This year has been at least slightly mad in terms of ao3 stuff - first posted in July after at least three years of discovering ao3 and wishing that I had the time, motivation or skill to create something at all like the amazing works I was reading. That first fic (Long Hair) I actually wrote back in February, when I had no idea I was going to have so much time to write this year. I didn’t have a word count aim, all I really wanted to do was practice my writing skills a bit before I got to trying some actual original work.
Either way, I’m damn glad I did it - I’ve learned a lot. 100k words total seemed like utter madness before, but now I no longer doubt that, with a solid plan and some dedication, when I get round to writing original work, I can hit a word count that actually classes as a ‘novel’, even if that is closer to 50k per work. I’ve learned more about what helps me get in the zone when writing. I’ve learned how to get the brain juices flowing for new ideas. On top of that, I’ve become much happier with writing somewhat shorter ideas being just as valid.
I don’t have a goal for 2021 really, just as I didn’t have a goal for 2020, but I want to get at least one new long-ish story completed by the time school kicks off (I’m almost certain my writing will drop off the face of the Earth when it does).
Really though, fic has been the defining part of this year for me, what with the lockdowns cancelling my gap year plans. I’d wanted to do things to find some new skills and some confidence, and, unexpected as this way has been, I definitely have! Thank you to everyone who has read or supported my work at any time during this past year, and I'm looking forward to just as good a coming one!
