Slightly disappointed that the song “9 to 5” is still the go to idea of a radical leftist communist anthem when most people easily gloss over any of the vaguely radical sounding lyrics and turn it into an apolitical, de-fanged love letter to middle class, suburban, boomer, conservative, republican, white women with cushy, salaried, air conditioned office jobs. 🙄
There are better country, rap, gospel, blues, and rock songs that address leftist themes better.
Even “coat of many colors” does a better job of addressing poverty (in a cutesy romanticized way)

Back through the years
I go wonderin' once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors
Every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together
Sewin' every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of

Song Review: Sierra Ferrell - “Coat of Many Colors”
Sierra Ferrell’s reverence for Dolly Parton is evident in her cover of “Coat of Many Colors.”
Recorded and released as an Amazon Original to celebrate Parton’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it finds Ferrell leaning heavily toward the Parton side of her voice, while still sounding like herself.
The arrangement, too, hews closely to Parton’s original without resorting to mere copying. And when her bandmates’ voices join Ferrell on the chorus, the result is sublime.
Just in case Ferrell’s awe isn’t obvious in the track, she issued a statement in which she called Parton “so generous and kind” and marveled at her concern for others.
“I’ve admired pretty much everything about Dolly Parton since the first time I heard that one-of-a-kind voice,” Ferrell said. “From her work ethic, to how she balances her personal and professional life, to how she’s helped pave the way for women in music; she inspires on so many levels.”
The way things are going, some young singer is likely to say similar things about Ferrell sometime in the future.
Grade card: Sierra Ferrell - “Coat of Many Colors” - A
