Time for an Upgrade
Tumblr media
To celebrate a successful research roll this turn, please enjoy a look into what Caelinda has been up to while the rest of the Sunguard fights on the front lines!
The great merchant fleet of Quel’thalas. Once upon a time, Caelinda dreamed that she might one day own a fraction of the ships endowed with her homeland’s coin and goods. She had hoped her family crest would be flown on their sails one day when she was older. Perhaps by her five-hundredth birthday. But now, with those same ships laid out before her like pawns on her own personal chessboard, she only felt pity.
The fleetest ships that dared sail the shipping lanes of Azeroth were to be retrofitted to mere military vessels by her order. If it weren’t for the fact that her homeland was being invaded at present, Caelinda might shed a tear or two. War always did take away the things she enjoyed most.
Far below, the shipyards bustle with activity. For tireless hours, the men now under Caelinda’s command worked to strip the merchant fleet bare of all non-essential equipment and put in just about any weaponry and military technology they could squeeze in. Hundreds of men and women at her disposal, and yet the work simply would not progress fast enough. Not with all the work she had put in, even going so far as to delve the Dawnspire’s massive library to research the subject, could Caelinda get the work to go fast enough.
And as she stares out the window, watching the work far below, she can only be reminded more of her own limitation. How terrible was that mortal affliction, the inability to be everywhere at once. It has surely spoiled her day, and not for lack of trying. Where others might kill for her work, to sit on her haunches at merely direct from the comfort of an office, Caelinda despises it.
While her friends, her family, cross blades on the front lines, she is to remain behind with hardly a thing to do to make herself useful.
“Ma’am.”
Caelinda turns away from the window, her eyes weary from these sleepless nights, and breathes a sigh. There to greet her is one of her foremen, a kindly soul by the name of Malik. He’d been her rock for these last few days, guiding her orders and advising the men on the ground.
“How many times must I tell you,” Caelinda says. “Not to call me that. I work for a livin’, I don’t need to be called ma’am.”
Malik nods, his hands clutched around his ledger tightly. “Yes, that you have, but it seems only right. Even this far from the Dawnspire, your title carries weight, Duskward.”
“I’ve slapped folks right across the face for gettin’ that formal with me, Malik.” She sighs again, her shoulders sagging. “How goes the work?”
“Steady. It should only be a few more days before the entire fleet is retrofitted per your instructions. It would have been sooner, but-”
She cuts him off. “But supply lines from the shipyards are choked, yes I know. As if the sounds of Kul Tiran cannons and howling wolves didn’t tip me off.”
“They are a bit unsettling.” Malik agrees.
Caelinda grunts her own acknowledgement. She turns back to the window to inspect the work with her own eyes again. She can see the men, small things from her height, pushing forward ever steadily as Malik had said. Most of the upgrades were small, nothing to get too excited about. Merchant ships were already fast and could weather a storm well, but for military work they needed more than strong sails and perfectly shaped rudders. The armaments were the hard part, they’d had trouble shipping them in. Reinforcements were difficult too what with the worgen blocking their access to land shipping. To be honest, it’s surprising the work has only taken this long.
“Any word from the front?” Caelinda inquires.
“Some,” Comes the reply. “I’ve heard that some success has been had by the Archon and the main host near Silvermoon. No word from further north though, ma’am.”
“I’m not worried about the Spectre and her outfit. If anythin’, I feel bad for the folks who are in her way. Anyway, we’ll reinforce her position with these.” She gestures out the window towards the dry docked ships.
“Of course.”
Caelinda looks over her shoulder, her tired gaze falling back on Malik. “I’m sorry, I keep ramblin’ on about the war. Was there somethin’ specific you asked to meet me for?”
The older elf takes a few steps forward. His grizzled appearance barely belies his age. When they’d first met, Caelinda had mistaken him for barely three hundred, but apparently the elf is pushing close to nine. The few gray hairs in his brownish beard might have tipped her off to that fact.
Malik holds up his ledger. “We have a small situation with the armaments on the Silver Wind, ma’am.”
“What kind of situation?”
“It’s the last ship in need of fresh weaponry, ma’am. Problem is, the arms we had shipped in, specifically the ballistae are not fit for service.”
That gets her full attention. Caelinda whips around, “What do you mean not fit for service?”
“They weren’t constructed properly.” Malik says. “Routine checks discovered flaws in both the firing mechanisms and the accompanying ammunition. They aren’t safe, ma’am. If the Silver Wind got caught in battle with those things, everyone aboard would be slaughtered after they realized the issue.”
“Is there no way to repair them in time?”
Malik just shakes his head. “No, ma’am. We don’t have mechanics here who can, and even if we did it is likely that the repairs would take too long. The Silver Wind is scheduled for deployment within the next ten hours.”
Caelinda quickly paces over to her temporary desk and rifles through her files. Requisition forms, ammunition lists, ship documents, everything was before her. She snatches up the paper detailing the remaining equipment still being installed as of the previous night, and her expression immediately turns into a scowl.
She casts the paper aside. “And we have no spares. Excellent, so either the Silver Wind goes out with no ranged armaments or we have to strip another ship for more parts.”
Malik nods.
Caelinda takes a step backwards and slumps down into her chair. This was a mess, and a mess that could cost lives at that. She hated these messes particularly. The dichotomy of the situation really is the biggest pain in the neck. There’s nothing worse than choosing between two equally bad options.
“Ma’am,” Malik interjects. “The schedule could be adjusted. If we could hold off on deploying the Silver Wind for another two or three days, we might find the armaments we need.”
“No, that ship is needed now. That schedule was made with the survival of our kingdom at heart, and I intend to follow it.”
“But how, ma’am?”
Now there was the tricky question. How can she do the impossible? It definitely isn’t in her power to materialize ballistae from thin air. But, there might be another avenue. Already, the gears under her orange hair are turning. As fast as can be, Caelinda thinks. Solutions always present themselves to the thinkers, and she’s thinking as hard as any thinker ever thinks. It’s not her specialty, but it works in a pinch.
“Ma’am?”
Caelinda snaps her fingers and shoots out of her chair. She looks at Malik with wide, excited eyes. “I’ve got it.”
The old foreman looks at her expectantly.
“It’s a brilliant idea.” Caelinda continues. She marches back to the window and points downwards to the side of the building. There sits an unassuming caravan. “I have to say, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. This is a brilliant idea.”
“What is?” Malik asks.
Caelinda twirls around and points her finger at Malik. “Ingenuity, my good friend, ingenuity. And it’s all kept in my home.” She reaches into her pocket and withdraws a small keyring that she tosses to Malik. The old elf catches it deftly and inspects the silver set.
“Get the men down to my caravan, Malik. Storeroom eight, bring out the biggest box inside, you won’t be able to miss it. Open the latch behind it, otherwise you’ll break somethin’.”
Malik looks about as confused as a man could possibly be. He dangles the keys in front of him and splutters, “What exactly are we retrieving, ma’am?”
“Treasure, Malik.” Caelinda says with a point of her finger upwards. “Why, the treasure that may help save Quel’thalas. But if you want specifics, you’re retrievin’ a pair of thunder cannons I ‘requisitioned’ from the Isle of Thunder a few years back. I’m sure the Silver Wind will be quite appreciative of her new arsenal. Do you get what I mean?”
Malik looks between her and the keys, and then the realization comes to his eyes. His jaw drops then closes again. With a nod, the elf turns on his heel and rushes quickly down the hall towards the work yard.
“Thunder cannons.” Caelinda muses as she turns back to the window. “I always told myself I’d find a use for them, but I didn’t think it would be this.”
But nonetheless, Caelinda smiles. It was a new prospect, using her own stock to furnish weaponry for the effort, but when it was her choice it felt good. This decision, her decision was her contribution. She couldn’t be out there with her comrades fighting dwarves on the front lines, but she can support them from afar this time. The cost of doing business one might say. She’ll have to factor that in down the line, otherwise her ledgers will get downright confusing.

Xo’den Stormsorrow Voltcaster  - The Wayfarer
“ You don’t always see the world as you once did when finding yourself consumed by sorrow, but there are places out in the wilds of forest and sea that make your self plight seem a tiny thing. ”
the basics –––
NAME: Xodense Stormsorrow
AGE: 10,000~
BIRTHDAY: October 1st
RACE: Kal’dorei (Night Elf)
GENDER: Male
SEXUALITY: Pansexual
MARITAL STATUS: Single
ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Good
physical appearance –––
Towering and lean like most Night Elves, Xo is certainly hardier of body than most to represent his even more extreme lifestyle in the wilds. His muscles are tough and corded throughout his physique and his reflexes keen, though to pay close attention to his dark violet skin would be to mark innumerable scars from ages of maintaining such a dangerous lifestyle, he even lost the tip of one ear in a close encounter with trolls, leading his left to be more harshly knife-like, if shorter. Still his hands are just a nimble to illustrate his maps and document his journal, as they would be strong while wrangling a vicious beast, scaling a terrible peak, or tightly gripping arrow after arrow in prolonged battle.
Xo tends to keep a short beard or a dash of snow-white stubble in his travels, and can occasionally be found clean shaven for special causes. His hair tends to be the same, cropped close or cut into a warriors row, he learned long ago how dangerous the long hair his people tend to prefer is in the wild. His eyes glow a darker yellow than most of his bloodline, even his brother, though the reasoning for this is unknown.
Most of the time you can find him in an outfit of serviceable, utilitarian clothes suitable for his life on the road, but always with a pair of hardy boots. This clothing has in time begun to be more and more accompanied with armor plating and special devices of his own construction to keep himself safe. Certain occasions bring him back to style as a true Kalidorei Warrior, regaled in beautifully sculpted plate and mail armor. You'll also usually find an considerable amount of pouches and his ever present rucksack holding all manner of doodads, lucky-dos, whatsits, devices, and artifacts. You’ll find a hunting knife or two, occasionally a spear or sword. He is also known for his signature “Stormbow”, a tremendously powerful cross between a bow’s form and functions, the sophistication of design you’d find in a firearm, and the destructive force of a titan artifact.
personal –––
PROFESSION: After the Sundering a call was put out for a handful of adventurous souls to map out the new geography of the land. For centuries he carried out this lonely duty, his only company most of the time were the beasts of the wilds and his owl and raven companions. In  time though as he interacted more with the intelligent races he encountered, he eventually found value in trading artifacts and information. Eventually he was gifted in return lessons from a old engineer sometime before the 1st War. He now finds time to craft various gadgets along in his travels.
HOBBIES: Delving Into forgotten ruins, fishing, drinking, and working on his newest project (Which is often delayed and forgotten)
LANGUAGES: Common, Darnassian, some Draenei
RESIDENCE: No permanent lodging
BIRTHPLACE: Ashenvale, Kalimdor
RELIGION: Elune
FEARS: If any one thing makes Xo ill at ease, it is the presence of Fel corruption. Though as of recent years he has had to come to deal with the dread that is mortality. After such a long life, the many paths and worlds he has walked, as he wishes for is more time, time with which to travel even farther.
relationships –––
SPOUSE: None

Ladies of Burlesque, December 2019
Tumblr media
Anja Pavlova is back to host, perform and celebrate her birthday in the festive edition of the show of her dreams,  Ladies of Burlesque!
Did the show weave a winter spell or left us alone under the mistletoe?
Read on, darling!
Before we dive into the glitter,
Here’s the most important point of everything I do -
~The Eternal Manifesto~
It is hereby declared that this little nook of the world wide web shall be devoted to the praise & critique of the art of burlesque, specifically in Russia.
Let it also be known that I am first and foremost a benevolent force, and every single criticism is documented solely for the purpose of evolution, growth and inspiration, darling.
Never forget - it is fantastic that the burlesque scene in Russia has grown so much in the last few years. Brava, ladies! As a fact and a statement, it is absolutely fabulous.
However, I volunteer to wear the heavy crown of expertise, having seen many a show in many a place, and having a keen eye for detail and a heart hungry for that wow factor. I always come with an open heart, am quite easily entertained, and know how hard the craft is - I can overlook many a fault when there’s stage presence, charisma and that fire of passion. Oh, and self-irony.
All is sickly without self-irony.
Now, onwards! To fabulousness!
Short summary: I do it because I love you all and want you to excel.
Also, allow me to share a wonderful review by Party Parrot!
 https://lazy-boogie.livejournal.com/3435.html
Thank you ever so for the wink and the nod - what a pleasant surprise! Thrilled that your inspiration lead to write such a brilliant summary of the night. Perhaps my tiny endeavours might create a movement of sharp-eyed, truly grateful audience members! After all, we can’t all be blocked, right? (read on, darling...)
The Venue
The place of action was Cеребряный Век (Silver Age) restaurant, a classic among burlesque events (it even hosted the Moscow Burlesque Festival). It is indeed pure glamour, opulence dripping off every detail! I mean, look at the pool room!
Just look at the pool room!
The second you entered, the atmosphere enveloped you with it’s gilded velvet glory. Of course, there were columns (this is Moscow after all, it’s near impossible to find a venue without columns), but thanks to the high stage and spacious room everyone had a pretty good view. I do wonder if the dressing room was as luxurious as the rest of the place!
If only my accolades extended to the food, but alas! We are spoiled rotten by Michel, and the tiny portions, uninspired recipes and stale presentation were not worthy of the non-negotiable deposit (which was almost as expensive as the tickets!). But we did not come to eat, oh no, darling - we came for a feast, but one for the eyes!
The Performances
Darling, it was a beautiful night. It was a dazzling, glittering, bejewelled, vajazzled (not really) night. My heart melted - and not just because Pavlova was back, but because it was legitimately a beautiful - beautiful show.
The Chorus Line Jazz Dancers were stunning! Their number was so gloriously joyous, for the first time they legitimately looked like they were having fun. Every beat was greeted with a tap, clap or other inspired move, and the joy was infectious! They looked stunning, danced wonderfully well and energised the whole room.
Marie Weinberg appeared not once, not twice, but four times - and looked stunning every single time. Every single song sounded exactly the same, but that’s her strength - she sounds exactly like a 1930′s record. She is a perfect pin-up model, her photos are always flawless. She does not currently have an arsenal of stage choices (perhaps she doesn’t need it), but she did find her niche and she is gently charming in it.
We got to see the famous blue showgirl ensemble of Jeva Noir! She presented a classic number - no gimmicks, no emotions, just good ol’ undressing. What strikes me every time I see her is how majestically beautiful she is - she has a unique type of beauty, like an actual Titaness, but doesn’t use it in her acts at all. We are always stunned by her looks, but never by the performance - perhaps because there is no harmony between them. A hawk does not excel when posing as a sparrow.
However, the general public got to see a new side of her talent - Jeva is a marvellous seamstress, and she brought her first collection for everyone to view and purchase! Every single lady left that room with a desire to own the velvety, feathery, dreamy ensembles made by Lady Noir.
Tamasinushka looked utterly stunning - as usual. And her act was exactly how her acts are every single time - luxuriously languid, entrancingly self-focused, glittering and poised. Was it the most exciting or memorable act of the night? No, but it was gorgeous. When her magic works, she truly does change the flow of time in the room. Quite excited to see her emerge in 2020 with new energy and new renditions of beloved acts.
Ellisha Fox graced the stage in his blue and white ensemble, and was an absolute treasure. He is an astonishing dancer, his charisma and stage presence are indeed unique. Looking forward to the moment when he finds even more freedom on stage and lets himself dissolve in the moment - it does sometimes feel like he’s participating in a dance competition, focusing hard on the moves and slightly loses the connection with the audience...but being a boylesque performer, all eyes will be on him regardless. I always sing the song of the benefits of self-irony!...But I am nitpicking, darling - because I can see him becoming an international superstar and want him to excel.
Katerina Sahara brought her Desert Sun and Dragon acts (not quite the most Christmassy/wintery choices, but we didn’t really mind). It is impossible to look away when she’s on stage, but I must say that this particular combination of acts doesn’t really work - they are incredibly similar (if not equal) in tempo and atmosphere, so putting them together within one show doesn’t make either one shine particularly bright. Again, both are flawlessly gorgeous, it’s not a critique on the acts themselves - more on the directorial decisions of the show. Hope she does not overwork her wondrous self, for she seems to have fully joined the ranks of Bezhetskaya’s belles.
Radmila Rocky Zombie - well, it’s been a while since the vivacious mistress of Haunted Cathouse graced the Moscow stage! She brought her Americana fantasy cowgirl ensemble, and it was pure fun - she enjoyed it, the audience enjoyed it, everyone had a good time. Where the act lacked polish, it made up plenty with its ebullient bounciness.
Sadly, our mullet marvel blocked me on Instagram - understandable, darling! What can be more horrible than constructive criticism and adoration? Quite flattered, never thought my humble self would get this much attention!
Konfetki looked fabulous - especially at the curtain call. Fantastic dress!
Helen! Helen the heavenly stage kitten! I swear to all the Glamour Gods, every single show that lady has a glow-up. Her Burlesque Santa outfit leaves me speechless - me, darling! Speechless! Flawless.
Blanche de Moscou brought her Sweet Kink act to the stage, and it was as beguiling as usual, but that’s not what I want to talk about. There’s a new act. The new act is phenomenal. It’s inspired by an act that her stunning mother directed in the 90′s, and it’s a whole spy-robot-Blade Runner extravaganza! Jaws dropped to the floor the second that luxurious umbrella appeared, and every new costume reveal was even more hypnotising. Her sense of rhythm is impeccable, and the way she marries complete immersion in the atmosphere of the act and her signature humour is spectacular. And the glitter gun! It was not a gun, it was a bazooka!
This was a true showstopper, and really would make more sense at the last act of the show (energetically and logistically - all that glitter!). I think this might be the most impressive act I’ve seen in this country.
Anja Pavlova, the one and only Swan Queen, oh how we’ve missed you. Lady Pavlova brought a myriad of costume changes and two acts, a classic Jazz Age one, and a premiere - Snow Maiden! Her forte truly is her emotional range. When is on that stage, she lives and breathes the music, and takes the audience on the ride with her. The way she catches every bit is ingenius, and she truly floats. Even this old heart had to wipe off a few secret tears...She is a pure delight. And she sang! And she knows exactly where her strength is, so she invited Marie to sing with her and went for acting and engaging with the audience. Her voice can not boast strength, but the sweetness, tenderness and sincerity made it soar.  If I were to make one comment, it would be about the hosting. Each act completely mesmerised and transported us into a magical land of pure glamour...and the hosting was more Earth-bound. Can’t claim that it’s a negative, but when I noticed it, it did create a slight imbalance.
We want to dive deep into the magic, uninterrupted, darling!
Dearest reader, do yourself a favour and have a look at these superb photos. Dive into the atmosphere, honey! No words of mine will truly convey the joy of the evening.
The Verdict
The show truly was a showcase of ladies - and how different they can be.
It was utterly delightful and stunningly beautiful.
Ladies of Burlesque remains the most elegant and polished burlesque show in Moscow - at least when Pavlova is around to keep an eye on things.
Bar Burlesque is taking place on January 10th, you can secure your sweet spot here.

The Rise of the Battleground Campus

The Rise of the Battleground Campus
NextGen Arizona’s organizers Maria Eller and Dana Carey on the Arizona State University campus in Phoenix. | M. Scott Mahaskey/Politico
Kyle Spencer is a journalist who covers the confluence of education and politics. The reporting for this article was supported by a Spencer Education Journalism Fellowship at Columbia University.
TEMPE, Ariz.—The vibe at Arizona State University’s sprawling main campus of palm trees and succulents was part carnival, part political convention. Hip hop and dance pop blasted from speakers as students handed out free popcorn and cotton candy on the lawn near the student union. Young men and women played bean bag and ball-toss games typically reserved for child birthday parties or the state fair, whilecheerful, clipboard-toting activists in T-shirts and flip-flops urged them to register to vote.
This mixing of junk food and civic zeal was a poll-tested and focus-grouped enterprise, as carefully constructed as a 30-second television advertisement. It was all part of September’s National Voter Registration Day, a 7-year-old aspiring holiday. It’s little known among people who aren’t election officials, political activists—or the college students in their sights. At ASU, the civic zeal regularly spills over into the rest of the week and well into the next, as young liberals seek to register as many students as possible, and while young conservatives seek to remind them that not every 20-something has to be a liberal. This year, there were so many volunteers registering their classmates in preparation for the state’s Democratic primary in March and the general election in November 2020 that canvassers had trouble finding a single student who hadn’t already been approached.
The College Republicans stood behind tables brimming with Constitutions. March for Our Lives organizers distributed flyers for a free pancake breakfast to talk about gun safety laws. And Turning Point U.S.A., the ubiquitous campus conservative group, not only handed out bags of potato chips and miniature Snickers bars, but also rolled out a giant “free speech ball” and asked students to write “whatever you want” on the ball with a black sharpie. Many did. The idea was to mock safe spaces and knee-jerk campus liberalism, but the ball ended up blanketed with as many far-left as far-right views.South America is America too. I love Donald Trump. We need government transparency. #Bernie2020.
As the 2020 election approaches, both parties are sinking money and time into college campuses, driven by the idea that students—often dismissed as low-turnout layabouts—could have a huge effect in a tight race in a swing state. The mega-campuses of the Brobdingnagian public universities and community colleges in states like like Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan or Pennsylvania are sometimes called “battleground campuses” by organizers and activists on the ground. “In an election that could come down to a point or two either way in Arizona or Wisconsin, turning out voters at ASU, University of Wisconsin-Madison and other college campuses in these states could easily make the difference,” said Andrew Baumann, a pollster for Global Strategy Group, a consulting firm that spent 2018 trying to figure out what makes the would-be college voter tick for Tom Steyer’s NextGen.
“It’s pretty clear that 2020 is going to shatter records for turnout given what we saw in 2018, the Virginia and Kentucky elections a couple of weeks ago, and what we’re seeing in every poll that asks about enthusiasm to vote or motivation,” Baumann said. “And the group that has the most room to grow is young people.” While young voters still turned out at lower rates than older voters in 2018, their rate of increase in turnout was, he says, “by far” the highest.
In the Trump era, college students are voting in record numbers. In 2018, 7.5 million college students who were eligible to vote went to the polls. That was a 40 percent turnout, more than double the rate four years earlier, according to researchers at Tufts University. At ASU, of the students registered to vote in the most recent midterms, 59 percent pulled a lever, compared to 27 percent in 2014.
And there are more young people now than ever. In 2020, people between 18 and 23 will make up a tenth of the electorate, up from just 4 percent in 2016. Going beyond college-age Americans, voters between 18 and 29 now represent 21 percent of the population. That’s 46 million voters, compared to 39 million among seniors.
With multiple Starbucks, their own police departments, community engagement centers and polling booths, these massive universities are like small cities. In 2016, Trump took Arizona by 91,234 votes. ASU’s total 2018 enrollment was 111,249 (with 72,709 students on its campuses and 38,540 enrolled online). In Wisconsin, Trump won by 22,748. The student population at the University of Wisconsin at Madison is nearly double that. Trump secured Pennsylvania with 44,292 votes. The student population at Pennsylvania State University at State College is more than twice that. And in Michigan, where Trump won by almost 11,000 votes, Michigan State University’s student body count is more than four times that number. College students really could help swing a state and therefore the presidential election, as well as make the difference for a U.S. Senate seat and other down-ballot races.
“You’ve got 50,000 kids living in a fairly compact area,” said Teddy Goff, a partner at Precision Strategies, a consulting firm in Washington that was founded by veterans of Barack Obama’s political operation. “If you’ve got people on foot going door to door or standing in a single location with a clip board and fliers there’s not a more effective way to get people registered and ready to vote.”
In advance of Trump’s reelection effort, his son Don Jr. has embarked on a near-constant tour of swing state universities, often with his girlfriend and former Fox News host, Kimberly Guilfoyle. Since announcing her 2020 run, the selfie-fueled Elizabeth Warren has addressed a 3,000-person audience in an auditorium at ASU about “money-driven corruption in Washington” and student loan debt. During a recent call inquiring about the preponderance of candidates addressing students the University of Michigan, I was told the press office was too busy to talk, as the university was planning a visit from Hillary Clinton, who came the next day, to share her wisdom on how to beat (or perhaps just get more votes than) Trump.
Yet polls also show that these young voters are less likely to identify with political parties, which they view as feckless entities corrupted by big business and bureaucrats, than they are to ally with specific issues like health care or LGBTQ rights. This aversion to parties can make them less predictable than boomers who have voter files that are decades-long.
In addition to untold student debt, many young college students also bear resentment that no one kept the semi-automatics out of their high schools. They aren’t really mad, according to surveys, polls and chats with people who spend a lot of time with them, as much as they are ready to take charge.
Even if they resistbeing identified as party members, most college students vote for the Democrats, so it would seem that Trump’s eventual opponent would have an obvious advantage on the nation’s campuses. Voters of ages 18 to 29 supported Democrats by a 44-point margin in 2018, Baumann says. That was up from a 25-point margin in favor of Hillary Clinton in 2016.
But with a well-funded and heavily coordinated band of conservative groups long used to outspending Democrats, it’s not entirely clear who is the David and who is the Goliath. The Leadership Institute, a school for young conservatives founded by Morton Blackwell, has trained more than 200,000 Republican-leaning activists since its inception in 1979. Among its graduates are Karl Rove, Grover Norquist and Mitch McConnell. Last fiscal year, the institute had nearly $20 million in net assets and worked with close to 2,000 groups, holding nearly 6,000 campus activities. A review of dozens of tax documents indicate that this past fiscal year alone, conservative foundations spent more than $100 million on the long-term venture of drawing college students to their side, with groups like Young America’s Foundation, which has $70 million in net assets, alone spending more than $19 million on educational endeavors.
NextGen America, the progressive, get-out-the-vote group founded by California billionaire turned 2020 presidential candidate Tom Steyer, is the most prominent advocacy outfit aimed at the young left. It spent $38 million in 2018 and is expected to spend at least that much in 2020 on voter participation efforts, mostly on large schools in swing states. That’s made NextGen a campus darling and has helped it to infuse its well-tested strategies into other less impressively funded progressive groups.
But together conservative groups are expected to far exceed that. Students for Trump, the political arm of Charlie Kirk’s conservative Turning Point U.S.A., has announced that it will be spending an estimated $15 million, and Young Americans for Liberty is planning on spending a projected $13 million on campuses recruiting, training and canvassing for 150 libertarian candidates that the organization plans to endorse in state legislative races around the country.
Sitting at one of ASU’s five Starbucks, wearing a blue T-shirt that read Be A Voter, Azza Abuseif, who is the Arizona coordinator for NextGen, told me her team at ASU—111 volunteers, two paid organizers and a regional coordinator who oversees operations—was focused on one thing: “Register, register, register.” In 2018, the group registered more than 20,000 young Arizonans and aims to register at least as many for 2020. Other groups in the state will focus on stoking the state’s Latino population, or white suburban women, or Native Americans and African Americans. As Abuseif said, “We are going to bring the youth vote.”
“We believe we can change this election by targeting students,” she told me.
Austin Smith, the administrative director for the PAC overseeing Students for Trump, told me he wasn’t sure Abuseif’s plan would do the trick. It was lunchtime and he was wearing jeans and cowboy boots, despite the scorching heat. We were standing on the campus’ main quad a week after Voter Registration Day, and activists of all political persuasions were enticing students to their tables. Turning Point’s table—bursting with volunteers wearing T-shirts that said “Hate Us ‘Cause They Aint’ Us,” a nod to the group’s belief in American exceptionalism—seemed to be garnering the most attention.
Smith seemed to know that he wasn’t going to persuade a majority of his peers to vote to reelect Trump—but that isn’t the plan. If Students for Trump can distract its progressive rivals and shave off a few votes for the Democrats here and there, they’ll count it as a win, maybe even a decisive one. “We’re going to get a larger amount of votes than most political consultants and pundits think,” Smith told me. “We don’t need as many votes as the left does.”
Still, in 2016 in Wisconsin, Hillary Clinton won voters under 30 by just 4 points. Across the fabled and breached Blue Wall that year, college-aged field organizers grumbled bitterly that they’d been ignored by Clinton’s headquarters in Brooklyn. In Michigan, they alleged, frequent requests for campaign literature were denied by Brooklyn. In Pennsylvania, young canvassers said Brooklyn brushed aside their on-the-ground observations that Trump was more appealing than the campaign’s beloved data was indicating. And in Wisconsin, when Clinton failed to show up to a single Wisconsin college between the Democratic National Convention and Election Day, Wisconsinites, young and old, returned the favor. Trump won the state by less than 23,000 votes. Green Party candidate Jill Stein got 31,000 votes.
In the months after the 2018 midterms,Rachel Haltom-Irwin, Barack Obama’s 2012 get-out-the-vote director, presented an idea to the Democratic National Committeefor a national college student training program that would center on the swing state ground game and make efficient use of young activists. Called Organizing Corps, the multimillion-dollar program targets mostly students of color. This past summer, the program trained 300 students in an Atlanta classroom, and then sent them back to their swing states with instructors who continued to coach them on the ground for another seven weeks. The process is designed to resemble a “medical residency,” Haltom-Irwin said. There are currently 25 members in Arizona. More young Arizonians will be trained in Tempe in January.
On the Republican side, a similar interest in college students has surfaced but for the opposite reason. Although polls showed that support for Trump among younger voters was dismal, he surpassed expectations, earning 37 percent of the millennial vote, exactly what Mitt Romney had gotten in 2012. Trump did particularly well with young white males. Turning Point’s Kirk, who had spent months on the trail advocating for the president, believed the election was a sign. “The president won and a lot of young people who love our country realized he was looking out for us,” Kirk told me. “He was restoring the idea of America, our values and our pride.”
Weeks after the election, Trump’s staff began meeting with the leaders of student youth groups to explore how issues around campus speech could be pushed to generate more support for a president who was already developing an unlikely cult following among certain young, mostly white evangelicals and hardliners who related to his resistance to “PC” culture. They saw him as a rebellious rabble-rouser bucking a liberal establishment that had been snubbing them since they’d arrived on their campuses. Buoyed by the momentum, groups like Prager University, a conservative website that produces videos designed for young undecideds, looked to expand their reach. And the Leadership Institute reformulated a two-day training program so they could take it on the road to the growing number of conservative student conferences.
But it was Turning Point, the group that has touted as its mission for seven years “to identify, educate, train and organize students to promote the principles of freedom, free markets and limited government” that saw the most drastic uptick. The group says it will have increased the number of its chapters to more than 600 by this fall. Members didn’t see Trump’s win as a victorious ending, but the beginning of a new movement to return conservative ideas to their campuses.
Nowhere has this uptick been more pronounced than in Arizona. On one side is a pack of heavily energized progressive organizations that sprouted to life in 2010 on high school and college campuses as a response to the state’s crackdown on undocumented residents, led by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. During the 2018 midterms, these young activists helped to elect a new secretary of state and a new schools superintendent, the first Democrats to hold those offices in decades. They began to believe that if they could strengthen their campus ground game even more, especially at schools like ASU, they might be able to play a significant role in defeating Trump in Arizona in 2020.
On the other side is a group of young Arizona conservatives driven by Tyler Bowyer, an ASU grad who landed a seat on Arizona’s Board of Regents in 2011. In 2016, Trump’s victory felt to Bowyer like a personal one. While leading the Republican Party of Maricopa County, the largest in the state, he had organized one of the nation’s first Trump for president rallies. Shortly after the election, when Kirk went looking for a place to build out Turning Point’s headquarters, Bowyer had already been hired to develop a leadership program for the nonprofit and was building Turning Point’s West Coast presence. Kirk chose Arizona, at Bowyer’s prodding, and hired him to run the organization’s daily operations from his home state.
Turning Point’s headquartersare in a warehouse in an office park purposefully situated a mere 10 minutes from the Phoenix Airport, so students from other campuses can easily fly in and out for three- and four-day training sessions. It buzzes with the activity of dozens of young employees, many of whom recently graduated from ASU. WhenI arrived on an early October morning, passing through a carpeted entryway, I was ushered into a conference room that overlooks one of Phoenix’s jagged mountain ranges, decorated with photos of a beaming Kirk—with Trump, with Kellyanne Conway, with Jordan Peterson. There I met Bowyer, an effervescent 34-year-old wearing jeans, a baseball cap and a fleece jacket with Turning Point’s logo on the lapel. He was on the phone with the White House, he said, discussing plans for a black leadership summit booked for that weekend where black college students were scheduled to meet the president, which they did.
Many conservative donors and Turning Point members believe, seemingly rightly, that campuses and the professors that teach on them aren’t just pushers of liberal thought, but promoters of the Democratic Party platform. The place is studded with framed posters and placards taped to cubicles that bash the political leanings of the average campus progressive: “Taxation is Theft,” and “If socialism is so great why don’t people flee from Florida to Cuba?” There are desk chairs draped in American flag quilts and little elephant statues, a nod to the Grand Old Party mascot, scattered about.
When I was there several young, casually dressed staffers were inputting data on the 600-plus chapters regional directors were helping to develop, collecting the names and phone numbers of hundreds of young conservatives. In front of oversized computer screens, graphic designers mulled color schemes and fonts—using specs found in a 126-page brand guide for Turning Point—for material that is mailed to campuses across the country. This headquarters is also where Turning Point oversees its Professor Watch list, a controversial online archive of college and university professors who are said to have expressed rage at the president or dismay at right-wing policies.
Turning Point has a professional TV studio that feeds directly to Fox News and a huge production area where editors design memes and videos that take down campus “snowflakes” and leftist politicians. In the back, Alex Clark, the ripped-jean wearing host of Poplitics, a five-minute multi-platform show that Turning Point launched late last month, was finishing up the editing of her first episode.
I stepped into the office of the events administrator, Gage Huber, who was planning the group’s upcoming annual summit, held every December at the West Palm Beach Convention Center. A list of needed purchases—lighting, grass carpeting, new furniture—was hastily scrawled on a white board next to the words: Sense of Urgency. This year’s summit, Huber told me, was going for the look and feel of Coachella, the music festival. There are 5,000 expected attendees, and Turning Point says it has reserved rooms in seven hotels to house them.
Students for Trump, the group’s newly formed political arm, Bowyer made a point of telling me, would be opening in a few days in a warehouse across the parking lot. It would be organized in much the same way as its sister organization, with paid staff members in all 50 states, divided up by regions and territories, using the same methodology to determine what types of communications best persuade college students. Most of its efforts, he told me, would be clustered on large campuses in the 2020 battleground states.
He propped up a large, color-coded posterboard map of the country carved up into regions and later showed me a flow chart of the group’s employees. The same structure would be used for Students for Trump.
“We are going to run this thing like a midsize sales company,” Bowyer said.
Studies of donor patterns suggest that Republican groups are better than their Democratic counterparts at soliciting funds early for upcoming elections. That fundraising edge is probably why Turning Point feels like it is hurdling headfirst into the social media obsessed future, while its local progressive rival, One Arizona, resembles a lightly staffed suburban accounting firm. An umbrella organization that helps coordinate the state’s progressive groups, One Arizona does its work 12 miles away, on the top floor of a 1970s-era brick and stucco office building, in a suite of carpeted offices above Arizona’s school employees union.
But One Arizona’s drab offices mask a sophisticated operation that, like Students for Trump, carefully tracks what get-out-the-vote tactics—doors, phones, digital ads, mail, radio—work best. On both sides, nothing in this regard is left to chance. Bowyer’s team at Turning Point have spent hours exploring what colors elicit the warmest response, in-person and online (“Green,” he told me), or what kind of tone should be used for a video designed to change a 20-something’s opinion. (“Keep it as simple as possible, as acceptable as possible, as tongue-in-cheek as possible. That’s what’s going to be shared,” he said.) The research is mixed on whether a young person with undeveloped views about which side to vote for wants to hear his peers bash Elizabeth Warren or pump up Trump. Not mixed is how much fear of “socialism” resonates with young, middle-of-the-road voters. And a greasy hipster is a good way to elicit annoyance about sloppy complainers who don’t want to work very hard. “There aren’t that many of them,” Bowyer said. “But everyone knows one.”
“It doesn’t necessarily work with this generation to make voting a political thing,” said Baumann, the Global Strategy Group pollster. “Many young people believe that politics is broken and not working. You don’t want to remind them of something they don’t like. You want to make voting a positive, empowering, community experience.”
Yet at the same time, campus politics and national politics seem to have merged. On a Sunday in early November, Turning Point fans in Arizona and across the country celebrated “MAGA Pride Day,” a predictable stab at college Pride celebrations, as part of the official launch of Students for Trump. Students tossed their red MAGA hats in the air and posted their photos online. On the winter schedule are a roster of campus stopovers for Kirk and Don Jr., who made a series of college visits in the past few weeks to talk about Biden and impeachment and to rile up Democrats over the $50,000 the University of Florida at Gainesville spent to have him and Guilfoyle show up.
The results of that tour, however, have been checkered. Don Jr. was booed off the stage not long ago at the University of California at Los Angeles during an event to promote his new book,Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us. In that case, the alt-right did the booing. But Don Jr. is unsurprisingly getting it from all sides. This week, Michael C. Murphy, the student body president who invited him to speak at the University of Florida, was accused of “malfeasance” and “abuse of power,” theTampa Bay Timesand the university’s independent student newspaper theAlligatorreported, for deploying student fees to pay for the appearance.
Like the rest of American life, basically everything has become a part of, or a response to, the Trump show. At the University of Florida, a student senator said the student president “colluded,” not with Russia or Ukraine in this case, but “with a member of the Donald Trump campaign.” The remedy, naturally, is a resolution of impeachment.

They whisper to various other girls, begin rumors as well as they deal with each other's appeals and also outfits. That assists him to rest and also especially after a day that wasn't that suitable for him, this assists him to really feel a lot far better. My scenery on guys in pantyhose had my general viewpoints on men in ladies's clothes which generally started when I fell for a guy that showed up to me. That resided in my early 20s.
Thereby develops a seasonal complication in administrative as well as pedagogical technique: Should "complication children" be actually isolated in distinct colleges and also different training class where teams from unadjusted and also overdue boys are actually bulked all together, or should they be brought as long as possible right into exposure to regular kids in the regular schools? Therefore frequently right now days our company read about younger moms and dads not disciplining their children enough. Sadly, a lot of women are actually brokening victim to these "hooligan adores" - they generally end up mentally and often even physically over used. In light of Fischer's brilliant #BodyHairDay, our experts have actually assembled graphics women have published on Twitter and also Instagram from their stunning, all-natural body hair. A knight-themed special day celebration is well-known with youngsters which such as Mike the Knight or accounts of Street George as well as the monster. How a Dissatisfied Housewife Was Saved by Radical Performance (and a Xerox Machine)

In 1958, in the midst of an identity crisis, Californian artist Barbara T. Smith visited a psychotherapist for the first time. Smith, who was in her late twenties and married with children, later described the isolation she experienced as common. The first generation of American, college-educated women who married into domestic servility went into crisis; that crisis, in part, gave rise to second-wave feminism. Smith had previously attended Pomona College and studied painting, art history, and religion; she married two years before graduating in 1953, and quickly bore three children.
Smith’s therapist radicalized her, introducing her to Betty Friedan, Simone de Beauvoir, and a variety of other writers and theorists. Psychotherapy prompted an artistic revolution: “My entire consciousness had changed,” Smith said.
In the mid-1960s, as her marriage broke down, Smith made a radical move to install a 914-model Xerox copy machine in her house to make art. Xerox offered revolutionary technology to ordinary people, enabling them to make copies, transfer information, and self-publish—a scan from a glass plate caused electronically charged particles to fall in the exact same configuration as the original.

Xerox enabled Smith to make art out of her everyday life during the trauma of her divorce in 1968, and the ensuing loss of custody over her children. She produced prolific numbers of images which she bound into books, photocopying everyday objects, plants, and ephemera—as well as her own body, and those of her children. Some were printed on white paper, others on pastel pink, baby blue, and light orange sheets, creating delicate, haunting, fragmented images—faded memories of moments in time. One could argue that with the Xerox machine, Smith created some of the earliest performances staged using a photocopier, documenting her own body as an erotic object in works like Do Not Touch (1966), a grainy image of her exposed clitoris.
Post-divorce, Smith enrolled in the MFA program at the University of California, Irvine. There, she met an important group of peers who were experimenting with performance, media, and site-specific work, including Nancy Buchanan and Chris Burden—with whom she founded the artist run gallery F-Space, where Burden’s infamous performance Shoot was staged in 1971.
Smith’s interest in performance and interdisciplinary work was cemented when she attended an experimental theater workshop led by Judson Church dancer Alex Hay. Hay’s workshop pushed Smith to realize that the curious actions forming in her mind were valid. Emboldened, Smith created the environmental sculpture Field Piece (1968–72), part of which was presented at F-Space in 1971, before the full installation was shown at Cirrus Gallery. The work comprised 180 semi-flexible, fiberglass, nine-and-a-half-foot tall columns in translucent colors—clear, orange, pink, yellow, and violet—that glowed via an internal light source, forming a dense, delicately industrial forest. Each column also contained a speaker, activated by sensors underneath a foam floor by the audience (also linked to the light) to emit a vibrating drone sound, making the viewer an integral part of its network.

A move into live performance shortly thereafter found Smith exploring the boundaries of audience-performer power dynamics with Feed Me (1973), staged at San Francisco’s Museum of Conceptual Art as part of the event “All Night Sculptures.” For one evening only, Smith sat nude inside the woman’s bathroom, which she outfitted with books, a mattress, pillows, and things the audience could “feed” her with: food, wine, marijuana, and massage oil. (An accompanying tape loop simply intoned “feed me, feed me.”)
Smith remained in control, as the participants—only one allowed in at a time—were instructed to negotiate her permission before taking action. Various accounts, by Smith and others, relay what occurred, from discussion and massage to consensual sexual intercourse with several men. Smith described the work as an act to create a positive, affirmative situation—using “feed me” to have her needs met, instead of enacting the stereotype of the nurturing woman. The performance was made in opposition to the male dominance she experienced in heterosexual relationships.
Feed Me could equally be viewed as a reductive act of sexual objectification, couched as radical feminist act, yet this is unfairly simplistic. Just a year later, Marina Abramović invited an audience to do whatever they wished to her during the performance Rhythm 0 (1974), resulting in sexual assault, and ending when a viewer placed a gun in her hand and tried to use her finger to pull the trigger. The difference between Smith’s affirmative experience and Abramović’s abusive nightmare are stark, yet both address the troubled power dynamics of female sexuality within a patriarchal society.
The positioning of women artists in relation to their male counterparts, and the largely male institutions both inhabited, was the subject of another iconoclastic performance by Smith: Birthdaze (1981), staged on her 50th birthday at the Tortue Gallery in Los Angeles. Smith invited male artists to collaborate by performing as alter egos—with Kim Jones (as Vietnam veteran Mudman), Paul McCarthy (as an androgynous bad boy), Allan Kaprow (as a sage patriarchal figure), and Victor Henderson (as a tantric sex partner), alongside Smith’s ex-lover Dick Kilgroe. Each performer had played a part in her artistic and personal transformation, blurring the boundary between art and real life.
Dressed as a feminine 1950s housewife, Smith began to tell her formation story—from sheltered homemaker to radical feminist artist and spiritualist—in a parody of the narrative of her life. The performance was structured in three parts: The first was a humorous take on Smith’s early experiences, in which McCarthy and Jones pawed at her purple dress on the gallery’s patio, groping her until she escaped over a fence. She soon returned on a motorcycle driven by Kilgroe—wearing Levi’s, a checked shirt, and a leather jacket—to play out an emotional conflict in which Kaprow, her artistic father figure, sat center stage on a chair, watching her passionately embrace Kilgroe.
Part three, staged in a small room inside the gallery, saw Smith guide Henderson through a long tantric sex ritual behind a translucent veil. Tantric transcendence aspires to the unification of polar opposites. Throughout, Smith directed the male artists to perform stereotypical tropes of masculine identity, to expose the systems of the male dominated art world she inhabited. Ultimately, through the tantric ritual—for which she acted as the teacher—Smith became a shamanic presence, embodying a kind of feminist quasi-spirituality, in an attempt to transcend these prescribed roles.

Throughout her career, Smith staunchly rejected the Modernist idea of the disembodied artist presenting an object to the disengaged spectator. As such, many of her performances were collaborative or participatory, such as Ritual Meal (1969), a highly staged dinner performance, or Celebration of the Holy Squash (1971), a parody of a religious ceremony in which a common vegetable was suddenly revered, poking fun at Californian New Age spirituality.
Smith also paid three women who frequented a park bench near Grandview Gallery to sit on a bench inside the gallery for a month, in Intimations of Immortality (1974)—a reaction to how elderly women, particularly the homeless, alcoholic, or addicted, existed on the invisible margins of L.A. society.
These pioneering performances are the overlooked predecessors of relational aesthetics that developed in the 1990s—when Rirkrit Tiravanija served food in a gallery, for instance, or Santiago Sierra paid a small group of homeless women the price of a night in a hostel to stand facing a wall in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern for a single day in 2008.

Since Smith’s early pioneering performances, she has continued to develop radical interdisciplinary work, using the material of her life to explore the politics of social systems. For example, she experimented with videophone technology for The 21st Century Odyssey (1991–93), in collaboration with her partner Dr. Roy Walford at Biosphere 2 in Arizona; in 1998, she performed The Audience at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, a monologue in honor of her son, Rick, who had died of AIDS. More recently, Smith used a flatbed scanner to capture multi-layered images of her face, hands, body, and other elements.
Much of the history of performance, and its theorization, involves an exploration of what authentic identity—versus performed identity—might mean. Smith’s work addresses the often polarized, fragmented identities that we perform, and considers how to bring the interiorized authentic self and the exterior constructed self together. Overall, the artist’s driving goal has been to examine socially constructed patterns of behavior, to create situations in which the participants break or transcend the internal feedback loops that control their own actions—and, importantly, to address the power structures we inhabit and perpetrate.
