just unfollowed a ton of SKAM blogs that haven’t been active in years 🥺 got me reminiscing about the origins of this blog. oh i miss the days of season 4, rotting away in my bed waiting for new clips to drop, the humor was top tier as well as the memes, the drama between sana and those mean girls, noora kissing yousef! sana and isak becoming besties, even reuniting with the boys, the girl squad!! “her and i are soulmates” i just miss yousana and everything about season 4. i wanted to be norwegian so badly 💀

Thoughts on Skam (OG)

After more than a year I finally finished watching the original Skam. Maybe it’s because I watched 5 remakes in a row from prior to it, but I fully admit I checked out of Noora’s season early on. I know the OG is widely considered the best version of Skam, but honestly, I disagree. I wouldn’t even put it in my Top 3.

Season one was okay. It was the basic first season. Those of ya’ll who remember my posts from 2020-2021 know I don’t really care much for the first two seasons of a given Skam (Execept for Austin and NL since those only did the frist two seasons.). This was no different. It is the baseline. I’d need to reatch to get my exact feelings down (I’m not doing that.), but I liked it as much as I can like any version of season one nowadays.

Seasons two through four were done better in the remakes. No version of season two will ever top Skam España‘s season three and no version of Noorhelm will ever surpass  or be as good as Norandro. I just don’t see it happening for me. I spent most of Noora’s season snarking to myself and waiting for it to end. Season three? I enjoyed it more than season two, but Druck did it better. Best I can say it that I like the main couple more than France’s, but that’s a low bar to clear.

Which brings me to season four. Outside of France Skam just can’t seem to do a good Sana season. Season four is honestly France’s best season and if not the best it’s the second best (Though I haven’t seen their 9 and 10 yet.). I remember liking that Druck allowed their Sana to call out the bullshit happening to her, but not much else. OG’s was honestly kind of boring. Sana and Yousef were kind of cute together, but that didn’t amount to much. I’ll give it points for actually focusing on Sana but that’s something to be expected.

Overall though? I’m not sure if it’s because of burnout (Again, I watched NL, España, France, Italia, and Druck over the course of more than a year with little breaks between them.), if I’m just that biased in other version’s favors, or if the OG is overhyped but the OG was a letdown for me. Looking over my previous post this is honestly the most negative I’ve been about Skam. It might honestly be my least favorite version of the 7 I’ve seen.

Next up is WTFOCK. I still have seasons 9-10 of France, 7-8 of Druck, and season 5 of Italia to watch but I’m not really feeling the mood to return to any of them right now. I dunno. I’m kind of exited to get to know a new cast. I’ll start it on Monday and I think I’ll go back to seasonal thoughts for it. See ya’ll next week!

yeah for sure!! i’ll put what i remember under the keep reading tab for ppl who wanna hear about it :) i only went to the panel, not the rewatch (bc money lmao) so there are probably some other things they talked about that i missed, but i’m sure there are other ppl on here that can fill you in on any gaps that i miss!

it was valeria (jo), julie (megan), and lakeisha* (shay), and pedro (p jo) on the panel (he was the moderator, the other three did most of the talking), though they did mention other castmates throughout :,) 

*lakeisha was the name they went by on the panel, and in the info before the panel it said they use they/them pronouns, so that’s how i’ll be referring to them throughout this 

all of them started out by talking about what they’re doing currently, julie said she’s dropping out of school because her therapist told her “you as a person matters more than you as a student” which i thought was a great sentiment as well 

lakeisha said they’ve been making a lot of clothes and music (also throughout the whole thing they kept showing us their shoes and they left to pee like halfway through something they were answering one time hfjskaj)

they then talked about their audition processes (val had the most chaotic series of audtions omg i would love to see her audition tapes)

val originally read for either jo or megan, and she had literally just moved there like right before casting and almost didn’t go to her audition

she said that she decided to be the loudest person in the room so that they couldn’t ignore her, and that carried her through most of the rounds of auditioning

she said that at the end she said “if you don’t choose me, which you should choose me, but if you don’t, please choose another latinx actress because you have no idea how much it means to see someone who looks like you on screen”

julie auditioned because she was hoping julie (andem) would bring lisa and tarjei and she basically wanted a free meet and greet djkfshk 

she found out about skam og on tumblr !! she’s one of us 😌 

she thinks julie andem is the coolest person in the world 

they told her that she was pretty much everything they envisioned megan to be, so they cast her fairly early on and then had her partner with the marlon prospects 

giovanni, who eventually played tyler, auditioned for marlon and they kissed during their audition even though they weren’t supposed to

julie went to high school with till who ended up playing marlon and people would always ask her what it was like to get to make out with him and she was just like .... we just working bruh

lakeisha found the ad to audition on instagram and decided why not because it said it was a paid job 

they looked up a bunch of improv games the night before because they had no experience and had no idea what they were doing

in the audition julie asked what the tattoos on their hand meant (and also the one thing lakeisha was excited about being out of contract was that they could get as many tattoos as they wanted without asking for permission)

they all had a lot of love for julie andem and loved working with her

val said that she’d always try to make julie laugh and she said that julie is the reason og and austin are so good, because it’s her story and her vision 

they roasted the shit out of fb too (as they should)

basically fb ghosted them and never renewed the show but also never cancelled it so technically they don’t even know if anyone else could get the rights to reboot the show somewhere else (lakeisha said ‘skam austin onlyfans’ lmao)

i don’t remember which one of them said it but they said fb is like an inconsistent dad lollll

they also think that fb sort of finessed julie/her team because they were under the impression that it would be like og where they had their own website for the show and everything, but then it ended up just being a facebook page

they also filmed promo for season 1 that never ended up being used but they don’t know why 

lakeisha felt super disrespected by the fact that not only did they not get their season, but also the fact that they just dropped the show like it was nothing and none of them even found out that they probably weren’t getting more seasons until they saw that their instagram accounts were gone

everyone was upset about the igs getting deleted too because they put so much work into the content on there for it all to just disappear 

val said “no one tells a story like the one that was about to be told” and everyone agreed

val said that if the show would have continued, jo would have been undocumented and they would have shown her trying to navigate college (not only were we robbed of a jo season, we were robbed of college seasons 😤)

val said that when they wrapped s2 she was like finally!!! because now they could get into the stories that they really wanted to tell and really knew would make a difference (everyone vehemently agreed)

they were proud of the fact that they’re the most diverse cast and that they don’t just treat the characters of color like sidekicks like the other remakes do

julie talked about how skam france was the only remake to have jonas not accept isak right away when he was coming out and how it was suspicious that he happened to be the only non white jonas and that was the choice they made

val said that druck is the only remake she’s watched but she likes it

they also talked about how, even though it’s great that the cast was so diverse, practically everyone behind the scenes was white

val said that she didn’t really think about it much at the time because she found it hard to speak up since she was very young and inexperienced but looking back she wishes jo’s body wasn’t so fetishized as a latina (she didn’t clarify whether she was talking on a production level or within the fandom, but she talked about costuming so i assumed she meant more on a production level)

they all wished there was more representation off screen as well as on

shay x megan was brought up and julie said that shay was going to have her own love interest (am!even !!!!) come season three, and that it wouldn’t have been megan 

she also said that megan was mostly just confused and like ‘haha i kiss girls when i’m drunk’ but then she also said that megan and shay never had feelings for each other at the same time so 👀 

she was upset that they made megan and marlon get back together at the end of season 2 because she wasn’t a fan of them together, but she said it also makes sense because a lot of teen girls go back to their toxic exes even when they know it’s not good for them

lakeisha said that they hated shay’s acrylic nails because it didn’t make sense to them for her to have them (especially since shay was a musician)

they also said that they’ve been pretty confident and open with their sexuality since they were around 12, and that one time in middle school they dated a boy because he had an xbox and then they were like oh no is this toxic am i using him because he actually has feelings for me?? hdskafja 

they also said that the cfgc music happened because they heard that the boys from og also had a song and at first i was like wtf are they talking about but now i think they meant the penetrator song 💀💀 

julie has a cfgc shirt :,) and they all stole a bunch of clothes and stuff from set, val said she took a bunch of outfits that jo never wore which makes her sad to think about now 

val’s favorite scene to film was the car scene in s1 before the party (she said it was one of the best moments of her life) and julie said she liked that one as well (val said there’s a shot of her looking into the camera and flipping it off but they didn’t include it in the show, i feel robbed)

people asked how it felt for lakeisha to be the first lesbian isak and they said that they didn’t feel like they were, because they didn’t really get the chance :(( but they also said that the idea itself was very intimidating and there was a lot of pressure around it

they also said that they and gio were very very close both on screen and off, they said it wasn’t even like they were an extension of one person, that’s how close they got

there were a lot of improvised scenes, particularly with val, and she also said that incorporating spanish into jo’s dialogue was mostly improvised 

julie, val, and pedro also all talked about how they’re all mexican, and how each of their life experiences vary so much from one another, on the show and off and julie said megan’s upbringing was a lot like hers 

they all also said that they liked the music the show used and a lot of them have emotional attachments to a lot of the songs 

val said she wishes they used more frank ocean and i agree 

they also said they’re not sure if there are bloopers or anything, but they’d love to see them if there are

Ooh interesting, I love to read long answers. I'm going to guess from the Dennys reference you're not from Europe so I think it has something to do with culture as well. I'm from the UK and drank for the first time at a house party when I was 15, very nearly 16. There were a fair amount of house parties but not nearly as many as Skam and even the popular crowd only starting really sleeping around when they were 16/17 and we know HS is based on teens two years younger than that (1/2)

Oh heyyyy anon! This has come up a few times now. Yeah, I was in the US for high school, but I’ve also lived in Europe. But you’re right about cultural differences, and it’s one of the things I love most about skam and its remakes. They each reflect the culture that created them. It’s for them. The changes, the personalities, the little details (that we missed bc we don’t know and that others appreciated bc they do, and then they share them with us). It’s fun to see how they own the story. That’s so cool that you’ve been able to spend time in Norway and see that! SkamIt makes me nostalgic bc there are so many details that remind me of living there. The caffè machine my beloved. Ironically I’ve never watched Skam Austin. 

And I do love how there’s room for both kinds of stories, honestly all kinds of stories about growing up and figuring out who you are and who you want to be. Not everyone follows the same path, and not everyone has the same opportunities, the same situation, the same influences. We need variety in media. As much as I bemoan the lack of diverse, or any, lgbtq+ media in my youth, the fact that it exists now and exists in such variety is exciting, utterly freaking thrilling, and it’s only going to get better. More and more ppl will see themselves depicted in film and books, and it can only make us feel less alone, less overlooked. How wonderful!

(I didn’t experience that soft romance in hs either...lol. It was a train wreck, but I am all about seeing beautiful stories with happy, hopeful endings about young love. I’d like to think some ppl pull it off, and those that don’t have their whole future ahead of them. There’s no rush.)

Admittedly it’s been awhile since I watched Skam or looked through their instagram posts, but in my memory it always felt like the instas were just used to give another glimpse into the characters, never anything really flashy, and the way each character used their accounts always felt really true to who they were. But I think the remakes use it way more as an extension of the storylines and it feels less realistic? (For lack of a better word) Like a lot of posts just feel like pure

staged fan service (see: Wtf, Skamfr) or they go a little overboard with content (see: Druck) that goes beyond what I’d actually envision the characters “sharing”. I don’t know if that makes sense? And I could be idealizing how Skam used it too, since like I said it’s been awhile since I looked at the og stuff. But yeah, I feel like the remakes have turned the social media aspect of the shows into a bit of a cringefest. 😳 What do you think?

Hi anon 📳 Sorry for the delay, I think this is a very interesting ask, and I wanted to think about it a bit before answering.  

I’ll leave aside the question of realism, which you noted yourself you used for lack of a better word. I think at this point the discussion about the way Skam approaches “realism” is more nuanced than how it was used when there wass only one Skam.   

I guess I would say that Skam used the instagram accounts mainly in two ways: 1) so the characters could all show how they wanted other people to see them, and 2) as the cherry on top to a character arc, when the character would post something more vulnerable on his/her ig account. 

I think in general the remake teams didn’t fully get the point of the ig accounts because these teams weren’t really fans who followed Skam as it dropped. They came to the ig accounts as a finished product. 

Skam France posted a veritable torrent of content for s1 and s2, and I think some of it was really good. I really liked Yann’s ig account, for instance. I thought his posts really leaned on Jonas’ political side, which not all remake Jonases did. I also liked that the girl squad would hang out at random places (like a Sephora and a park iirc) without Manon, in s2, to show how Manon was growing distant from the squad because of her relationship with Charles. 

But one thing that started with Skam France was creating ig content for every clip. So that when a clip dropped, a bunch of pics and stories from every character involved in the scene would also drop. I think this is just not really necessary? Most high school students don’t document every school day like this, or even document every time they go to the movies, meet up to discuss fundraising ideas, go buy some snacks at a convenience store, and so on and so forth. 

On the other hand, we also have to allow for the idea that technology marches on. When Skam was airing, ig stories were still pretty new. Most people posted memes and random shit to their instagram feed, rather than to their stories. Nowadays feeds are more curated, and stories are for shitposting. So one aspect of how Skam used igs, which was to post content that would clearly define a character (such as Paradise Hotel memes for Eva, cheesy inspirational quotes for Vilde, or news clips for Sana) would probably all just go on stories nowadays. Compare the Skam igs with the Skam Austin igs in s1 (or, like, your memory of the Austin igs, since FB deleted them............), which were also created by Julie Andem and Mari Magnus, and we can already see some changes in the way teens used instagram (even allowing for cultural differences between Norway and the US). The pics would look “better” as in more professional, better lit, better angles used. Whereas the Skam characters seemingly would take a pic and then posted it, it was as if the Austin characters had taken a bunch of pics and posted only the really good ones. I also don’t remember the Austin characters posting memes either to their feed or even to their stories. 

When it comes to Druck... I absolutely agree that I don’t really buy high school students would post that much content and so personal, and it also loses the effect when there’s so much content posted. For instance, Nora’s Nov 13 post is the first time Zoe appears in Nora’s ig feed, which was a momentous occasion because Zoe confessed to her sister that she felt judged by Nora. But Nora had previously posted so much Zoe content on her stories, that the milestone of posting Zoe to her feed went unnoticed.

But then on the other hand, Druck has a limited episode runtime (where Skam didn’t) and viewers have consistently responded favorably to the Skams developing storylines on social media away from the main. People ate it up when Isak posted pics of his life with Even in s4. And I don’t necessarily dislike the concept of giving more meaning to certain lines or moments by adding context over social media. E.g.: without social media, we would have little to no idea what Finn and Zoe argued about towards the end of the season. Thanks to the chats we do, and thanks to the ig content, we’re actually invested in Finn and Zoe working out, because we’ve seen them act coupley in so much content. What about Kiki and Carlos’ apartment? Would we care that much about it if there hadn’t been so much content of the gen 1 characters “renovating” it? 

Since we’re talking about different remakes, I admit I’ve never been a huge fan of how much content the Skam España characters posted. Much like with Skam France, I feel like sometimes they just shot content to go with the clip, pretty much to promote the clip in a way, and when I look at their feeds now, I just feel there are so many generic posts that are super cute, yes, but don’t really tell me anything about the characters or what they were going through at the time or what they wanted people to think their lives were like at the time. To be clear, a lot of their posts do tell me stuff about the characters and what they were going through and what they wanted people to think their lives were like. But many of those posts could be gone and I wouldn’t miss them. For me, it’s the difference between having Mari Magnus, who for so long was Julie Andem’s right hand woman and assisted in every step of creating Skam, come up with and post the ig content, and hiring someone like Gominuke, a well-known influencer, who knows how to use ig to promote a product. While we’re talking about the way a social media manager’s background and personality will affect the sm content for the Skam, Druck hired Farid-Philippe Bouatra starting with s2, and he was really good at coming up with reasons why introverted characters such as Matteo would post consistently (#MatteoMonday and #FlorenziFriday). 

Anyway. Obviously Skam France hiring professional photographers for their sm content and posting these photoshoots to the characters’ accounts is cringy as all fuck, and no one beats Wtfock at generic, bland posts that don’t say anything about who a character is, what they’re going through or what they want people to think their lives are like. There was a time where I was slightly salty about Wtfock characters posting more memes and shitposts than the Skam España characters, but that all went away after oh, the 20th generic food post coming out of Antwerp. People come at Nora Grace for her feminist posts, but do we want to talk about Zoë’s abundance of shallow “girl power!” (I will not call those posts feminist) pics? Or what about literally monetizing the social media by having Kato post a legit ad for makeup?

I was first introduced to the Skam universe through a remake, but I’m always so fascinated to find people who watched OG Skam first and then proceeded to watch most or all of the remakes even though they don’t really seem like big fans of the OG. So I’m curious—what drove you to watch remakes? Have you just grown more indifferent toward OG Skam over the years since you first watched or maybe you were hoping to see the remakes improve on it? (You can totally ignore this if you want to btw lol)

oh man anon you don’t even realize this but this is a question and a half for me skjnfskndfs i’m gonna try my best to keep things relatively basic and straightforward tho

so here’s the truth: og skam actually ranks among some of the most memorable shows i’ve ever seen. yes, i have a lot of criticisms of it. i had a lot of criticisms when i first watched it and i have even more now that i’ve had time and distance. but i also think og skam is one of the best made teen shows i’ve ever seen. the real time format, the transmedia aspect, the themes explored, the way the show really takes its time with its clips and its characters, how the show treats the issues its characters are going through seriously despite them being young characters [or perhaps in some ways because of that] - as much guff as i give julie andem i do believe she created something really special with og skam. and my favorite thing about it was always the format, which was notably one of the things remakes were contractually obligated to keep.

[worth noting i have a history of being into shows with a similar format, actually. a few years before skam i was really into literary adaptation vlogseries - if you’ve ever heard of the lizzie bennet diaries, think shows that fit that particular subgenre of online content - and many of them did things like create social media accounts for their characters that would update in real time and drop episodes in real time without intro music or credits to simulate “real life” vlogs. skam does many of the same things but, like, with more polish and a specific focus on creating stories for teenagers. my point is i was basically primed to enjoy shows in this format.]

so i think at least some of the appeal of the remakes was in the format of the show for sure. hm, what else what drew me to the remakes? i’ve always been kind of fascinated by, like, the meta of adaptations and the way they interact with the Canon and such. i mean i’ve been into fanfic for so long which i think speaks for itself, and also my interest in lit vlogseries was in large part because i loved seeing what choices writers would make to adapt old classics i already love and know for a new environment. like i just really find that kind of thing super interesting, to think of how new stories respond to their predecessors! so i find skamverse honestly a really, really fascinating thing to follow for that reason. i mean how often do you get to see a bunch of different teams try to adapt the source material for a new audience, arriving at different choices and conclusions in terms of how to adapt the same story, all at the same time? it’s so interesting to follow, i love seeing what parts of og canon new teams decide to keep and discard and update, i love seeing how the remakes being specifically for different cultures affect the writing, honestly it’s just all been very fun for me to follow.

also - probably helps that i was very, very invested in og seasons 3 and 4. always helps to actually be a fan of the characters and stories that are being adapted ad nauseam lol. admittedly i don’t like s1 as much [though i understand why it’s so beloved by this fandom!] and i dislike s2 so much that i’ve skipped out on most of the s2 remakes [although... not as many as you might anticipate skdjfnsdk] but i do feel that s1 is really important for establishing the themes and goals and characters of the show, which is why i’ve seen as many versions of it as i have.

Last thing i want to say is - yeah honestly another big reason is the opportunity the remakes present for telling more diverse stories than the og had the capability of telling. i was pretty lukewarm about the remakes up until skam austin started dropping and it was immediately apparent that they had adapted their eva into a girl of color and their isak into a black girl who might possibly be a lesbian, which sort of made me sit up and think, oh okay, there might actually a chance of getting to see characters i actually relate to more in the context of this show i love. are there other shows and other stories i can get well-written and diverse representation from? of course there are and there always has been, but it’s also nice to get those things from a franchise i already have a special place in my heart for [albeit a simultaneously quite complicated one].

tl;dr - i actually did [and still do, in many ways] have a special place in my heart for og skam; i’m a huge nerd about the Meta of it all; and it’s been really rewarding for me to see the remakes attempt to build on og skam in unique and diverse ways. i hope that makes sense, anon!

Jonas x Eva pairings ranked by whether i think they should get back together (i haven’t seen Skam Austin pls don’t kill me)

1. Jonas and Hanna

They are sweet wholesome darlings who make each other better (after season 1 because let’s be honest s1 is a shitshow for all of them). They are also dumbasses and I’m a sucker for a good dumbass. Their breakup at the end of s1 emotionally scarred me. I actually teared up. Now they’re back together and I couldn’t be happier for them. They are one of the few couples on this list who i can genuinely see growing up and getting married and having 2.5 kids and absolutely loving their sickeningly domestic lifestyle.

2.Giovanni and Eva

They’re my parents. I love them. They clearly still love each other (I haven’t yet watched s3 so pls don’t kill me if i’ve not caught up). They both deserve the happiness they bring one another and they’ve both grown considerably since they broke up, to the point where i think they’re mature enough to work through rough patches together unlike before. The only other couple on the list that I could see growing up and getting married. Think about it, family holidays to Bracciano maybe with a rugrat or two playing with them in the lake. It’s an idyllic image. They’d be so happy.

3. Kes and Isa

Underrated couple dynamic: dumbass stoner with a heart of gold no. 1 and dumbass stoner with a heart of gold no. 2. They are cuties. And I’m not just saying this because I’m in love with Isa and want her to be happy but also because I’m in love with kes and want him to be happy. And they make each other happy. Also Isa’s cheeks are very squishable and I appreciate that Kes takes the opportunity to squish them whenever he can. Also he was going to go down on her in the cabin episode and for that he has my respect more than any of the other s1 jonas’s in that department.

4. Jonas and Eva

Ah, yes, the dysfunctional dumbasses that started it all. jk i love them with all my heart. And I do think they should’ve gotten together eventually. And, yeah, they did, but idk their reunion at the end of s4 felt kinda rushed?? but i don’t doubt that if they were given ample time to flesh out their respective stories at that point in time, i could totally see it happening. Now that they have grown, they are much better for each other than before. Not to mention that they make each other laugh and i’m a sucker for laughter. Wouldn’t be too sad if they didn’t tho as long as they made Eva canonically bi - pls just make Eva bi im begging.

5. Jorge and Eva

Okay imma be completely honest, Skam Espana isn’t my favourite remake (no shade it just didn’t settle in my bones the way my favourites did and i have yet to watch season 3) and i barely remember s1 but what i do remember is being so heartbroken when jorge revealed why he was with the ingrid character (i’ve forgotten her name and am too tired to look it up) because he was being so sweet and eva had fucked up so badly. I feel like Eva needs more time to grow before they get back together - if they do - but (from what i remember) she clearly seems to be trying not to think about how much she misses him during s2 and so it’s difficult to deny that feelings are still there.

6. Jens and Jana

Look, I’ve only recently started to come around to liking Jana again (I went through a period of disliking her considerably - i found her irritating and childish and she reminded me of all the people i hated at school) but now that I’ve realised she’s actually a dumbass who has no idea what she’s doing 80% of the time and who just wants to be there for her friends but isn’t always entirely sure how, I’m starting to love her. Seeing her and Jens interact properly again in wtFOCKDOWN has been very vindicating for me because Jens said something that I completely agree with. They shouldn’t get back together. They are always going to love each other - what they had was incredibly special to them - but they weren’t good as a couple and they shouldn’t try again. Jana should knit him a BFF scarf.

7. Yann and Emma

Bros. I love them both to bits, but my babies Yann and Emma were an appalling couple. Yann was an asshole to her and Emma was so insecure and unhappy the entire time. Unlike with some of the others, I felt as though the bad times they had tainted the good ones, rather than the good ones making the bad times seem not so bad. Since they broke up, Emma has come out of her shell so my and has become the gangly giraffe lady with a penchant for drinking a little too much and avoiding doing work that we know and adore today. Yann is so much less of an asshole now and has turned into a dude i’d genuinely like to hang out with. I love them separately. I love them as friends. Like I said, they’re bros. They have a solid platonic bromance going on and if skam france tries to get them back together at the end I swear to god I’m going to riot

- Wtfock is crap. Feel free to disagree in the comments, by the way, i'm totally open to discussion. The girlsquad is mean (esp the tryna find out if robbe's gay thing). jens was a horrible bf and friend in general, then he randomly got a redemption arc that was totally unearned. they had robbe and sander get beaten up on the street only to leave it UNADDRESSED for the rest of the season!! and don't even get me started on S4. Just no.

- I like skamfr, don't get me wrong, i think the acting is some of my favorite in all of skam, but it's just so melodramatic that it loses skams essence. there are certain parts that are just plain unrealistic, like the paint scene (cinematically, it's gorgeous, but realistically? girl bye), the car crash (😂), and the entirety of S5. i'm not gonna talk abt S1 or S2 because chile.. yeah. i give them props for giving daphnes eating disorder a storyline, though.

- Druck is immaculate. I can empathize with almost all of the characters, and S3 was groundbreakingly good. Matteo and David felt real and authentic. The only criticism I have for Druck is the way they handled Mia's sexuality. It felt like it was added for shock value, rather than contributing anything to the plot line, but i'm prepared to be corrected if S5 goes further down that route.

- I know a lot of people disagree, but so far i've actually really enjoyed all of the changes skam españa has made (finally a non-snakey isak, lucas rubio 🥰). so far Amira's season has been really good and i'm choosing to ignore the spoilers. I appreciate the wlw rep, however i don't really like cris as a character. she is kinda careless and can be ignorant at times, particularly when she genuinely considered dumping joana.

- Skam nl is my favorite remake. the music, the aesthetics, the characters, everything was just *mwah*. i was heartbroken when it was cancelled.

I never finished Italia, it was boring. please don't kill me. I liked Austin, but honestly didn't feel much of a connection to it. I liked shay, though, and i really would've liked to see her season.

ok so each skam remake has its issues but my favorites are skamNL, skam españa, and skam austin; though druck is also good. imo these are the only ones worth watching and each of them bring something different to the table!

the ones i like:

skam netherlands: only got 2 seasons but the characters are so fun and stylish and it has a really great vibe, i barely watched season 2 bc that’s the noorhelm season lmfao but anyway i think it’s worth a watch for sure!! i loveee isa (eva) and liv (noora) especially. also esra (she doesn’t have an og skam equivalent) is so beautiful and a lesbian i declare

skam españa: the first 3 seasons were actually so perfect, and then they messed up in the amira (sana) season unfortunately. it also has a really lovely vibe and a lot of love between the characters and the only joneva i would support getting back together! also season 2 has a relationship between 2 bi girls as the focus!!! and season 3 is the only season among all skam versions that deals with abuse & also the only decent noorhelm. i think this one is objectively the best, but also they really dropped the ball in season 4 :(

skam austin: some people think it’s cringey but it’s honestly my favorite! the only female isak (shay!! my url!!!!) and it’s just a ton of fun and sparks joy and i miss it so much - also only got 2 seasons :(((

druck (german skam): i hate mia (noora)’s season more than i can tell you (altho i like mia :( just like fuck druck’s noorhelm & it’s so lesbophobic like...) BUT their season 3 is genuinely so great and original and their even is trans which is just amazing. also they’ve continued with seasons 5 and 6 with a new generation of characters INCLUDING FATOU WHO I WOULD DIE FOR!!!! (lesbian) also good vibes. also they had the least bad sana season i think. 

the ones i don’t like

skam france: the one everyone rags on but it deserves it bc it’s legit so bad..... like they took skam (good vibes) and made it into a melodramatic teen show with like sex scenes and literally zero lighting. their evak (eliott and lucas) was pretty good but their other seasons are bad. i wouldn’t even go so far as to say it’s one of the best evaks honestly, but their season 3 is one of skam france’s better seasons, if not the best / only good one. but yeah skam france really took a teen show and made it dramatic and adult-y and it’s just bad vibes

skam italia: racist mess.... dont go near

remember, these are my PERSONAL opinions. please do not attack me for being human and having opinions :) if you want to know why i dislike some characters over others, feel free to ask! but remember, in the words of noora, be kind, always! also, these lists are not definite of which remake i feel is the best/superior. i DO NOT think any remake is superior to the others, but i do believe some have better actors in general and a better production team. that does not mean that people shouldn’t/can’t enjoy them!

so the first tier list i saw was ranking each remake based on characters. because i foresee a lot of confusion towards my picks i’ll explain some *controversial* opinions below. you will see some trends but they do not represent the quality of the entire remake. they merely are the characters i felt more connected to with my own personal experiences.

ok, so i know some people will get mad at me for putting joana last for the even remakes. listen. i love all the even characters. joana was not the strongest even remake though, imo. this has nothing to do with the fact that the evak relationship was wlw. it upsets me when some people of the skam fandom generalize people who don’t like crisana (skam austin/shay as well) as lesbiphobic. i personally did not connect with joana’s character, that is all.

as for the isaks, i put lucas VDH and shay as last because we never saw their seasons, so i felt as if they didn’t have the opportunity to be compared in general. still fantastic characters though.

the next tier list i saw was couples. obv a lot of the superior couples in this list are evak remakes (because noorhelm is inherently flawed, eva/jonas has the least screen time as a couple, and not many remakes have done s4)

it’s kind of funny that the chris/eva relationships are always the shit ones...hmm...anyways yeah

let’s start with the bad: yeah, a lot of williams are in here. i don’t like his character (probably because there are way too many guys he reminds me of that take advantage of girls/guys’ feelings). britt, while somewhat reedeemable, was portrayed horribly in wtfock, so much that she wasn’t even the one to give the minute by minute speech. and i cannot bring myself to rank italian sana higher than bad. if you cannot find a muslim actress to play a muslim role because muslims are underrepresented in media and need that representation, you get no vote. beatrice is a good actress but i cannot.

and for the alright category: there are a lot of skam france characters there. i just feel like their stories are underdeveloped and s5 villainized so many of them ooof. there are also a good amount of skam italia characters there, and it’s the same thing with france. again, a good chunk of skam austin characters. i think only having 2 seasons is a hinderance to this because it’s less screen time to analyze them and see their characters grow.

Rebel Rebel by David Bowie (wtfock) - okay, this song is fantastic. everything about it just makes me want to get up and run around and those are my personal favorite kind of songs. i never really heard any david bowie before wtfock so i have sander to thank for this

Dick in the Air by Peaches (skam) - this is what i consider to be the most iconic skam song of all time. the pure power this song has. it’s unmatched. it just makes me want to go kick some ass and i love that. not to attack another song but i’d love to watch wildfire go this hard

Fuck the Pain Away by Peaches (skam nl) - not only does this song slap but it is the first song i ever listened to while driving alone, so it has sentimental value. it’s peaches, so it has similar energy to dick in the air, but if you ask me this one is more singable and more energetic. and this scene was beautiful

Goldrushed by The Royal Concept (skam italia) - to me, this song has big summer vibes. it also just feels like happiness and having fun with your friends. maybe that’s on account of the scene its playing over but that doesn’t change the gleeful and almost nostalgic feelings this song gives me

Girls Love Shoes by Benji Hughes (skam) - one day back in june i couldn’t stop thinking of this song. i listened to it like five times and that day was also a really good day so it would make sense i have a positive association with it. a 10/10 song to slow walk to

Clean Eyes by SYML (druck) - this song (as well as du bist anders) is from my favorite clip across all the remakes. it just has the best energy. it’s the type of song that you could scream at the top of your lungs with your best friends. i physically cannot be unhappy when i listen to it. i listened to this song on a bike ride around my local outdoor middle school campus and i have never been happier. i was incapable of going slow, i just had to speed around and smile. i was the human form of elation

The Fall by The Bug and Copeland (wtfock) - this isn’t the type of music i listen to, but i remember thinking it was unlike anything i’d really heard so i fell in love with it. also that scene is just cool lol

Head Over Heels by Tears For Fears (skam) - not only is this song iconic, i also love it. another great song to ride around an empty middle chool campus while listening to it, but slower this time. it really wanna makes me fall in love

Du bist anders by AnnenMayKantereit (druck) - the beginning of this song just sounds so nice and kind of calming then the song gets more intense but i love it. and i don’t understand a single word but that doesn’t matter because i will sing it, even if it sounds like nonsense

Pink + White by Frank Ocean (skam austin) - i didn’t even register that i liked this song the first time after i heard it in the show, but i heard the beginning of it while i threw some music on in the background and i immediately was like “song cool song where from” and i was hooked

Get Outta My Face by Pussycat and The Dirty Johnsons (skam austin) - this is pretty much my music taste exactly. i heard the first couple of seconds of this song then i literally watched the credits of the episode just to hear the rest of this song. the power, the energy *chef’s kiss*

Life on Mars? by David Bowie (wtfock) - this is the type of song that i will cry/sing the lyrics to whenever i hear it, whether i was sad in the first place or not. very few songs have that affect on me so i’m mostly just impressed, though it is a pretty good song

Hold Your Horses by N U I T (skam france) - i have no idea why i like this song. no clue. i watched the season 5 trailer and i was like “YES” when this song came on and i just loved it right off the bat. i can’t describe the vibes it gives off. everything about this song is a mystery to me

Untold by RY X (druck) - the final song in the freitag 16:07 series. my heart aches when i listen to this song and it makes me want to kiss the love of my life in an empty pool. it feels like time is running out but i don’t care or some other fake deep shit. i just like this song, okay?

Life Like This by AK (wtfock) - i have no way to describe this song other than saying it slapped. i love high energy songs and this one delivers on that. i really can’t explain why i like this song so much because it’s unlike what i usually listen to but it just hypes me the fuck up. every time i listen to it, i try to sing it but i don’t know the words lol

Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap (skam nl) - i have an emotional attachment to this song because of something i will not explain. i don’t even like the song that much but i definitely know it. also good for isa being all emo

Druck Season 3 Thoughts and Expectations for Season 4

I’m starting to see why I see Druck gets as much praise as it does. This is the  best version of this storyline I’ve seen so far. If it manages to do right by Amira like I think France did for Imane this’ll officially beat the Spanish version for being the best written version of Skam I’ll have seen, assuming future seasons maintain the same level of quality (Though Austin is my baby and my favorite, even if other remakes are better written.). So far we’re 2 for 3 in terms of Druck seasons I thought were well written. Let’s hope this next season and future ones are just as good.

I loved Matteo this season. I’ve mentioned before that I didn’t much care for him but this season immediately made me feel sorry for, and by extension care about, him. I don’t know if this season changed directors or not but the way his actor portrayed him in that first clip instantly won me over. Yes Matteo messed up a lot this season (His relationship with Sara was not good for either of them for example.) and he screwed Hanna over in her season but for me at least he came across as a sweet boy that was struggling to do the right thing.  I don’t know about others but his love for David was very obvious to me as was their chemistry together in a way the other two remakes I’ve seen didn’t have (Though Cris/Joana did seem to have more chemistry in later seasons than their own in my opinion.).

That said, I’m not really sure how I feel about David? Like I love his relationship with Matteo and how they support each other but I don’t know how I feel about David as a character by himself. Like even though I don’t like Elu as a ship I love the Eliott and Lora friendship France gave us in season 6 but here I don’t really have solid feelings about David outside of the relationship. And with this next season being the end of the original generation I’m not sure it’ll have time to solidify my feelings about him as an individual. Still, even though he messed up a lot this season, he’s a better boyfriend to Matteo than Eliott was to Lucas and vice-versa so I have to give him props for that.

As for next season even though I have my own hopes for the season I am a bit worried about it. Not counting the special that I accidentally spoiled for myself the fact that not only is this season one episode shorter than every other Druck season but the last two episodes aren’t even from Amria’s point of view. And since episode one is usually setup that means she basically has only 6 episodes to herself, 7, at most as opposed to everyone else’s 10. I want to believe they can do Amira justice but I’m not sure they can. Still, Druck has done the impossible before by making the Mia/Alexander storyline actually good despite me not seeing any chemistry between and just this last season has made me care about a character I originally didn’t so hopefully they can still do Amira justice. I’ve just got to wait and see.

Well i love Eliott/Lola's friendship and i have an upcoming post on that as i said in other posts. I love lola too but i'm sorry i didn't just start watching this show because lola was invented and there's a w/w love story. I've been here for seasons and carried over from OG. I have investment in eliott for personal reasons (mental health) and elu because duh. Their stories have been long running too as i said. And you don't have to be a main to set up a plot/arc. The things between them have been set up since S3 with minute par minute talk, S4 and Idriss, S5 and the cheating perspective, and now S6 and Lola friendship. That is intentional. Do you think it's a coincidence that Lucas talked about pansexuality and eliott having more choice in S5 and suddenly Eliott has a friendship with a girl. That lucas abandonment issues haven't been resolved and are now coming to the forefront because of this friendship? That max has stated that Eliott feels he can save someone from a darkness he himself went through, that eliott himself was sorta saved from the shadows by Lucas. That neils/david specifically stated that this character can help someone even though he has bipolar disorder. That with Eliott's arc there is a focus on his SKAM. That we now have new info about it serving the season. If you understand writing. These things aren't put there for fun. They are there to imply/hint/foreshadow events actions to come. That there is a character now on the show with Lola basically female eliott. Do you think these are all coincidences. This plot we are seeing has slowly been set up not just since S3 but actually heavily developed starting in S5. And that if you now go back and watch S5 you see our main players being set up for this plot e.g  dasille relationship, daphne's ED, Eliott and his individuality, Elu trust/insecurity issues, Eliott's art and it tying into seasonal themes, Lola herself and her outlier persona etc. I don't know whether you are but there are many fans have migrated over from espana just for this season. But you have to understand there is a long term fanbase here that love Eliott, are invested in him and have been waiting for more of his insight. We are now getting that and we will talk about him. He's a hugely popular character as is Lucas and their love. I love both and i will talk about both. Sometimes i won't talk much About lola and talk more about eliott, sometimes i'll connect them and discuss their relationship, sometimes i'll make a post about just about lola, daphne, tiff, benny, movie references as i have. But this is my blog and i'll post what i want to post. You don't have to read any of this stuff. The tag is a big place, just scroll by. As for the theories- just theories. And in my theories i believe these characters are going to make mistakes, fail and grow e.g. lola self Destructing again but being her own hero by the end, eliott and lola being dragged down like lucas said but showing the strength of their friendship by the end, lucas being proven right but also proven wrong by the end. Like i said specific dialogue now being used is not just there to fill the script e.g. "and i have lucas. I can't lose this" "i think one of you may bring the other down" and eliott is heading for a rock bottom as is lola. Again just my thoughts. 👍

While I find it odd that you seem to be gatekeeping the skam france fan community, to be clear I have seen the entirety of three iterations: og, france, and austin. I believe I started OG during s2 or 3, and have seen Fr and Aus from the beginning. I’m not as interested in other versions as I’m very familiar with the plots/characters by now. I’m partial to france as a bilingual canadian as it’s nice to exercise that part of my brain; I’ve also studied/lived there briefly and have some very close friends from france so that amplifies my enjoyment. I’m also bisexual, so I also find this ‘only here for lola + w/w’ when you yourself admit to being emotionally invested in the show’s most dominant queer ship dichotomy very awkward.  to be honest, I think many skam’s fandoms tend to fixate on the esak ship and their season. friends have seen other iterations and confirmed this for me. it happened with elu as expected so I was really unsurprised when maya was introduced and fandom immediately put a lot of their investment into shipping two characters of the same gender. nearly every fandom in general does this: teen wolf, glee, supernatural to name a few – even harry potter. I’m not really a fan of the romantic subplot in lola’s season. she is not elliot 2.0 for so many reasons; she’s her own person and she doesn’t need a romantic partner to be a compelling character with a compelling story. that being said, I liked elu’s season. I particularly love maxence’s elliot; he’s my favourite even. I was thrilled to see him onscreen however briefly after S3 every time he appeared. now he’s finally his own person outside of his relationship with lucas and I couldn’t be more pleased to see that.  I’m not sure how idriss and elliot reconnecting after the attempted kiss falling out plays into lucas’ insecurity or their relationship. it’s perhaps a reminder of his bipolar disorder or the fact that he clearly had friends/relationships before lucas, but I’m not sure how it’s relevant to the season at hand. the biphobia discussion with arthur preceeding lola’s introduction as the new main is not proof that lucas’ supposed abandonment issues are founded in any way, or that he even still has them when we meet her. by insisting on it, you’re perpetuating the harmful idea that any bi or pan person will be tempted to cheat or leave (physically or emotionally) when presented with literally any person whose gender opposes their current partner. this is something that skam fr had literally left unaddressed for so long even with representation in alexia and elliot, and I was so thrilled when it finally came up. it’s very uncomfortable that you’re now using that important conversation as apparent proof that lucas will be abandoned or betrayed, inadvertently or not, by his pansexual boyfriend. I know that daphné was meant to be s6′s main and skam fr wasn’t given the rights by og’s creator. so it makes sense that she/her relationship/struggles feature heavily in her sister’s season. I’m personally thrilled cause I love her and lula is a wonderful actress. that being said, not everything is foreshadowing. not every single interaction or conversation will return to further plot or character. sometimes storylines are just resolved or dropped and awareness raised is just awareness raised. sometimes it’s wonderful and sometimes less so. I understand writing. I’m saying this as a literal former english teacher (ignoring capitalization for aesthetic lol) and assistant in film/tv post-production with an MA in media studies. “Lucas, you have nothing to worry about, it’s not like that between us.” “I know, he explained it to me.”  I’m not sure how much clearer the literal show can be about this issue. spoiler or not, it’s been made abundantly clear that lola and elliot are not romantically involved. even more importantly and I’ve said this on my blog before, you’re allowed to have intimacy with someone without forcing it into a defined familial or romantic relationship. it doesn’t mean that someone’s partner should necessarily feel threatened or abandoned and says a lot more about that person’s insecurity than either individual in the friendship. we’ve also already discussed how much I dislike this turn for lucas’ character as elliot’s apparent MH saviour so it’s not worth repeating again. as for elliot saving lola, well he literally did that already. I’m not sure what you mean by lucas ‘being proven right and proven wrong’ by the end, but you’re obviously adamant that something will happen. I have also seen maxence’s interview a few times. I’ll not argue with the ‘lucas saved elliot from that shadow’ because it literally came from the actor’s mouth, but maxence doesn’t say he can save anyone else from their struggles, but help them and I think that’s a really important distinction. this whole saving idea doesn’t seem healthy at all, especially as lola and elliot grapple with their mental health. it seems like people want to see a ‘rock bottom’ (whatever that means) for them both and it makes me a little uncomfortable. addiction and MH struggles should not have to reach a breaking point in order to be considered resolved or cathartic; they don’t even have to be resolved, because they’re not a plot device. they’re a reality for so many people. the show does a good job of not romanticizing them but some of the things I see in the tag are just... yikes.  as for his ‘dark’ side and the less than happy elu moments, I’d argue that maxence may have meant literally punching out what’s his face to save lola and the subsequent argument(s) with lucas, since that interview came out just before ep 4. but there’s still several eps to go so I could be totally wrong. who knows. it’s your right to theorize on your own blog of course and it’s not my intention to be mean. I’m just trying to further the discourse in a respectful way. I do feel that you may put a little too much stock in what’s literally said/seen and assuming a lot in the unseen gaps, rather than considering a broader context. to wrap up though, lucas is free to have this (however hurtful) fear, just as you’re free to believe it’ll for sure come to pass.  I dread seeing either lola or elliot spiral out, but as 2020 has taught me, I very rarely get what I want lol. thank you @cakepleasee for helping me sort out my thoughts!
