Bumblebee was always the plan part 2

It’s time to continue with my controversial posts. When I began writing this, it was intended to be mostly a response to arguments I see around and EF’s. Then my pretty confrontational post that had led to say to a friend “Thankfully no one reads my blog” became much bigger than I ever expected. There’s a good chance I would have gone for a different tone had I known it would get 500x the usual view of… 1, which is usually mine. This been said, it would have been a mistake. Still, I feel like I have to address some points that seem to have confused a few people and this is definitely to do that.

But first, soothing music to prevent knee-jerk reactions.

Let’s start with a claim that was kind of controversial: the suggestion that Blake could still turn out to be a lesbian instead of bi or pan as some claimed this was in itself bi erasure. I understand where this complaint comes from as bisexuality was basically considered to not exist in media, for example, Sex and the City has an episode where all the main characters but Samantha treat it as something alienating and a way to still be in the closet. Yeah, some episodes have not aged well. And I’ve lost count of the number of people that still don’t consider it a thing, even among progressive fandom like Janelle Monae’s and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s (I just gave you 2 bi anthems1). Just so we’re clear, even though I do think Blake is bothsexual (let’s see if someone recognizes that reference), I have to put on table of her being a lesbian as some gay people have dated members of the opposite sex for a very long time, and there’s high probability some of them were abused in said relationships. I can’t ignore those experiences (I suppose I can, but I shouldn’t and hopefully never will).

Black Sun: the ship that didn’t sail

Again, there were a few that didn’t like that I compared BB and BS, which they interpreted as a dick contest. That really wasn’t my goal. I did that because those were the ships involving Blake that had a chance to happen (Catmeleon and Enabling-abuse2 were not on the table) and I was arguing for Bumblebee having been the plan all along (which, to me, implies that Black Sun was meant to be a red herring, though I didn’t flat out say it – sorry, I didn’t think I needed to). The point was to illustrate how there had been hints for Bumblebee.

I argued for that way before volume 6 by pointing out several clues like the dance arc, the songs and the injury. At the time, someone asked me how I could know BB wasn’t the red herring. There are 2 reasons why:

While it’s not lacking in hints and foreshadowing, they are (mostly3) on the subtle side when compared to the very obvious Sun’s crush on Blake;

They’re a LGBTQ+ pairing. There are huge double standards when it comes to LGBTQ+ in comparison to hetero ones – many people will deny the first one until it’s impossible to do so. The point of the bait and switch is to have a little twist and you can’t have that if a significant part of your audience notices the switch, but doesn’t see the bait.

And if you have doubts about the last point, remember: in 6x11, Adam attacked Yang out of jealousy, then Blake held her hand while making a speech that put them as equal in contrast to Blake-Adam, a relationship where one of them constantly tried to make the other feel small (the point of the infamous speech). There were many denying BB. Then, he tried to make Yang feel insecure about Blake by telling her she had made the same promise to him and asked the super platonic question: “What does she even see in you?” and people still tried to deny it. In the last episode, Blake and Yang spent the time holding each other’s hands and yet, there were still people denying it. Not that I’m complaining, since it only increased my celebration time. It was like: episode 6x11, “yeah! Bees” for 3 days, the internet crashed my party for one, then 6x12, “yeah! Bees! This time is for sure” for another 3 days, again I had my enthusiasm dashed and finally, “yeah! Bees”. That time it stuck. So thanks guys! It would have been bad if by 6x13 I had already used all my fireworks.

If you thought BS was going to happen – that’s normal, because it was the bait. If I am aware that people tend to think of others as straight until proven otherwise, why do you think the writers aren’t? I may not live in the same country as them, but I still consume a lot of USA’s media and I know that if guy stalks girl, he usually gets her. Not to mention, the number of times media announces a LGBTQ+ character as tactic to gain some support yet deliver nothing, like saying Dumbledore is gay even though there’s nothing in the films or books indicating it (let’s leave the conversation about the “word of God” for some other time). There were more than a few LGBTQ+ people who were afraid Bumblebee would turn out to be just that: queerbaiting.

Miles and Kerry knew all of that and, more importantly, they were aware that you knew it too, so they played on your assumptions to make their bait-and-switch. However, there were plenty of hints that Sun was just the red herring and that Bumblebee was going to happen. Last time, I focused on the latter, this time let’s concentrate on the first. Let’s take a look at Sun and Blake’s relationship, shall we?

Sun was introduced in the last episodes of V1 and Blake trusted him immediately, because… he’s a Faunus. Though she told him about herself and the White Fang, he showed immediately he’s not on the same page as her as Faunus rights mean a lot to her and little to nothing to him. In 2x01, Sun talks to Neptune about Blake and concluded “and the best part is she’s a Faunus”, which goes completely against Blake’s words in the next episode “I want people to see me for who I am, not what I am”. She began going on a downward spiral to which he reacts with “Is she being all Blake-y?”, while Yang’s the one who gets through to her by exposing her own vulnerability.

Sun not fully understanding Blake is something the show hammers in our heads quite a few times even in more recent volumes. Like when he assumed she’s on her way to fight the White Fang when she was actually going to Menagerie to rest. Or suggested destroying the WF while Blake wanted to take it back.

In volume 3, they had literally no interactions besides him winking at her in the Vytal Festival – yes, she blushed, which can be explained by the fact that he did it in front of an entire stadium or that she had a crush on him. Personally, I’m inclined to the latter, but it really doesn’t mean much: not all crushes lead to something. A lot of them are a result of idealization and I think that was the case for Blake. By the way, I have to speak of Blake’s crush as likely, not certain precisely because it was never actually confirmed.

When Yang asked Weiss where Blake and Ruby were, Sun was there, yet it was Yang alone who went after Blake. The next time we saw him, it’s after their injuries and he is noticing an injured Blake grabbing Yang’s hand.

No, this shot doesn’t exist to show Sun seeing Blake injured, because he already knew that. He had just told Ruby that Yang was going to be OK, and the one who brought her there was Blake. Not to mention that if the point was to make him notice Blake’s injuries, it makes no sense for their hands to appear. Yang would have been kept out of the frame, instead of taking up more space than Blake. To me, this is the moment where Sun realizes Blake’s feelings for Yang. If the intention was for him to notice Blake’s injured, it would have made much more sense to see his face, then cut to her. Yes, they could have done the same with their hands, but this way they left it more ambiguous which was probably the intention. It would have made no sense for them to choose that if it was meant for Black Sun, because the audience was more than aware he was interested in Blake. We had been since V1 as there was never anything subtle about their relationship.

In volume 4, he flirts, Blake is usually either apathetic or downright annoyed. The exception is after the injury, and like I said, he’s the one who brings up Yang, revealing he realizes the bond between them. He is also hurt by the chick whose feelings weren’t reciprocated (I talked about that at length in part 1). In volume 5, their relationship is platonic.

Really, in spite of spending the volumes 4 and 5 together, it’s not about developing Black Sun in a romantic way.

Oh, a kiss on the cheek isn't romantic. It can be, but in the context, it was merely a "thank you".

Black Sun hasn’t sunk yet

While RWBY isn’t over, the possibility for Black Sun isn’t completely gone, though I don’t think I’m lying when I say it’s unlikely. You can like it more than Bumblebee, but it’s all right to admit it’s improbable. We (almost) all have been there. For crying out loud, in MHA, I sort of ship Kacchako4 (loses 2/3 of her readers – and that’s why this piece of trivia was originally intended to appear much later).

After everything he’s done for her (that she didn’t ask for)

This is usually phrased in a disgusting way.

There is a lot to unpack here.

First, it’s ridiculous to think you can be owed love/getting into someone’s panties. You can’t. People either love you/want to do you, or they don’t. If you want to do something for someone else, great, but do it because you want to and like (not necessarily in a romantic way) said person or because you’re altruistic – don’t expect a reward. You wanted the guy to get the girl, fine. You know you can watch that in almost everything else, right?

Second, it’s idiotic to associate getting the girl with masculinity or not getting her with being “cucked”. If your notion of being a man is tied to getting someone else, that’s on you. If you need someone else to feel good about yourself, maybe you have some underlying issues to address (another reference to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – watch the show, especially if you’re making comments like the one I showed: you need it. I feel like the narrator in “S.O.B.s”).

Third, even by the logic of “after everything I’ve done for you”, Sun doesn’t win, because Yang paid a much bigger price: she lost an arm and had PTSD while he had a minor injury from which he had basically recovered by the next episode. This isn’t a “Yang deserves her” either – that argument is nonsensical no matter the pairing being defended, I’m just pointing out that it doesn’t even favor BS.

By the way, I noticed that a few people completely missed the point of why I compared Yang’s injury to Sun’s and think I did it to indicate Yang deserves it more or to win (?). It’s a bit confusing because I flat out say why I made the comparison, but here it goes again: it’s not to say Yang deserves Blake, but to indicate that, in fiction, we usually associate romance with higher stakes. I literally wrote:

“I think Yang’s and Sun’s injuries are everything I should need to prove the likelihood of BB as they contrast the two main Blake ships: Bumblebee and Black Sun. While heroes tend to save many people who are indeed just friends or sometimes not even that, there’s a reason why Superman and Spiderman usually include Lois Lane and MJ (or whoever the love interest is in said film) in the climax – it makes it more personal, raising the stakes. From this perspective, it’s easy to understand the importance given to either by comparing: what the injury was, who caused it, why and Blake’s reaction, thus allowing to conclude which couple was given more weight.”

That was me explaining what the points were as well as why I was comparing the 2.

And yes, paying attention to dramatic weight is completely valid, we are talking about fiction after all. It’s not like we accidentally walked in on a guy threatening a gal and saying “I’ll destroy everything you love… starting with her” as another woman appeared in real life. Things happened the way they did because writers (editors, directors, etc.) wanted them to. 

Don’t pretend you didn’t know that it’s relevant that the one who caused Yang’s injury was Adam, Blake’s ex-boyfriend, while Sun’s was caused by Ilia, the friend whose feelings weren’t reciprocated, and that it doesn’t say anything about the links Adam-Yang and Sun-Ilia. I lost count of the number of BSers who wanted Sun to fight Adam and wanted him to be the one taking Adam down (even though it got in the way of Yang’s closure), which shows many of you were perfectly aware of the importance of said connection.

As for the dyke representation… (the fact that they phrased it that way is very telling) if it was just that, then any lesbian couple would do. RWBY is about 4 female characters. Seriously, how come people never ask themselves why this one is so popular, even though Yang and Blake aren't the most popular characters? From what I've seen, Weiss and Yang are.

The claims of “pandering” and “SJW” have been raining for a while and I expect them to continue until they realize CRWBY can’t be bullied into erasing BB. Count on that to happen whenever a show reveals a main character is LGBTQ+ mid-series (unless it’s a particularly progressive show). If your reaction to seeing LGBTQ+ characters is to call it “pandering”, it says a lot about you, none of it good.

I know that we perceive straight white male as default. This is so entrenched in our culture that the first Transformers didn’t have any female transformers because the writers thought it would require an explanation. Yup, apparently you need an explanation to include half of the world’s population.

I suppose screaming “pandering” is better than to pull an EF and say “Bumblebee was and is the safest LGBTQ ship they could have done. Lesbian couples are the safest representation a show can make […] It’s more comfortable to see woman on woman action just because of how fantasized they are”, which:

doesn’t justify why BB is the safest LGBTQ+ couple as there are a ton of lesbian couples possible (White Rose, Checkmate/Monochrome, Freezerburn, etc.);

fails to consider the high number of LGBTQ+ women in RWBY when compared to LGBTQ+ men probably has something to do with the fact it has more female characters;

when did we see woman on woman action in RWBY? How did I miss that episode?

if lesbians are so appealing to straight men, how come they’re the ones whining the most about BB?

The whole straight-men-like-lesbians while being the ones complaining about them is particularly odd to me. It doesn’t sound like they like they are spending their time wrapped up in sexual fantasies. Maybe they are and can't stop. And that's why they don't like Bumblebee anymore... Poor things... But really, it just sounds like they need some kind of… safe space.

You can tell them not to worry. They still have most shows/books/films. And for the next 2-4 decades, they'll be able to count on Disney (taking shots at it since my very first post).

My issue with the netflix show 13 Reasons Why

So for anyone who doesn´t know yet, 13 Reasons Why is the netflix adaption of the same-titled book by Jay Asher from 2007.The plot of the book revolves around 16-year-old Hannah Baker, who committed suicide by overdose a while ago. Her classmate, Clay Jensen one day receives a package with seven cassettes, each side numbered from 1 to 13. Clay goes on a nightly trip through the town while Hannah´s voice on the cassettes tells him why she killed herself - and what role he played in it.

In the book, Hannah was more shy and kind of introverted. She was new in town and her only “friend” had just moved away. Then she fell for a guy and put his trust in him, so far as to give him her first kiss. Her trust is crushed when the same guy spreads around the rumor that he was allowed to touch her breasts and make out with her and since we all know, High School is hell and now everyone thinks the new girl is a slut. She becomes an outcast.A little bit of hope blossoms when she becomes friends with two other new students and regularly goes to a café with them to talk about their problems. After a while, their friendship breaks and not only that, but these two friends actually drag her into their own fight and use her to provoke each other. One of them even pushes her status as a slut just to provoke the other. Her trust has now been broken yet again and she´s alone. Again.Her only safe space now is at home. There she can be herself and no one will bully her for something that was only a lie. But one day, she hears a noise outside of her window and gets scared. To prove if her fear is justified, she asks a seemingly nice girl to help her. They find out that one of their classmates followed Hannah home and took pictures of her in her room when she undressed, when she was just sitting there. And even worse, they caught him masturbating under her window. Her only safe space left has now been taking from her.As if that wouldn´t already be horrible, said “nice girl” now also spreads rumors that Hannah is a slut and it starts to affect her in every way. Guys who show interest in dating her only want her sexually and when she goes to a shop, she´s being sexually harassed. She gets more and more depressed and her parents are gone most times so she doesn´t really have anyone who she can talk to. She loses trust in anyone. Clay tries to be nice to her but she´s so far “gone”, she´s so desperate and lonely that she´s scared of trusting him or of him helping her. She has to listen to her old friend being raped as she hides in a closet out of fear. She has to live with the fact that she couldn´t help her and that a car accident she was involved in caused the death of one of her classmates. She can´t take it anymore, so she changes and hopes someone notices. She wants to reach out, so in a class she anonymously asks the teacher if they could talk about suicide, to see if someone - anyone - would catch on that it´s about her and maybe try and help her because she´s too scared to say it herself. But no one does and even if, she´d never know because one of her classmates, the guy she rejected after he hit on her, took away the notes she had in the little bag every one in her class had to give each other compliments and support. Even the poetry she shares with someone she thinks could be a friend, the poetry that shows her vulnerable side, is published by said friend. So even that little support she could have had was taken from her because the dude was butthurt. She has a mental breakdown in the hallway.Hannah starts to think about suicide and she gets so bad that she doesn´t scream for help when she is raped, she just silently cries. Her last hope is supposed to be her counselor but he pretty much victim blames her and tells her to get over it.So she is alone, depressed and has no safe places anymore. Every little attempt at getting help, at reaching out, has brought her ridicule and rejection. Side B of tape 7 is her last word “Thank you” before she dies after she swallowed pills.Clay, shocked about what he heard, sees another girl at school, an old classmate of his, and recognizes all the changes in her Hannah had just talked about on the tapes and decides to run after her to maybe prevent another suicide from happening.

The message of the book was over all that what you do and what you say to someone can affect someone in a lot of ways and at worst, can even cause a snowball effect. Justin´s rumor about Hannah being a slut was the snowball that caused pretty much everything that happened to her afterwards. The sexual harassment, the voyeurism, Alex involving her in his fight with Jessica. Maybe the only things you can´t blame it for was the car accident everything that was with Bryce. But if that one thing hadn´t happened, Hannah might have been fine. Everything after that took a bit of Hannah´s safety, of her happiness and trust. So she killed herself. 

I got the book when I was eleven. Bad idea because I had my ´till then worst depressive episode and the book didn´t really help with it. But I loved it, so I read it at least once a year. When I got on tumblr, it saddened me that the fanbase for it seemed so small because the book touched me. I could probably still recite the last verse of “Soul Alone”. Now imagine how happy I was when I heard that a book that influenced a major part of my youth would be made into a netflix show and produced by one of my favorite celebrities. They even talked to psychologists and mental health professionals to make it as good and appropriate as possible because they wanted to spread awareness about the danger of suicide and bullying! They wanted to make a show not only about mentally ill teenagers but also for mentally ill teenagers.

When I watched it, the first thing that confused me was the order of the people on the list and that Clay listened to the tapes over a few weeks. The order of the people had a good reason since she talked about it in the order of when it happened. Clay listened to them in one sitting while walking through the town and being confronted with people and settings that affected Hannah. So I wasn´t really happy about the way they went with that.

The second thing that confused - or more, annoyed - me were the characters. Hannah was rude and way more extroverted. I can´t say how many times I rolled my eyes when she “trapped” Justin in that bus and pretty much played with him. Also her entire suicide was played as a revenge act, since you never saw any of her attempts at really reaching out and you never really saw her getting worse. It glorified suicide as an “in your face!” thing for people who hurt you and made her appearance as a ghost in season two seem like suicide was anything but a long-term, definite solution to a short-term problem.Jenny, the blonde girl who caused the accident and I think was even the one encouraging Hannah to go on a date with Zach, was suddenly black and was called Sheri. Tyler was suddenly a victim when he was actually a voyeurist. Zach was a heartthrob when he harassed Hannah and took away her only real support at school because he was butthurt.

But one of the worst character offenses in my opinion was Courtney. Courtney was the girl Hannah asked for help to catch Tyler taking pictures of her at home. Courtney massaged her and later on told everyone Hannah had a bunch of sex toys and used her for her own popularity. She was the last real straw before Hannah got really bad. She had no real description other than “manipulative attention whore who uses people to gain popularity”. What did they make her? An Asian lesbian. They chose to make the worst and most manipulative girl in this entire story a mix of two minorities. Because that´s definitely the kind of representation you´d want as an Asian lesbian in the USA.

Now to the things that really bothered me about the show itself. As a reminder, everyone involved in the show told the media that their goal was to raise awareness about the consequences of bullying and suicide and that they had talked with professionals to make the show as appropriate and accurate as possible. A show for mentally ill teenagers, not only about them.Every psychologist and professional for mental illness will tell you that showing suicide and rape graphically can be extremely triggering for mentally ill people. Especially graphic suicides only invite copy cats. It´s dangerous and harmful to show it this way and everyone with an ounce of experience in psychology will tell you that.

I read the book prior to the release of the show on netflix. I prepared myself for the rape scenes, I prepared myself for Hannah´s mental breakdown, I prepared myself for Hannah swallowing the pills and dying.

What did I get?

I spent the rest of the night rocking myself back and forth scratching my arms because my mind only circled around this scene.

None of these scenes were in the book. Both of these were needlessly added to create shock value and drama. Changing Hannah´s suicide from a drug overdose to her slitting her wrists in a bath tub and bleeding out did not serve any purpose. It was unnecessary and only triggered those who didn´t know it would happen.

“But it has an age rating!”

It´s a show about High School students, specifically mentally ill ones. You really think teenagers won´t watch something about them?

“But it has trigger warnings!”

A usual trigger warning can be for anything from drug abuse to sexual harassment to death. They are so unspecific that the sheer image of Hannah grabbing a bottle of pills and the mention of her suicide could have warranted a trigger warning. It didn´t prepare you for anything. And again, for the book readers it was just a slap in the face because none of us were prepared for this bullshit.

This show doesn´t care about its viewers or about the things they go through. Otherwise they wouldn´t have done this in season one and especially not this “sympathy for the school shooter” bullshit they apparently pull in season two, in a country that on the day the season was released had a school shooting. All they care about is the money.

Then she has an attack, because of course she does, and Chibs rushes to help. When Hotaru’s Definitely Not For Evil necklace doesn’t seem to be working fast enough, Chibi-Usa pulls out the fucking ginzuishou and is like “I CAN DO THAT.” Note it with me, friends: Chibi-Usa figuratively ripped her heart out to help Hotaru. HOTARU DOES NOT YET EVEN KNOW CHIBI-USA’S NAME. Clearly, this is going to become the only part of the manga worth paying attention to.

They talk some about Hotaru’s tragic anime backstory (actually literally this time), while Haruka and Michiru are really creepy and stalkery from the nearby tree. IS THERE SOMETHING ABOUT LESBIANS AND TREES I SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF

It’s getting late when Chibs is on her way home, and as she’s wondering if she should call Usagi or Mamoru for a ride, Haruka and Michiru show up to offer her one.

I don’t put much stock in the manga being very sly about its humour, it’s true, but this is SO PATENTLY RIDICULOUS I genuinely can’t decide if I think it’s supposed to be the joke it very clearly is. I DON’T KNOW ANY MORE THIS IS WHAT’S BEEN DONE TO ME

At the concert, Usagi’s hanging out with the others when she spots Mamoru and Chibi-Usa. The scene actually manages to fold in Usagi’s jealous at Chibi-Usa AND Michiru, and I think at this point it’s just trying to hasten me toward my end.

Meanwhile, Minako is abusing her disguise compact (REMEMBER SHE HAS THAT??) to become a Mugen student (explicitly a male student for no particular reason other than Because Minako) and sneak into Mimete’s concert. She arrives just in time for Mimete to kill everyone, oops. It’s at that point we, for one shining moment, remember what hope was.

HOPE IS MINAKO AINO KICKING ASSHOLE DUDES IN THE FACE

Michiru Senses Something, I guess, and ends the concert early. By just turning and walking off stage and ignoring literally everyone in the audience, which I do admit is the most Michiru way possible. The other Senshi run to help Minako in her fight against Mimete, who in the grandest injustice possible turns out to be tougher than Eudial, and requires Outer Senshi Intervention.

Finally, Neptune and Uranus are revealed! There’s only one thing left to say.

UKEndeavour’s say: The Fosters Episode 1 of Season 5

We’ve made it to season five, wow. I don’t think even the writers thought we would make it here, but here we are. They had to tie up lose-ends from season 04 as well know once again Callie made the world’s stupidest mistake and put her life in danger.

First of all I don’t understand why half of the episode was Gabe and Ana, does anyone actually care about these two? I don’t’ want to watch them. They are unnecessary side stories in an episode that already had a lot going on. We had three main plots going on, the School, Jesus, Brandon and Emma and Stef trying to find Callie. Why the hell did the showrunners think we also needed woe-is-me stories of Gabe and Ana? And why isn’t Ana looking after the child she now has and Gabe get the hell out of Stef and Lena’s garage and sort yourself out. you’re not needed.  

The school story line confuses me, but that’s mainly because I’m from the UK and don’t really under the USA school system, but from what I’ve read and heard the best thing for the school would be to go public. I love that Mariana stood her ground, I also love that Jude came to her rescue with Nick’s evil father tried to break through the line and put his hands Mariana, hasn’t that family done enough harm to that girl, he got pepper sprayed for his trouble but hey, he defended his sister. The Monte/Drew power struggle they are setting up also isn’t something I care about. If they both dropped off the edge the edge of the earth I would be quite happy. Lena wants to stand with the kids and wants what is best for them, not enough of her in this episode.

Jesus’s rage seems to be a theme they are going to put into this season, because of his TBI he will have mood swings. Him destroying Brandon’s things was realistic what I didn’t need was bio daddy to the rescue. If Stef hadn’t been out trying to save Callie she would have done so much better here. but alas that wasn’t to be and we got Gabe, Lena yelling at him was good, she’s frustrated and she’s had enough.

Stef looking for Callie was brilliantly done by Teri Polo, that woman drags you in without you really knowing why. Her walking along those parked cars tapping on the trunks and calling Callie’s name was heart-breaking, and Polo stepped up to the challenge, because that scene could have been so bad. Stef is at the end of the line with Callie and this shows when she finally does find her and they are in the car together. Stef’s emotional words about body bags are right. one day she won’t be able to just drive Callie home.

After an episode with too much Gabe and Ana, and side characters to have a ten second moment of our Mama’s together was insulting. Stef and Lena are the heart of the show, the glue holding that family together. we got a forehead kiss and hug, how this was all.

Overall, not a great start, Joanna Johnson and Peter Paige have said that things start to return to family from episode two onwards and I can only hope this true. I don’t really trust the Promo’s that Freeform put out because they hike up the drama to bring viewers in, which is what they are meant to do. a lot of people gave up on the show last season, Stef and Lena had no plot and it was lacking something, this episode felt just like 04B for me. I just want things to improve. Teri Polo gave me some hope in her Yahoo interview yesterday and I will hold onto that, as I love to find the good in things and I’ve always been hopeful, I will hold onto that.

I’ve always only watched the show for Stef and Lena, I’m not here for the side characters, I came to watch two happy lesbians’ raising their family and loving each other completely. They are the strongest couple on our TV screens right now but they need to be treated like the Queens they are. More screen time, more family time, more alone time and most of all, have plot away from the kids. Which we know is happening with the new neighbours, as one is Tess Brown (she has a new last name) who was the girl that Stef was caught cuddling with on the sofa by Frank.

Animes:

Yuri On Ice!!! - I’m pretty sure everyone’s heard of this by now haha. This is an anime and if you haven’t seen it, you are missing out!! Viktor and Yuuri’s relationship is so beautiful and the creator (Kubo) did such a wonderful job with this show. It’s mainly a figuring skating anime and the show does such a good job with the ice skating, graphics, song choices, and aesthetics. Not only is the main storyline amazing but the relationships between characters are outstanding!

No. 6 - This is like a very underrated version of yuri on ice but without the ice skating. Instead it’s a very action-y, informative, society based. This is also a story where it’s main plot is not the gay couple but what i mentioned previously. The gay relationship is just a bonus. I hope you watch this because it deserves so much attention!

TV Series:

Eyewitness - This is a tv show on usa network (which if you download the app you can watch the show there). This show isn’t necessarily the best scripted show out there but the plotline, and characters are great. It does a good job showing how some kids when first noting that they are gay freak out and how it takes them a while to get used to it. The show in itself is a crime show and so it’s very action based/informative. 

Skam - (I’m putting this here for those who don’t know the show). Skam is a norwegian tv show where each season focuses on a different character. Even though I recommend watching the two previous seasons because they are amazing as well, season three is definitely the best. Season three is in the perspective of Isak, a boy learning to deal with the fact that he might be gay. He meets Even whom he ends up falling in love with and starts to accept that he is gay. The show is amazing! I totally recommend for those who didn’t go watch it! (Season one, Season two, Season three)

Degrassi: First Class - this show is on netflix (i don’t know if there’s another way to watch it sorry). It talks about a lot of the problems and issues that the world is going through (for example, racism, homophobia, sexism etc.) Even though it might be a little cheesy and unrealistic at times, I think it does a pretty decent job. There are two major gay/lesbian couples, Miles and Tristan, and in this new season, Rasha, and Zoe (they are an interracial couple!) 

Movies:

The Way He Looks - (If you have netflix you can watch the full thing but I’ve linked the shortened youtube version.) It is about a blind boy who falls in love with the new student at his school. Everything about this is just so pure and beautiful. If you really enjoyed skam I think you will enjoy this about just as much!

Ahh, like I said I don’t watch too many shows/movies because I’m too busy and I don’t really get the appeal but these are some that I’ve seen and enjoy so sorry that the list is so short! Since i wasn’t sure if you wanted related books/manga/manhwa also included I didn’t add them but if you want them I can definitely tell you what I’m currently reading/have read that are good and heart aching (in a good way, for the most part anyway).

Now that I’ve finished my own comments on omnibus volume 1 of Sweet Blue Flowers, let’s take a look at what other people thought of it. Here’s a not-quite-comprehensive list of reviews of volume 1 that I found online. (I ignored reviews on YouTube since I’m allergic to watching video reviews.) I’ve listed the reviews in rough order based on the prominence of the reviewer and the insightfulness of their comments.

Erica Friedman at Okazu. Friedman is one of the most well-known promoters and reviewers of yuri manga and anime, and hers is the single most authoritative site in English for yuri-related news. She also did previous reviews of volume 1 and volume 2 of the Japanese edition of Sweet Blue Flowers (Aoi Hana), which together cover the material in omnibus volume 1. In this review she rated omnibus volume 1 as 8 out of 10 overall, with art and characters at 8 and story and “yuri” at 7.

Summary: “... although the opening and the ending are—in my opinion —very weak, the rest of the story is excellent. It’s got surprising depth and breadth. Characters that surround Fumi and Akira are as well-developed as they and as interesting. ... This is the version we all wanted. There’s no excuse not to buy it and support the author and folks at the publishing companies that brought it to us!”

My take: Friedman has been a big fan of Sweet Blue Flowers both in manga and anime form, and I think her judgements are generally sound. In particular I agree with her characterization of Sweet Blue Flowers as a modernized “Story A” and “[class] S for a new generation.” I also share her opinion regarding the weakness of the opening, although our reasons may differ slightly. (Based on other reviews I’ve read of hers, the “ending” she’s referring to is the ending of the entire series; I’ll comment on that when the time comes.)

Rose Bridges at Anime News Network. ANN is the most prominent anime news and review site; they also do a fair number of manga reviews. Bridges gave Sweet Blue Flowers an overall B+ grade, with a B for story and an A for art.

Summary: “Overall, this release is an excellent way to dive into a yuri manga that's a cut above the rest. Sweet Blue Flowers still has plenty of its genre’s trappings, but also enough bite for those seeking something more realistic.”

My take: As with Friedman, I basically agree with Bridges’s review, and think she has some useful things to highlight about the work thus far.

Amelia Cook at Otaku USA. Otaku USA is a print and online magazine covering anime and manga; Cook is also the founder of the Anime Feminist web site. Her review is favorable. She particularly calls out the depiction of the four main characters (Akira, Fumi, Yasuko, and Kyoko) as being realistic and nuanced. She rated Sweet Blue Flowers as “recommended”.

Summary: “Sweet Blue Flowers [paints] a picture of everyday life with complicated young women going through important formative experiences. You’ll end the 400-page volume rooting for them all to have a happy ending.”

My take: I found it interesting that Cook’s is the only review I’ve linked to thus far that calls out and (in my opinion, rightly) criticizes the inclusion of the subplot involving Akira’s brother. My only minor (and somewhat self-serving) quibble with Cook’s review is her claim that “The overwhelming impression is that this is yuri predominantly for queer women.” I agree that Shimura did not (and does not) write for the male gaze and goes beyond standard yuri tropes, and thus Sweet Blue Flowers would likely resonate more with queer women than many other yuri works. However I think the publishing history of the manga points toward it being intended for a mixed audience of both women and men, both queer and straight.

Helen at TheOASG. TheOASG is a group anime/manga blog. This is a generally favorable review, albeit with some concerns expressed about the use of yuri tropes, possible queer-baiting, and the reaction by Yasuko’s family to her and Fumi’s relationship being unrealistic. She rated Sweet Blue Flowers at 3 out of 5.

Summary: “Sweet Blue Flowers ... treats its characters as people, not characters created for the reader’s gaze but real teenaged girls dealing with the always overly-complicated world of high school. But it still remains to be seen just how many times these girls have their hearts broken and mended by the time they graduate.”

My take: I can understand Helen’s confusion about exactly what type of story Sweet Blue Flowers is supposed to be: cute schoolgirl yuri or a realistic depiction of a teenaged lesbian? As I’ve written previously, I think that ambiguity is actually deliberate on Shimura’s part. I’ll also note a minor error in the review: she mentions both schools as having active drama clubs, but this is true only of Fujigaya; the club at Matsuoka is in danger of being disbanded.

@livresdechevet at More Bedside Books. A generally favorable review that focuses in particular on translation issues and changes from previous digital releases of volume 1.

Summary: “All in all Sweet Blue Flowers is an enduring series about maturing and girls in love with other girls finally receiving print treatment in English. ... Whether someone is familiar with the genre and history or not it’s a story with characters that can reach out to teenagers as well as older readers.”

My take: Her point regarding the translation of Fumi’s interior thoughts regarding Chizu is a good reminder of the potential pitfalls of interpreting a work solely through a translation of it.

Ash Brown at Experiments in Manga. A generally favorable review that highlights Shimura’s artwork and its relation to theatrical performance, as well as the realism of character actions and interactions.

Summary: “Sweet Blue Flowers is a wonderful series. The manga is emotionally resonate, with a realistic portrayal of the experiences of young women who love other young women. The characterizations and character development in Sweet Blue Flowers in particular are marvelous. ... Sweet Blue Flowers is a relatively quiet story, but the emotional drama is powerful and the manga conveys a compelling sense of authenticity and honesty.”

My take: Brown makes a good point, that Shimura’s relatively simple artwork “is reminiscent of intentionally minimal set design used in some theatrical performances”. I also agree with Brown’s contention that “the characters’ involvement with the play [Wuthering Heights] is an important part of the series both aesthetically and thematically.” I hope to write more about this general point more in the future.

Eric Cline at AIPT. A generally favorable review. Cline liked the characters and how they were handled, and thought the artwork stood out. One criticism he voiced was regarding a lack of clarity in some scenes in terms of who was talking, and where the scenes fit in the overall timeline. He also questions the exact relevance of one character (apparently Kyoko) to the story.

Summary: “Overall, Sweet Blue Flowers Vol. 1 is a solid start for the series. The characters are likable and well introduced, and the artwork throughout is beautiful. With that said, none of the volume’s more emotional moments are very memorably so. This is a volume that shows promise and generates enough interest to warrant giving the next installment a look, but it doesn’t quite reach greatness as is. I would recommend it, but not enthusiastically so.”

My take: Cline is spot-on about Shimura’s narrative sometimes being difficult to follow; she often makes scene transitions without warning between two panels on the same page. I also agree with Cline about the limited emotional impact of some moments; I think this is a combination of our having spent limited time with the characters thus far, the somewhat artificial and schematic nature of Sweet Blue Flowers as an homage to and critique of the class S and yuri genres, and Shimura’s occasional tendency to emotional distancing in her story-telling. As for Kyoko, I think she is and likely will be a key character in the story.

Ruthsic at YA on My Mind (also at Krutula at GoodReads). An overall favorable review that highlights the art, characters, and good handling of lesbian themes. She rates it 4 stars out of 5.

Summary: “Overall, a manga I am really looking forward to read more of. (There’s also an anime of it, and I am so going to watch it!)”

My take: She makes a good point about the setting of Sweet Blue Flowers being “contemporary, but without the homophobia”, presumably in service to this being a “feel good” story as opposed to a truly realistic one.

Sean Gaffney at A Case Suitable for Treatment. A favorable review from a manga-focused site. He acknowledges that the long delay in bringing out a complete official translation of Sweet Blue Flowers makes it seem less distinctive compared to more recent works like Bloom Into You or Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl.

Summary: “Sweet Blue Flowers is absolutely worth reading and checking out, both if you like yuri and if you like Takako Shimura. It’s also only four omnibuses, so shouldn’t devastate your bookshelf too much.”

Alexandra Nutting (writing as EyeSpyeAlex) at The Geekly Grind. A favorable review on a site focused on anime, manga, and video games.

Summary: “At the end of the day, I really enjoy Sweet Blue Flowers. The characters feel real and have a depth and complexity to their lives. While the visuals could be a little more striking, it fits the down to earth tone of the manga.”

My take: The reviewer praises Sweet Blue Flowers for its “authenticity”, and notes that it is melodramatic but not overly so. I think this is about right.

Leroy Douresseaux at ComicBookBin. A favorable review (score 8 out of 10) on a general comics site.

Summary: “Fans of yuri and shojo romance will want to smell the Sweet Blue Flowers.”

My take: A fairly brief and vanilla review, though it does make an interesting point about the confusion due to the number of characters and their different feelings evoking the state of confusion the characters find themselves in.

And one final “not really a review” item:

Rachel Thorn at Twitter. Thorn asked for opinions on Sweet Blue Flowers, apparently for an article she’s writing on Takako Shimura’s work. (Thorn announced separately that she’s completed the article, but hasn’t announced when or where it will be published, or whether it’s in English or Japanese. However from something Erica Friedman wrote elsewhere I believe it may be intended for the Japanese magazine Eureka.) Warning: Some of the replies have mild spoilers for the end of the manga.
