The bright lights of the studio beat down with a harsh, sterile intensity. It was the kind of artificial brightness that made every flaw visible, every tense glance impossible to miss. The photographer called for adjustments to the set, the stylists hovered nearby, and the air conditioner hummed in the background―a soothing contrast to the palpable tension that dominated the room.

Jude Bellingham stood tall at one side, his body language exuding ease and confidence, though his eyes burned with an intensity that had nothing to do with the camera. He was dressed in head-to-toe Adidas gear, a sleeck black tracksuit that clung to his athletic frame, his hands casually in his pockets. His dark eyes, however, were fixed on the woman standing a few feet away―her.

His ex.

She´d tried so hard to appear unaffected when she walked in, her expression carefully schooled into professionalism. Dressed in a matching Adidas apparel, her perfectly combed hair that framed her lightly made up face minutes before, she looked the picture of calm. But the way her fingers tightened around the water bottle in her hand betrayed her. Jude had always known how to read her.

He forced himself to stop looking at her. Her hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, the Adidas outfit hugging her in all the right places, accentuating her figure in ways that Jude was painfully aware of. His jaw clenched.

It had been months since they last saw each other. Months since the vicious breakup that left them both battered emotionally. The fallout had been public and brutal―spilled out into the tabloids, whispered about in interviews. Yet, here they were, forced to endure each other´s presence for the sake of their contract with Adidas. The irony wasn´t lost on any of them. They had signed for the brand long before their messy split. Neither of them had been smart enough to consider the long-term consequences. Now, they were stuck together, fake smiles plastered across their faces for the cameras and a product niether of them gave a damn about.

They used to be a power couple, that´s why they were hired in the first place. Now they were just exes with unfinished business and buried resentment that resurfaced when they looked at each other for more than three seconds.

"Perfect, now, Jude can you step a little closer to her? We need chemistry to really come through in these shots," the photographer called out, adjusting his lens.

Chemistry. The word lingered in the air like smoke. Jude´s lips twitched into something that could´ve been a smirk if it wasn´t so bitter. Chemistry. Right. There was plenty of that, but not the kind Adidas was hoping for.

He stepped closer, catching a whiff of her perfume―the same one she used to wear when they were together. The same one he had gifted her once. It was ridiculous how something so small could throw him off balance. She glanced up, her eyes catching his for a split second before she looked away. But it was enough. Tension crackled between them, so sharp and undeniable that they both wondered how everyone in the room wasn't as overwhelmed as they were.

"Closer please," the photographer asked again.

This time, she swallowed hard and obeyed moving toward him. Jude stood there, hands in his pockets, still, his gaze intense, his presence infuriatingly cool. It took everything in her not to react to him.

Not to flinch when his scent, familiar and exasperatingly intoxicating, hit her. That same cologne that she used to love.

Professionalism. That was the only thing keeping her from walking out of this room.

"Close enough for you?" Jude asked, with his voice low, just for her to hear, laced with a mocking smile. She avoided rolling her eyes. That was his way of dealing with things, she knew it well. Acting as if nothing had happened, even upsetting her, when in reality, his anger was eating away at him.

"Perfect," the photographer chimed in, unaware of the undercurrent swirling between the two. "Now, you should put your arm around her, and you should lean into him a bit. Make it look natural, like you´re both having a good time."

She almost laughed at the absurdity of it. Good time? There was no such thing between them anymore. She tensed as Jude´s arm snaked around her waist, his fingers grazing her side. For a moment, they felt natural, as if his hand belonged there. The touch sent sparks flying across her skin―both the kind that burned an the kind that made her stomach twist in an old, familiar way.

He leaned closer when the photographer looked at the pictures, lips brushing her ear. "This used to be easy."

She didn’t even deign to look at him, a faint smile playing on her lips as the camera clicked. “Don’t talk to me,” she said, her voice dripping with impatience. “I just want this to be over as soon as possible. I have things to do.”

"Hmm." Jude gave a nonchalant shrug, his voice dripping with false understanding. "Got it. Wouldn’t want to keep that benchwarmer of a boyfriend of yours waiting too long, right?" He turned his gaze back to the camera, clearly unfazed by her possible reaction. "I thought it would take you a little bit more to move on..."

Her pulse quickened, heat rising to her cheeks. She knew exactly what he was referring to. The rumors. The whispers about her and another footballer of the Premier League. She hadn´t confirmed any of those rumors—not because they were true, which weren´t, but because she didn´t owe anyone an explanation. Least of all him.

She changed her posture slowly, and finally met his eyes. "You´re one to talk about moving on, Jude," she said, her voice icy as she could manage. "How many instagram models have you cycled through in the last six months?"

A flicker of something dark passed through Jude´s eyes, but it was gone just as quickly, replaced by that infuriating smirk. "Oh, we´re going there?."

"You started it," she said calmly, barely maintaining her pose as the photographer circled them, blissfully unaware of their venomous exchange. "You just can´t stand the thought of me moving on, can you? But the again, you never could handle competition."

He chuckled, a laugh that felt forced but also genuine. "It´s not competition if the guy is not even good enough to get on the pitch, love." The nickname sent shivers down both of them, and Jude felt his heart pounding. He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret. "But honestly? It’s just sad to watch you settle for less."

Her eyes flashed dangerously, and for a moment, Jude thought she might slap him. But instead, she took a slow, deliberate breath and stepped back, breaking the proximity between them.

“Screw you,” she snapped, her voice laced with frustration. “You´ve spent the last months parading around every influencer who bats her eyelashes at you. Don´t talk about my personal life," she let slip, even though her initial intention was to shut her mouth.

His jaw tightened, while his grip on her waist firmed. It wasn’t painful, but his hands made their presence known. She saw the flash of anger in his eyes. Good. Let him feel it.

The camera clicked again, capturing the tension that was almost palpable between them. The photographer murmured something about "great intensity" in their poses, but they barely heard him. He went to clean the lenses or something like that, again, they didn´t care.

The moment he left, they remained frozen in their poses, face to face, almost touching. The height difference between them became increasingly evident, adding a subtle weight to the tension in the air. He could almost smell the fresh mint on her breath, a crisp, invigorating scent that awakened his senses and made him acutely aware of their closeness.

"You think I moved on just to spite you? Grow up, Jude."

Their faces were inches apart, the fire in her eyes reflecting his own. "Then why him?" He didn’t even care who the guy was; he would have felt the same way whether it was some athlete or just a random man.

She didn´t flinch, her gaze holding his with a steely resolve. "Because he is not you."

The word hung in the air between them, heavy and loaded. Jude´s heart pounded in his chest, and for a split second, all the anger, all the bitterness, melted away, leaving only the raw, painful truth of it all.

He still wanted her. He still missed her. And he hated himself for it.

"Alright, everyone, sorry for the interruption—looks like the lens was a bit dirty! Let’s get back to it and capture some more friendly shots. Jude, why don’t you hug her from behind like you’re playing?"

They both appreciated the photographer's interruption and took a moment to reposition themselves with a bit of caution. As she closed her eyes, she felt the warmth of his arms resting on her shoulders and the closeness of their waists. Holy mother of God.

Jude´s breath was hot against her skin, and it took everything in her not to react, not to crumble under the weight of it. Because as much as she hated to admit it, he wasn´t wrong. She did miss him. The way he made her feel alive and on fire, even if it was chaotic and messy and sometimes unberable. She hadn´t felt anything close to that since him. And it scared her.

"You still flinch when I touch you," he smirked, now his thumb brushing over her hip just slightly. “And you miss me…”

"I don´t flinch, Jude. I recoil," she lied, smiling a little bit genuine. “And you wish.”

Jude leaned in, his perfect grin prepared for the camera but meant only for her eyes. With a playful glint, he whispered, "Liar." The word hung between them, teasing and electric, making her heart race.

She bit her lip, refusing to give him the satisfaction of knowing he was right. But the way her heart pounded, the way her body still reacted to his touch—she hated it.

The final shots were even more intimate—his arm around her waist, her hand on his chest, their faces inches apart. Every touch felt like it was setting her on fire, but she wouldn’t let him win. She wouldn’t let him see how much he still affected her.

As they wrapped up, the photographer thanked them both, oblivious to the war that had been raging between them. The moment the cameras stopped, she stepped away from him, desperate for space, for air.

But Jude wasn’t done.

“Guess I’ll be seeing you around then,” he said, his voice casual, but there was an undercurrent of something more—something unresolved.

She crossed her arms over her chest, trying to hold herself together and half-joked. “God I hope not.”

Jude hesitated, his usual cocky demeanor slipping for just a moment. “For what it’s worth… I didn’t mean for things to end like they did.”

She glanced at him, surprised by the sincerity in his tone. But before she could respond, the mask was back—the teasing smirk, the cocky swagger.

“And for the record,” he added, his voice low as he passed by her, “you do miss me.”

She rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t deny the truth that lingered between them. Despite everything—the anger, the bitterness, the pain—she did miss him.

He did too.

As she watched him walk away, a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips, despite herself. They might have been a mess, but somewhere beneath all the fire and fury, there was still something there.

Something neither of them could quite let go.

“Hey Bob, you alright?” You ask him, watching as he waves you off and continues to stumble until he finally makes it to the restroom. “I wonder what’s gotten into him.” You murmur to Hangman who was still looking in the direction Bob went.

Hangman turned back to you, giving you one of his know it all looks and his million dollar smile that you hated before saying, “He’s just trying to work up the courage to ask you out, y/n.” You stood there stunned, as Hangman chuckled and walked away. Maybe all the hints you’d dropped finally would pay off tonight.

Half an hour later, you noticed Bob still wasn’t back from the restroom so you flagged down Penny and went on your break to check on Bob. Knocking on the men’s bathroom door, no sound came from the other side, so you turn the knob and it was luckily unlocked.

“Bob?”

He was sitting on the floor leaning against a stall nearly passed out. When shaking him, he looks up at you and reaches up to tuck your hair behind your ear. “I’ve been wanting to do that,” the tip of his ears turn pink at the admission as you help him up to his feet. “Why didn’t you?”

Today we will take a closer look on Ash and Iris' relationship in the Anipoke series (BW through JN) and see what kind of bond they share.

Most/ many people in this fandom collectively agree that Ash and Iris' relationship is terrible, ranging from A. Iris is an awful friend to Ash B. They have no chemistry C. Iris is Ash's least favorite friend D. They argue too much E. Iris was only in the anime to put Ash down

As you can see, we have quite the the list to go through. So let's just dive right in

A. Iris is an awful friend to Ash

Iris is accused for many things, mostly for being a bully, an awful friend or putting him down because of her "kid" catchphrase.

I will come back to Iris' catchphrase later in the analysis. Let's start with their relationship. Does her catchphrase actually sour their bond?

Ash and Iris have a playful, competitive and fun dynamic. They are often seen running around while (the more responsible) Cilan cooks and/ or look after them. When one is in trouble, the other never hesitate to jump in to defend or help their friend. While Iris can be blunt sometimes, she has her priorities straight and values Ash as her friend a lot.

Heck, they went on a date together in Nimbasa City, where Ash didn't hesitate to turn down an offer to battle the subway masters just to keep his promise to Iris. Would he drop this offer if he didn't enjoy Iris' company? No way.

The soft look on Iris' face above is present a lot through the series whenever Ash does something heroic/ bonds with his pokemon. Ash does crazy stunts for other pokemon's sake. That's his thing. I dare you to pay close attention to Iris' face anytime this happens.

Look at her worried expressions. Her trying to run after him, but getting stopped by other characters. Iris didn't hesitate to balance on the Sandiles in BW003 to save Ash from the scalding hot water, or jump after him during one of the N-episodes. Just before the Unova league started, Iris woke up during the middle of the night to advise Ash to go get some sleep so he could be all ready for his match the next day.

I wonder how Ash's BW journey would be if Iris didn't look after him as much as she did.

Anytime he is in trouble, she is there to yank him back to security. She doesn't have to, but she does anyway. Always. With no hesitation or concern for her own safety. Because that's how Iris is. She puts pokemon' and friends' needs before her own needs.

During Scraggy's debut episode, Iris didn't hesitate to stay up the entire night to help Ash out. She even left the camp and into the woods with Axew to find medicine/ remedy for Scraggy. If she was an aWfUl FrIeNd she'd snuggle right back in her sleeping bag and sleep.

Ash is quite mature about his rivals in BW. He doesn't let them get under his skin like he previously used to do, and instead tried a more cheery approach.

Iris gets really agitated on his behalf. While Ash accept Trip's arrogance, Iris scolds him. How dare he put her friend down in front of her??? Whenever Trip tries to put Ash down, Iris calls him out, and Trip ends up battling Ash anyways.

When the BW gang meets up with Tepig's (horrible) ex-trainer, Iris is especially angry, while Cilan tries to calm her down. Iris has a strong sense of justice, and doesn't accept anyone to put Ash down (or any of her pokemon and friends, really)

Iris is always super happy and cheers loudly for Ash whenever he battles. It doesn't matter if he can't hear her, she gives it her all!

Funny thing she has trouble praising him in person, but behind the scenes? She's his devoted cheerleader. Even if Ash challenges an ice-type gym, she puts on warm clothing and faces her fears. No way she's going to let her fear get in the way. Again, no hesitation to support her friend no matter the circumstances.

B. They have no chemistry

As I mentioned above, Iris has trouble being herself completely. She's childish, excitable, energetic and fun-loving. But due to her getting rejected because of her personality when she went to school, and almost exclusively playing with pokemon when she still lived in the Village of Dragons, she has trouble with opening up to other humans.

She takes a quick liking to Ash when they first meet. She shifts between criticizing him and playing around with him. Iris can't help but get close to him/ follow him/ bump into him while blushing because she doesn't know how to approach other people her age.

It's very obvious she enjoys his (and Pika's) company, but her terrible social competence is hindering her. She doesn't fully open to Ash and Cilan until later in the series.

During Ash' battle with Cilan, she immediately goes to Ash's side to cheer him on. Notice how she only praises him and looks at him with interest whenever Ash is unaware. Whenever Ash directly addresses her, she does a complete turn and instead criticizes him.

Cilan compliments their chemistry and says "you two produce quite the lovely flavour" Keep in mind, this is said by the connoisseur, who is an expert on analyzing people and pokemon's bond.

What triggers Iris is Cilan's line: "Aren't you two travelling together?"

"We are not together!" Iris exclaims before rushing off, but not before saying : "Great battle, Ash"

Ash is left confused, while Cilan smiles knowingly. He knows what's going on.

Iris rejects Ash before he can reject her, not knowing Ash would never do such a thing. Iris had such a bad time with her peers rejecting her first, and the trauma sits deeply in her. She knows Ash took a huge risks with the gym battle, and won. It was an impressive and fun battle. She admits so.

She's interested in Ash and follows him because she enjoys his company. But, still, she fears rejection, which is why she acts like she does. I'm not saying this is an excuse, I'm pointing out why Iris acts like she does. It's part of her character development.

Later on, their relationship mellows out and they manage to form a fun and wholesome bond! For Ash and Iris, adventure and pokemon are everything. They share the same interests, goals and values. They are quite alike without them being carbon copies of one another.

With one look, they know what the other is thinking, as seen in BW. They are excitable 10 year olds with the entire future before them.

Ash and Pikachu were very excited to meet up with Iris when she invited them to Opelucid City to have a battle. Ash didn't hesitate to run straight to the gym, frantically look for her and finally yell her name excitedly when he ran into the gym. Just rewatch this episode and see his excitement. Ash is a puppy for Iris and values her friendship a whole lot.

During their date they watched a football game, played tennis, watched a musical, ate ice cream and were about to get in the ferris wheel - before the missing Axew subplot came into the picture.

Seeing Ash completely relax and have a whole lot of fun with a companion was a nice break from his pokemon-crazy side. Would they manage to have such a great time with lacking chemistry? Again, no.

Ash is shown to, again and again, always have faith in Iris, no matter what. Whenever Cilan or another characters doubt or criticize Iris, Ash claims he trusts Iris and follows along her plan. He also rejected a pokeball from Officer Jenny in BW2 when Dragonite was causing a fuss at the power station. He confidently told the officer how he knew Iris could calm the Dragonite down without any help.

Despite the officers threatening to intervene throughout the episode, Ash stood his ground, and stood up for Iris, with no hesitation.

Ash struggled a lot against his gym battle against Roxie. She had her huge and loud fanbase, and she had managed to poison Pikachu.

Iris found drums (from ... uh, I really have no idea) and drummed along during Ash's battle to keep his spirits up. Even Cilan was confused about where the drums came from, which was a funny touch to the tense atmosphere in this episode.

When Ash was about to give up, Iris yells out his name through all the noise. Ash hears her, and sees that she has gone so far as to paint her face, put on a costume and continue to drum loudly for him. And, the best part, she made Cilan do the same! Ash was not going to lose on her watch.

Later on, Ash comments on all the painting and costumes, in which Iris blushes and laughs. Ash appreciates how far she went to keep up his spirit, but she didn't really have to dress up and play instruments, but she did anyways!

If any of Ash's other female characters did this, this moment would be hyped. Just saying.

Iris is really bummed to hear Ash is going back to Kanto. She quickly declares she wants to join Ash back to Kanto, and asks him if she can come along. When Ash says she can, Iris cheers loudly. She isn't ready to say goodbye to her first friend outside the Dragon Village just yet

Look at how happy she is!!!

Both Ash and Iris are reckless. They are shown to jump off towers and hang on clock towers to save pokemon respectively, but still, neither will hesitate to look after the other. For two active trainers who gets into all sorts of trouble, it's nice to have a companion who is just as wild as you, and would have your back no matter what, and no hesitation. Their support for one another is impeccable.

Ash knows how hard it is to lose an important battle after you gave it your all, and he doesn't hesitate to come see Iris before and after her battle. Because of course he does. He and Pikachu leaves the the stands with no words. He feels Iris' pain.

For the first time Iris lets her guard down and cries in front of Ash. She always held in her feelings during BW, covering up her vulnerable sides with her "kid" line, but here, she lets all her sadness and frustration out. This shows another step in their relationship, where they can be themselves completely around each other, no matter what.

They will always be there for each other. Always.

To end this part on a lighter note, look at them being silly together. This is another part of their chemistry, aside from their love for pokemon, battling, playing around and discovering the world together. Ash and Iris are almost always on the same wavelenght.

C. Iris is Ash's least favorite friend

H .... How do you know that??

Ok, let's discover this claim through Ash's pokemon:

The unaired Team Plasma VS Team Rocket special script was leaked a while ago. In the script, we're shown Iris and Pikachu bonding while Ash is elsewhere. Iris keeps up with Pikachu when he runs away, keeping him safe and protecting him against dangers.

It's a shame this episode never aired, and we couldn't see the close bond and trust between Pikachu and Iris in action. Though you can see Iris' body language on the shot in the preview above. Look at how protective she is of Pika, and how he clings close to her.

If Ash didn't like Iris, Pikachu would be SURE to notice it and run away from her asap.

When Ash opened to letter from Iris, Pikachu sniffed the envelope and noticed Iris' scent. He happily leaped from Ash's shoulder with sparkly eyes. He couldn't wait to meet Iris again!

The second Iris stood before Ash and Pikachu, Pikachu left Ash's side and jumped on Iris to snuggle her. It's a nice contrast to BW002 when Iris cuddled Pikachu without knowing him, and he thunderbolted her. Pikachu has his absolute favorite people, and Iris is among them. Pikachu's actions says it all.

Later, Pikachu greets Emolga, and their cheeks rub together, forming a heart. This is a cute detail. The heart didn't have to be there, but it was. It was a delightful reunion.

Later on, when Iris and Ash has their childish Kid-argument, Pikachu (and Emolga) are shown to not be impressed.

Ash's Dragonite is super affectionate and hugs everyone, Iris is no exception. But this time Dragonite takes a very quick and strong liking to Iris (despite meeting her for the first time), forming a heart with her feeler on top of her head - showing the heart-symbolism twice.

If Iris really was Ash's least favorite companion, it would definitively be shown through his pokemon.

D. They argue too much

Quarreling is part of Iris and Ash's relationship, but it's exaggerated and overblown by the fandom. They argue just as much/ have petty arguments like Ash did with the previous female leads.

Ash and Iris are both competitive by nature, challenging each other all the time, but it's all good natured. They don't hesitate to call their challenges off when one of them is in trouble. I mean, they are kids, so they fight and make up all the time.

... sometimes they get so lost in their games that they forget their other companion. Poor Cilan, your effort is very much appreciated!

(Honestly, I admire Cilan's patience. He is truly a top tier companion!)

E. Iris was only in the anime to put Ash down

Really? So why did ...

... Iris entrust Ash to talk to Bianca's father when he wanted her to quit her journey? She could've asked Cilan who is much better with words and the art of convincing ... But she chooses Ash, because she has faith in him.

Iris' catchphrase is ironic. She's just as much of a "kid" as Ash is, as the narrative shows us again and again, or Cilan pointing it out. On the example above, after Iris called Ash a kid, she was super excited herself and ran after him in the same manner.

The "kid"-comments would be much worse if it wasn't ironic. Iris even admits it through the series when she gets caught (mostly by Cilan, but sometimes by Ash as well).

Plus, mostly it's used to tease him. Y'know, teasing, like friends often do to each other. She isn't insulting him. I promise.

Another example of Iris praising Ash when he isn't around to hear it. Whenever other people doubt him, she chides in and compliments him/ his pokemon/ battle style.

And if Iris only put Ash down in the anime, he wouldn't be so excited to meet up with her again. Have a screenshot of Ash and Pikachu just staring at her in awe when Iris appears.

I find this part a bit funny. Ash yells and blushes when Drayden tells him Iris is the champion now, while Pikachu isn't surprised. Instead, Pikachu seems surprised/ bothering by Ash yelling pfftttt ... It's like Iris' champion title doesn't surprise the electric rodent.

And if Iris truly put Ash down, she wouldn't encourage Ash's Dragonite in the middle of their battle. Iris is a sweetheart and cares for all pokemon. No way she wants to finish a battle with Ash when his pokemon is having trouble, even if it can cost her the victory.

Conclusion:

Ash and Iris share a wholesome and adorable bond.

appreciation post for the little mermaid (2023) 🧜‍♀️🐠🌊

i can still remember the massive global hype for the live-action little mermaid because it was one of the very few live-action remakes that had the potential to be something great.

in may 2023, all eyes, i mean ALL EYES were on halle bailey. she was the most perfect person to portray ariel. her operatic, otherworldly singing voice, her adorable charm, her youthful spirit, but also her feistiness and passion. she carried the right mix of sweetness and fierceness to play ariel. i'm so happy this movie gave her a massive boost in popularity, and people got to appreciate her wonderful voice and her spirit. i hope she gets to show the movie to her son when he's older!

when she first got casted, im not sure if i remember how i felt but i had this feeling of surprise, i was like "YESSS FINALLY HALLE BAILEY IS GONNA DOMINATE THE WORLD!!!". i've always known chloe x halle since 2016, so i was going to be ride-or-die for this movie, and for halle. taking on such an iconic 35-year-old character carried a huge responsibility, and i'm so relieved the disney fandom embraced her with open arms.

the first time i saw the movie in a theater, i was in awe of rob marshall's directing and the melodious amalgam of alan menken and lin manuel miranda's combined sounds. it was the very first time they've collaborated for anything! (and yes i'm still mad that triton's new song got cut from the movie).

now, the "part of your world" scene. holy god. where do i even start with this? this was FUCKING INCREDIBLE. it's a song that everyone can relate to in so many ways. when i first saw the scene during d23 expo night in 2022, i was completely floored. halle bailey perfectly balanced all these emotions of joy, curiosity, passion, anger, frustration and discomfort, wanting for things to change, desperate to leave her world behind. it was a passionate plea, a desperate cry for help. she was shouting it out into the universe, everything she wanted for her life and her future, and everything that made ariel as a character. one of the top tier movie scenes of 2023 for me.

im so happy disney casted another unknown actor in jonah hauer-king, his solo song "wild uncharted waters" was everything! the chemistry between jonah and ariel was just so charming and i cried big time, i almost wanted to jump out of my seat when they kissed. OH AND THAT SCENE WHERE ARIEL GOT ERIC TO PRONOUNCE HER NAME WAS JUST UGGHHHH SO CUTE.

daveed diggs was freaking hilarious as thomas jefferson in hamilton, he was the true comedic backbone of the movie (sorry awkwafina). his portrayal of sebastian was younger, more original, i love his version more. i also love the all the added lore in the movie, from the coral moon to the mermaids' siren songs to the brother-sister relationship of triton and ursula. you can learn more about the worldbuilding in the tie-in guide to merfolk book.

all in all, to me, the live-action little mermaid meant everything to me, as a black girl who loved the original animated movie since childhood, and as a disney fan who believed in this re-adaptation from the very adapation. in spite of everything, i still have some pretty high hopes for snow white. rachel zegler and halle bailey will always be my disney princesses.

Liv you don’t have to answer this if you’re not comfortable with it but I was just wondering if you have any tips on how to have safe sex? I feel like those kinds of conversations are so overlooked in media and as a person who’s never been sexually active im kinda nervous and scared. I know having a condom it’s important but what else? Like, how to prevent infections or something like that… anyway yeah, sorry if that was an intrusive ask. I hope you have a nice day!

EDIT: i say this below the cut, but i want to add it here too i am not an expert i am just a person speaking from what i know and sharing what resources i can.

first of all please DON'T apologize!! this is such an important question/subject and i think it's very sweet you came to me with it, and i appreciate you trusting me to help!!

off the top of my head the three biggest things that came to mind were condoms (the big obvious one) but also ideally a backup birth control method if contraception is necessary, making sure you and your partner are tested for STDs/STIs (also probably obvious) and just generally are able to communicate about stuff like that, and (something that i wish more ppl talked about!!) lube. lube helps reduce friction, which prevents any tearing (both internally but also for condoms!! just make sure the type of lube you're using is ok to be used with whatever kind of condom you're using.) i've been saying for years that more ppl need to get on board with using lube because it is there to help!!

when it comes to sexual hygiene it's going to differ a lot for every person, not just depending on your anatomy but because everybody's body is different. everyone says "pee after sex to prevent UTIs!!" but the reality is that sometimes that just doesn't help—i know ppl who deal with chronic UTIs because they have a rly sensitive PH/flora and sex just fucks with it (no pun intended.) yeast infections can happen too. the most important thing is that you know this is NORMAL and is not something you need to be scared of or embarrassed about.

please for the love of god my sweet angel if you are a vagina haver do NOT use internal "feminine washes." they are BAD for you and your snatch. no matter how "natural" or "ph balanced" they claim to be they are not meant to go inside you and can rly fuck with your body chemistry. use gentle unscented soap around the area and otherwise JUST water to clean inside. (here's a link to a webpage from the royal women's hospital on dos/don'ts for hygiene! it covers everything from washing to menstrual care to sexual hygiene, but it is specific to vaginal care.)

i'm not an expert, or a doctor, i'm just a girl on the internet who's sharing what she knows with you. but i want you to be informed and feel empowered and reassured by that information, so i found some resources on safe (/"safer") sex for you in case you want to read some stuff from people who know what they're talking about.

Stardust (2024)

We are made of stardust. Our kinship with the universe helps us to revel in connection and interdependence, and it reminds us that we are built for change. This sermon was presented to The Unitarian Society in East Brunswick on June 2, 2024, by Rev. Lyn Cox.

The story of the universe’s origins fills me with awe and wonder. In this congregation, filled as it is with scientists and educators and keen observers of the moment, I suspect I am not alone. In particular today, the scientific story of the universe leads me to reflect on time and change, awe and wonder.

In this morning’s story, we talked about what happened between the first few seconds of the universe to eight and a half billion years later with the formation of a young planet earth. Within a fraction of a second after the big bang, sub-atomic particles formed. Within a few minutes, the universe had Hydrogen and Helium. Yet it took a couple of hundred million years for the universe to generate light in what we think of as visible wavelengths. Some changes seem to happen instantly. Some take a long time to manifest.

Science gives us evidence for a lineage that traces back to the beginning of time. All of the elements in our bodies came from that first generation of stars, cooking Hydrogen and Helium into things like Carbon, Oxygen, Iron, Calcium. 

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson said: 

“Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. That’s kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us.” [End quote]

Everything that makes up the molecules of us, the ground we walk upon, the water we drink, the food we eat, the clouds in the sky--every atom of everything we can see, touch, or know was once part of the burning heart of a star. You are part of the universe. You are part of the story of time and space, change and revolution, cooling down and burning bright again. 

I believe you have many reasons to be optimistic and excited about the future. There are strong common bonds and shared values here, such as scientifically curious minds, souls that welcome reflection and mindfulness, hearts open to sharing strength and hope, a shared commitment to racial justice, and a legacy of educating young children to become creative, open-minded peacemakers. There are many gifts that are part of the character of this congregation and many gifts among you as members and friends. 

And I know change is hard. Being open to the unfolding universe takes courage, and the outcome is uncertain. And many people are experiencing profound personal change at the same time, which makes it harder to let go of the things that seemed like they should be constant. Not to mention that there is a lot of uncertainty in the world. How we choose to respond may transform us. A lot of change is happening.  It’s not easy to be in-between, to be unsettled, to be in motion, and yet these places of uncertainty may bring us gifts of discernment and spiritual growth. 

You may be feeling like a Hydrogen atom in the burning heart of a primordial star. Going from gas to liquid to solid doesn’t sound comfortable or easy. Yet I know that you are resilient and strong, and that becoming the community you are called to be means facing the future with courage. 

Knowing that change is happening can be balanced with the feeling of stillness that comes from observing the sky. We know our sun has a lifespan as all stars do, but for the entirety of human history we have relied on the turning earth that brings the sun into view at predictable times. The constellations change, but over millennia, so we feel like we have a connection with ancient stargazers. The moon phases come and go in ways that seem reliable, and when we can observe the moon it calls to mind and heart the poetry of generations. We can feel connected in the midst of change. 

Change and connectedness are both true. Noticing the movement of matter and energy helps us to harness that change, to cooperate with the forces that create and uphold life. Sometimes change comes in the form of learning. We’ve learned a lot about the origins of the universe in the last forty or fifty years. New telescopes let scientists see farther into the cosmos, which also means farther back in time as the light from long-ago stars finally reaches us. I bet C (a member of the congregation who gives talks about astronomy) would tell us all about the wonder of stargazing if we ask. 

Recently refined computer models lead astronomers to suggest a complex early universe, with stars forming in companionship. Previously, they thought the primordial stars, the mother stars as they were called, were formed in isolation. So perhaps if we have some metaphors rolling around in our head about how lonely it is to be a star, it’s time to revise those. The universe has always been interdependent. We are made of star stuff. Our paths of transformation are bound up together. We are part of the same forces as the eternal lights in the heavens, and we are the way the universe has developed to know itself. 

It seems to me that this lunar perspective, with which we notice both the feeling of stillness and the signs of change, could inspire those of us involved in congregational life. Even when a congregation is undergoing tremendous change, there is something comforting about the reliability of a church. Spiritual communities meet every week. Sacred buildings like this one are strong and solid. There is a spirit of history and heritage that moves through these halls. It might seem like life here is as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; or maybe part of us wishes that it were so.

Yet I also see a people on the move. I see children and youth who are growing and asking different questions every year. I see adults whose concerns shift with the condition of the country and the cycle of life. The congregation forges partnerships for social justice and for fellowship. Newcomers become friends, and often friends become members, bringing their new ideas and wisdom. Congregations change. We cannot assume that having always done something a certain way is going to continue to be the best method for channeling our energy.

Everything changes. This community has changed, this neighborhood has changed, and the nature of religious life and voluntary organizations in the United States has changed. We must learn new skills and be open to drastic structural change in order to meet the rising future with the same all-embracing love and transformative passion for justice that has animated Unitarian Universalism from the beginning. And I believe this congregation has that love and that passion and that capacity for transformation. You are capable of the change that is necessary to clarify your mission and live into it in creative, life-giving, entirely new ways. Interdependence is the future. 

What is this community called to do together? How are you inspired to cooperate with the forces that create and uphold life? How are we as a Unitarian Universalist movement called to move in the world? As surely as the moon circles the earth, as surely as the tides pull in and out, the world around us is changing. We are going to need to be open to surprise and adaptation when things don’t happen the way we expect. In our quest to be a hospitable, compassionate, spiritual people, we are going to need to change to stay true to our values and our expectations of ourselves. What that means at the local level is up to you.

Change can be scary. We might be nervous about asking more of ourselves at a time when current events leave some of us feeling drained. We might worry about losing the sense of security--of stillness--that comes from keeping things the same, even when those things aren’t working as well as they used to. Perhaps there have been times in your individual life when you felt the same way. Each one of us is a body in motion.

With a lunar perspective, we see that stillness and change are simultaneous. They are both true, depending on your vantage point. We can move with the tides and still take comfort in the assurance that this community provides a gentle, welcoming light.

In addition to this perspective on time and connectedness, science can lead us to a sense of wonder. Learning more about rational, scientific explanations for how the universe is unfolding only add to my feelings of awe and my gratitude for life. There is a sense of joy and connection in discovering that the same elements and laws of nature are at work in our bodies and among the galaxies.

Knowing that the story of the cosmos has followed reliable laws of nature does not take away the amazement. Among all of the planets in all of the galaxies, the elements have combined to create a home for life here. Among all of the beings that have existed on this planet, we are among the lucky ones who can remember and imagine. In all of the history of humanity, short as it is, the people of our generations have the ability to learn directly about the surface of other planets, to send messages back out to the cosmos, to see images of our own planet swimming through space.

We are blessed indeed. The universe has unfolded such that we have the precious and rare opportunity to seek and to understand. What meaning shall we draw from this? What do we want to do with this gift?

It seems to me that letting ourselves revel in awe of the interdependent web would be a start. Sing praises, write poems, read scientific papers, do what you can to spread enthusiasm for the world we are lucky enough to inherit. Keep doing those things. For Unitarian Universalists, the free and responsible search for truth and meaning is a religious experience.

If we’re ready to go further, we can advocate for the process of discovery. We can’t take for granted the freedoms of accurate science in the classroom, scientific research unfettered by corporate interests or anti-science extremism, or the will to use our collective knowledge to preserve our planet. We can’t take for granted libraries and schools that are allowed to help people to know the truth. We must resist efforts to hold hostage our sense of hospitality and mutual responsibility. 

A sense of wonder is a powerful thing. Let us honor the stars that we are made of with appreciation for the universe as it is and burning curiosity for what we have yet to learn.

The stars twinkling in the night sky are fiery suns, turning matter into energy every second of their existence. Change is the heritage of the universe. Embrace the changes ahead of you with the same sense of awe and wonder that you bring to the constellations, to the sunrise and sunset, to the visitations of comets. As Ms. Frizzle from the children’s show, The Magic School Bus says, “Take chances! Make mistakes! Get messy!” You are made of star stuff. Now is the time for this nebula of stars to burn brightly and give birth to something new.

this fatal kiss follows gisela, an undead water nymph (a rusałka) who dreams of returning to the mortal world, which can be done if she receives a kiss from a mortal. but its kind of hard to get someone to kiss you when you’re freezing at the touch. in comes kazik, the town’s exorcist, who cant stand the spirits that run the town he lives in. after flubbing gisela’s exorcism, he agrees to get a mortal to kiss her. insert hijinks!

so, right off the bat, i loved this book’s LGBT+ rep. the fact both the MCs are bisexual is so beautiful i loved to see it. the fact gisela and kazik are unapologetically bi is so refreshing to see. the lgbt+ rep ate in this book. no notes there.

the chemistry between kazik & gisela was great. gisela is such a funny, charismatic and easy character to empathise with. kazik’s growth was great to witness, and his interactions with gisela are so good. their chemistry was off the charts. 

as a fellow slavic (dont ask from where specifically nobody knows) i LOVED the seamless integration of slavic culture within the story. yapping about kefir & goulash made my little balkan heart sing, and the way the general vibe of the story managed to balance its setting to be contemporaneous yet also holding true to its slavic nature was so nice to read. its rare to read a book featuring eastern european culture and god i couldnt get enough.

the book also has some GREAT humour. this book does not take itself seriously, and it was such a good book to read. it had a nice lighthearted vibe which made the atmosphere feel so cozy whilst managing to still crack me up with funny one-liners or even just how the characters were acting. like im sorry gisela is a comedy queen. kazik and other characters did have some humorous moments, but gisela solo’d.

now.. you may be wondering why this is only a 3-star. 

for starters, i think the biggest thing holding this book back for me was the lack of tension. i wasnt truly worried for the main characters, even when they were in “concerning” or “dangerous” situations. there werent too many situations where they were in danger, but even then, the tension was resolved super quickly.

the situations they were placed in werent too serious, so i knew the characters would make it out ok, therefore i had no motivation to actually… read this. and ive read lighthearted low stakes stories with no tension (like legends & lattes), but the plot was still interesting! it felt like the story really floundered in the middle, was gripping for the first 50 & last 100 pages. 

the world building at times suffered from exposition dumps, especially surrounding the other spirits in the area and certain lore. i am by no means a fiction writer so i imagine i would do a horrific job at explaining fantasy elements if i were to hypothetically write a story but. a lot of times the exposition or lore dumps were literally just “insert creature. they do xyz, and beef with abc”. it did get a bit annoying by the end where something was only explained once it had been introduced. sometimes it went nowhere, and sometimes the worldbuilding was addressed there & then (like the spirit just introduced was staring gisela or kazik straight in the face). idk i got tired of the repetitive way lore was conveyed.

the ending was a bit of a letdown im not going to lie. i expected a lot more to happen, especially in the epilogue. the plot has mostly been resolved, but yet everything is kind of left super open? gisela’s family is just touched on after that being her motivation for the entire plot.. kazik’s story still being open… aleksy doing literally who knows what. idk i would’ve liked a chapter with a bit more of a flash forward & with a more conclusive ending for the characters.

overall, i will say i had a good time. although i wasn’t reaching for this book quite often due to there being a lack of tension to pull me in & have me worried for the characters, once i was reading i was having a ball. the atmosphere and world created by jasinska was fabulous, and really gave a cutesy cottagecore meets mythology vibe. i will always give extra points for hitting me in the Culture Feels™️, but the ending was a bit disappointing :(

i can’t wait for this book to come out so i can oggle at gisela fan art

no hard feelings was soooo bad no one watch it. for what it is, it is NOT funny or crazy or even heartfelt enough to sell the premise (32 year old woman gets paid by a rich couple to groom their 19 year old son). I think a comedy like that can work, given that the concept is treated as ridiculously as it felt to watch, but the tonal inconsistency is such a killer of anything of substance.

I told wolfgang that it was just confusing. I didn't know what kind of message the writer was trying to convey- did they want us to root for the protagonists? despise them? feel uncomfortable? I'm seeing grown women defending this weird ass movie on the grounds that "well people in the movie SAY the age gap and sexual coercion are bad so it's okay!" like no the fuck it's not lmao. this is some scott pilgrim tier arguing. there's never anything that really indicates that the relationship is odd besides people making jokes that jennifer lawrence is old. it's played for laughs and there's no consequences for it.

there is no balance between the serious aspects and the funny ones, and I really just kind of sat there wondering "what am I supposed to be doing" the entire time. not a single joke landed for me. it was painfully unfunny, which made the experience even more unpleasant.

it teeters right on the line between "wacky immoral out-there comedy" a la adam sandler, and "heartwarming romcom" and these themes do nooooot mix well. it's almost like you can tell they're holding back on the jokes and upping the drama, which, for a movie that is about a 32 year old trying to fuck a teenager, NOT GREAT!

the emotional core to the story left a lot to be desired, too. I liked lawrence's character enough to care about her backstory, which was hardly developed and really kind of rushed in all regards. same with the kid. the pacing was honestly just shot all around, the supporting cast was bland and had nothing to do, and it just kind of felt like a nothing movie. characters are introduced and then are never mentioned again. the jokes feel restrained and watered down. there's zero-sum chemistry between ANY of the actors and the emotional moments are so painfully hamfisted and soulless it was like watching a kleenex commercial. the overall weird pushy sexual coercion wasn't framed in any way outside of uncomfortable. it was hard to watch.

probably one of the worst "comedies" to come out in a few years. 1/10. do not fucking watch this.
