next round of in-progress naruto thoughts under the cut!  i haven’t done one of these in a while - been doing a lot of individual posts instead, but seeing as we just finished a season and started a long filler arc, it feels like a good time to collect my thoughts.

[spoiler policy disclaimer first, as always: I am watching naruto for the first time.  i am trying to avoid spoilers, so please don’t interact with this (tags included, because the notifications now show them to me automatically) with any spoilery commentary, including even general things like “oh i love this show but it gets less good after X point” or “X season is better than Y season” or any general assessments of quality/likability/etc re: future seasons.  Thank you! <3 ]

okay uh where to begin.  UM.  so much is happening that this is not going to be a comprehensive commentary, just certain things that stuck out in my head.

two annoyances first, and then the rest is my usual lovefest:

- if i have to listen to one more speech about how amazing naruto is i’m gonna start fast-forwarding through them.  i’m sorry; i love him so much, but in the last couple of episodes there have been at least 10 separate speeches saying the exact same thing, and i need a little break from the naruto praise-fest.  i already know he’s wonderful!  you do not have make every single character tell me so.  spend that time on resolving the other characters’ arcs on their own terms, the way they deserve - naruto is very important to all of them, but he also isn’t the only reason they're here.

- i love how the show made such a big deal once again out of sakura refusing to let sasuke and naruto go on without her, saying “i’ve finally caught up to them; they’re not going to leave me behind this time” and then they literally just...leave her behind lmao.  the show has tried to resolve her arc in exactly this way multiple times and every time it goes right back to its old nonsense.  i don’t know why i keep believing it when the show says she’s just as integral a part of the team as sasuke and naruto.  i am charlie brown with the football, and i keep landing flat on my back.  

and now better things:

- i loved gaara’s relationship with shukaku coming back into play!  when he swooped in to pull shukaku out of obito like “come here, shukaku” because naruto had no connection with the one-tails...that was awesome.  and also him asking for shukaku’s help like “i’m not ordering you.  i’m asking you.  if you don’t agree, that’s fine” - i LOVED seeing that.

- that whole episode with the three-way deadlock...you ever see a particular shot and think “foreshadowing, foreshadowing, foreshadowing”???

- perpetually distressed over how entertained i am by orochimaru’s dynamic with taka and then needing to remind myself of how EVIL orochimaru is lmao.  like.  i’ve always loved his character; there’s never a dull moment when he’s around, but then in this arc they’re almost like...making you imagine what it would’ve been like if he had been on their side the whole time and you’re kind of...enjoying all these moments he has with the kids but then you have to be like NO!  THESE KIDS ARE HIS EXPERIMENTS!  HE’S THE ONE WHO STOLE BABY YAMATO AND RAISED HIM IN A TEST TUBE!!!  THIS MAN IS EVIL!!!!!!!  and yet...

- i was losing it laughing at sasuke’s snake calling him “lord sasuke.”  i’m sorry, you all know i love sasuke more than anything but this kid’s ego does NOT need further swelling.  my sister and i were both like “yeah ok kakashi’s gonna put a stop to that immediately” lmao - like there are some levels on which sasuke needs love and support but there are also some levels on which he needs an adult to bop him with an empty paper towel roll and tell him NO.

- i love that sai is still the smartest one in the room, telling sakura that they don’t really know sasuke’s true intentions and can’t trust him.  and i really liked the callback to his initial arc way back in season 2, where he looks at sakura and says to himself “your words may not be lies, but i can already tell that your smile is fake.”  

- i know it’s all going to go to shit eventually but in the meantime i love seeing team 7 sniping at each other.....“don’t drag us down, naruto”...... “remember, he can only be affected by sage jutsu!”/���i know that, i’m not YOU”...........just like the Good Old Days XD

- also how much did i laugh when minato was like “you and the others go and deal with madara” and naruto was like “OH RIGHT!  I FORGOT ABOUT HIM!!!”  ‘forgot’ about the antagonist.  in the middle of the war they’re fighting against him.  that’s the naruto we know and love. XD

- LOVED when shikamaru needed ino to connect him to the entire army and he asked “can you do it” and she went “that doesn’t matter; i’m GONNA do it!!!!”  i am crying for both of them forever but i love seeing them continue to be so amazing

- i talked about this on another post, but i have loved having minato around for these episodes.  i finally feel like i’m actually *fond* of him, whereas before, the best i could say was that he was an impressive shinobi and i didn’t DISlike him.  but it is so much fun to see what a massive awkward weirdo he is, with his ridiculous jutsu names and asking naruto “sooooooo......is this your girlfriend?”  the man is a DORK.  he’s a certified dork.

and yet at the same time - in a fight, he still possesses that sort of cold, “our family is shinobi” ruthlessness, which sounds like a bad thing, but isn’t how i mean it.  it’s just a “we do what we must” vibe, and i respect it, especially in this situation, when we really need someone like that on our side.  eg, when he realizes that it’s obito up on top of the ten-tails, he teleports there and cuts his throat INSTANTLY.  and it’s clear in the aftermath that it kills him to do it, but he does do it, without a second’s hesitation, because it has to be done.  

that sort of decisive action is what i would have expected from him, given our past introductions to his character, but i appreciate that this arc is also showing us his human side, and the depth of compassion he feels, and the weight of his guilt, and the fact that he actually cares about what happened to the kids who were his responsibility and whom the shinobi world swallowed whole.

- all of those images of what life could have been like if obito had just come home...........that was EVIL.  why would they make me see that.  the knowledge that he and kakashi could have gone through all of their suffering together, that neither of them would have had to ever be alone, that they could have had in each other what kakashi’s kids are going to have someday...that was too much.  i already think about that daily.  i did not need to see it animated for me onscreen. 

- i appreciate the fact that naruto’s attempt to talk obito over to the other side didn’t work.  i just think on a fundamental level that this isn’t really something naruto should be able to do.  naruto’s presence and what he represents make a difference, obviously, but i just think that reaching obito is kakashi’s job.  which is essentially what minato says when he sends naruto away, so i appreciated that. 

i’m sure there are lots of things i’m missing (so much is happening!) but just some yelling about the end:

- sooooo naruto is almost dead.  or temporarily dead.  my assumption is that gaara is taking him to kurama’s other half inside minato?  but that’s just a guess; i dunno.  (i’d be happy if that’s where they were headed, because it would at least mean that naruto and sakura and kakashi are back in the same place together, so i’d appreciate that.)

- sasuke is also almost dead.  hopefully taka can go pick him up...even though he’s been so terrible to them...he owes them so many apologies

- WHAT HAPPENED TO BEE?????  *distraught face* obviously we all know naruto and sasuke are going to be fine eventually, but bee must’ve been disconnected from eight-o too.........  ;_______;

- i’m just gonna come out and say it.  i think yamato is here.  you all can laugh at me later if i’m wrong, but i think yamato is here trapped inside swirly and i cANNOT handle that

- madara said something very brief about sasuke’s eyes that i’m curious about......are we finally going to get more information about the different sharingan patterns?

- the new ending credits start off as the usual naruto-sasuke show but then kakashi and sakura come bursting in and honestly the emotions i felt......THAT IS WHAT I WANT.  I WANT ALL FOUR OF THEM TO MATTER AND TO BE THERE TOGETHER.

ATEEZ - Answer I’ve already stated why this song made me cry when I reviewed it over the summer. To attempt to put it shortly, I feel a sense of almost relief? It makes me feel proud of the boys in general and the songs feels like overcoming an obstacle and coming out stronger and just feeling overwhelmed by joy and happiness? And the part at the end really makes me just burst into tears it feels uplifting and beautiful.

MCND - Beautiful this song give me this nostalgia feeling, it sounds similar to a pop song I first heard in middle school (Down by Jay Sean). I started listening to pop in middle school and middle school is hell for everyone along with high school but there’s certain memories I have of middle school that weren’t too bad. I had a lot of friends, we filled up an entire table in the cafeteria. It was also in middle school that I sort of confessed to both my crushes. Middle school was different and new to me and ya’know middle school but this song reminds me of those times. Also about the song itself it gives me this feeling of longing and want like longing to fall in love and just it’s very strong and that really gets to me. (Upon looking up the lyrics it’s seems more like a song for the fans rather than a love song but that’s just the feeling it gives me and the way I interpret it)

Secret Number - Got That Boom recently this song has been making me feel things. Just the chorus is so upbeat and it feel like I can relax and just dance my heart out and just be happy and I don’t know if these girls will become an Itzy situation but there’s definitely something about the song that gives me kind of a similar feeling. I feel happy

CIX - Cinema ok so I never thought CIX would have this effect on me and up until recent songs didn’t give me these feelings and make me cry unless the song itself was sad. The way it’s been lately the songs I listen to can really sit with me and make me feel emotional even if the song is happy and upbeat. The way Cinema is, I’ve never used this phrasing before with anything, but the way I cried while just listening to the bridge and chorus in Cinema, that song is truly my safe place. Like my friend said “it feels like a hug” it does. That chorus gives me a feeling of nostalgia but in a way that makes it feel okay and it’s not a feeling that’s upsets me it’s literally a hug, it’s like a warm hug it feels like, like when I listen to it the way the members make their voices sound it’s relaxing and calming. It’s like whenever I hear the song, even if I’m watching a performance of it I feel calm, I feel okay. Like every bone in my body is at ease, every worry is melting away and I’m almost just floating on a cloud. I don’t exactly know how to put these feelings and emotions into words but I cannot praise Cinema enough.

OneWe & OneUs - Last Song this song is very upbeat and makes me feel joy and it doesn’t make me feel safe persay but it’s comforting. It’s another song that gives me a sense of longing. It’s like seeing an old friend again and reconnecting, like the ending credits to a really wholesome and wonderful movie about friendship and love amoung these friends that never stops growing. Just seeing all the clips in the mv of Oneus and Onewe together having fun and enjoying each other’s company, it’s almost like an end of summer recap having all these fun adventures and fun memories that you never want to forget and you will always cherish those memories and you want to keep those friends with you forever. And seeing them perform the song together on stage, the choreo has the same vibe it’s just a really feel good and wholesome song. (Also thinking about it now there also seems to be this sadness, like, ok in short sometimes I get really upset when I think about how I’m not little anymore. More on that later but this song feels like you’re just trying to be in the moment and preserve your youth, you don’t want to grow up, you don’t want things to change you want your friends to be with you always and you just want to live in this memory that you’ve captured foever and never grow up. That emotion is really strong here as well.)

Loona - Star a lot of people said this song gave them nostalgic feels and it’s crazy how that happened, it did for me too, as soon as I heard the chorus it hit me like a truck. I really don’t have the words to describe this song really other than that weird nostalgic feeling but it was weird how a lot of us had that feeling. The mv is beautiful and it’s crazy how I had memorized the chorus in the Korean version within a few days of watching them perform it. I really don’t know what to say about this song other than how amazing it is really. It kinda takes you back to a certain time in your life but I don’t know what that time it. Someone had said that they were listening to it while their mum was a asleep and the mum dreamed she was back in her hometown and she could hear that song play in the streets, it almost seems as if that song has time traveling powers or some power truly beyond humans lmao. She’s really something

Dreamcatcher - Odd Eye this song is hella but the bridge and the hard rock in the chorus sent me into fight or flight for the first time. I got another nostalgia feeling but with an image which never happens to me but basically picture it raining hard and you have extreme feelings of sadness and dread and you just want to almost scream?

Ghost9 - Thinking of Dawn another fight or flight song, it’s really weird tho but specifically Prince’s line in the bridge or chorus gave me a panic attack the first time I heard it, there’s something about the way the song and his voice sounds that like upsets me? And makes me want to cry. (Almost like this impending doom feeling. Similar vibes actually to that cursed Artificial Intelligence movie that I fucking loathe so goddamn much)

Twice - Cry for Me gurl this song gives me nostalgia like an early 2000’s but maybe late 90’s pop song and wow, it’s just so damn good I had to put it here

Sunmi - Pporoppipiiram - this song is another one that kinda plays with my emotions, I’ve described it as running away in the night with a secret lover, I’ve talked about wanting to just have these crazy night time shenanigans with a lover or friend and feeling free, it’s a song that I can see a sunrise in my head, the opening sounds and smells like a sunrise during the summer, possibly on the beach seeing the sun’s rays lighting up the ocean, the soft pink and orange glow, what Sunmi perfectly portrays in that mv is exactly what goes on in my mind whenever I listen to that song and she’s a certified bop™️ and that song is just so lovely but she’s got some feeling to it

2Z - Not Without You - motherfuckin 2Z came out with this song after Hyungwoong left and I was still upset about him leaving but I still wanted to support 2Z cause I wasn’t about to give up on them like that and the way this song was carried was gorgeous. I clearly cried, the way the song and the members voices make you feel comforted and kind of at peace with the world. It’s an uplifting song and the member’s sound wonderfully and Zunon’s voice was actually what brought me to tears, his singing is so gentle and truly beautiful and he fits right in with 2Z and when I realized that and I realized that 2Z can do all these things with their voices I just couldn’t help but cry. This song is like a huge sigh of relief but also tears of happiness

2Z - Stand nothing really specific about this song just the mv made me fucking cry at like 5 in the am. There was a big sad feeling tho

Yooa - Bon Voyage I never expected Yooa to get a solo but I was so blown away for her solo. It’s not a song that is a bop or really upbeat but it’s a gorgeous piece and with the way it sounds and the set and her outfits. It’s really the whole fantasy theme. It takes you away to a make believe world where you are free and you can just get away and escape. I don’t really know how to describe it but the scene where she’s on like rocks and she’s just spinning and it’s got that cool sound to the song, that scene describes the feeling perfectly

Pentagon - Daisy this fucking song. First off fuck you Pentagon for making me feel emotions yet making Yuto and Hongseok go tits up. Just seeing them all on the floor looking defeated or at a loss, it’s a painful feeling. It’s a song that makes me feel bad and towards the end I felt this feeling of fight or flight like, I wanted to stop watching it because I felt this inner panic for some reason like I had to get away. And then when they all sing together that really did me in, made me tear up and it’s a beautiful song but not in a beautiful way it’s painfully beautiful and the boys did so well in portraying all the feeling through their voices and just the different scenes in the mv

BlackPink - Lovesick Girls this song I call my self proclaimed anthem, I heard it for the first some time and it wasn’t until I watched them perform it for the first time that I teared up. At the time this happened I was really sad and I kept “slipping” so I felt very touch starved and clingy and I wanted just love and affection from anyone. I was feeling really lonely and the feeling was stronger than it’s ever been it I felt like crying all the time I was just so upset that I was lonely and I really wanted love and affection and this song was like my therapy for that I guess? I didn’t feel so alone. There’s a strong emotional bond I have with this, the desire and the need to fall in love and to just have attention from that one special person. I know the song is kind of about just feeling like you’re not cut out for falling in love and you know every relationship ends but there’s still that need, that desire to fall in love and be in love with another person, and with me I always say I don’t want to be in a relationship, I hate men, love is disgusting, but there’s thing strong desire and need inside me to be loved and to fall in love and sometimes, like when this song came out, you just get so upset that it feels like your heart is like in pain, like you hurt on the inside. That whole “hurts your heart” shit

Itzy - Wannabe I’m actually not going to explain why this song makes me cry I’m not ready to give the whole story yet and I probably won’t be. So in short, I heard this song when I was at quite a low point in my life I suppose, problems at work were just causing me to truly feel like shit and this song really hit me and actually the Wannabe era is what made me stan Itzy those girls are so precious to me and I hold them so close to my heart they are little miracles honestly and that song just really sits with me

I highly recommend all these songs they are so good and they have such beautiful and great mvs to go with them, some even cinematic masterpieces also this finna be my playlist for my funeral honestly. She doubles as the ‘play this at my funeral’ playlist

Dani Reviews Wonder

hello, I'm well aware no one asked for this but this is the only way I can order my thoughts on an album and when Romance came out, someone literally asked me to fully review it and I've never forgotten about that and I loved writing a full review so hello here I am

I hate that I have to do this but DISCLAIMER: these are my opinions. I get that you may not agree with them and that’s totally cool, but if you come into my inbox attacking my opinions on a song, I will not answer it and it will be deleted without a second thought. Let’s discuss the songs, not tear each other apart 

and LET’S GO

1. INTRO

Ok so I typically do nothing with intros because I usually think they’re a waste of time. HOWEVER, I really like this one. Now that we’ve heard the whole album, it really encapsulates the entire feel of the rest of the album. It’s been on my playlist since it’s been released and I'm obsessed with it. The soft little piano in the beginning is just perfect and I really love the build up. (not many lyrics to chose from here ope)

2. WONDER

I never did a full analysis like I was going to for this song. However, I’m going to do like half of one here. I honestly feel like he can be talking about himself, his fans or a girl. You can see it in all 3 ways. I also just feel like there are some lyrics in this where I'm like YES. It reminds me a little bit of Mirrorball by Taylor Swift in the fact that we expect so much from celebrities and like.....why??? It’s just kind of fucked. I think this is honestly such a good single and I really really love it. I feel like it’s just really pure?? if that makes sense. Like he’s just being like “I wonder why it is like this.” and the BRIDGE ugh she's so beautiful.

I wonder why I’m so afraid of saying something wrong. I never said I was a saint.

3. HIGHER

A CERTIFIED BOP. It’s just so lively and upbeat and I wanna dance and I CANNOT WAIT to hear this live. It’s going to be absolutely insane. Blasted it on my way to get coffee this morning. And the lyrics are so lovey and cute but the beat is just too fkn good. I feel like it’s a very common theme in this album to be like “with you, nothing else matters” and like...can’t relate but ALAS I love the music about it anyway.

4. 24 HOURS

OH BOY time to FKN CRY. I absolutely love how old timey it feels. Especially the beginning, it makes me think of 50s music and I’ve been on a big 50s kick recently. Again he’s just so loud about being I don’t care what anyone thinks because I love you and I know it’s you and like YES PLEASE. and just being so in love that you’d throw it all away to come home to that person every day. I really love how the lyrics start with him being like I don’t know how to do this at all but I love you so lets go from there and then figure out the rest. And quoting “only fools rush in” made me so emotional. I love how simple the music is behind it because I think it really encapsulates the feeling of the song. It’s so hard to pick a favorite lyrics for this song my god.

5. TEACH ME HOW TO LOVE

UMMMM OK???? Very Justin Timberlake vibes for me personally. Very 70s. Very vibey. “Draw a map for me laced with strawberries” ???? HOMIES I cannot I genuinely cannot. As sexual as this is, I also think it’s just so PURE. Like just teach me what’s best for you and I’ll do it. Also like...Shawn say “fuck” challenge like homie you could’ve just said it. Please. I also feel like if I was in love with someone, it’d hit different but for me it is just so FUN and I love the guitar parts a TOn. Like Idk how you can’t just get up and dance to this. Also this one live is going to be other worldly. And “babe I won’t stop til you feel the rush” I MEANNNN

6. CALL MY FRIENDS

Ok, so idk what to really say about this one. I like the concept. I think the concept itself is really sweet and fuck it hits different when you’re away from all your friends especially during quarantine and college in general. Like I was (still am) on the phone with my friends constantly, because like Shawn said, they know me better than any one else ever will because they watched me go and grow through it. It’s also just sad because we grow up and grow apart and fuck it’s HARD. I’m not a huge fan of the chorus and I think that’s the main thing for me. The verses are sweet, but idk really about the chorus. I’m just indifferent about the chorus. But there are just lyrics in here that really hit me like “I miss how it was when we we wished we were older.” that one really gets me.

7. DREAM

Ok I LOVE THIS SONG but I have to first get something off my chest. The first time I listened to it, I could only think of the dream song from shark boy and lava girl. I don’t know why. But I’m done with that now. Moving on. This song is just so sweet and lovey and I’m obsessed with it. I really like the rhythm of it?? I think that’s the word I’m looking for idk. ALSO him talking about their little touch bracelets like wtf why is no one in love with me. I honestly don’t have much to say about this except that I’m thoroughly obsessed with it. I kinda feel like this song could be in a movie?? you feel me??? The echoey “dream”s are also just GORGEOUS, also how it gets so soft at the end fuck I love this song. And if I think too much about it I’ll cry, but the parallels between Dream and Dream of You

8. SONG FOR NO ONE

This song makes me sad. Very sad. God, just the feeling of having a notification and wanting it to be that one person and it just never is but every time you’re like ok but what if. I was thinking about this last night and the way I see it is that he’s made it clear all of his songs are for/about Camila. So I feel like this one is very guard up, being like “no no this isn’t about you, I swear I’m not writing songs about you. it’s about no one. it’s just something I made up” which just makes it all so much harder. Also the use of “someone” instead of “her” or “you” is also very like “I’m not going to say it.” It’s just all very sad because you have to imagine everyone asking him all the time who his songs are about and he just had to keep saying “no one.” This is the first time where he’s actually been able to say “HEY THEY’RE ABOUT MY GIRLFRIEND.” And like fuck, finally. Also imagining Shawn drunk calling her and her having to say she doesn’t feel the same. AND when he's like it’s fine I’ll be fine anyway as his voice kind of trails off like GOD that feeling HURTS. I just have way too much to say about this song because I think you can go really deep into it on what the years before Camila and him started dating were really like for him.

9. MONSTER

I won’t say too much about this bc this song has been out for a little bit, so I’ll make this a little more personal. my friend Han is a HUGE Justin fan and I am pretty obviously a HUGE Shawn fan. and we’d always be like “omg what if” but we thought it was never going to happen so when rumors started circulating about this, we were fucking freaking out. This song is literally our dream collab. I think Justin was the perfect person for this song because of his time in the public eye. And just the whole song being like “you put me up here, so I guess you’re the only one who can push me off.” And it is pretty fucked how we put celebrities on these pedestals and expect them to not make any mistakes at all when we are constantly making them. It’s just hypocritical. It’s also hard to pick a favorite lyric for this one because I think there are a lot that hit hard so I’m doing a fave Shawn and fave Justin

This one surprised me in the best way. I have no idea what I was expecting for this song but god I LOVE IT. I’m obsessed with it and want to jam forever. Just very boppy??? and so HAPPY. I get so smiley when I listen to it. “Waiting for the moment that you’ll let me down” just stuck out to me because I feel like that’s such a universal feeling. Like when everything’s going so good and you’re like....ok what’s about to go wrong. I’m literally dancing in my seat to this baby. The chorus is so catchy and I really wish I was in love pt 358933. I think this may be crowned as my favorite on the album. It’s just so fun and full of love.

11. ALWAYS BEEN YOU

I have been looking forward to this one and she did not disappoint!! Again, this man is screaming about how in love he is and yes, sir I’m listening. You’re the only one my heart keeps coming back to!!!!! And just the very loud instrumental with the soft “always been you”s is SO GOOD. The boy who’s really underneath all the scars and insecurities!!! God, I just feel like this one is especially raw about love. And for the thousandth time, really wish I was in love to fully feel this but STILL it has such a good beat but is still so so soft.

12. PIECE OF YOU

Heavily reminds me of Jealous by Nick Jonas and I am HERE FOR IT. I feel like we haven’t gotten a ton of this blatant jealousy from him and the HONESTY of this is very like yes I'm possessive. I’m so into you it hurts!!! The counting is also.....hot. Idk why but I love a song that’s very like “yes I'm protective and pathetic and reckless and what about it???” Again, love the beat. A little 80s in my opinion (here’s me remembering it’s MJ inspired lmao).

13. LOOK UP AT THE STARS

*deep breath bc I love this song so much* ok so I read the lil things Spotify had underneath before each song and I cried immediately when I just READ that it was for the fans and then listening to it in that light just killed me. ALSO if you saw his insta live last night he was literally like “look up at the stars!! remember that one!!” and now I'm like OK THANKS. Anyways, It is so soft and fuck it’s so meaningful. This is one of my favorites for sure. It’s literally like he’s sending you away from the concert and this would be such a good closing song (I know it won’t be but I can dream). I’m crying again but “I'm not going to let you down”??? PLEASE I JUST. Calling us angels!! I’LL NEVER BE ALONE Y’ALL I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS TOO MUCH. he wrote this on his own and yes I'm emotional about it. I don’t think he’s released a song he’s written on his own since handwritten revisited??? (correct me if I'm wrong) but even that alone is enough for me to know he’s getting way more confident in his music. I think it’s a really good closing because it’s so soft and acoustic and very true to him as he started. The raspiness and realness of it even with the lil thing he says at the end. AGAIN, why tf have I not felt a love like this yet??? Of course, I’m just going to not think of it romantically but just having those people where you can’t even begin to even think about what your life would be like without them. Like I think the lack of descriptors is actually really powerful because like...he can’t imagine it, he can’t explain it so let me just tell you that I genuinely don’t know what would happen if you weren’t here. It closes out the album perfectly (not many lyrics to pick from here lmao)

Final Judgement: Waitress is a great musical and has the ability to attract not only theater fans, but also people who aren’t as interested in musicals because of it’s fun songs. It doesn’t make me feel overwhelmingly sad or happy, which is how you want to do it. 10/10 would recommend

Fine Line - 1 Month in

I’m Back...? You probably didn’t really notice I was gone because I’ve been absentmindedly scrolling and reblogging but I stopped making my own posts for a few weeks while the country burned and I attempted to move house despite all the stress. But it’s been a whole month since Fine Line came out, which is kind of mind blowing because it feels like it’s been a part of my life forever and I thought I’d share my thoughts on it so far. 

Golden - A certified summer bop. Harry said he listened to it driving along the coast looking at the water, so I did just that (given, it was a different coast and a different body of water, but same feeling, I assume). Some of the lyrics really hit home with this one, “I know that you’re scared because hearts get broken” especially. But overall I love this song.

Watermelon Sugar- Another certified summer bop, this is a song that makes me want to dance, a happy song to listen to to brighten my day.

Adore You- Finally, a song that accurately describes how I feel about my Dog. It’s also a song that makes me want to be in love. Although it makes Harry out to be a bit of a liar, since he said “I’d walk through fire for you” and to the best of my knowledge, he has not yet donated to any Australian fire charities yet (although it’s very possible he just didn’t make it public thatbhe did)

Lights up - This song reminds me of one of my Best Friends who came out a few weeks before it was released, it’s a happy song, a song of self discovery a song that reminds me to be who I want to be

Cherry- This is my favourite on the album, reminds me of spring and Cherry Blossoms (maybe that’s where the name comes from) the melody is beautiful, it’s stuck in my head all the time, and it’s weirdly relatable for someone that’s never been in a relationship. And controversially, I quite like the addition of Camille’s voice at the end, it’s a nice addition

Falling- Harry’s voice is beautiful! We knew that already but this song really shows it off. And tugs at the heart strings, I want to wrap my arms around him and tell him that he’s someone that a lot of people want around. I cried the first time I listened and I never cry to music or movies

To Be So Lonely - this is the opposite of what I thought it would be, it’s a sad song you can dance to. The arrogant son of a bitch line almost sounds like he’s mocking someone and I love a petty bitch. I play this in the car on the way to work every morning to get me in the mood for the day

She- The first time I heard this song it reminded me of Hotel California, it’s another certified summer bop. Mitch slays that guitar solo and it’s the kind of attention he deserves

Sunflower Vol. 6 - Ummmmm this song is genius, it has me dancing in the kitchen on a daily basis, I love everything about it, the melody, the lyrics, everything. Wow.

Canyon Moon - I didn’t love this one at first, I skipped it a few times during my first listenings of the album, but now I love the sense of nostalgia that it brings, I long to be under the canyon moon (preferably with Harry)

Treat People with Kindness- This is so very different to anything that I expected out of Harry. I can sing this with my preschoolers and I do, (they tell me it’s weird but we ignore that because they’re 4/5 and they don’t appreciate Harry yet). This is the song I didn’t know I needed but I love it

Fine Line- Wow. This song is beautiful, the lyrics are stunning, and a beautiful way to the end the album. Makes me feel a lot of feelings, I like songs like that.

1. I Forgot That You Existed: A certified bop. My mum loves this one too. Really sets the tone for the album and the production absolutely SLAPS. Pls have this on set list. Best lyric: "In my feelings more than Drake, so yeah." 8/10

2. Cruel Summer: Everyone loves this song including me. Was my initial favourite. Chorus and bridge are probably two of the best moments on the album it's so good and catchy. Best lyric: "I love you, ain't that the worst thing you've ever heard?" 10/10

3. Lover: My favourite single by a mile!! This song warms my heart and is literally top 3 I stan it so hard. Will probably be my wedding song. Fave lyric: All of it, it's PEAK softness 13/10

4. The Man: I like it and the message is good but it's not my favourite? Idk it's amazing but I stan the rest of the album too hard oops. Fave lyric: "I'd be a bitch not a baller." 7/10

5. The Archer: One of my favourite track 5 songs, it's soft and lovely and relatable. Makes me want to give Taylor a hug and never let go bc this is a sad bop :(. Fave lyric: "I never grew up, it's getting so old." 8/10

6. I Think He Knows: UNDERRATED GENIUS. This song has me grinning every time I listen to it it's such a happy and jumpy song. Also the chorus!!!!!!! Honestly this is so cute. Fave lyric: "We could follow the sparks, I'll drive." 9/10.

7. Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince: Wasn't one of my faves on first listen but now I adore it. I listened to it like 4 times in 20 minutes in Asda, it goes off so hard. The aesthetic, the vibes, the LYRICS omg. I love this song. Fave lyric: the whole chorus. 10/10

8. Paper Rings: Wow we love a Stay x 3 mood. It makes me smile so much Jesus I love love so much. It's girly but still mature and it makes me crave a relationship ladies and gays. Fave lyric: "I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this." Also the whole chorus we in CHORUS CITY. 10/10.

9. Cornelia Street: I love it. It's a sad bop definitely but still dancey? Idk. Wild. This song is stanned by a lot of people for good reason. I especially luv the bridge. Fave lyric: "We bless the rains on Cornelia Street." 7/10.

10. Death By A Thousand Cuts: Also wasn't one of my faves on first listen but now it's top 3 on Lover oop. I LOVE THIS SONG. Its a sad dance bop with beautiful lyrics and the tone,,,,, sis let me tell you it's so perfect. Go stream DBATC rn and never stop. Fave lyric: "If the story's over why am I still writing pages?" 13/10.

11. London Boy: MY FAVOURITE ON THE ALBUM. Lmao if you follow me on twitter y'all will know but I never shut up about this song. It's so much fun and is so soft also Taylor saying Shoreditch owns my ass for now and forever. Production: slaps. Lyrics: slap. Vocals: slap. Fave lyric: how do you choose this is all GOLD. 13/10

12. Soon You'll Get Better: This is such a sad song that I actually can't listen to it in public bc I cry. I've been through something similar and boi this had me sobbing at 6am on first listen. Dixie Chicks feature has my heart. God bless Andrea Swift. Fave lyric: "I'll paint the kitchen neon, I'll brighten up the sky." 10/10.

13. False God: WOW I love this song. I love a good horn section and this is IT chief. This is sexy and soft and I just love it honestly it's so underated even though it's god ;) tier. Fave lyric: "And I can't talk to you when you're like this/staring out the window like I'm not your favourite town." 10/10

14. You Need To Calm Down: As a gay swiftie I have to stan. Goes off hard, supports human rights and is a big fuck you to the WBC and Tr*mp. Video is banging too. Fave lyric: "Shade never made anybody less gay." 9/10.

15. Afterglow: Soft soft soft. So relatable and self aware and I love that for us. Also underrated for some reason?? Smh stan taste please. Production is dreamy and the lyrics hit hard. She really out here. Fave lyric: "Fighting with a true love is boxing with no gloves." 9/10.

16. ME!: A lot of people hate this song??? Excuse me sir it's a BOP I love it. So happy, so fun and Brendon Urie was my comphet crush from when I was like 12 onwards lmao I only have one request which is BRING BACK SPELLING IS FUN. Fave lyric: "Livin' in winter, I am your summer." 8/10.

17. It's Nice To Have A Friend: I like it, probably one of my least favourites here though? I gotta be in the mood for it ig. Love the message and vibe though honestly go off Taylor ily. Fave lyric: "Something gave you the nerve to touch my hand." 7/10.

18: Daylight: Uhhhh did somebody say callback? I've stanned since Red and saw the tour so this made me very happy. Also can we stan Joe because she's so soft for him it's adorable. Fave lyric: again pretty much all of it. 10/10.

NCT 127 “Chain” Reaction/ Review

Alright, so it is very rare for me to come out of the comfort of my tags to share my full thoughts on something, especially a single MV, but here I am because I have so many things to say about Chain that I genuinely could not stop myself from making this post. 

As soon as the song started, I was annoyed by the instrumental with all of the metallic clanking which felt extremely overwhelming as well as the little electronic whirring underneath. Then there was the snare with a strange distortion over it that I just really don’t like even now. It sounds like my head phones have a loose wire or something. I had seen a few people already saying they didn’t particularly like the song and, within the first 15 seconds, I was already under the impression that I would agree with them. Simultaneously though, the visuals were wrecking me. They looked incredible, that shot of their silhouettes in front of the blue and yellow sky is magnificent, and I was so excited for them to return to a darker concept (not that I disliked Touch, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but this concept is just my preference). In other words, I was prepared to just ignore the instrumental to the best of my ability and enjoy the vocals and visuals instead.

Then halfway through Mark’s verse, the distortion comes off the snare. We also had a bass beat added to the track in the first chorus and the annoying metallic sounds were pushed further back in the mix, so things started to come together for me musically. The visuals throughout this whole section of me focusing more on the musical changes were of course wonderful as well, but nothing particularly stood out to me (other than the boys’ beautiful faces, they’re always ethereal). I’ll also note that I didn’t really like the adlibs at first, but the more I listen to this song, the more I find myself enjoying all of them and especially Mark’s ridiculously high-pitched and adorable “brrrr-ah”.

Now we get into the pre-chorus and the point where my heart opened to this song/MV forever. I swear to you I listened to this pre-chorus about 15 times before moving on to the rest of the MV because I was so worried it was only going to go back downhill and I needed to fully enjoy it while I still could. We got two (2) full seconds of Johnny’s glorious vocals and I nearly pissed myself. They were sandwiched between a lovely line from Jaehyun and a lung-collapsing one from Yuta, but my heart stayed in the middle with Johnny. It’s still there to this moment actually. I love how even the choreography here allows for “Oh the center is facing backwards, I wonder who it could be... NO F’ING WAY ITS JOHHNY! JOHNNY’S MOUTH IS MOVING AND WORDS ARE COMING OUT AND I CAN HEAR THOSE WORDS ABOVE EVERYONE ELSE AND IT’S ON PURPOSE!” I shouldn’t be this excited over two seconds of lines, I really shouldn’t have to be, but this is what SM has done to us. Johnny says to “make a wish”? I wish for a Johnny, Yuta, WinWin, and Kun subunit. This was also the shot where I noticed Doyoung’s incredible white jumpsuit and I never want him to take it off. 

Next the chorus starts bumping and we get a really nice visual transition following Taeyong’s hand motion from the party truck shot to this open set with the members in all black and honestly? I wouldn't have even been upset if the entire MV was shot on this scene as a performance MV because they all look so fantastic and the blue lighting looks really pleasant. I’m just a big fan of this shot and specifically the move they do in the choreography on the word “reaction.” But is it just me, or immediately after that are they miming taking a shot? Boys, Haechan is still a baby! I can’t watch him pretending to take a nonexistent shot of alcohol! He’s too small! (I’m going to insert a gif that I made because I can’t find one made by anyone who actually knows what they’re doing, but I have to share this moment with you all so I’m sorry for the quality. It is very bad.)

But let’s forget about all of that because there’s a Johnny.. holding a chainsaw... I had to pause the video there for a bit and contemplate everything I’ve ever known about large men holding chainsaws near me without a tree that needs to be cut down. I mean look at this! I should be afraid right?? That would be the logical response.. and yet here we are. They follow it up with some more choreography that’ll make you choke on your noodles and my heart is about to fly out of my chest.

Then the vocal trinity comes in. Well specifically, Jaehyun comes in and he’s making all these faces that my soft Jeffrey would never even know how to make and his voice sounds so smooth. I swear I'm not saying this to meme, but it just sounds like warm milk. I can’t describe his tone any better than that. It’s so welcoming especially when it immediately follows the gravelly texture of Taeyong’s voice.

And then Doyoung slides in to build off of Jaehyun and I’m convinced that they can’t make my heart beat any faster, but Taeil follows and I was actually right about that sentiment because rather than speeding up, my heart just stops. Next, give it a few Mark lines and a couple more seconds and OUT OF NOWHERE, TAEYONG JUST DECIDES TO GO TF OFF?? WHERE DID THAT EVEN COME FROM??? Now I already made it pretty clear earlier that I am one to be disappointed by really unfair line distribution.. but um, can the song just be like 6 minutes long and maybe a third of it be Taeyong throwing down some bars? Because that brought me right back to life after vocal trinity killed me. It was just so invigorating and this has happened a couple of times now where he will just really have a moment in a song and then it gets cut so much shorter than I want it to be. Personally, if I were doing arrangements for them (LMFAO AT THAT IDEA) one change I’d make would be to take Taeyong off the chorus and spread those lines a bit more and then give him Mark’s time at the end of this verse to really give him a chance to resolve the motion he creates with the speed rapping because the transition back to Mark feels rushed and anticlimactic. Also, Doyoung’s little “yeah” at the end is adorable and if he takes one step closer to me with those bolt cutters against his neck I’m going to have an aneurysm. The same goes for Yuta in those goggles leaning against that thing with his earring dangling down on his shoulder and sparks flying in front of his face. Just stay back, please.

Okay, but more than anything else, I think the bridge really sells this song for me. The vocalists just sound so good. It’s also my favorite part of the instrumental when we ditch all of the extra noise and strip it down to a whirring synth that I actually really enjoy the texture of combined with the powerful vocals and building percussion. I love the layering in Haechan’s voice here because it creates such an interesting effect following the clarity of Jaehyun’s entrance and preceding the power of Taeil’s vocals. I would also like to just mention how much I really like WinWin and Taeil’s hair here. The braids on WinWin really highlight his bone structure and the shaved pattern in Taeil’s undercut is so effective for the mandatory side-profile, power vocals shot. It’s almost enough to distract me from the glorious opportunity to appreciate his jawline and neck-- almost.

After that heavenly note we see the rare center Johnny and Haechan and I have been thoroughly blessed. Honestly, Pinkchan at 3:15 is so precious and I’ve giggled and smiled at that like second and a half for probably 10 minutes now because even though he stays center, that moment is just so playful and everything else is hard and I just love a soft Haechan okay? He’s my baby, sue me. 

In conclusion, Chain is a certified bop (other than the first like 30ish seconds that I still can’t get behind) and NCT 127 continues to ruin my life with magnificent vocals, stunning men, fantastic choreography, and power tools.

THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY OF MARY J. BLIGE

If someone would’ve asked me earlier this year if I was a Mary J. Blige fan, I would’ve said yes. No doubt. I’ll be 23 years old this fall, so although I wasn’t exactly allowed to jam secular music, I snuck around and I liked what I heard. Therefore, it’s safe to say that I grew up to her sounds. From peeping performances of “Real Love” on video channels, to having vivid memories of Mary expressing the depth of human emotion in a closet, to hearing “Be Without You” EVERYWHERE in middle school, I definitely have had my fair share of Blige and I’ve enjoyed it in full. Or so I thought. 

Truthfully, I didn’t understand much about Mary or the messages she’s shared until a few months ago. I knew that she’d been in a tumultuous relationship with K-Ci Hailey of Jodeci in the early 1990s and I also knew that love, specifically the dark side of it, was a central theme in her work. But, it wasn’t real to me yet. Sure, I liked the sound (Mary hits those notes and the beats are bops), I enjoyed the various looks she’s given over the years, and I was into her narrative on a surface level, but it took me going through my own personal hell and being reborn and researching her life to truly feel the agony and the ecstasy of Mary J. Blige.

Blige was born in the Bronx, New York in early 1971 to a musically gifted mother, Cora, and a physically abusive father. Music was always important to the family though - Blige’s Vietnam-vet father, Thomas, was a funk musician. Thomas left the family when Mary was 4, but she has shared that he would pop back into the picture periodically. My findings revealed that the Blige women moved to Savannah, Georgia for a time, but I am unsure of the exact time period. Cora and her two young daughters then relocated to Yonkers, but unfortunately, they were constantly faced with the mistreatment of others, as well as various other forms of violence. Blige has described how while living in the projects, she would hear women yelling and running from their partners and her family would be chased by people wielding weapons. Mary also began being sexually abused by a caretaker at age 5.

As most artists and dreamers do, Mary soon found a beautiful escape from the horrors of her reality. She began singing in a Pentecostal church (a denomination known for it’s high energy services and heavenly music) and was inspired by the soulful voices of Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, and Milira. Although the music remained in her heart, Blige stopped frequenting church, dropped out of school, and began drinking and using drugs. She was a talented hairdresser, so she also spent her time doing her friends’s hair in her mother’s home. Blige soon caught wind of an opportunity to do karaoke at a nearby mall and went in to drop her rendition of Anita Baker’s smash hit, “Caught Up In The Rapture”. The performance was recorded and eventually found it’s way in the hands of Andre Harrell, the CEO of Uptown Records. Just like that, music had once again saved Mary J’s life.

Now affiliated with Uptown Records, Mary was given the opportunity to sing background vocals for popular acts until she began focusing solely on her debut body of work. In 1991, she was assigned to rising producer Sean “Puffy” Combs and they began crafting a sound that would define Blige and change R&B forever. ‘What’s the 411?’, a reference to Blige’s time as a 4-1-1 operator, combined her smooth, strong mezzo-soprano vocals with hip-hop inspired, new jack swing beats and experimented with the look and sound of what a female R&B vocalist was supposed to be like.

Produced primarily by Combs, ‘What’s the 411?’ was released in the summer of 1992 to great reviews from Entertainment Weekly, All Music, and The Rolling Stone Album Guide. Critics praised the blending of genres, Blige’s voice, and her fly, no bullshit attitude, and the project was certified 3x platinum after selling 3 million copies. Singles included: “You Remind Me”, “Real Love”, “Reminisce”, “Sweet Thing” (a cover of Blige’s childhood inspiration, Chaka Khan’s, 1975 cut) and “Love No Limit”. The stunning debut hit the top of Billboard’s Hip Hop/R&B chart, rose to #6 on the Top 200 list, and certainly solidified Blige as a starlet to watch. A remix version of the project was released, but was not as successful, even though the “Reminisce” remix with C.L. Smooth is my jam.

Around this time, Mary also began a romance with Cedric “KCi” Hailey, a singer who also has roots in the Pentecostal church and was signed to Uptown Records in 1991 (as a member of Jodeci). He was featured on Mary’s debut, sharing vocals on the emotional ballad, “I Don’t Want To Do Anything” and stories of the duo’s fiery affair has allegedly been content for a few of Blige’s recordings. Mary remained relatively quiet about the situation in interviews, but she has discussed the final straw. Apparently, Hailey gave her a ring, and then denied their engagement on a television show in London. Blige was shown the footage of his denial on air and reveals how hurt she was by his behavior. (FOUL!!!!) She kept the creativity alive through it all though and began recording her sophomore effort, ‘My Life’ in the winter of 1993.

‘My Life’, with it’s raw feeling, use of old school soul samples, and serious subject matter, was a “call for help” according to Blige.  Shockingly, she didn’t think people would be receptive of it initially. But as fate would have it, the LP, released in late 1994, was not only understood, but well received. Scarred by the events of life, the R&B diva had turned to drugs and drinking again, but was inspired by the support of her fans to begin healing. As someone who has dealt with drugs, experienced sexual abuse, and chosen cruel partners out of self-hate, I comprehend the rockiness of the healing process. It takes time, and sometimes, it’s an ongoing process. You do good, you fuck up, you clean up, you do good, you fuck up...it goes on and on until you become who you want to be. I say this because Blige did not sober up immediately - it took her years to find her strength and love herself the way she needed to be loved. Even after winning her first Grammy for “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need”, Blige continued to stumble. But she never gave up.

Project after project, including 97′s ‘Share My World’, 99′s ‘Mary’, and 2001′s super successful release, ‘No More Drama’, chronicled this process and gave listeners a look into the soul of a superstar. No hateration in this dancery, bitch. Blige’s life began to get better when she started a romance in 2000, with her now soon-to-be-ex, Kendu Isaacs. In the beginning, the couple seemed to be a match made in heaven and Mary has spoken on how she strongly she felt for her first husband. After 16 years though, Blige filed for divorce, stating irreconcilable differences. I now know that cheating is at the heart of the split and I can’t help but wonder what the hell Isaacs is thinking. Spousal support? What? How do you dog MARY JANE BLIGE and then get to HER bag? Mind blowing. 

On the more positive side, during their union, Blige gave up drugs and alcohol for good, modified her diet, and gave the world ‘Love & Life’, ‘The Breakthrough’, ‘Growing Pains’, ‘Stronger With Each Tear’, ‘My Life II’, ‘A Mary Christmas, and ‘The London Sessions’. She also co-headlined a tour with Jay-Z in 2008 to support their respective 2007 releases. It remains the best selling male/female hip-hop/r&b tour of all time, grossing over 30 million dollars. Blige also won 8 of her 9 Grammy awards during this time period.

In 2017, the media has focused heavily on her divorce from Isaacs (I scrolled through pages trying to find older news that spoke on the good points of their relationship), but that’s how it be. I got a few cosmic clues that Mary J Blige’s story was worth looking into and sharing, the first coming from my mom. When all of the news started to break about Mary’s split, my mom told me to (in so many words) to humanize Blige. “She’s our sister”, my mom said. Facts, Pastor Lewis. She is our sister, and we gotta love her and lift her up. My friend Don, who is kiiiiinda responsible for my most recent MJB spin, also helped me realize a few things about Blige. He showed me “U + Me”, a single from her latest offering, ‘Strength of a Woman’ and a light bulb went off. The stories of violence, the broken relationship with self, the deep desire for real love...I finally understood it and could enjoy it as someone with a past and bright future. I can say that I’m now a true fan because I know that we are reflections of one another. Our agony and ecstasy has become one.

Congratulations to Mary J. Blige for releasing her debut project on this day in 1992. Keep going Mary, I’m behind you.

   You know those moments when you’re riding in a car, the breeze is whipping through your hair, the sun down on your neck, and you, supported by a chorus of your best girlfriends, are singing along to the radio at top volume? Don’t you wish they could last forever? There’s something special about a summer bop. It is a song that is just so undeniably upbeat and fun, it demands being blasted from a rolled down window.  It should come as no surprise that some of the best songs to wake up to that have ever graced the radio waves were released by girl groups. According to Billboard Magazine , “There are few institutions with a prouder legacy within pop music than the girl group. For as long as the Billboard Hot 100 has existed, there have been all-female vocal groups gracing its ranks.”  Groups like The Spice Girls, TLC, Destiny’s Child, formed the anthems of our adolescence. Yes, they were beautiful and talented, but more importantly, they helped instill confidence and ambition into entire generations of young women. Today, there are still some amazing girl groups carrying this torch forward.  One of these groups is Little Mix, a UK “X Factor”-formed pop band composed of members Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall. Shortly after winning the national competition and stepping into the music scene in 2011, the girls became megawatt stars. They were the first band to ever take home first place on the British reality show, largely in part due to their insane vocals. When these four ladies come together, their harmonies blow through the roof.  The 9 Best Songs To Wake Up To Touch - Little Mix Told ya! Similar to girl groups of music industry past, Little Mix makes a point to stand up for women around the world. They write and produce a ton of their own music, and infuse it with catchy, yet empowering lyrics like, “You're the man. But I got the, I got the, I got the power. You make rain. But I'll make it, I'll make it, I'll make it shower” or “Mama told me not to waste my life. She said spread your wings my little butterfly. Don't let what they say keep you up at night. And if they give you shhhh, then they can walk on by.”  Their newest single “Bounce Back” was released earlier this May and broke into Top 100 charts all over the world. It riffs off a sample of that killer ‘90s beat from Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me),” with the addition of some cheeky lyrics. (My favorite being “Baby, keep me wetter than a bayou. The air will turn crisper and the days shorter, but regardless of what other changes this new season brings, I promise I will still be grooving to these summer tunes. After years of success in the industry, “Work From Home” became one of the group’s biggest hits and has currently racked up over two billion views on YouTube. The sexy lyrics on top of the simple synth beat are a match made in heaven, and certified “Work From Home” as one of the biggest songs of 2016.    Lemonade - Danity Kane It’s no secret that Danity Kane was a girl group with internal issues. Members came and went, there were constant rumours of studio fights and the group itself disbanded multiple times. For some reason, this only made me more OBSESSED with them. Although the 2008 released song “Damaged” is probably the girls’ most popular song to date, “Lemonade” is the underappreciated bop I recommend all Danity Kane inquirers listen to first. The girls get a chance to show off their vocals on a hard, rhythmic beat.  Spice Up Your Life - The Spice Girls There is nothing more fun than a song that requires you to scream in order to sing it! Like Little Mix, the Spice Girls are a British pop group, but that did not stop them from achieving world domination. The original group, composed of members Scary Spice (Melanie Brown ), Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisolm), Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell), Baby Spice (Emma Bunton), and Posh (Victoria Beckham), was formed in 1994 and became an entertainment force to be reckoned with. In fact, their debut album Spice is still the best-selling girl group album of all time. Between their eccentric outfits, iconic hairstyles, dynamic voices, and girl power-focused tunes, there was no stopping this group from becoming the cultural icons they were always destined to be.  Hold On - En Vogue  En Vogue is one of the few groups on this list that are still performing together to this day. The group, which has retained half of its original members, has sold millions upon millions of records including this one, “Hold On.” The first minute of the song is acapella magic—completely dedicated to showcasing why these women are considered some of the best R&B vocalists of all time.   Jumpin’ Jumpin’ - Destiny’s Child  “Ladies leave your man at home. The club is full of ballers and their pockets full grown. And all you fellas leave your girl with her friends. ‘Cause it’s eleven-thirty and the club is jumpin’ jumpin’.” Shout out to every girl who used to sing these lyrics at the top of her lungs, even though she didn’t have a boyfriend. I see you. In fact, I am you. Although Destiny’s Child also saw some member fluctuation, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams , and Beyoncé (often called DC3) are considered the holy trio. If I am being honest, every single one of Destiny’s Child’s songs could go on this list—their discography is unmatched—but Jumpin’ Jumpin’ is a particularly perfect song. It’s not super heavy on vocals, in fact Beyoncé’s voice is the only one really heard on the track, but still manages to exude the sex appeal and groove of the entire group. Wannabe - The Spice Girls  Yes, I am including another Spice Girls song on here. No, I will not apologize for it. “Wannabe” is one of the most well known songs in the world and there are few things more fun than shouting “If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends” at the top of your lungs, with your actual best girlfriends beside you. A sure fire hit at every birthday party, karaoke bar, and road trip, “Wannabe” is the perfect song for your summer jams list. In fact, something tells me it’s already on there.  When I Grow Up -The Pussycat Dolls  Okay, confession time. When I was younger, I thought I was going to be a Pussycat Doll. For a while, it was my only dream. I would dance on my bed, pretending it was the car from the music video, and mimic every piece of intricate choreography. I just knew that if I sang loud enough, somehow lead vocalist Nicole Scherzinger was going to come and pluck me out of suburban Long Island in order to usher me into the wild world of the Pussycats. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. Fortunately, I have learned to continue living life despite the pain of this crushed dream, but whenever I hear a Pussycat Doll song I am instantly transported back to that bedroom. Believe it or not, these are just a few of my favorite girl groups; naming them all would be impossible. Even more than my love for their music, is my respect and admiration for the platforms they have created to empower other women. A group of women on stage working, singing, and dancing together is a beautiful thing to witness. It represents a special sisterly bond that is not often seen in the male-dominated music industry. I am always thrilled to support these women year round, but the summer feels like an especially perfect time to crank their music all the way up. Whether you like songs about sex or power or love or pain, there is a girl group bop waiting out there for you. Hopefully, this list helps you find it.
