hi friend! i hope you’re doing well too!
there are SO many opportunities for you to pursue in the realm of photography (as well as filming and editing, but we’ll get to that). i hope i can offer up some ideas!
NOTE: I’m going to include actual screenshots from actual positions I searched for, to demonstrate the variety of positions and opportunities available!
1) IN FILM, there are roles like the DP, camera operator, and 1st and 2nd assistant camera.
here’s a freelance opportunity i just found in los angeles, and it looks like you’d be paid if you were a camera op for them:
2) IN TV NEWS, there are roles like creative services producer, marketing, camera operators out in the field who work with reporters and shoot their stand-ups and b-roll, editors in the building who put packages together.
here’s a listing of needed qualifications for something similar to MY current job, as a creative services producer:
3) IN CORPORATE JOBS, there’s the opportunity for social media marketing! taking photos for companies in your area. building their instagram, their facebook. here’s an example from shutterfly:
4) INDEPENDENT PHOTOGRAPHERS EXIST! you make a business around yourself and take photos for people. one of my closest friends did this - she left her job in the corporate world and started her own wedding photography business. she’s doing EXTREMELY well, has a huge following on social media, and (pre-covid) was even traveling to europe to take wedding photos for certain clients.
here’s a quick example from her website:
there’s baby photography, boudoir photography, wildlife/landscape photography, lifestyle, promotions for someone’s social media, etc. tons of possibilities for photography.
a side note: my father, who works a corporate job full time, took up photography when i was in high school, and developed his skills so much that he now has a very prominent instagram for all his photos for local sites and events. he’s got 5,000+ followers, and while HE doesn’t want to make any money from his account... i’m sure YOU could if you followed the same path. photography CAN be a ‘side hustle.’ it CAN be a fun, in your free time gig. you could take headshots for friends, offer to film a local band performance, etc etc. so many opportunities.
does this help?? i hope it helps!!
