
Avery turned to look at Jameson, who had suddenly become silent. "What are you thinking of?"
"Alisa...", he began, "what do you mean by I've had to pull so many strings so many times?"
The Alisa Look made its appearance again. "What else, Jameson? This isn't the first time your son has done something to cause havoc amongst the press."
Avery and Jameson exchanged looks. What did she mean by "not the first time"? There hadn't been any other times, not that they knew of.
Brandon had never been problematic – rebellious, sure, but didn't every teenager have that phase?
The prolonged silence was broken by Alisa's next statement. "I'm guessing the golden boy act didn't work so well for him after all."
Jameson calmly ignored it, but Avery didn't miss the insinuation.
"When have there been other times?"
Jameson had gotten up and started pacing, retracing his memory, no doubt. When Avery had told him about what had happened, about Brandon physically attacking one of the seniors in his school, he had found it peculiar. He had taught his son enough for him to hold his own in a fight, but he had never seen any aggressive behaviour displayed by him.
He couldn't think of "other times" Brandon had acted up. And he never missed anything, so it was almost impossible that Alisa had had to "pull so many strings" as she said.
Almost.
"What golden boy act?" Avery asked, in quick succession.
Alisa sighed, seemingly a little annoyed at their questions.
"I'll answer Jameson's question first." She took a deep breath.
"There was the time he was involved in a brawl in a bar late at night. He's lucky he escaped unscathed, but not before someone took pictures of his involvement."
"Sorry?"
"What?"
Both Avery and Jameson asked those questions in unison.
"You heard me."
"Not to mention, the fact that he's underage..." Alisa muttered under her breath.
"Also, the time he decided to skip school and go skateboarding. That's not even the worst part... he only piqued the interest of the paparazzi because he graffitied the walls with spray paint."
Alisa didn't even give them the chance to cut in. She ended her little speech with "Gee, I wonder where or who he learnt all of this from", pointedly looking at none other than Jameson Winchester Hawthorne.
He lifted both hands, innocence colouring his features. "I promise, ever since Brandon was born, I've been nothing but behaved."
"I'm trying to be a good father, Alisa."
With a raise of one of her perfectly arched brows, he quickly added, "Trying. I'm trying. And you have to admit that I'm much more behaved than I was five years ago."
"Alisa." Avery said, getting her attention again. "What. Did. You. Mean. By. Golden. Boy. Act?"
She was confused, getting more agitated by the minute, and it wasn't a good thing. This wasn't Brandon. She knew him. She should know him.
She looked over at Jameson, locking eyes with him, and even if he was doing very well with keeping up that poker face of his, she could see something behind those green eyes.
"Well, you two don't seem to know a thing about what he's been up to," she said, "and I'm quite surprised, really."
"Oh yeah, Alisa, we don't know a thing about what he's been up to–" Avery was cut off by Jameson, and he finished her question perfectly.
"–but how do you know what he's been up to? And why didn't you inform us about any of this before, seeing as he is our son?" Avery had never dreamed that she would see any sort of likeness between Jameson and Grayson, but here it was. The tone. The power radiating off the words.
"I don't know, Avery, Jameson. Maybe it's because I've been so busy with work, and studying, and handling the firm, and trying to make sure the press doesn't target the Hawthorne family with pointless accusations." Sarcasm laced her words. Now that Avery really looked at her, she could see her eyebags.
She felt a little guilty, but before she could say anything, Jameson beat her to it. "You haven't answered our first question. How do you know all of this?"
"A tip." She replied promptly. "Someone has been tipping me off on what the press is choosing to report on."
"Who–"
"Not a threat. I hired them, to help me keep an eye on the Hawthorne children. The ones living here anyway." She rolled her eyes after that last sentence. Her meaning was clear, because Brandon was the only Hawthorne child living in Hawthorne House. Her use of plural alluded to another Hawthorne who had been a child years ago. Jameson.
"Fine. But next time, it would be best if you informed either me or Avery immediately if there are any problems concerning our son."
"Since when did you become Grayson?" Alisa asked, eyebrow arched, once again.
Avery didn't expect his reply. He and Alisa had never been on the best of terms, and she knew that Jameson thought she was over the top and too controlling sometimes. He once said she had the possibility of giving Grayson a run for his money.
"Since I decided that I couldn't trust you." He didn't even glance at Alisa after that.
"Now, where is he? I'm going to go talk to him."
Avery turned to look at him, and she saw resoluteness. "I'm coming with you."
Tumblr media
They didn't find him anywhere in or within the vicinity of Hawthorne House. He wasn't in sight, not in his room, not in the gardens, not even in the secret passageways. He didn't like those passageways, and that was the only thing that made him different from his father.
Avery and Jameson regrouped in the Great Room, one of them frustrated and the other in deep thought.
Someone walked in through the door.
"How's my favourite Mystery couple doing?"
Xander Hawthorne.
What was he doing here? Avery asked him exactly that.
"I hear you require my humble assistance to find my favourite nephew."
Jameson raised a brow. "Your favourite nephew? Didn't you say that you wouldn't choose favourites?"
Xander chose to ignore the question, locking eyes with Avery.
She blew out a gust of air. "Tell me what I think you're going to tell me."
"What do you think I'm going to tell you?"
"That–"
"Wait!" Xander dramatically held up a hand.
Confusion flitted across Avery's face. Jameson yawned as he watched the exchange.
"We'll say it together!"
A sigh. "Fine, Xan."
"3... 2... 1..."
"You bugged his phone."
"I bugged his phone."
A beat of silence, then Jameson spoke up.
"Tell us where he is."
Tumblr media
"He keeps switching his base." Xander huffed, having walked two rounds around half the perimeter of the Black Wood. He held the tracking device with his left hand, and with his right, he wiped some sweat off his brow. "It's almost like he knows that we're here, looking for him."
"Not almost." Jameson mumbled.
"Ditch your phone," he continued, directing the order to Xander, "because he might have bugged yours too."
"You taught him how to do it when he was a kid, and Brandon doesn't forget. He probably knows you have him bugged but kept the bug, to toy with you."
Xander looked offended. "No one toys with Xanderman and gets away with it!"
"Xanderman?" Jameson laughed. "Like Super Jameson and Doctor Nashtopus and Graysonater?"
"Exactly like Super Jameson and Doctor Nashtopus and Graysonater."
"Though... I think this is all I can do," he sighed, thrusting the tracking device at Jameson's chest, "this is your turf."
Jameson caught it without blinking. "Let's go," he told Avery, reaching for her hand.
She took it, and they set off together, fingers intertwined.
"Good luck, travellers," Xander called.
Jameson wondered if they would really need luck.
Tumblr media
It was the sound of skin thumping against wood that revealed his position. Brandon stood in the waning evening light, his shirt gone and the muscles of his back rippling. He wore boxing gloves and was punching all the trees he could reach.
If he could sense his parents some ways behind him, he didn't show it. He kept right on punching trees. It was a wonder they were all still standing, even when their branches shook with every blow, and leaves fell to the ground, pleading with him to stop.
Jameson put a finger to his lips, warning Avery to not make a sound. He didn't like seeing Brandon like this. He didn't like it because he knew the kind of headspace someone who punched trees was in, and from everything Alisa told them, they didn't know what else he was capable of. How could he have missed it? Had he failed being a father?
No. Hawthornes didn't fail. He was going to make this right.
Jameson didn't waste a second. "Stay here," he whispered, squeezing Avery's hand. Knowing her protests were coming, he put a finger to her lips. "Let me try."
The intensity shining in his eyes somehow communicated what he wanted to say but didn't know how to and somewhat convinced her, though she didn't look too happy about it. She dragged his hand away. "I'll let you try, but after I think it's time for me to make an appearance, I will."
"Such the negotiator, Heiress." He smirked.
He considered. He didn't want Avery to get hurt – not by actions but by words. He hated to admit it but Alisa was right. Brandon had been a true "golden boy" as far as they could tell. He was polite, he never snapped at either of them, he was respectful. Sure, he could be sarcastic and snarky, but it was always in a good-natured way. Something must have changed for him to behave this way. For him to keep things from them. Yet, he knew how much their son meant to Avery. He knew she wasn't going to yield, to let him be the only one to talk to Brandon.
"You have yourself a deal." He gave her a quick peck on the forehead, lingering for a moment.
"Are you going to come out, or are we going to have to play hide and seek?"
Jameson wasn't taken by surprise that Brandon had noticed their presence.
"Which one would you prefer?" He countered, stepping forward from their "hiding place".
"I'm busy."
"Too busy for a chat with your old man?"
"Firstly, we both know this is not going to be a chat. Secondly, since when did you start calling yourself old?" Brandon said this without stopping his attacks, throwing punch after punch.
Jameson sidestepped his inference and question. "This forest will hate you when you're done."
"Not too different from the rest of the world." Brandon replied, not missing a beat. "Besides, don't tell me you haven't done this before. And don't tell me this forest doesn't hate you too."
"I haven't told you any of those things."
Brandon finally stopped.
"You don't need to," he panted. "I know."
"But someone has told me the things you've done." Jameson continued.
"And would you believe me if I told you I didn't do the things they said I did?"
"You don't need to tell me. I know." He reiterated his son's words from earlier.
Brandon gave a short laugh. "Two can play that game, huh?"
The corners of Jameson's lips tilted up. "Two can play that game."
It was what they always said to each other, when Brandon was growing up.
"Make that three." Avery stepped out from the shadows.
"This isn't a chat after all, then. Let's get on with it, tell me what you know." His tone wasn't hostile, and it wasn't defeated either. Avery knew he would defend his actions... she just needed to know why.
"I'm not going to tell you anything, Brandon. But I am going to ask you something." She took a deep breath.
"What's going on?"
"I'm just blowing off some steam," he shrugged, "and don't worry, mom, I'm wearing boxing gloves. Skin's fine." Brandon knew how much Avery liked to fuss about any of his injuries. The day he returned home with that bruised eye, she hadn't stopped replacing his ice packs.
"I don't mean what's going on now. I mean what has been going on."
"If you already know, why aren't you already on top of me about it?"
A flash of a grin. "Hawthornes never jump to conclusions." Jameson said simply. "We know you have a reason for it."
"Spit it out, kiddo."
Brandon made a face, like it was a crime to call a seventeen year old teenager "kiddo". But he told them anyway.
"I decided not to be a bystander."
Avery and Jameson kept silent, both not quite understanding.
"You know Vince? The senior I beat up the other day?" There was no regret in his tone. It was clear what he thought about his display of uncharacteristic aggression.
"He's been harassing someone from my class. I punched him after he tried to... touch her without her consent."
Jameson narrowed his eyes. There was a hint of mischievousness in them. He knew there were more pressing matters, but he just couldn't help it. "So there's a girl..."
"Seriously, dad?"
Jameson Winchester Hawthorne only shrugged.
"What about the stuff about the brawling in the bar? You left home in the dead of night without even telling us." Avery brought them back to the matter at hand.
"A challenge. He told me we were going to play pool, and if I won, he would leave her alone forever."
He sighed. "It was a trap. His goons were ready and waiting, and when I was almost winning, they jumped me."
"But we didn't see any injuries on you in the past months, not as bad as a few days ago."
"You didn't, because I managed to escape. And most of the bruises were on my chest anyway. Those idiots don't know a shit about fighting."
There was one last thing Avery needed to know. "Tell me you have a good reason for skipping school too."
"Ahh... that." Brandon slipped off his boxing gloves and ran a hand down his face.
"That bad, huh?"
"No... at least not bad to me. I have only ever skipped school on two occasions, and one of them were not from recent times." As he said that last phrase, he looked at his father, who had carefully positioned himself behind his mother.
"Don't talk about the first occasion," he mouthed.
He gave Jameson a slight nod. The two of them didn't know it, but nothing could escape Avery's sight. She decided not to press them about it, but she would see to it that "Tahiti" would be said later on.
"I... okay, let me see how to word this."
"She was having a bad day after another encounter with that douche in the morning. So... I decided to take her out of school to the skateboarding park. The graffiti was a cover-up."
"A cover-up?" Avery raised an eyebrow.
"The paparazzi caught us, and I knew if they published our photos, she would be in for it from everyone in school. You know, with me being Hawthorne and all. It was a good thing I caught them then because I managed to strike a deal."
"You told them you would give them something to report on if they deleted the photos." Jameson concluded that on his own.
"Yes," Brandon replied.
"How do you know they deleted the photos?"
"Because I destroyed their camera after I caught them. I sent them pictures of myself graffiti-ing the walls."
Avery and Jameson exchanged glances. He had really thought about everything and he seemed willing to face the consequences.
"You must really... care about her." Jameson said, after a while.
"I know you'd do the same for mom, dad. Two can play that game, remember?"
"Always."
Avery took her son's hand. "Brandon... I get that you want to protect her and I'm glad you felt the need to stand up for someone else. But as your mother, I hate that it's at your expense."
"And as your parents," she continued, looking at Jameson, "you could have told us about it. We would have tried to help."
"No, mom. You couldn't have helped. I had to deal with this myself, because you're the Hawthorne heiress, and if you get involved with this, and if you try to defend me, the rest of the world will say things about you."
"I don't want you to have to deal with my fights."
Jameson opened his mouth. Brandon beat him to speaking.
"Not you too, dad. Alisa is pissed off enough with you as it is... not her favourite person, you are."
"I'm not her favourite person too, but she doesn't dislike me that much. I don't want either of you having to face the consequences of my choices."
"Well, we can't just stay put and let them call you a disgrace to the family!" Avery was getting a little bit emotional. She cared so much about Brandon, and now hearing the reason behind his actions lately spurred that protective motherly instinct of hers even more. She couldn't bear seeing them spread lies about her son.
"I only have one thing to say about that."
"Yes?"
"Screw the paparazzi and screw the world. The best thing we can do is do what's right, right?"
Jameson started chuckling just then. Avery looked at him like he was crazy.
"Jameson! This is serious – the paparazzi are accusing your son of being a disgrace to the family name, and you're laughing, for what?"
He held up both hands in surrender. "Whoa, whoa, Heiress, don't be mad."
"I'm only laughing because... I'm proud of him. Yeah, screw the paparazzi. He did what was right, and he's standing by it, and I think that's the most important thing."
He walked over to Avery and placed both hands on either side of her face. "And since when did we play by other's rules and expectations?" He whispered.
Avery thought about it. The paparazzi had been her biggest pain in the ass since the first day she had stepped foot in Hawthorne House. Becoming a heiress didn't change the fact that they would always exist. She didn't have the freedom to act the way she wanted to back then. But Brandon did.
Brandon was her son and he was Hawthorne, but he was still himself. He deserved to have his own life, to be unafraid of living regardless of what other people thought of him. She was proud of him for realising that, for not letting the last name Hawthorne be a cage, but instead using it as an advantage.
She made up her mind.
She placed her hands over Jameson's. "Never." She whispered back.
She let go and turned to face Brandon.
"I'll talk to Alisa about keeping her contact and I'll tell her to pull as many strings as she can to stop them from following you. To stop them from targeting you."
"But you need to promise me something."
"What is it?" He asked.
"Promise me you'll lay low as much as possible. We'll have a chat with the principal about that Vince guy."
Jameson winked. "We'll play nice," he said in a sing-song voice.
Brandon surprised the two of them, dragging them into a group hug.
"Thanks mom, thanks dad. Thanks for believing me and for believing in me. I didn't mean to get you worried."
Avery reached up to pat his head. A glimmer of tears lined her eyes. She was so proud of him and she knew Jameson was too. They intertwined their fingers and he squeezed her hand.
His face seemed to read "I'm proud of us, for raising him the way we did" and she was sure her eyes reflected the same thought.
"Let's go home." The two of them said at once. They burst out laughing.
Jameson in the middle, Avery on his right and Brandon on his left, arms over each other's shoulders, they trudged back up to the House.
There was one more question Jameson had to ask.
"By the way... if we ask Xander to debug your phone, will you debug his?"
"Not a chance."

I'm gonna miss the ogs when the Grandest game comes out, at least we still have games untold and Grayson in the Grandest game. Grayson is honestly my comfort character (leave it up to me to always pick the character who has never had a day of comfort in their lives as my comfort character). But I'm gonna miss the ogs smm. Like after games untold we won't get anymore averyjameson pov. And like I also want to know how Libby and Nash are going and what is happening with Xander and Max. I mean don't get me wrong I love all the new characters too, like Savannah, Gigi, Rohan and Lyra are awesome. I'm just gonna miss the ogs SM.

My unpopular TIG opinions.
Since y'all are expressing opinions out here..who am i to leave out? Now have in mind that these are MY opinions, some of these are unpopular some of these are NOT, some of these are even underrated facts but let's just ignore that..
(Please don't hate me)
1. I DON'T CARE ABOUT EVE, and i don't want her to be with Grayson..bcs APPERANTLY and very unfortunatly there are people out there who ship Gray and Eve..crazy..i know, i really don't care about her, i already made a whole post about why i don't like her at all, she's a manipulator, she's a liar, she's a backstabber. She traumatised poor Gray and threatened Ave. I respect your opinion if you like her and i truly understand where some of you are coming from, but i just can't manage to like her, don't hate her i just dislike her. Even if she gets a redemption arc..i can't seem to understand how i'll like her character after what she has done, but if i will..."forgotten but never forgiven"
2.underrated characters, there are so many of them in this books, for example Zara Hawthorne. I love her honestly, i could never hate, i understand she may have done some wrong things...but i love her nontherless♡♡ and same goes for Alisa Ortega.
(Honorable mention) also come on, give my man Oren some appreciation he deserves, you think following teenager around is easy? Even if it's his job and he gets paid, it's still tiring..😔
3. Uhh..i am scared to say this...i prefer Nash and Alisa to Nash and Libby...WAIT, WAIT, WAIT...DON'T KILL ME YET..LET ME EXPLAIN FIRST🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻, i saw @hawthornesbiggestfan 's post, and that encouriged me to say this, read that post bcs that explains exacly how i feel. I love Nash and Libby, they're super cute, i can't wait for their wedding and think they are going to have a very happy family...but..i'm still at the restaurant😔, EVEN THO we never got to know Nash and Alisa's story, smtg about those two had me invested in them from the beggining, like imagne Alisa growing up and Nash slowly developing a tiny crush on them..young love..passion..childhood lovers...love confession..ughh, also the fact that Gray, Xan and Jamie already saw her as their family, like an older sister. Such a shame we never got to see their story. Again, i'm not saying i dislike Nash and Libby tho if it had been love triangle between Nash, Libby and Aliso...i would choose Nash and Alisa...
3.Avery is freaking underrated, yk what's sad? SHE IS THE MAIN CHARACTER, and she doesn't get enough hype (i've made a post about this too) meanwhile people are swooning over Hawthorne brothers, and yes i am one of them but i love Avery to death, i even saw someone comparing Avery and the brothers saying "oh she's so boring..Hawthorns are way better than her..blah..blah..blah" technically they were saying fuck poor people, i know for a fact NONE of the brother would last an hour from where she came from (iykyk), she's a girlboss, and a main character for a reason.
4. As much as i love Averyjameson, i have to say their story is pretty much over, We'll probably get some cute moments from them in tgg or in games untold, but they ARE NOT a main couple anymore.
5.TGG IS A NEW SERIES, please understand that it's new book series with new characters (at least most of them) stop attacking JLB, it's her books, it's her choice.
6.Lyra Kane's haters don't make sense to me, especially those one who mock, and laugh at her lovers saying "you don't even know her, i'm gonna laugh at y'all when she turns out to be Eve 2.0" uhm...sir..miss..shut it. I respect your opinion if you're a Lyra netural bcs it's true we don't know many things about her and i totally understand if you can't love her yet, but don't hate, we know we're delusional most of the times, but that's what headcanons is for, for fun, alight, let people have fun.
7. Will all due respect i have...Averygrayson shippers are...dumb..yikes..sorry, but it's the truth, i'm tired of talking about this, it's been 4 books, Avery is happy with Jamie, they're perfect for each other, their relationship status is great and Gray is most definetly getting a new love interest..but of you still ship and have faith in them..do so..who am i to stop you? Just don't be disappointed when it won't be ture.
8.i may be judging too early but Savannah and Gigi being in the game..doesn't sit right, tbh honest it'a NEPOTISM at it's finest, i love both of them so much..but..nah. again, idk for sure..it may be some trick, it's JLB after all.
9.there are too many repetitive charcter traits..Jameson and Rohan, Grayson and Savannah, Gigi and Xander, Eve and Emily, every single dad, exept for Isaiah.
10.Speaking of Isaiah, he is extremly underrated, i mean he is the best dad in the series and somehow people talk about Sheffield Grayson more than him.
Sheesh...don't kill me in the comments please, i'm too young to die🙏🏻😔
(I'll probably do a part 2...

Jameson story is my favorite of the entire saga, it has all the puzzles, action and AveryJameson moments.
The thrill of the bell scene? Insane.
I think his moments had the tension I wanted at the end of The Final Gambit, don't get me wrong, I love the chess scene but now compared with Jameson race for the game, it's feels underwhelming. Even Gray's story felt like it finished abruptly, it wasn't bad but it was bit sudden.
ok
