After the Colin Baker War Doctor story, I was in the mood for another adventure with him and Peri. I had probably read the “Missing Stories” Target novel of Mission to Magnus, but I hadn’t listened to this audio version. This was an interesting take on the Ice Warriors and I will always have a soft spot for Sil, having visited the set of Doctor Who during the filming of Vengeance on Varos. And unlike a lot of stories from the same period, the Doctor and Peri don’t spend the majority of the first episode talking/bitching in the TARDIS. On the other hand, it has a pretty casual attitude towards planetary devastation. I finished listening to Russell T Davies’ first Doctor Who story, written on spec in the mid-80s and completed by Scott Handcock from Davies’ notes. It feels very much like a story from this period of the show, with the Doctor and Mel pretty much taking half the story to connect up with the rest of the cast and a huge galactic threat from the villain with consequences that get explained away in one line. And it also feels like a classic RTD Doctor Who story, juxtaposing the wonderful and grand with the mundane realities of every day life, and a villain motivated by something petty like greed. It’s interesting, listening to this story originally intended to be filmed 35 years ago. It would have sat comfortably alongside stories like Vengeance on Varos or Revelation of the Daleks, and that’s an era that I love. (I even got to visit the Doctor Who set during the recording of Vengeance on Varos!) Listening to it today, it’s clear how the characters and styles have developed after 20 years of @bigfinishprod stories. This certainly does a great job recreating how the show felt in the 1980s, right around Colin Baker’s first season! I was at the height of my adolescent fandom phase, when nothing brought me greater pleasure than Doctor Who, and this story took me right back to those days. Finished this up today! I’m still not thrilled with the whole “trapped in an artificial reality” premise, but there were some nice twists and character moments, so it was still worthwhile. Back on the treadmill and back to work today. And also back to the 1980s, since this was a story proposed for the series back then, but never made! I’ll admit, the initial concept—folks stuck in an artificial reality with no way to get them out—is not a particular favorite, but by the end of the second episode I was caught up in the story.
