Walnut Canyon

Arizona is rich with ancient artifacts of prehistoric cultures.  We have visited numerous cave dwellings, seen scores of pictographs and petroglyphs, and have had a glimpse into how ancient civilizations lived.  The hike into Walnut Canyon, near Flagstaff was an incredible journey.  This is one of our National Monuments that is overlooked by many who are set on seeing the Grand Canyon just an hour to the north.  But our unhurried lifestyle that has kept us in Arizona for so long, has afforded us to see amazing sights that many never see and do.  

As we descended down hundreds of stairs and winding switch-backs, we were astonished with the beauty of this magnificent canyon.  We wound through biospheres of cool lush green pines into sun baked regions with flowering displays of cactus and succulents. We curved through canyon walls on paths where former ancient inhabitants made their homes in the cliffs and over-hangs.  We could imagine the children playing and the men and women who inhabited this place between 600 and 1400 AD.  Along the trails we entered pueblos of the ancient Sinagua and walked in the steps of those who came before.
