Chapter 70
The phone rang. Wooyeon stood in front of the smoking area and scratched the floor with the front of his shoe. People coming and going stared at him.
-The customer is not answering the phone…
Without hesitation, he hung up the phone and dialed another number. After about three beeps, he heard a familiar voice on the other end.
-Hello?
It was Dohyun.
“Ah, Sunbae. Did you fix the screen?”
Wooyeon straightened his phone and leaned back against the wooden plank. Behind the screen, Garam and Seongyu were smoking cigarettes. They had finished their cake and were having a ''post-meal cigarette''.
-Yeah, I'm on my way. Did you enjoy the lecture?
Dohyun's voice sounded a little different coming from the other end of the phone. It was still soft and gentle, but it had a somewhat subdued tone. Wooyeon lowered his eyes and spoke slowly.
“Yeah… I'm at the café now, waiting for Noona and Seongyu to finish smoking."
-…In the smoking area?
“Yeah. Are you driving?”
He must have been in the car, but there was a buzz on the other end of the phone. Instead of the sound of an engine or road noise, it seemed like a faint hum.
Dohyun answered with a slight pause.
-No, I'm walking.
Wooyeon figured he hadn't gotten in the car yet. Wooyeon nodded without saying anything. There was no way he could have seen him over the phone, but Dohyun continued calmly.
-You should've stayed in the club room. It's dangerous with the reporters out.
"It's not like I'm alone."
-Still.
They won't be able to get a full-fledged camera on him anyway. At least if they had any sense, they wouldn't swarm him. He hadn't officially shown his face, so he wasn't in danger yet.
“I…Sunbae.”
Wooyeon slowly started talking and touched his earlobe. It was strange to feel so down after his conversation at the café earlier. He thought everything was fine, but apparently the past was still weighing on him.
-Yeah, why?
“It's no big deal…”
Two thoughts weighed in his head: should he tell him, or shouldn't he? They had been apart for only about three hours, so if he acted like a child, Dohyun might feel burdened.
But against his better judgment, his lips moved of their own accord.
“….I miss you.”
-….
He didn't hear a word from the other end of the phone. The occasional sound of breathing was the only indication that the call hadn't ended. Unable to contain his embarrassment, Wooyeon was about to say something when Dohyun spoke up.
-Stay right there.
“What?”
Beep, the phone call ended. Wooyeon looked at his phone in confusion. The screen with the call duration disappeared, and the default wallpaper with no settings appeared. He stared at the screen for a long time, but nothing changed.
“…Did he hang up?”
He said he wanted to see him, and this was the answer he got back. Before Wooyeon could think of anything else, his head went blank. He was about to laugh when he heard footsteps in the distance.
Wooyeon slowly lifted his head away from the screen. Tap, tap, the footsteps came closer. His slow heartbeat quickened, and familiar pheromones mingled with the breeze.
“….”
It was like a mirage. His hair was disheveled, his pace was uncharacteristically quick, and his expression was one of impatience.
“Yeon-ah.”
There's something called a fox star. It's a star that appears through the clouds on a cloudy day and disappears in an instant. Like a fox that mesmerizes a person, it's a mischievous thing that takes over their minds and steals their hearts.
“…Sunbae?”
Dohyun rushed forward and embraced Wooyeon without hesitation. The pheromones that were drifting out mixed with his body temperature and made him feel hot. The faint smell of fabric softener, and the distinctive scent of Dohyun. All of it calmed his anxious heart.
"Ah… that was tough."
Dohyun muttered in a languid voice, breathing heavily. He could feel the beating of his heart in his heaving chest. After another deep breath, he tightened his arms around Wooyeon.
“That was a lot of running.”
“…You ran?”
Wooyeon raised his hands and wrapped his arms around Dohyun's waist. He buried his face in his hair and rubbed his cheek against him. A muffled laugh tickled his ear.
“I was on my way to the club room.”
“….”
“I was just about to enter the building when the phone rang and I came this way.”
Wooyeon clamped his mouth shut and snuggled into Dohyun's arms. A large hand gently patted his back. He soothed him like a child, stroking his back from top to bottom.
“You said you missed me, so I came quickly.”
His voice was like a fox star. The soft, gentle voice seemed to cast a spell on Wooyeon. If he stayed like this, he would never be able to escape.
“People will stare.”
"…Even when I was alone, they stared."
Wooyeon, who answered barely audibly, breathed in the pheromones. If people are going to stare no matter what, he might as well do what he wants. Fortunately, Dohyun didn't seem to have any intention of pushing him away.
Garam and Seongyu, reeking of smoke, stepped outside after quite some time had passed. Their eyes widened as soon as they saw Dohyun.
“Eh? Dohyun hyung?”
“What, Kim Dohyun came?”
Wooyeon flinched at the familiar voices and pulled away. He had no intention of showing affection in front of them. But Dohyun grabbed him and pulled him back into his arms.
"Why are you bringing a guy who doesn't even smoke to smoke? It smells.”
With one hand on his back and the other wrapped around his shoulders, he berated Garam and Seongyu. He was scolding them for smelling like cigarettes, as if he didn't want Wooyeon to smell them.
“Hey, Wooyeon said it was okay.”
“Still.”
“Ugh, you asshole. Every time this happens, I lose all the affection I had for you.”
Garam went on to call Dohyun out for all sorts of things: don't play games, don't you just want to cuddle with Wooyeon, don't you realize that he smoked cigarettes, and other things. After all of the insults, Dohyun's calm response was.
“If you know it's bullshit, pretend like you don't.”
“….”
Wooyeon pushed Dohyun away, and his face turned bright red. He glanced to the side and saw Garam grinning from ear to ear with mischievous eyes.
“What, more hugs?”
“…Forget it.”
Even Seongyu, who he trusted, had a smile on his face. Only Dohyun shoved his hands in his pockets in disappointment. Wooyeon turned away from them to cool the heat on both cheeks. He felt a little embarrassed by their obviously teasing gazes.
He was wiping his face off with one hand when he saw a group of people approaching the smoking area.
“This guy's in a bad mood today…”
Most of them were strangers, but Wooyeon recognized two of them. The one with bleached hair was Kang Junsung, and next to him was Junsung's classmate. The moment he reflexively cringed, the other person noticed him.
“…Seon Wooyeon?”
Junsung's mouth dropped open in surprise. Junsung's friends also looked at him in confusion. Wooyeon vaguely looked away with an annoyed expression.
“What, isn't that Ji Suhyang's son?”
“Eh, Ji Suhyang has a son?”
“Didn't you read the article? He's an illegitimate son…”
“What the hell, those guys.”
Garam frowned. She glared at them, her eyes fierce. The men, who had been babbling loudly, flinched and shut up.
"Who talks about someone right in front of their eyes?"
Garam snapped at the other group in a gruff voice. Wooyeon didn't change his expression, but he dissuaded her.
“You shouldn't care about that.”
It wasn't the first time he'd heard other people gossiping, and he didn't need to respond to each one. Judging by the pallor on Junsung's face, he was right.
“It's not the first time… It's okay.”
However, the expressions of the three people changed at those words. Even Seongyu, who was so good-natured, frowned. Dohyun put his arm around Wooyeon's shoulders and slowly turned away.
“Let's go.”
He looked offended, but not as angry as Garam. He merely glanced in Junsung's direction once more.
And just as they were about to walk away.
“Wait, wait, wait! Seon Wooyeon!”
For a moment Dohyun's pheromones sharpened. Wooyeon reflexively looked up at him. His face was rigid and cold.
“Hey, talk to me…!”
Junsung darted forward and reached out for Wooyeon.
This time, Wooyeon really wanted to grab Junsung's arm and twist it back. But before that, Dohyun stepped between them.
“….”
His outstretched hand flailed helplessly in the air. Dohyun stared at Junsung, his arms wrapped around Wooyeon as if to protect him.
“It seems like it's a habit of yours to reach out first.”
His voice was gentle, but his eyes were not. The sharp pheromones were also full of warning. Garam and Seongyu, catching up to the situation, whispered to themselves.
“What the hell, isn't he the one then?”
"I think so. The one from the group project."
Junsung bit his lip, looking back and forth between Dohyun and Wooyeon. He looked vaguely offended, but the overwhelming height difference must have intimidated him. Clenching his fists, Junsung ignored Dohyun and turned to Wooyeon.
“You need to talk to me. I have to tell you something.”
“I don't have anything to say.”
Wooyeon said and grabbed Dohyun's arm. He's said many times that he didn't want to talk with Junsung. Looking at his haggard appearance and the bags under his eyes, even if he listened to him, he'd only hear excuses.
“Wait…Seon Wooyeon, hey!”
Junsung didn't give up and kept calling out to Wooyeon. He couldn't grab his arm or anything, but he persistently chased them. Just as Garam was about to turn around and say, “Aah, you crazy bastard,” Junsung shouted.
“I didn't do it!”
Wooyeon suddenly stopped walking. Dohyun, who was being dragged by Wooyeon, slowly looked back at Junsung. Junsung ran his hands through his hair in frustration.
“Ha, fuck. I didn't do it!"
A cold silence descended. Garam exchanged glances with Seongyu, wondering what the hell he was talking about. When everyone fell silent, Junsung stammered.
“I saw the article, I saw it… I didn't do it. I tried to call you to tell you about it, but you didn't pick up the phone…”
“Phone?”
Wooyeon's expression changed. He furrowed his brow and thoughtfully recalled. Then he spoke in a calm voice.
"I didn't receive anything?"
He had checked his cell phone several times over the weekend, but he hadn't heard from Junsung. Not a call, not even a message.
“…What?”
“Contact…”
It was weird, though. After his rambling apology that day, Junsung hadn't contacted him at all. It's not like he didn't have his number, and they still had the group project chat.
“Don't be ridiculous. How many times have I…!”
“What do you mean by 'many'?”
Suddenly, Dohyun interrupted. He looked down at Junsung with a blank expression.
"Why do you have to contact him so much?"
At that moment, a possibility flashed through Wooyeon's mind. But before he could even suspect it, a cold voice interrupted his thoughts.
"You should have messaged him during the group project."
The mood was tense. Dohyun and Junsung glared at each other like they were going to eat each other. After gritting his teeth for the briefest of moments, Junsung turned to Wooyeon.
“Hey, I need to talk to you alone.”
“…I have nothing to talk about with you.”
“Fuck, Seon Wooyeon!”
A terrifying pheromone shot out. It was coming from Dohyun, not Wooyeon. Flinching, Junsung stepped back, his expression grim.
"Ha… fucking hell."
His eyes changed. His gaze, filled with rage, passed Dohyun and landed on Wooyeon.
“Are you in a relationship?”
“What?”
For once, Wooyeon thought he was being really random. Whether or not he was in a relationship was none of Junsung's business, especially not with such a betrayed expression on his face.
“Fuck, you pretended not to care.”
“What, what did he say?”
Garam asked in a low voice, but it didn't stop there. Junsung raised the corners of his mouth crookedly.
“They don't know, do they?"
Wooyeon didn't have to ask what they didn't know. “Of course they don't know,” he muttered, and Junsung jerked his chin up in a snort.
“You were a fucking pig.”
The three people's gazes turned toward Wooyeon. The subtly still air gave off a different vibe than before.
"If you had met Seon Wooyeon in middle school, you wouldn't be able to date like this. Isn't that right?”
Junsung looked around at the group with a proud look on his face. After looking at all four of them, he turned to Wooyeon.
“Money may have fixed your face, but it can't fix your shitty personality.”
“….”
“Don't your friends know? That you beat me like a dog and paid me off to cover it up?”
Wooyeon couldn't say anything and clenched his fists. Not because what Junsung said was true, but because he didn't dare look back. Junsung took a step forward, as if that gave him confidence.
“These people are also next to you because of your money…”
But Junsung didn't get to finish his sentence, because just as he got closer, Dohyun released his pheromones. His pheromones exploded out, aimed solely at Junsung.
“What's wrong? Keep going.”
Dohyun said, releasing a chilling spray of pheromones. His voice was eerily cold. When Wooyeon turned around, he saw a cold face with no change in expression.
“Kang Junsung?”
“….”
“Yeah… I remember that name.”
His black eyes flashed fiercely. His usually gentle gaze was now covered in fierce anger. The corner of Dohyun's mouth quirked upward as he spoke softly.
“You, I mean.”
Junsung flinched, his shoulders shaking. He stood on his own two feet, but his complexion showed that even that was a struggle. It was a good thing he wasn't drooling like he did when Wooyeon had sprayed him with pheromones.
“If you're going to say you didn't do it, you should first say 'what' you didn't do.”
“….”
“No one's going to believe you if you say you didn't do it when you bring up middle school.”
The soft voice was as calm as ever. Even the pheromones that spewed out were rational in their own way. When Dohyun realized Junsung was gasping for breath, he spoke in a flat voice.
"If you're going to explain, just explain. If you're going to argue, just argue. Don't bother people by doing both."
Junsung bite his lower lip hard. His lips were white, and he stared at Wooyeon with trembling eyes. It was a very unfair and gloomy look.
“…I didn't post the picture.”
“….”
“Seriously, fuck…I'm not even signed up for that site…”
Wooyeon thought it was surprising that he looked so 'betrayed'. He'd expected Junsung to be the culprit, but he sounded too sincere to be lying. Wooyeon opened his mouth to say something, but Dohyun responded dryly.
“Then you must have taken the picture.”
Junsung's face paled. It was the look of one who had been stabbed in the heart. To everyone's astonishment, Dohyun casually sized him up.
“Stupid asshole.”
As if nothing else was worth saying, he grabbed Wooyeon's hand and collected his pheromones. As he turned to leave, Garam grabbed Junsung by his collar.
“Fuck, that was you?”
“Noona!”
Seongyu quickly grabbed Garam. Wooyeon tried to stop her, but he couldn't because Dohyun wouldn't let go of his hand. Without looking back, Dohyun walked away, dragging Wooyeon with him.
"Sunbae, wait, Sunbae!"
Wooyeon put pressure on his legs with a panicked face. The shouting grew louder and louder, and Dohyun showed no sign of letting go of Wooyeon. Garam and Seongyu, as well as Junsung's friends who had caught up with them. The crowd slowly began to gather around them.
“Hey, let go of me. You bastard, I'm going to…!”
“Noona, you can't do this!”
“Oh, why are you doing this! Hey, Kang Junsung, hey, come to your senses!”
In the end, Wooyeon pulled Dohyun as hard as he could. Dohyun stopped walking and slowly looked back at Wooyeon. Wooyeon was frowning and looking in Garam's direction.
"We can't go like this! We have to stop her!"
"Why?"
“Why?”
Wooyeon repeated, as if he didn't know what that meant. Dohyun looked down at him blankly.
“She's a good fighter, Mun Garam. She'll hit him if he hits her, but you won't get hit.”
“No, that's not the point. If he hits me, I should hit him.”
Getting sued would make things very difficult. Paying a settlement fee would be fine, but getting into trouble at school is a different matter.
Finally, Dohyun nodded in understanding.
“Ah…yeah, that's true.”
Dohyun left Wooyeon where he was and walked back with steady steps. His pace was so quick that Wooyeon was flustered and just stared blankly behind him.
When Dohyun reached them, he effortlessly pulled Garam back.
“Hey, fuck, Kim Dohyun, even you…!”
Then, the unbelievable happened. Dohyun grabbed Junsung's forearm and swung his fist as hard as he could. With a popping sound, Junsung's head snapped to the right.
“….”
“….”
The surroundings were silent as if a cup of tea had been spilled. Not only Wooyeon but also Garam, who was very upset, gaped in shock.
Everyone was quiet, Dohyun let go of the stunned Junsung and looked at his friend.
“Remember this.”
“If you can't remember it, take out your cell phone and write it down.”
010, the number began and ended with a total of eleven digits. His friend did as he was told and looked up, dumbfounded. Dohyun shook his right hand and frowned.
“Tell him to call me when he wakes up.”
“…”
“Press charges, ask for a settlement, whatever, but if you call Wooyeon I won't sit still.”
After muttering that, Dohyun looked at Garam and Seongyu, and then at Garam, who was still dazed, and said casually.
“If you're going to hit me, I should hit you.”
