Growing Comprehension of Domestic Abuse
My name is Yvonne LaRose I'm an Organization Development Consultant. I want help to develop a teaching presentation about the social aspects of domestic abuse and the many forms it takes away from the domestic environment - the home. There is a provisional part of the project which is development of a domestic abuse support group that strives to empower and educate in a discreet but open manner. This is my first effort at attempting to raise funds for a project.
I'm an Organization Development Consultant. This is my first effort at attempting to raise funds for a project.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. After three years of petitioning to do a project, it was approved.
Like any other illness, domestic abuse doesn't recognize any of the things normally associated with class or status, age or race or even amount of education. It simply changes lives and then ends them - or makes them stronger in unexpected but beneficial ways.
Although we talk about many of the forms of abuse and agree that they are not acceptable, even though there are helping professions where people want to right wrongs, there are many who simply are not able to grasp the gravity of the problem. They have difficulty understanding the concept, much less how it applies to their workplace or community. It isn't helpful that our typical way of understanding abuse is the physical side of it - the bruises, cuts, maiming, and broken pieces.
Abuse is more than just physical. It's a type of domestic terrorism that emanates in the home and fans out into schools, churches, workplaces, shopping malls, and many other environments.
There are five types of abuse. All of them leave scars; only the physical leaves obvious evidence of what happened. The person (target) carries the other non-obvious scars in many other places such as a ruined credit record, homelessness, PTSD, lowered self esteem from bullying and threats. (And I haven't even mentioned harassment yet.) We need to know what those other four dynamics are. Education about the other forms is necessary so that we are better able to identify a potentially dangerous situation in the early stages (perhaps during the interview) and do something to avert or neutralize it.
I need assistance in the way of funding so that the content that is created can have the focus that it deserves and so that the quality of the content can live through the thoughts, words, and actions of those who receive it.
Why do I need funding? Because like one of those who suffers from abuse, in July I became affected and the threat of destroying this training opportunity arose when one of the sources of my income was stopped. The funding will be a type of buffer until another source of earned income is secured. The lessons I want to teach became even more personal and the perils more tangible. Likewise, the distractions have been crippling blockages. These are typical of an abusive experience.
I want to see this effort to fruition. I want to be of service to our communities and share the education in many places. I want to give you what you need to have a better, more productive, safer life.
Let me close this post by sharing some truisms about abuse.
* Abuse is not confined to the home place * Abuse is not unique to intimate partners * There are five types of general abuse * There are identifying behaviors of an abuser * Like cancer, abuse does not recognize any form of social or racial strata
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I would like your help to educate others about it and to help build a better social fabric.
