Showrunner Duane Capizzi did an informal Q&A session with some fans in a CS chatroom. There are several question askers, all marked by name. Get some insider knowledge on the show, after the break!
Duane Capizzi:
Just checking things out! Feel like I'm poking my head through a door at a party I'm crashing haha.
Fun to see everyone hanging out and talking all good things Carmen
Can't stay long - I should have taken the code name "Crimson Phantom"
Crimson Phantom - I like the sound of that (if it's not already taken haha)
Carmen:
It's an awesome nickname! Personally I'm more of a Scarlet Santa Rosa person myself- I love that little interaction with Jules and Carmen in the special
Duane Capizzi:
Scarlet Santa Rosa! Yes, that was really cute between them. Too cute in fact.
Coach Brunt had some names for her too if i recollect
Arden:
Lambkins
Wren:
Didn't Brunt also call her Monica Santa Monica once?
Mage:
Yeah in the Boston episode
Also Josie San Jose
Arden:
I personally prefer Fedora the Explora
Duane Capizzi:
Josie yes hahaha
I can't believe we got away with Fedora the Explorer! I thought that would be noted but I'm glad we did. So funny!
Carmen is amazing! She "owns" whatever she wears, doesn't she?
Carmen:
She definitely owns Carmen Brand Outerwear
Duane Capizzi:
I'll share another tidbit though (along the lines of Carmen being a love story where everyone is in love with Carmen).
It was important for obvious reasons that the show be (among other things) about female empowerment. And we wanted to celebrate fashion of course. But it was super important to me to not fall into the "male gaze" trap. That was something I imparted to the storyboard crew and directors. It's a fine line, I know, but I think we succeeded.
Arden:
You sure did. What I adore about Carmen Sandiego is how unsexualized all the characters were while still being inclusive to different body types and races
Duane Capizzi:
Well artists love to sneak things in! So it was a little rule I had
They were mostly great about it - in all the 32 episodes, I think I asked to change only two shots for that reason. Where I had to go "ahem"
"Outerwear" sounds so peculiar but I think that's what made it work. I kept changing it back and forth and sometimes I'm surprised to see/hear it in the show. For the longest time it was "Carmen Clothiers." Did I make the right decision? Sometimes you can rework things too much and lose sight - it happens!
The one shot that leaps to mind was Shadowsan carrying her fireman style at top of 202, as they were escaping through the tunnels. Her, um, fundamentals were just a little too front and center to not fall into the "male gaze" trap. Nothing awful! It was borderline. We just adjusted the angle a bit
Julia:
My favorite most definitely has to be her formal wear from the "need for speed caper"
Duane Capizzi:
I'd have to think about my favorite outfit or top five. All her evening gowns of course!
Maybe "witch." We couldn't make it red because it would not have been a very good disguise (plus, you know: "Scarlet Witch" haha).
But let's not underestimate her signature hat/coat - I continue to be enamored with how we updated her look from the old trench coat thing.
Arden:
Not me suddenly motivated to draw Carmen in a scarlet witch outfit
Duane Capizzi:
Then you have to draw Zack as Pietro!
(or Player? Only his fingers are speedy)
Arden:
Idea: what if player (or Shadowsan) was Pietro
Duane Capizzi:
Shadowsan IS Pietro. He's so quick you never see him move.
Wren:
Shadowsan's fight with Brunt where it went slowmo and he moved fast was so cool!
Duane Capizzi:
Hey, Shadowsan is quite the fashion plate too - am I right?
I love the outfits on the show. So good! So perfect! But, I'm not being very modest am I
I really love SS in the dark trench coat. So. Bad. Ass.
Carmen:
Any thoughts on the Fashionista memory thing?
Duane Capizzi:
Fashionista, sure! What do you want to know?
Carmen:
Give me a second-
Duane Capizzi:
Thank you for noting the aesthetics on the show! Much effort, passion and vision from all involved - Chromosphere, our directors, animators, composers, sound mixers - everyone gave it all they had, it was so inspiring for all involved.
Carmen:
Was there any significance to that specific memory- Carmen defending Julia in the Fashionista Caper- being chosen as the first memory she remembered when she went outside? Like, why that scene specifically over any others for example?
(referring to the finale)
Duane Capizzi:
Oh, that! To be honest, not from me: we were just trying to do the "swirl of confused memories" like we did with Gray earlier in the season. We wanted to show that the ACME device had jostled some old memories loose and that "the girl agent with glasses" was now taking root in Carmen's rush of memories/emotions
But that specific memory, not necessarily from my POV - it could have been any number of Julia moments, like their first meeting on the train (for instance)
The director Jos Humphrey must have picked it. It worked for me!
Carmen:
We all loved that it was that specific memory that was chosen out of all Julia and Carmen moments, the fact that she remembered defending her was an added emotional experience to the already emotional finale
Duane Capizzi:
Well let's talk about the original scene in 204! On the surface just a light fun episode, but so many things came together there: Shadowsan connecting with Player; SS getting his new clothes; but the key thing was switching Julia back from doing Chief's bidding back to Carmen's side. The episode was built around the moment that Carmen pulls Julia on stage with her (I'm not kidding). That was THE moment
Carmen:
We have MANY questions... we should probably set a limit
Duane Capizzi:
Ask away - I don't mind. Honestly, Carmen is my favorite topic! I've been living, breathing, dreaming Carmen for the last 5 years! I don't think there's much to say, I think it's all there on screen. But happy to talk about it because I love to
Cam:
I have a question, what about the color theory in Carmen Sandiego? What do you think certain colors mean as in, blue, yellow, green, and red.
we have our own ideas about the colors but it would be interesting to hear from your perspective
Duane Capizzi:
Color theory! Well chromosphere color scripts every episode (!). If those haven't been shared publicly yet remind me, maybe I can get permission to do so or have them do it. They are lovely to behold.
But basically Carmen = red (duh); Vile = green; Acme = blue. That's the simple version. We started talking about that early on.
color scripts = they do thumbnail art of key scenes to share mood/emotion
we tried to NOT use red for non-Carmen scenes; and scenes where she was significant the color red would be dominant or sometimes symbolically precede her (for instance).
If you google color scripts I'm sure you will see some come up. Try Pixar color scripts for instance. There's a great Art of Pixar book with their color scripts.
Arden:
Do you think Julia is blue or purple?
Duane Capizzi:
Haha, Jules definitely purple! Cute.
Mage:
You've just confirmed the whole color theory these guys have been working on for a while.
Duane Capizzi:
I was actually being funny - is she actually color scripted purple in the series? Wow, my mind might be blown
Garfield:
Now I have a question!
Julia has great admiration and respect for Carmen. Do you think Carmen has as much respect and admiration for Julia as Julia does for her?
Duane Capizzi:
I think Julia might just be a little infatuated with Carmen (even if she hasn't fully articulated how to herself - remember, the show may be sophisticated but it's still a kids show). But mostly Julia just knows/intuits/deduces Carmen's a good guy, pretty much from the beginning. I think the two have a connection that defies space and time in some ways - look at how much they work in tandem without being in the same scenes together much of the time. I love that!
As for Carmen, of course she respects Julia: she knows Julia "gets" her, and respects Julia's smarts and mutual love of history/respect for cultures.
I love how Chase is the ultimate buzzkill for whatever might be stirring in Julia as she's watching Carmen fly away in the Pilot. She's like, "whooaa ..." Then Chase falls onto the windshield. Hilarious!
Nina:
I was actually wondering if Carmen and Julia were meant to have opposing color schemes? With Julia's original outfit I mean
Duane Capizzi:
Oh, good question about Julia's original outfit: I'd have to think about that or ask Jos or Chromosphere. J's colors ARE sort of a drabber distant cousin to Carmen's, aren't they? I think mostly we just wanted "drab workaday" colors for Interpol, knowing that both of them would eventually be slicked up as ACME Agents.
Nova:
Devineaux is immune to injuries it is the only reason why he has lasted so long in ACME and Interpol
Duane Capizzi:
Devineaux, one of my favorite lines: "I did not know you two kept in touch."
Am I right?
SelinIndigo:
I have one question:
Will we ever know Carmen's given name? Also, if you don't mind when is her birthday in this reboot?
Duane Capizzi:
Carmen's given name: never say never! But for where our series ended, I thought it would just interfere. That's not how I wanted you to remember her. It would have just been a label and spoiled her mystique IMO
Player, however: we totally messed with you! "Mr. Bouchard."
Carmen's birthday?
Hmmm.
Maybe month and day but not year: would hate to date the show
I also don't like naming ages in shows because it just gets weird with timelines and such. Or can be.
Carmen:
I made a post about this a while back— how did Carmen end up getting Julia's apartment address? did she just text her for it or straight up ask? did she find out on her own in the least stalker-y way possible? I just have so many theories- do you have any thoughts on it?
Duane Capizzi:
The apartment in the IA special? Oh that whole story was like one big dream sequence ;)
Arden:
What does the wink mean? Does Julia even live in an apartment?
Nina:
Does that mean Carmen dreamt she gave Julia roses or-
Duane Capizzi:
We played things faster and looser for fun there
Okay, I just saw what time it is. Yikes! Time flies when you're having fun. Well THANK YOU EVERYONE (for loving the show, for building this site, for being you.

A Man On Fire - Chapter 10
“Can I have my hand back?” what was the deal with this tug of war with her hand? Sweet, he finally let go “ow-kay..now, I've been listening to some of your music and I've been looking over the plans, so I made you a storyboard, nothing too fancy though, keep in mind it was done on a plane but I think you'll get the general idea” she pushed the rough sketches in his hand. “I would make a cube or a rectangle of lightpanels and I would plant the stage in the center of the venue, after all there's a lot of interaction with your fans right? That way everyone feels really close to you and there's a lot more potential for interaction” she was standing there with her back turned to them, gesturing at where the stage should be. “In other words, you can create your own little Universe, right here on this stage and let people be part of it”,
Jared stared completely dumbfounded at the storyboard “Shayla, send these over to the technicians right now, tell them to digitalize this and then have them call me” he pushed the papers in her hands “I want a clear visual by the time I get there, get a car ready, have Harper's things brought over, we're leaving in half an hour, you stay here and get Shannon on a flight to Frankfurt”. What? What was going on? Going to Frankfurt now? Jetlag, hello? “Sean, you're coming with us” he briefly said as he legged it back to his dressingroom, followed by Shayla who had to almost run to keep up with him. “You're taking Sean? I'm coming too” she hissed at him, slamming the door of the dressingroom behind her, “No! No, you're not! For your information, this is still a professional environment, not some playground where you're more focused on fucking Sean than anything else! There needs to be some professional distance, Shayla, in a week or so, he'll be hanging from the ceiling, that job is a dangerous one and I'm not gonna let him break his neck because you're constantly distracting him! Besides, you're needed here to finally do your job and keep things going! And I'll be damned if I'll continue to stand here and get lip from you every single day!”. Sean noticed how Harper was biting her lip, “I don't know what you're fretting about but we've got two hours to kill in the car on our way to Frankfurt” his arm slipped around her shoulder. “I'm not fretting, he just..seems pretty harsh, can't you hear him yelling at Shayla? Poor thing”. Ugh that irritating giggle of his “don't worry about her, she can handle him, it's you I'm more worried about”, whoooaa wait a minute, what? “Huh?”, Sean took a deep breath and weighed his words “just don't get caught up in his web, alright? I know what he's like with women and it ain't pretty”. Amazing, just what women needed, a guy with a big brother/father complex, well, welcome to the 21st century where women took care of their own and didn't let any man stand in the way of whatever it was they needed or wanted, besides she wasn't interested in any guy, no, not true, if she was honest with herself, there was only one name stuck to one man that kept haunting her, try and keep up Sean!

Subject: Re: re: friends again?
Coco,
You're not in the States anymore? Would it be too forward to ask where you are then? I know you're thinking that it's none of my business and maybe you're right, but I just want to know how you're doing, if you're safe? I know, I know, who died and made me your keeper? But hey, I care, alright?! I know you have your heart set on making me squirm and practically beg but I just need to say that I miss our conversations, I think we can both do with a friend right now,..
Who do you call 'a friend'? From what you wrote previously I could tell you grew up in hostile surroundings with your Dad and all..does that anger inspire your work (seeing that huge painting you're working on, I take that as a yes, or is that a one-off where all that pent-up frustration came spewing out?), what else inspires you?
P.S. Also in one your e-mails you mentioned being cut off financially? Can I help? I'd still like to buy that piece
ttys?
Joe
Mind your own business, why don't you, Joe? And what the hell was 'ttys', it sounded like some serious illness to be honest, sure yeah, she could sit here and act all smug, but the truth was that she was a tech-retard, plain and simple, the look on that guy's face, ugh what was his name again?come on, floppy hair guy..uhm uhm uhm, tip of your tongue..J-Jared, yes! The look on his face when he got her storyboard, 'digitalize this and digitalize that' bleghhh, not exactly Mister El Sympatico. Sean's flapping hand startled her as he sat down next to her, “bye, I'll call you” he yelled at his lover in the slamming door, instinctively she raised her hand at Shayla standing on the pavement, I'm waving..not that I know you, but ok yeah I'll wave at you because it's the right thing to do, the polite thing for you is to wave back and at least act like you mean it. As the car sped out towards the late afternoon traffic, she dug her phone inside her pocket, not now, an insane jetlag was not the best headspace for replies, no, forcefields up and phasers set to stun, at least for now...oh hello fatigue, what do we have here? A friendly arm to snuggle into? Excellent, best news all day! Sean's arm instinctively pulled her against him, letting his exhausted friend nestle against him. Checking the rearview mirror, Jared noticed Harper all snuggled up against Sean and envied their closeness, when was the last time he had done something so intimate and yet non-sexual as that? He could get sex every hour of every day, but this kind of friendship between a man and a woman, talking, sharing things, laughing, no tension, simple, true, and for him almost impossible to find. “Is she ok?” he caught Sean's eye in the mirror, “yeah, completely jetlagged, I'm just glad she's here..” Sean softly answered so not to wake her up. Sean, Sean, sweet yet not so bright Sean, who had yet a lot to learn still about a scorned woman's fury that would leave his ears ringing and his heart ripped to shreds, just keep it away from my tour, he leaned back in his seat and kept his hand tightly wrapped around his phone, come on Coco, I'm waiting.
Harper was still rubbing the sleep from her eyes when the lightpanels were hoisted on chains up into the sky, “just make it a rectangle, like a box..yes, perfect..hang on” she quickly climbed the ropeladder. She was like a cute, little monkey climbing the ladder and swinging her way high up to the ceiling to show all these guys how things were done, his heart literally skipped a beat when she made all the light panels become a tight light box, blasting colourful and mysterious visuals across the screens. “Told you she was amazing” Sean came standing next to him, “amazing and then some, fucking hell” Jared rubbed the goosebumps on his arms when one of the new songs flowed from the speakers. She looked down to see floppy hair guy jump on the stage underneath her, filming it all, that was a good sign right? Funny though, how she had done so many installations and everytime the reaction was 'well, yeah, I guess they're just lights, but is it art?' or 'what the hell am I supposed to feel?' but once music and some cool rock band was added to the equation, then hey presto, definitely Art, with a capital A. “And?” she jumped down, startling him as she landed right next to him on stage, and bit her lip as she looked up at her own creation above their heads, pretty neat, Harper, pretty neat!. “Dinner? Drinks after? To celebrate?” what? Celebrate? Floppy hair guy looked so happy, whoooo! “sure” she answered, jetlag forgotten all about for a couple of minutes. But it hit her twice as hard in the car when she was touching up her make up and briefly looked out of the window, heavy rain crashing down over Frankfurt, the buzz of her 5 minutes of success wearing off..

Subject: Where is Coco?
Joe,
I promised myself I wouldn't give you the light of day, leave things the way you decided to leave them in New York, but here I am reporting for duty, guess this compulsive loner needs a talk, a talk about the most cynical thing on this planet, love, L.O.V.E! because I miss love in my life, yes I do, there I said it, I put it out there, and if you think that makes me the biggest joke on the face of this Earth, then so be it! I'm only human and I can't keep my feelings in check all the frikkin' time.
I dunno, I guess it's just my friend (let's call him 'Jack' for privacy reasons, because I don't know if I can still call him that if he would ever find out I'm writing this silly stuff down) who got me thinking, I see him with his girlfriend and he's excited and loud and ridiculous around her, but then when we are alone and spend time, he turns into this warm, calm and protective animal I can be 'me' with, you know? It's like he's acting around her, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he's never himself around her or any other girl I've seen him with romantically. Have all my relationships gone belly-up, because those guys felt they couldn't be themselves around me? Did I ever really knew them? I think not! Men just want to do unconventional things with conventional girls, to me that is a recipe for disaster. So that's 2 of your questions answered: yes I'm safe with my friend Jack! My whereabouts are none of your business
I'm just gonna ignore the financial help part in your e-mail, I'm trying very hard not to be insulted, I think I'll just let it slide this once, just don't ever mention it to me again! Oh and don't mention the 'Dad' painting either, ok?
What else inspires me? Well, at the moment not so much, I just accepted a work thing in a city that is cold and boring, but I'm dreaming of better days, better times, a better me, in the meantime I promised myself I'm going to check out some museums tomorrow, maybe that'll help (or not because other artists make me wanna throw all my work out of the window).
What makes you dream? If you dream at all? Or maybe you dream of your lovely wife and 2,4 kids, wouldn't surprise me if you had them, you know? Oh and another thing, what the hell is 'ttys'?
Bye
Coco

Q&A with Glabs | HumanHuman
Two years ago, the Parisian musician, composer, songwriter and producer Glabs took a leap of faith to start releasing his own music, which was first picked up by fellow French music lover Sodwee. A year later and we had the evocative, cinematic and expansive EP, Here I Go, which imagines various points of human experiences inspired by life, death, relationships and Glabs’ background in making music for films.
One month back Glabs hit that 100% promising mark - sure fire proof that his step into the unknown has continued to bring in new supporters of the project. Here we ask this Promising Artist about his inspirations, taking the production reigns, all-time favourite artists, ones to watch from the French music scene, and whether we might be hearing more from Glabs in the near future.
Our user have known about Glabs since Sodwee’s discovery two years ago, but when did you first hear about HumanHuman?
To be honest, I released my EP by necessity, without following any usual way. I just sent an email to few music journalists and I was surprised to have a very good feedback. Sodwee was one of them, and I heard about HumanHuman during a discussion.
How has the online music world, with its bloggers, tastemakers and listeners, reacted to your music so far?
As I said earlier, I was pleasantly surprised to receive so many articles and comments on my EP, sent confidentially. I was glad to read that most of the time tastemakers had understood what I wanted to say; the emotions I would like to transmit.
You made quite an unconventional introduction with a finished EP, titled Here I Go, around a year ago. It appeared seemingly out of nowhere from our perspective, which we know isn’t true, so what was the catalyst for this EP?
The catalyst of this EP was to be the closest to my mental pictures. Each song have its story, it's scenario, its storyboard. My hope is to be able to convey it to the listeners. This requirement has led me to take some particular production choices, such as leaving some imperfections on purpose, to be more organic, closest to the truth, and authentic. My guide wasn’t to have the sound that would meet standards, but to have the best illustration of my brain, and touch the listener’s sensitivity.
As discoverer Sodwee commented on your artist profile page, the EP is “self-produced from A to Z.” Is that the case?
Yes it is. I have completely self-produced this EP, I have played all instruments, all the records and mix. Except the final mix of two songs , produced at Hinterland Lab by Francois Baurin and the mastering produced at Globe Audio Mastering by Alexis Bardinet. Lyrics are co-written with Jennifer Jordan.
There’s a startling amount of variety across the EP - piano ballads; rough acoustic guitar recordings; cinematic electronica. Why so diverse?
Only the stories and emotions were the restrictions of this EP. For an example, the song “Stealing Tomorrow” is a sci-fi story talking about the solitude of a man who has been isolated underground from the rest of the world because he doesn’t match to an ideal genetic code. But, he will realize that there is a whole crowd who wants to scream his existence. I would like to transmit this into the arrangement and the instrument usage.
I didn’t want to restrict myself, and was hoping that my personality and my music’s color will be sufficient to have a conductible line.
Do you also have eclectic listening habits? Who are some of your all-time favourite artists?
Yes, as a child i did have very eclectic listening habits. Accented by my job which is to write music for a variety of movies, and to find the most suitable music for pictures, I have to be able to write a large variety of musical styles. It’s very difficult to mention one and not another. But it’s going from Schubert to Kate Tempest, passing by Dhafer Youssef, Warhaus, The National, Alt-J, Patrick Watson, Archy Marshall/King Krule, Son Lux...
Possibly one of your current picks may be Bastien Picot who features on the post-EP single “MOVE ON”. What brought about this collaboration?
The collaboration with B Picot on this single was a beautiful opportunity in my life. A friend told me about him, I had to ask him to sing on my song composed originally for a movie, and we've shared a very good feeling about music. Some mutual music inspiration and good vibrations.
This newer track has some noticeable differences in the sonic elements and production, which a richer, crisper sound than we’ve heard previously from you. How did you approach recording and producing “Move On”?
Yes, as previously said, my EP, Here I Go, was my first official released under GLABS and I wanted it to be singular, the closest to me, with asperity and authenticity. “Move On” is probably closest to sound standards.
Overall, your music has a strong sense of solitude, do you prefer to write music alone?
Yes, I used to write music alone. Maybe I‘m wrong but I think it’s difficult to find an alter-ego composer, especially for this particular EP where I have tried to transmit inner feelings. I’m confident with life to make me change my mind, but I love to work with singers, authors.. and to share with other musicians. I would love to hear a remix of “Here I Go” too...
Songs such as “Star Rocker” and “Here I Go” have this pervading sense of loneliness bolstered by a cinematic production and carefully chosen instrumentation. What did you hope to convey through these songs?
Your question is funny because those two songs are talking somehow about the birth and the death. The two moments of our life where we can say that we are alone for sure. This loneliness could be oppressively difficult, but in my stories, there is a lot of comfort, warm feelings and hopefulness. The light is always somewhere and the cinematic production help me to translate this ambivalence.
What might inspire a song for the Glabs project?
I don’t know, to be transparent, it can be a lot of things. Usually more a human emotion than society criticism.
Are you currently working on any new material? Perhaps something we may hear in 2018?
Yes, I have already composed new songs, and I would love to release some this year.
When did you first get into music? And did you always imagine pursuing music in a serious way?
I was initiated to music when I was six-years-old. I started violin at eight-years-old and learned to play other instruments on my own as a self-taught artist. I rapidly felt the need of expressing myself instead of playing covers. I was searching a way to pursuing music seriously, as a professional and I started as a FOH and Studio sound engineer but I wasn’t completely happy. So, few years ago, I said to myself “Here I Go!”
You’re currently based in Paris, how would you describe the music scene over there? Does the scene differ from the rest of France?
I’m not a big French music listener. I'm used to listening to music from UK, USA, Nordic countries, Africa or South America. We noticed a return from the 80/90's, with an excess of naivety which is disturbing me. Most of the French artists I like are singing in English. I'm not sure the Paris Scene really differs from the rest. Maybe Paris is a showcase city, where you can discover a wider variety of artist, where artist are coming with prospect to be famous and meet the biggest one. Paris is very cosmopolitan, most of Parisians are not born here...
For any visiting music fans, do you have any recommendations of artists or bands to watch out for in Paris?
The French artists or bands that I would recommend: Her, Papooz, Agar Agar, Rone, French 79, Radio Elvis, Albin de la Simone, and Mathieu Boogaerts.
