Okay! Iām actually really looking forward to this little series!
AzenZone has been my go-to channel for getting acquainted with the Precure franchise without having to watch the 900-something combined episodes from every series. Dudeās close to my age, so weāve grown up on a lot of the same shows and whatnot, so I get a lot of his obscure references. Iām probably one of the few who totally got it the few times he referenced Urusei Yatsura in his reviews. :P
Heās also mentioned Ojamajo Doremi a few times in the past (even bringing up how nearly two decades prior, it did a better job at tackling racism than last yearās Precure series), and unlike Precure, I actually have a lot of nostalgia and deep love for the series.Ā āGrowing up with itā is a stretch since I was already a high school junior by the time I discovered it, but it was undoubtedly the true successor to Sailor Moon as far as my youth and maho-shoujo anime are concerned.
Because yeah, last week my eyes nearly jumped out of my head when I saw this very blatant cameo on Healinā Good Precure. Thatās one of the only times itās ever actually happened, which feels odd, considering Precure is pretty much the successor to Ojamajo Doremi in several ways.Ā
Unfortunately, as stated in the video, Ojamajo Doremiās always had a bit of a niche fandom outside of Japan. 4Kids getting their hands on the first season reeeeeally didnāt help matters, either. But itās one of those series where I (along with @47nessā) went out of my way to find as many episodes and merchandise I could get my hands on - because it was quite a few years after Ojamajo Doremi ended before anyone started to regularly sub it. I still have a good number of raw episodes on my external hard drives (and VHS tapes).Ā
So I always felt a little bitter at the unfairness of Ojamajo Doremi staying in relative obscurity while Precure ended up having a much more notable following. Still relatively niche (even down to the dubs - like, Futari wa, Smile, and DokiDokiĀ got some unfortunate localized treatment... just under Sabanās hand rather than 4Kids for the latter two), but much more prominent than Doremiās fandom ever was. Guess some of that can be owed to the Precure franchise being much more action-oriented but, ehhh.Ā
Still, I couldnāt help but beam with pride when I came to learn that Heartcatch Precure, which had a LOT of staff who previously did work for Doremi (most notably the character designs), is almost universally regarded as the overall best Precure series (or at the very least, in the top 2 or 3) - like, it says a lot that according to a recent popularity poll, Heartcatch is one of the few series where every main cast member placed within the Top 25 - and Erika, pictured above, made it to #3, right behind the OG team of Nagisa/Honoka who never werenāt going to be on the top.
Still, thereās always been a unique kind of charm to Doremi that, as far as I know, you donāt really see in Precure and probably the majority of other magical girl series. It had a continuous, ongoing story for its four seasons (plus an OVA that expanded on and added some lovely details), time actually passedĀ - i.e. characters actually got olderĀ with each succeeding series (starting at age 8, ending at age 11), and this series so often made the most of this.Ā
Most impressively for me was the consistent and relevantĀ side-cast. The classmates of the main characters werenāt just background fodder or one-note plot devices - several of them had multifaceted personalities, ties to the main girls, and character arcsĀ of their own! And this shit carried over from season to season - whatever gimmick they had would stay consistent, while at the same time they usually avoided having said character relearn the same lessons over and over again.Ā
So rarely does any show so admirably pull off a setting where almost everybodyĀ feels important to some degree. The FLAT4 - basically Rowdyruff Boy expys from the second season, easily could have never shown up again, but they made a resurgence in the final season. Characters carrying over across the seasons often feel like theyāre in a different place than they were when they debuted, and considering how often shows struggle just to pull that off with their main characters, itās doubly amazing that Ojamajo Doremi pulled this off with far more than just their core cast.Ā
It also had a very well-executed, well-paced endgame. Dokkaan! - the final season - concluded with every character going down their own path to forge their future. Their final arc wasnāt just some episodic affair that could have taken place anywhere else on the timeline. As their elementary school days come to a close and middle school is on the horizon, Doremi and her friends wonāt be tackling that new chapter of their lives together. The series finale is a heartbreaking affair and one I could relate to all too well, as Doremi is forced to come to terms with the fact that all of her friends (even the long-tenured Hazuki) will be far, far away from her in this new chapter of their lives.Ā
While she put on a brave face for her friends and encouraged them when she first found out that, one-by-one, they were leavingĀ her, Doremi eventually has a nervous breakdown come graduation day and locks herself up at the store where she and her friends have spent so much time together over the series. She canāt bring herself to attend the graduation ceremony - the sorrow tears into Doremi deeply as she finally admits to herself and everyone else that she canāt standĀ all of this abrupt change thatās going to permanently change her life. Doremi canāt hold down her selfish impulses any longer and does whatever she can to cling to what will soon be her past; her childhood, as it were, as she transitions to becoming a teenager.Ā
This really hit home for me in particular since Iāve gone through similar struggles. A divorce forcibly ripped me away from my home of 14 years - the lovely house I lived in on a lake ridge, the friends I had grown up with, and an entire side of my family Iād rarely see again after spending so much of my life with them - all of that, I had to abandon. Iām not a social person to begin with - and this was about 8 years beforeĀ I even knew about my autism. It was a very rough adjustment period that to this day, I still donāt feel right calling my current residenceĀ āhomeā. Since I got a job, Iāve been able to live with this, but it was really meaningful to see a protagonist struggle to let the past go and accept her future circumstances. Doremi ultimately managed to pull through, but itās still a bittersweet ending no matter how you slice it.Ā
For a kids show, Ojamajo Doremi had quite a lot to it. Which is why I really wish it was better remembered and honored.
tl;dr: Iām super excited for this retrospective series.

The Twelfth Day of PCDMas
On the twelfth day of Christmas, Precure Daily gave to me...
Twelve final attacks!
(if you want to be reminded of how they go, each title is linked to a YouTube video)
12. Star Twinkle Imagination
I love how they team up with Fuwa for this. Through the power of their imaginations they upgrade their outfits and launch a giant crystal star at the enemy filled with embodiments of all the horoscope signs.
11. All For You!
Every single Precure lends their power, and even a bunch of side characters I thought weād never see again. Michiru and Kaoru! Cure Mofurun and Pekorin! Royal Candy! Empowered Julio! Wester, Soular, Otokichi, Regina, even Yui! And Bibury being her tsundere self. Also, Cure Echoās first ever original television appearance! (however brief) FUN FACT: they forgot Parfait in this shot where everyone flies past
10. Sweets Wonderful a la Mode
They build a giant cake around the baddie and then blow it up. Itās goofy and I love it.
9. Grand Printemps
They summon a giant castle, transform into these crazy elaborate dresses with magic floating bows the size of a person behind them, then fly into the air and divebomb the monster! Itās so over-the-top and glorious.
8. Innocent Purification
What do I even need to say? The song is an earworm. The fact that itās an attack almost seems secondary.
7. Royal Lovely Straight Flush
My favorite thing about this is that their super form is just angel wings. Every other show since Fresh gives them a complete outfit change for a final form, but Dokidoki says wings are good enough.
6. Royal Rainbow Burst
Three words: Beauty the Hedgehog. If you hadnāt made the connection before, Iām glad to be the one to permanently make that association in your mind. Anyway I love the outlandish designs of the Princess dresses and how they get a bunch of Pegasi AND a phoenix to fly through the enemy.
5. Suite Session Ensemble Crescendo Finale
Thatās a mouthful. I like that Crescendo Tone just keeps getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger.... this is truly a final attack to end all final attacks. Plus the Crescendo forms are neat.
4. Heartcatch Orchestra
The Super Silhouette forms are clearly Umakoshi (character designer/head animator) having too much fun, he loves pointy clothes and hair. And then their attack is to summon a giant woman to punch the villain into smithereens. Top tier.
3. Five Explosion
I love how this giant butterfly baton just beams the girls up like a UFO before they fly straight through the monsters. This was game-changing for Precure finishers.
2. Spiral Heart Splash Star
The combined final attack between Bloom, Egret, Michiru, and Kaoru that we always deserved is truly grand. The four girls and four fairies all combine their powers to defeat an ancient evil in a fight to end all fights. I couldnāt pick anything else.
1. Extreme Luminario Max
Yes, this tops the list because of how heartfelt it is. You think itās going to be Hikariās final stand as she has given herself up to restore the Queen, and all three girls are choking back tears as they unleash their final, most powerful Extreme Luminario with the strength of the Queen behind them. Even if Hikari was seen again less than 5 minutes after this, for a moment you truly thought she was gone, and what a way to go it would have been.
As well asā¦.
Eleven favorite foods! Ten Lords a-helping Nine dance endings! Eight maidens shielding Seven ships a-sailing Six themes a-slaying Five golden cures Four reformed villains Three best friends Two power duos And a whole bunch of Healinā Good news!
Yes, the list is in (reverse) chronological order because I had a hard enough time narrowing down the 40-odd group final attacks to a list of 12. SERIOUSLY THEREāS A LOT.
SO HERE ARE SOME HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Rainbow Storm (FWPC)
Rainbow Rose Explosion (Y5GG)
Lucky Clover Grand Finale (Fresh)
Shining Fortissimo (Heartcatch)
Music Rondo Super Quartet (Suite)
Lovely Force Arrow (Dokidoki)
All of the Maho Girlsā different duo attacks: Diamond Eternal, Ruby Passionale, Sapphire Smartish, and Topaz Esperanza
Extreme Rainbow (Maho Girls)
I know, I know, itās over a month past Christmas at this point. The twelve days turned into 35 days. The Christmas decorations are all packed away, the trees have been dropped off to be turned into mulch, and everyone moved on. I didnāt intend for this to take so long, and Iām sorry this is coming out so late. Iāll plan my 2020 Christmas special in advance (Iāve literally set notes for myself right after Thanksgiving lol). Basically what happened is that everything in my life decided to go wrong at once, and I got depressed. Not a day went by when I didnāt think about writing this up, but for one reason or another I couldnāt motivate myself to sit down and do the work until now. I had it in my head that it would be A LOT OF WORK so I put it off until I had time. Then when I finally got to it, it was easier than I thought, because I was overthinking it.
Thank you all for sticking with me for as long as you have, and thank you to my new followers that this sub-project has garnered. With this out of the way, proper Precure Daily reviews shall continue! After all, Yes 5 isnāt going to write about itself!

AOI: Thatās great~! You look cleaner now, huh?
YAMATO: (meows)
AOI: This is my happy healing time~
ARATA: The Trimming Prince is magnificently being healed while trimming [the animals], huh.
AOI: I really am~
AOI: Lately, Iāve been running around here and there so itās been a while since I could feel this fur and warmth.
AOI: (sighs dreamily) The fluffiness isā¦ healing me~
ARATA: Um, Aoi. Can I take a picture?
ARATA: Since weāre here, I wanna share the healing time with the fans, too.
AOI: Fine by me but, please make sure to take Yamatoās good side.
ARATA: Thatās what youāre worried about?
AOI: That partās important. Right, Yamato~?
YAMATO: (purrs)
AOI: Ah, so cute~!
ARATA: Aoi? Aoi-kun? Youāre becoming a bit creepy.
AOI: So mean~
AOI: But, itās fine. Thereās no one here. Let me be healed all I want today.
(Aoiās phone starts vibrating)
ARATA: Hm?
AOI: Huh?
ARATA: Aoi-kunās phone is ringing. Itās from Tsukishiro-san. Here. (Arata hands Aoi his phone)
AOI: Hm? From Tsukishiro-san? Why?
AOI: Hello, itās Aoi. Tsukishiro-san, what happened?
KANADE: (on the phone) Ah, Iām so glad you picked up.
KANADE: (on the phone) Aoi-kunā¦ Thereās been an incident.
AOI: Ehā¦?
<------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
[01:50]
Ā AOI: (in a panic) Please believe me, Tsukishiro-san!
AOI: Iām innocent!! Thatās the wrong person!!
KANADE: ā¦! O-ohā¦!
ARATA: Aoi, there, there. (Arata pats Aoiās back) Calm down, okay?
ARATA: Tsukishiro-sanās getting scared.
AOI: No, I meanā¦! Iāmā¦! ITāS NOT!! I canāt calm down--!! Iā¦! IāMā¦!
AOI: I didnāt go on a shopping district date!!
AOI: I DIDNāT!! I definitely didnāt!!
ARATA: Thatās what he said, Tsukishiro-san.
KANADE: A-ahā¦ Yesā¦
ARATA: We got a glimpse of a never before seen flustered Aoi so, I feel like it would be a bit of waste butā¦
ARATA: To put it simplyā¦ Can you tell us the details of this āSatsuki Aoiās Heart Throbbing (Star Mark) Late-night Shopping District Date!ā article? (1)
AOI: Arata!! Youāre totally enjoying this, arenāt you?!
ARATA: No, no, Aoi. The only choice is to be interested since weāre already here, ya know?
ARATA: Graviās Prince, Satsuki Aoi, went on a late-night shopping districtā¦ (Arata starts snickering) d-dateā¦!
ARATA: Ah, I donāt really care but, the words āshopping district dateā sounds a bit old, doesnāt it?
AOI: (Aoi starts hitting the table) I! Honest-to-goodness! Do! NOT! Care!
KANADE: There, there, Aoi-kun. Please calm down.
KANADE: Please donāt tease him, too, Arata-kun.
<------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
[03:13]
Ā KANADE: Here you go. (Kanade hands Aoi some tea) Have some warm tea to help yourself calm down.
AOI: Th-thank you very muchā¦
AOI: (sighs)
ARATA: So, this whole riot was started by some random personās tweet?
KANADE: Yes. A guy who looks like Aoi-kun was seen being friendly with two girls along the shopping district late at night.
KANADE: So, the real talk was about āIs it really him?ā
KANADE: There is a picture of the person in question and at a glance, it does look like Aoi-kun in a disguise.
ARATA: Heh~ Then, heās a hot guy?
KANADE: (laughs) Thatās true.
KANADE: Though, considering the lighting, the angle, and the cameraās quality, it might not really be him.
KANADE: In any case, there seems to be a lot of people who believe that itās not him, too.
KANADE: The opinions seem to be slightly scattered.
AOI: By āslightly,ā how many people are you talking aboutā¦?
KANADE: According to our confirmed information, itās about one million.
AOI: ā¦! Thatās reached quite a lot of people, huhā¦
ARATA: It might escalate from here on, too.
ARATA: It must be hard being popular, huh, Aoi-kun?
AOI: Iāll upload a picture of your weird bed hair later, Arataā¦!
ARATA: What kind of revenge is that?
KANADE: Itās okay, Aoi-kun.
KANADE: Just like I said a while ago, even the agency itself has looked into and confirmed that the person in the picture is not Aoi-kun himself.
KANADE: On the day the picture was uploaded, you were unmistakably together with me, Kakeru-kun, and Yoru-kun, werenāt you?
AOI: Y-yesā¦! After the interview, the four of us went out to eat with the staff. And Tsukishiro-san took us all the way back to the dorm.
AOI: You did, rightā¦?
KANADE: Yes.
ARATA: (disappointed) Oh, really?
AOI: A-ra-taā¦!
ARATA: Sorry, sorry~ I was joking.
KANADE: Of course, there is a possibility of you sneaking out of the dorm late at night butā¦
AOI: Tsukishiro-san!?
KANADE: (laughs) Iām so sorry, I was just joking as well.
KANADE: I know that Aoi-kunās not the type to do something like that. And I trust you.
KANADE: The dormās security cameras didnāt catch you outside the dorm either.
ARATA: Oh? You check the security cameras even though you believe him?
KANADE: Yes. You might think it a bit uncomfortable but, please do understand that itās a necessary step for us to be able to protect you.
KANADE: In the case that the situation blows up, they can generally be used to help prove our side.
AOI: If the situation blows upā¦?
KANADE: Ah, please donāt worry. It really is only a āwhat-ifā situation.
KANADE: The agency and I, as well as the fans, know that Aoi-kunās not that type of person. But, we canāt deny that there are people who would find it interesting to make a big deal out of this.
ARATA: So, we can assume that heās popular enough to cause a big topic out of a misunderstanding?
KANADE: Thatās right. I guess thatās a positive way of looking at it.
AOI: (sighs) Iām at a lossā¦
KANADE: It is part of a celebrityās job to be made rumors about or to be filmed [without their knowledge] butā¦ It must be difficult at times like this, isnāt it?
AOI: Yesā¦
<------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
[06:43]
Ā KANADE: Everyone in Gravi and Procella will be getting a brief announcement from Kurotsuki and I after this.
KANADE: That, even though we know the truth, it might still be a bit of an uproar.
AOI: Iām sorry for causing you so much troubleā¦
KANADE: Ah, no, no. This is my job after all.
KANADE: In the first place, itās not Aoi-kunās fault.
AOI: Maybe I should have talked about this with Hajime-san in personā¦
ARATA: Ah, that might be true.
KANADE: Ah, Iām so sorry. Even though Hajime-kun is your leader, after you talked to him on the phone, I still did explain it to him myself.
KANADE: I did meet him for a different matter today, too, so it just came up.
AOI: A-ah, by the wayā¦ Can I ask how he reactedā¦?
KANADE: Eh? Ahā¦ Hajime-kun was, umā¦
ARATA: Ah! Could it be that he was kinda angry? Like, he was feeling vulnerable?
AOI: Itās not me so thereās no reason for him to be angry, rightā¦?
AOI: Butā¦ It is true that there was an uproar because of my nameā¦
KANADE: Ah, please rest assured. He wasnāt angry at all.
KANADE: Rather, he wasā¦
AOI: He wasā¦?
KANADE: After seeing the headline on the website Arata-kun was looking at, heā¦
KANADE: He burst out laughingā¦
AOI: Hajime-san?!
ARATA: Hajime-sanās sense of humor is pretty shallow sometimes, huhā¦
ARATA: Isnāt that nice, Aoi?
AOI: I canāt tell if itās good or badā¦ I didnāt do anything but, I feel like Iām getting more and more embarrassed nowā¦
AOI: (sighs)
ARATA: But, Aoi-kunās luck is pretty bad, huh? Just when you thought youāre just going home from work, someone who looks like you causes a huge scandal.
AOI: Thatās trueā¦ I want someone to take care of meā¦
AOI: I wanna go back to the dorms right now and have all the animals surround me so I can scream while being surrounded by all that fluffā¦!
AOI: ALL THAT FLUFF!!!
ARATA: Just their fur, okay?
ARATA: But, manā¦ This guy here really looks exactly like AoāHm?!
KANADE: Hm?
ARATA: He really does look like you, you know? A spitting image of Aoi.
ARATA: Speaking of someone who looks like Aoiā¦
AOI: Arata, can you show it to me on a bigger screen?
AOI: I avoided looking at the picture after all soā¦
ARATA: Waitā¦ Look, itās this. (Arata shows Aoi the picture) This profile view isā¦
ARATA/AOI: CHI-CHAN?!

Bonus - How Kira Kira Precure Ala Mode is the result of Tri
I would be lying if I said this wasnāt my first attempt at trying to put the thoughts into my head down onto paper. I usually donāt get too far - either it never quite sounding right or some other, more important project coming up.
At this point, youāve probably noticed the title. Itās not quite a direct shot - some sort of string of dots that connect Tri directly. More of, itās a path that requires understanding some things and then getting back to the question.
#1: Digimon and Pretty Cure share stuff. A lot of stuff.
On paper, Digimon and Pretty Cure seem like two radically different shows with two radically different fanbases. One is a sci-fi fantasy romp with an ever-increasing focus on fusion methods. The other is about girls in pretty dresses of varying length
But in practice, they actually have lots of things in common. For example, The producer of a majority of Digimon seasons (no really) - Seki Horomi was also the planner for both Heartcatch and Suite Precure.
On the flip side, we have Gou Koga. Serving as the Storyboarder and Episode Director for a couple of episodes of DokiDoki Precure on top of being itās director. The last position ātheyā (I couldnāt find a picture of them) brought to Digimon Universe: Applimonsters. Along with a whole bunch of other Precure VAās.
Thatās staff. Even in a company like Toei, thereās going to be some overlap. So letās talk about the opening moments of Heartcatch Precure.
We have a girl sleeping. In her dreams, sheās treated to a girl getting her ass kicked by another girl while a bunch of small creatures try their best to get away from the carnage. Then the dream ends.
Now compare that to the opening moments of Digimon Xros Wars.
Here, a boy is sleeping. In his dream, heās leading an army against some other army. Before he can give any orders, the dream ends.
Sure, those seem like two different dreams. But the broad strokes are the same - Our main character has a dream thatās actually a vision of something important.
That has to be a coincidence, right? Letās look at the villains then. For Heartcatch, we have a woman who belittles people, a man already ready for battle and a composed person. They even have an evil girl with a guy.
Okay. Letās go over the villains of Xros Wars.
We have a woman who belittles people, a man ready for battle and a composed. Which is on top of a girl and her brother.
Man, aināt that coincidence. Now, wouldnāt it be funny if our mainĀ āprotagonistsā magical devices colors were A shade of Red, Blue, Yellow and Violet . Oh wait...
#2: Triās Development Time vs Triās Profits
The phraseĀ ādevelopment hellā comes to mind when talking about Tri. Just going from the announcement to the release of just the first movie - Reunion, we have a 15 month wait.Ā For an animated feature made by a company as big as Toei, thatās an eternity. Compare this to the Precure movie offerings, which come out in two varieties each year - an All-Star/Miracle movie in the spring (In which that seasonās characters team up with a bunch of cures, with later movies reducing it down to just the previous two seasons teams) and a āsoloāĀ movie in the fall (just that seasonās team).
Looping back around to Reunion, the two Precure movies for that year wereĀ Pretty Cure All Stars: Haru no CarnivalāŖ andĀ Eiga Go! Princess Precure Go! Go!! GÅka 3-bon Date!!!. Yes, thatās the real title.Ā
After a bit of digging, we haveĀ 130,363,100 Yen (or around 1,168,285.16 Dollars at the exchange rate when this article) for Pretty Cure All Stars: Haru no CarnivalāŖ ās opening day andĀ 129,383,300 Yen (around 1,159,504.41 Dollars)
So how does that stack up to Reunion? Opening weekend, we have a profit of 59,000,000 Yen (528,744.90 Dollars). By that account, Just on that alone, it would seem that this would mean that Reunion did worse than both Precure movies. Thereās just one thing. Reunion had an absurd time in theaters - getting extended all the way into January of 2016 and racking into 230,000,000 Yen (2,061,208.94 Dollars).
But that isnāt the whole story. Thereās one, almost contradictory point to talk about.
#3: The Pretty Cure Franchise wasnāt doingĀ āgoodā, but not great.
You probably read that sub-heading and probably thought...Ā āhow? Didnāt you just say that both Pretty Cure movies of that year made a million (American) dollar in ticket sales?ā
Yes, but movie sales arenāt the metric that Precure is usually judged by. No, that would be toy sales.
For context, each season is listed in chronological order from left to right, with 1Ā āpointā on that bar equals a 100 Million Yen and each ābarā corresponding to a season.
Looking at the numbers presented, we have 6.31. Multiply that by 100 Million yen then do the conversion rate from Yen to Dollars...You getĀ 5,654,881.92 Dollars. Donāt get me wrong. That isnāt bad by any stretch of the imagination. But to have a decrease of nearly 25%, thatās cause for concern.
Toei thought the same as well, choosing to drop the number of cures for the next season to just two (eventually three) and let Mitsuka Masato direct (the director of the upcoming Digimon Adventure: ).
Yeah. If anything, you got to appreciate the consistency on display here. Even if the .0037007874% is not something for celebration. Something drastic needed to occur.
So while Applimonsters got ready to launch itās inaugural episode of what was hoped to be a brand newĀ āspin-offā of the digimon brand and keep the momentum created by Tri going, it was decided that to take what was an extreme gamble. If you canāt quite beat them, join them.
Probably helped that they had someone knowledgable on the Digimon anime franchise.
Thatās Yukio Kaizawa by the way. You know, the director behind Tamers, Frontier and Hunters on top of working on Xros Wars as an Episode Director. Which is on top of storyboarding a couple of episodes.
I think thatās answer the question, now does it?
