Nick Mercer, a psychotherapist with the Philadelphia Association and former heroin addict, reflects on his experiences and the nature of addiction. His journey is depicted through a simple set of metaphors rather than the gritty realism we associate with documentary images of drug abuse.

Devil In The Room - sleep paralysis short video.

This is a film Carla made on sleep paralysis.

In the clip above Carla Mackinnon speaks of the authenticity of stop motion and how it Evokes a direct tactile experience. Her style of work is provocative and raw, she successfully creates a direct physical response her work.

She explores evoking this viewing experience through use of textures, space, camera work, lenses, effects, actors body and projection field. 

“I am exploring the use of ‘tangible territory’ (Stehlikova, 2012) within the evocative mode of animated documentary (Honess Roe, 2013). In particular, how stop-motion may be used to evoke physical and psychological states that cannot be conventionally recorded, through the use of materials that encourage haptic visuality and filmmaking techniques that trigger a physical audience response connecting the viewer to the subject.”

Stop motions use of familiar materials evoke its tactility and ability to evoke embodied memory. 

Films of this type don’t focus on a horizontal narrative like traditional films but mine & fully explore quality of specific memories, feelings or ideas.
