Me in college: every piece I write must be entirely novel in every conceivable way even if I have to spend the entire night smacking my head against the piano keys until genius strikes (and then it does not)
Me now: C major. Default tempo in the DAW. Pentatonic scale. It sounds nice. It sounds original. I am proud of it. No head smacky.
