Exhibit... U, probably, of me forgetting that some things don't actually go without saying for the uninitiated - it's indeed mid-engined!
Tumblr media
Its powertrain was used in front wheel drive, front-engined cars, so literally all the engineers had to do was just... mount it there instead of in the front. Which means the front was free to have a trunk - if you will, a frunk (actual colloquial term of frequent use)!
Tumblr media
But since the engine was in front of the rear wheels, the space behind them was free to have a trunk as well!

Both small, but hey, who's complaining!

TIR the first generation MR2 only has the vent on the right hand side.

(ZOMG the sun visor for the rear windshield reflects its Toyota logo onto it!!! How clever!)
Fun fact for y'all, that trend was followed by possibly the most iconic aftermarket part for the following generation of MR2: the TOM'S scoop.

Fun facts about this scoop: 1. It requires a special airbox that repositions the engine's intake in the path of its airflow, because otherwise all it does is mess up the factory aerodynamics which have the (now symmetrical!) side vents flow air through the engine bay and out from the hood vents 2. It fucks SO HARD

They are in my heart.

I have followed skater turned photo/videographer Neil Sheehan's madly thorough rebuild of the AE86 Trueno you see behind him for years and years (however, it took so long that years and years were not enough, so now I have a bunch of installments to catch up on to enjoy its completion). And it is always a treat! His channel, Juiceboxforyou, is a mix of off-the-charts Boys Will Be Boys energy and fascinating deep dives into car culture in Japan and Ireland and how they intersect narrated with contagious reverent excitement.
Check out the first episode for a sample of the former! That is, if you're groovy with a slab of foul language almost as thick as the Irish accents.
