When I see footage of him live, I just think, ‘He’s unbeatable.’ Kurt Cobain, just his face alone was, like, enough. He didn’t even have to sing, his presence was scary, sick. Elvis, Frank — and Bob Dylan.”

“It was an exciting time and, making the record I thought... it’s not that I wanted anything to be larger than life, I just thought, ‘Well, here I am, I’m on my way to not having to do anything else in life.’

And to have absolutely no reaction, and no recognition, and no nothing, after you make a record that you think is perfect, you definitely start to think, ‘Well, good try, but you’d better go find something else to do that works.’ Because, if you keep chasing something that isn’t working, you’ll drive yourself insane.”

“Glitter…?” That terrified feeling was returning, and swiftly.

I rubbed my temples as a headache started just from imagining what this was going to look like. She’s an artist, it will work. She’ll make it work, I know she will. “I put the Festival in your hands, you can do whatever you want except cancel it.”

“Just give Tyche a heads up so she can plan good costumes for you and the guys,” Hannah reassured, enthusiasm ignited at the idea of truly making the event their own.

The frown on my face actually gave me a cramp. “Why does someone else get to plan our costumes?”

“Because you wear really nice scrubs every day,” she pointed out without looking up.

“They’re comfy! But I’ll have you know I actually do know how to put together a costume, much less an outfit.”

Both of them eyed me skeptically, provoking a sigh of exasperation. “I am going to show you two, and you are both going to eat your words. The crowd lights up under her delivery; the Vogue's elegant interior is now a thin backdrop for “Grasshopper,” the opening song. Tkay’s delivery is punchy, raunchy, and passionate. Despite working with a fully-seated show, the audience is fully engaged from the vigorously dreamy R&B harmonies in “24k,” to the eerie beauty of crowd favourite “Where is My Mind?,” a cover of the popular Pixies song.

After an intermission, the stage is set for Emotional Oranges. Their silhouettes are lit by a bright orange spotlight that warms the room like a sensual sunset—and acts as an important tool in disguising both performers’ identities. Said to be the pairing of Adele’s vocal coach and Drake’s sound engineer, Emotional Oranges swathes the audience on a love-induced magic carpet ride of smooth tunes.

Each song is accompanied by brilliant art direction. Looped retro clips or cheeky typography are projected through each song, especially enhancing the opening song from their 2019 album The Juice: Vol. I, “Motion.” Although never a confirmed couple, the pair’s effortless chemistry transfixes the crowd as they push, flirt, and pull away from each other to match the narrative of the song. Their delivery is electric, taking an already captivated audience and crooning sweet nothings about love and heartbreak coated in sugar-sweet vocals from V and deep lurid tones from A.

There are two highlights of the show. The first is “Your Best Friend is a Hater” from The Juice: Vol. II. While they call out the chorus of the song, A and V split the crowd into men and women to call the chorus back to them louder than the opposition in a sing-battle. This is a nice change from the slow, swanky beats prior. Suddenly, the audience is whisked into a different fantasy narrative of two perspectives on a night out.

The next highlight marks another shift in energy – something the duo does very well. Following groovy R&B beats on one instance, V tells the audience the next song is a good one because it always makes her cry. The song is “Corners of My Mind,” a painful ode to the end of love. The propulsive beat is accompanied by a slow guitar and lyrics that outline the pining of two broken hearts.

The concert ends with crowd favourite “West Coast Love,” a nostalgic blend of 90’s R&B slathered with a groovy snare and warm harmonies. It is a perfect closer, with the audience dancing the entire time. As mysteriously as they entered, the pair makes a quick-but-cool exit, leaving the crowd drooling for more.

Once again I scrape my way back to the internet, this time refreshed after getting to spend the weekend with @momosandlemonsoda and our third partner in crime, just the three of us in person for the first time in, uh, literal years. Like…2014? Maybe? Never mind that they live in my phone every day, there’s nothing quite like in-person hangs.

And, you know, the two of us tag-team-yelling the plot of the arranged marriage!au at our most patient friend, who has watched at least part of “the tomb show with the ninja and the married couple.” Turns out talking through plot points in person is immensely helpful! The master spreadsheet has! been! updated!

Anyway. No fic ready as of yet, but I am delighted to share the cocktail of the weekend, making use of perfectly in-season peaches and *absolutely* on-brand for Club Moonlight. True, it was me mixing and muddling in my daytime jammies, as opposed to a Brylcreamed bartender attempting to grow a handlebar mustache while sporting skinny leather suspenders over a shirt with arm garters, but it is the right level of fussy, vaguely retro, and ~seasonal~. It’s called the Tabernacle Crush.

Makes one drink

1/2 peach, sliced

6 small basil leaves, plus garnish

1/2 oz fresh lemon juice

1 1/2 oz gin

1 oz Lillet

1/2 oz simple syrup

Ice

Club soda

Muddle peach and basil until the peach gives up its juice and you can smell the basil from a distance. Add the lemon juice, gin, Lillet, and simple syrup; stir vigorously. Add ice and top with club soda.

(Notes: ideally the peach is juicy that you have to slice it over the glass to not lose any of the juice as it runs over your fingers and the knife. A traditional gin does better than one that isn’t juniper-based. You can use lime juice instead of lemon, and I may actually like it better that way. You can also experiment with bitter liqueurs, not just Lillet. Cynar and Amer Cocchi also work very well, though I’d give the nose to Cocchi. Any liquid sweetener works: stevia, simple syrup, etc, and you can always make it sweeter to taste. I prefer not-sweet drinks, but you really need a little something to round out the flavors. I wouldn’t go less than a quarter ounce of sweetener. Also, you want enough club soda to smooth things out but not drown it entirely. It says “top off with,” but that depends on the size of your glass. I wouldn’t use more than 6oz of club soda, probably closer to 4, max. The leftover muddled peaches and basil are good over ice cream or in champagne.)

 COVID-19(SARS COV 2), a member of the corona virus family, Coronaviridae, and a linked relative to the original SARS- COV, is an airborne pathenogenic retro virus; “Coronaviruses (CoVs), enveloped positive-sense RNA viruses, are characterized by club-like spikes that project from their surface, an unusually large RNA genome” (Fehr, Perlman et. al. 2015)(WHO, 2020). While airborne transmission is the open cause and primary cause noted it may not explain the mechanism in full; “Human-to-human transmission is primarily achieved through close contact of respiratory droplets, direct contact with the infected individuals, or by contact with contaminated objects and surfaces”(Malik Ya, 2020).  COVID-19 is named this due to it’s Chinese origin and the year it was isolated but it’s legitimized name in virology is SARS COV 2(WHO, 2020). It functions as a primary pathogenetic virus that effects immune response and becomes more damaging in the presence of a secondary pathogen (such as bacteria that cause pneumonia), or in immunocompromised subjects (Zheng et. al. 2020) (Leng et. al. 2020). It functions by causing irritation, over production of mucus, and inflammation in direct correlation to infection of specific cell tissues in the upper lower respiratory tract, “mainly invades alveolar epithelial cells” (Zheng et. al. 2020). The mode of infection mechanisms works by targeting specific cells in the respiratory tract that are ACE2 heavy, progenitor cells that may be peripheral primordia or end up elongating into cilia cells that clean debris from lungs(WHO, 2020)(Zheng et. al. 2020). Other specified areas of respiratory periphery cells responsible to upkeep that can also have serious detrimental effects after infection are found in the bronchii; “bronchial transient secretory cells” (Lukassen et. al. 2020).  “ACE2 is the main host cell receptor of 2019 CoV and plays a crucial role in the entry of virus into the cell to cause the final infection” ( Xu. et. al. 2020). “Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a membrane-bound aminopeptidase that has a vital role in the cardiovascular and immune systems” (Zheng et. al. 2020). COVID-19 opperates specifically systematically binding a part of the primary antigen spike protein of the virus to ACE2 and entering the tissues present, which are mainly in the lungs and cardiovascular system (Zheng et. al. 2020).

 ACE 2 mechanisms function as receiving the spike protein of Sars Cov 2, SARS-S,  and then binding, a second signaling event and conformational change event for cell access of the virus occurs from protein cleavage/priming of a protease(Hirano and Mirikami 2020). Transmembrane acceptance protein protease or specifically, “Type II transmembrane serine proteases TMPRSS2 and HAT can cleave and activate the spike protein (S) of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) for membrane fusion” (Huerich et. al. 2013). This is done by opening up the antigen embedded in the viral lipid membrane and by opening up ACE2, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, in similar fashion of the host cell membrane (Huerich et. al. 2013)( Hirano and Mirikami 2020). Because of this feature, it is also potentially of interest to study specific protease inhibitors to manage treatment, “A TMPRSS2 inhibitor approved for clinical use blocked entry and might constitute a treatment option” ( Hirano and Mirikami). Once inside, a COV follows a set of criteria for self-preservation: Conserve genomic organization “with a large replicase gene preceding structural and accessory genes … expression of many non-structural genes by ribosomal frameshifting;… utilize several unique or unusual enzymatic activities encoded within the large replicase–transcriptase polyprotein; and utilize expression of downstream genes by synthesis of 3′ nested sub-genomic mRNAs”(Fehr and Perlman et. al. 2015).

-H-COV integration, and with this specific case in mind, is derived from the RNA in the capsule; “within the helically symmetrical nucleocapsid is the large positive sense, single stranded RNA” where RNA is ejected via motor protein into the cellular matrix of cytoplasm( Malik Ya, 2020). After insertion RNA replication and translation needs to occur on a vast scale before lysing and eruption into mucus can occur properly (Malik Ya, 2020).

“Translation of the replicase gene from the virion genomic RNA and then translation and assembly of the viral replicase complexes is done first; following, replication and subgenomic RNA synthesis, encapsidation occurs resulting in the formation of the mature virus”(Malik Ya, 2020). The “nested” three prime end of the viral RNA contains critical coding information for this all to proceed (Malik Ya, 2020)(Fehr and Perlman et. al. 2015). The major structural proteins are noted as such: “the spike (S), membrane (M), envelope (E) and the nucleocapsid (N) protein” (Malik Ya, 2020).  Clarity on the other structural proteins mentioned besides the S protein mentioned above can also be found in Dr. Malik Ya’s review:

“The M protein is the most abundant protein and defines the shape of the viral envelope. The E protein is the smallest of the major structural proteins and participates in viral assembly and budding. The N protein is the only one that binds to the RNA genome and is also involved in viral assembly and budding…”

Once this virus takes out these cells, other infections make use of the issues caused by a lack of lung up keep and excess mucus: Pneumonia is a secondary infection that seems to be one of the more detrimental for example (Lukassen et. al. 2020) (WHO, 2020) (Zheng et. al. 2020). This seems to be why the virus is so deadly, easily expressed, and transported from human-human with such vigor. This is also why a stay at home order, cleanliness, and social distancing is very critical(WHO, 2020).

 COVID-19 can be testable in several ways, for rapid test examples, kits for ELISA, and other fast antigen tests are used frequently. Although ELISA tests can show the presence of COV-19 if a patient is in symptomatic stages as a confirmation, the issue lies in the fact that a patient may not contain anti-bodies in their serum for up to ~2 weeks or a week and a half, that are antigen specific (BIORAD, 2020). This usually is not a problem since symptoms arise within the first two weeks; but, in early testing scenarios this is problematic as there might be potential for a false negative. ELISA’s are incredibly fast though and extremely simple to train for and preform for newer medical professionals or volunteers. ELISA well sterility and cleaning procedures is also very critical to mitigate the likely hood of a false positive color change from previous contamination (BIORAD, 2020). Another rapid test is COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid Test; “ is a solid phase immunochromatographic assay used in the rapid, qualitative and differential detection of IgG and IgM antibodies to the 2019 novel coronavirus in human whole blood, serum or plasma” (AYTU BIOSCI, 2020). This test is another 2-10 minute rapid test; but is considerably more complex and also requires antigen to be present in serum(AYTU BIOSCI, 2020).

With RT-PCR(Reverse Transcriptase, Polymerase Chain Reaction), it is much safer to fully commit on analysis if swabs are done properly. RT-PCR does not use antigen recognition instead, “RNA molecules are first converted into complementary DNA (cDNA) molecules that can then be amplified by PCR” and conserved targeting sequences(J.L. Jones, 2015). Viruses present in mucus swabs are critical in providing a positive or negative result, swabs from elsewhere with no respiratory mucus present may cause false negatives. These tests can detect influenza viral RNA or nucleic acids in respiratory specimens with high sensitivity and high specificity(conserved gene targets) in 20-30 minutes (CDC, 2019). Following directions for transport of specimen, swab type, and other procedure is critical for real results( CDC,2019).  If viruses aren’t being shed, sometimes not enough may be present before symptoms, this test may also create false negatives (CDC, 2019). Another clear fall through with RT- PCR is availability of devices and kits capable of RT-PCR and expenses when compared to the accessibility of other assay(CDC, 2019). In this way, they each server their purpose as being fast, and accessible or being more accurate and still relatively quick. I say relatively because older RT-PCR systems can take multiple days to finish( J. L. Jones, 2015).

DEMO RIDE: 2019 Husqvarna Svartpilen & Vitpilen 401/701

Size does matter, and in this case, smaller is better.

It’s no secret that Husqvarna’s dirt bikes and dual sports sell themselves. Touting a storied motocross/scramble history, it’s easy to see why the off-roaders are so popular with the public. On the other hand, the company hasn’t seen much success with its street-oriented lineup. With 2019s still occupying the showroom floor and the pressure of Q3 looming, Husky recently visited Azusa, California to jumpstart the sales of their Svartpilen & Vitpilen lines. Labeled the Real Street tour, the series of demo events featured both models in their 401 & 701 variations, casting a veritable spotlight on their often overlooked street bikes. 

But the Svartpilen & Vitpilen aren’t afraid of the spotlight, you could even say they were crafted to bask in it. The first thing you’ll notice when you gaze at the Svartpilen & Vitpilen is the unconventional design. It’s not a stretch to say that the aesthetics of the lineup resemble something out of a Scandinavian furniture catalog. With minimal, flowing lines, the Svartpilen & Vitpilen would feel right at home with your Poäng and Klippan. 

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the neo-retro style aims directly at a younger, urban demographic that gravitate toward classic, simplistic forms with a utilitarian edge. Whether you fancy the looks of the bikes or not, you have to admit that the fit and finish is quite impressive. However, I do feel the designers tragically overlooked the speedometer, as its more akin to a gym teacher’s stopwatch than a proper gauge. Not to mention, the highly reflective glass and mounting angle make render the information illegible. Aside from the hideous - and quite useless - instrument cluster, the Svartpilen & Vitpilen reek of smart sophistication.  

But I can see how that elevated design could be a barrier for potential buyers. Due to the refined, “Swedish” aesthetics, one could quickly distinguish these models from their intra-brand cousins, KTM’s Duke and Enduro. With hopes that the public will embrace these models the same vigor as they’ve taken to KTM’s lineups, Husky is just trying to get more booties in the saddle, and I’m more than happy to oblige. 

Sharing the motor of KTM’s 390 Duke and 690 Enduro R, Husky’s Svartpilen & Vitpilens benefit from two well-tested mills. Both engines push the boundaries of power that a single-cylinder engine should produce. Despite the lack of pistons to share the load, the vibrations on the 401 & 701 aren’t excessive (take that assessment with a grain of salt - I ride a Harley). 

While the 701 delivers its power in a smooth, linear fashion, I found myself smitten with the 401′s punchiness. Glancing at the spec sheet, I noticed that the 701 reaches peak torque of 53 ft-lb @ 6,750 rpm with 75 hp topping out @ 8,500 rpm. Comparatively, the 401′s max torque (27 ft-lb) hits @ 6,800 rpm and horsepower (42 hp) @ 8,600 rpm. With about half the power and three-quarters of the weight of the 701, the 401 shouldn’t feel nearly as torquey. Additionally, both motors achieve max torque and horsepower at practically identical rpms, leaving me perplexed with my preference for the 401 - aside from the butt dyno. 

No, I can’t support my fondness of the little thumper with cold hard data, but I can attest that the majority of the riders attending the demo agreed. I know anecdotal evidence is the least persuasive argument, but the 401 simply felt like a more agile from side-to-side and provided great acceleration in short bursts. And I may be rationalizing here, but those darting characteristics seemed appropriate for two models that translate to white arrow (Vitpilen) and black arrow (Svartpilen). The 701s weren’t bad motorcycles in the least, they just didn’t imbue the same excitement as they’re diminutive counterparts. Size does matter, and in this case, smaller is better. 

But the size variation didn’t stop at the engine. The differing braking systems on the bikes occupied two different build quality standards. Even with the 401′s “budget” brakes, both systems felt well-suited for their classes with adial-mounted Brembo clampers blessing the 701s and ByBre calipers getting the job done on the 401s. 

Despite the fact that both models lack dual-discs, the calipers delivered a reassuring bite while riding in urban environments. Yes, an extra rotor and caliper up front would certainly push the models in a more performance direction but we didn’t take the Svartpilen or Vitpilen into the twisties and the stock brakes would suffice where most buyers would ride these bikes - in the city.

When judging the two models on ergonomics, I kept their natural habitat - urban environments - in mind, as both maintain a fairly sporty position. Starting with the Vitpilen, I immediately noticed the aggressive, forward-leaning stance. Positioning my head directly over the front wheel, the Vitpilen made me want to slalom through mid-day traffic at full throttle. However, that state of mind prooved more enslaving than freeing. After all, I was on a demo tour. If “it’s better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow,” nothing is worse than living that platitude in reverse. If you’re looking for a nimble, aggressive, lane-splitter, the Vitpilen has you covered, but make sure your journey is manageable, as I already felt the tension in my wrists by the time we returned from the short ride.

On the other hand, the Svartpilen utilizes high-rise bars to position the rider at ease. From the upright posture, I was content to stay in line and putt along at a legally acceptable speed. Sure, I tugged on the throttle from time to time, but the relaxed stance felt more conducive to congested road conditions. If the Vitpilen’s ergonomics equate to a Supersport, the Svartpilen would be it’s Naked/Standard counterpart. Both bikes are aimed at city-dwellers and while it would be a stretch to say that either of them let you stretch your legs out, neither of them feel cramped. Though I’d probably opt for the Svartpilen in most situations, if I were visiting one of the local canyons (GMR, HWY 39, etc), I’d certainly side with the Vitpilen.

While the ergonomics shift the rider into different postures - and different states of mind - the road manners of the bikes are quite similar. With all models under 6 inches of travel, I could easily flat-foot each bike. Despite its smaller stature, the 401s benefited from the same WP 43mm inverted forks that graced the front end of the 701s. On the road, each bike was compliant and responded immediately to my every input. Particularly, the Vitpilen - with its clip-ons and head-down posture - reacted to every adjustment of my body. 

Not only did the suspension allow the bikes to cut from side-to-side, it also made the 401s and 701s feel planted. From soaking up potholes to providing stable steering at speed, KTM’s proprietary suspenders highlighted how fun these machines can be. On the contrary, the lack of suspension travel on the Svartpilen did beg the question: couldn’t this model be much more fun? Aside from ergonomics and a few bits of design (paint mainly), how does the Svarpilen distinguish itself from the Vitpilen? 

And that’s where I got to thinking about the lack of sales for these two models. After taking everything into consideration, it seems like Husqvarna’s “Real Street” motorcycles are going through an identity crisis. Are these bikes retro or performance? Can you consider a motorcycle “premium” (as the price would suggest) the dash looks more like a digital alarm clock and it doesn’t come with dual-disc brakes? But maybe it’s less of an identity crisis and more of a false identity. For instance, Husqvarna outfits the Svartpilen with dirt tracker styling yet they can’t endorse taking the low slung machine off-road. Even with the aesthetic hinting at dirt-capabilities, the Svartpilen is essentially a naked bike with knobbies. 

Broadcasting a false image can ensnare potential buyers - or it can turn them off (like it did for me). Intoxicated by the snappy acceleration of the 401, I actually looked into purchasing a Svartpilen following the demo. But the lack of off-road capability soon soured my initial enthusiasm. If it can’t hang in the brown, why outfit it with Pirelli Scorpions? Why adopt tracker design cues? What’s the point of making form decision if it’s contrary to the function? That disillusionment made me look at the Svartpilen & Vitpilen differently. 

With an MSRP of $6,299 for the 401 and $11,999 for the 701, it’s easy to see why the KTM-owned brand is having problems moving units. Coupled with the unconventional design (which I actually love but can understand how some wouldn’t), Husqvarna has it’s work cut out. Along with the lackluster sales figures of the Svartpilen & Vitpilen, the Real Street Demo stop in Azusa failed to highlight the full capabilities of models. With the near highway miles away, riders were relegated to a jaunt around the block. As a result, I never got the gearbox past 3rd and that doesn’t instill much confidence in potential customers. The combination of disorganization, bikes-to-rider ratio, wait times, and early wrap-up, I’d venture to say that the demo barely moved the needle on these two bikes.

With all that said, if you’re looking for a stylish motorcycle to ride in the city, Husky’s street lineup may be a good option. The brand continues to promote their 0% APR (up to 48 months), so you may score a new Svartpilen or Vitpilen for a great price. For my intents, the bikes are too niche in design and too specialized in purpose, but that doesn’t mean they won’t work for you. I guess the best advice I can give to potential buyers is to test ride as many motorcycles as possible. I know I will be!

To no one’s surprise, Kim Kibum is high.

No! Not that kind of high--Kibum may be an advocate for living on the edge, but jail was, well, a little much-- but the legal kind of high. Doped up on caffeine and last night’s escapades; slurping his weight in caffeine in hopes of staying lucid enough to remember the choreo to their retro hit, the lyrics, his name, and as of present- to answer the interviewers questions with much vigor. Caffeine has always been his primary lover during the skip of schedules, but as of late Kibum and his beaus relationship had become rather toxic--Romeo and Juliet toxic. He couldn’t mull through the day without 3 square meals catered around an Americano and yea- it’s unhealthy, but the results were really really good. And so far, he’s proud of himself for every broadcast had been spot on and every interview fluid enough to create more buzz than his self administered half-hawk during Lucifer era. What a time to be alive!

The clock ticks to the tune of the incoming  hour--9AM-- and quite frankly Kibum feels like he’s going to die. Lethargy riddled feline eyes, curling svelte finger tips loose around the girth of a Styrofoam cup--Styrofoam, despite having ordered an iced Americanofor kicks--it’s half empty when he so desperately needed it to be half full. Fingers are wrapping tentatively around the girth of  a Styrofoam cup, contents half empty when he needed it to be half full. His manager seems to read his mind, read between the lines of thin,  lowered, apprehensive eyes that say Kibum won’t make it to the hour without a refill of the legal drug, because he’s swift in getting the idol a refill before the interviewer arrives.

The first question is light -- is easy. Interviews are easy. Easy as pie.

Maybe because the art of conversation was something he had mastered a long time ago, but only now able to showcase to a large audience via this comeback allotting him with a rather surplus of solo interviews-more than he expected, honestly. His members (take away Taemin, add OnJongHo) were just as good as he when it came to answering questions. Each member cool calm and concise, so much so that Kibum could easily blend into the unmarked cafe’s puke-colored interior(really.

“Because SHINee is a contemporary band, we strive to create new trends and rework old ones.”  The word ‘contemporary’ is emphasized, a quality of the quintet that Kibum equally loved to drive home and be apart of.

“In addition, our concept this comeback is a ‘retro’ pop song with new jack swing elements where we reinterpret specific elements of that era, but in a very SHINee way. And while many other artist have pursued a ‘retro’ concept  spanning from the 80s to late 90s, we wanted to do so in a new and distinct characteristics. Hence why we released a limited edition cassette version and filmed the MV in a way that’s the very embodiment of the era down to the editing.” His fondness of his group shones through a show of pearly whites, the kind he’s oh-so conscious of because the back of his hand presses to it before allowing him to continue. “As SHINee, we’ve always strive to fully incorporate details within our concept. For example, many may not notice, but  the jewelry we wore are actual relics from the 90s. I even utilized some of my own wardrobe during shooting. When we chose the concept, we met with our staff numerous time to decide if ‘1of1′ was a concept we should try. Although we ultimately chose it, we knew how dangerous this choice was, so we are really happy to see everyone enjoying it so much.”

These days he feels very much like SHINee’s PR person. Ever since the word got out that he played a hand in their last concert’s direction and costumes, interviewers always approached him about SHINee with much more interest- as if he were... vital to SHINee’s conception. In an afterthought, he adds, “In the future I want to create fun music that is public friendly but unique as well.”

And then modesty takes hold of his features, embedded so deep within his countenance that not even the humbled smile that’s stretched around his teeth can hide it. This was... different. Sure he had just concisely outlined the quintet’s mission and concept- but he had done so as 5, speaking for all 5 of them, not just himself. Speaking for his group was autonomous by now but speaking on his solo activities and achievements (ones that were miles different from SHINee ones), though, were a different story; he was still getting use to it. A fairy tale as Kibum was but an oyster revealing his pearl to the public and hoping not to get it stolen.

“In Drinking Solo, I play a  charismatic character named ‘Kim Kibum’ just like me! Anyways, he’s a 9th grade civil servant examinee who takes life one step at a time. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth so obviously he prefers the finer things in life--finer things like his penchant for luxury tracksuits that he finances with his mother’s credit card.Thinks a noyangjin Paris Hilton.” The interviewer must have been thinking ‘that sounds just like you’, but she doesn’t interject, instead lets him finish- something Kibum appreciates.

“From the beginning I wanted to make the character I portray as realistic as possible. When I began acting in musicals I learned that embodying the character in a convincing way is just as important as portraying that character. I think the more realistic a character is, the more relate able they will be. And that’s what I want to show- a relate able character that reminds viewers of someone around them.” Ironic he says so, since the character was written with himself in mind. Ironic that he could get away with portraying himself--because the character is him after all-- he goes the extra mile to let fictional Kim Kibum live.

“ An example of me embodying my character is cutting my bangs into choppy layers, this makes Drinking Solo’s Kim Kibum memorable and also gives off the feeling that although he thinks he’s trendy--others don’t agree. On  a side note, many of my friends teased at this choppy bangs style, so I think it worked? On top of that, the writer wanted to drive home how ‘trendy’ he was and wanted me to act the part by wearing a Gucci tracksuit. But that’s unrealistic, right? A truly fashionable person wouldn’t just change outfits regardless of the situation just because they can, they might wear several Adidas tracksuits instead.” He would know. He’s a truly fashionable person, right?

“Drinking Solo’s Kim Kibum wasn’t originally suppose to speak with satoori at first, but I really really wanted to be able to act in this accent  because I felt that it fit the character, I couldn’t see him not speaking satoori. So when I went to script reading I provided two versions of my lines, one in standard accent and the other with satoori. Luckily, the writer thoroughly enjoyed my alternate script and had me translate the others.” The thought has him beaming, more so because his screen debut had been heavily praised, a feat that didn’t accompany most idol turned actor until their fifth year if ever. And ontop of that- he debuted with a character inspired by himself and was able to tweak his speaking pattern.

“Um. I, uh. Can’t say much about our other similarities without ruing future episodes, but aside from speaking in satoori and being close to our late Grandmothers...”  A pause. Not awkward. But not comfortable either. Feline eyes are suddenly fluttering to the pen she uses to scribble down pieces of his winded answer. He silently wonders if she’s new, because she hardly ever seeks eye contact with him, shys away from it even.

“I feel as if he and I are more alike when I’m not working- in that I’m rather impulsive and do things without thinking. The script writer actually wrote him with me in mind, ha!” Her nod is expected and it comes as a gracefully bob of the head as if to say ‘I can tell’ and while he’s grateful for having a script writer think of him (can you believe it?) when crafting up a character, the drama hasn’t ended. The drama hadn’t shown fictional Kim Kibum’s inner layers, hadn’t show him vulnerable in his entirety. She has the wrong impression of him. Everyone does. And he forgives it. “There’s so much more that  ‘Drinking Solo’s’ Kibum has to show so please anticipate him!”

Ihsahn - Ámr

Ihsahn, the philosophically inclined Emperor frontman has been gradually turning his focus toward progressive metal with just a foot in black metal since dedicating himself to his solo career. His seventh solo studio album here follows 2016's Arktis., in which he continued to add to the progressive aspect of the sound on which he has based his solo career. Ámr is very much a natural progression from Arktis., but a less consistent outing ultimately.

Where the album stumbles is usually in the compositional department, with a few songs just not crafted to Ihsahn's or prog metal's strengths. The songs "Sámr" and "Twin Black Angels" are weaker monents on the album for their deadpan performance and basic structures that make them pretty avoidably dull moments on the album. I like the gradual integration of the strings on "Sámr", but its choruses especially remind me of Opeth's less thrilling retro-prog indulgence of late. "Twin Black Angels", though, sounds like a less attentive Devin Townsend rock tune, and not a flattering angle for Ihsahn. Though not as sleepily delivered, "Where You Are Lost and I Belong" is another lower energy song, and despite its cool percussion section, it kind of drags on not going anywhere. It's a song that kind of shows the variety of Ihsahn's clean vocal styles, and which ones aren't all that powerful. I'll say it does end on a good note though.

A greater portion of the album does follow through on Ihsahn's goal of black metal-infused prog though. "Arcana Imperii" is probably the most well-constructed balance of prog theatrics and blood-pumping metal riffage on the album and possibly in Ihsahn's solo career. The binary synth backing melody of "Lend Me the Eyes of Millennia" sets a sufficiently dark tone for the song that blast beats and growled vocals follow up on quite nicely. The gothic and black metal track "One Less Enemy" and the absolutely ripping downtuned "Marble Soul" are the indulgent riffers on the album and their proper execution comes as no surprise, but quite welcome, and certainly with melodic and progressive merit as well. "In Rites of Passage" is also one of the heavier prog tracks on the album, but is ultimately a bit more clunky than proggy, though its Tool-esque passage at the end does a good job in its transition back into the song's heavier riff. The closing track, "Wake" opts for quick, vigorous blast beating during it's verses and a cool Petrucci-ish solo during the bridge, but the vocal melody on which the chorus stands is some shaker musical ground, not for its accidentals but its less than exciting delivery of a long string of quarter notes.

Even though Ámr is not a significant step up or down from Arktis., its consistency within Ihsahn's solo discography continues his path down this road of semi-gothic, blackened prog and further establishes his dominance on this sound he's investing in. Most of the album's significance is within the context of Ihsahn's lore as an additive of the sum of his artistic works, and less on its standalone impact on his career or the style.

And it feels even more "right" on a laptop than a hulking desktop.It's a Valve game and, like most Valve titles, fares incredibly well on lower-end hardware.
