Warning Signs That Your Dog Has a Heart Problem| Cesar's Way
Tumblr media
Like people, dogs can suffer from heart issues; if the problems are serious, they can even die. Protect your dog’s heart health by knowing the common signs and causes, learning how to keep their heart strong, and what to do if a problem exists. There are several warning signs that your dog may have a heart problem, the most telling being sudden collapse and difficulty breathing. If your dog experiences these symptoms and exhibits other symptoms, such as fever or lethargy, they likely have a heart problem. If your dog does not recover within a day or two, please schedule a vet visit for a complete exam.
Common Symptoms of Heart Disease in Dogs
There are several possible symptoms you may notice if your dog has heart problems. Many can be related to other causes, but if a number of these symptoms present together, heart issues are more likely. Vomiting A poor appetite often accompanies this. Swollen belly Typically from a fluid buildup in his organs — including his lungs. Fatigue Your dog is getting tired more quickly than usual or refusing to play. Fainting Because not enough blood can get to the brain. Fever The normal body temperature of a dog ranges from 99.5 °F to 102.5 °F (37.5 C° to 93.1 C°). A body temperature of at least 103.5 °F (39.7 °C) indicates fever. Increase in heart rate In critical cases, you can observe this by simply laying your hand on your dog’s chest. Excessive coughing Especially while or right after exercising or an hour or two before bedtime. Breathing heavily Showing difficulty breathing or while exercising. Loss of weight Weight loss happens with heart disease because your dog loses its ability to store healthy fat. Discomfort You may notice your dog pacing more than usual and avoiding laying down due to pain. Bluish-gray tongue or gums This is due to the poor flow of oxygen.
Common Causes of Heart Issues in Dogs
Heart issues in dogs can come up for various reasons, some of which are genetic and others that are more lifestyle related. For example, breeds like Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds are predisposed to heart disease because of their size and weight, but smaller species can also get it if they have the wrong diet or suffer from obesity. On the other hand, dogs who lead a sedentary lifestyle with low physical activity levels will be at higher risk for developing heart disease. All of these factors, in addition to the ones below, make it essential to monitor your pet’s weight and activity level so that they can enjoy a long and healthy life.  Old Age Just as with people, the hearts of dogs get weaker as they age. Aging can lead to several different health problems. Injury If your dog is hurt in specific ways, it can damage her heart or cause added pressure that forces the heart to work harder — for example, a broken rib. Infection Various types of infections are known to cause heart damage. These include bacterial infection of the membrane around the heart, parvovirus, Lyme disease, and Chagas’ disease. Diet A poor diet high in fat can make it much more likely for your dog to develop heart problems — especially if you allow them to grow obese. Exercise Dogs need exercise, but you also have to know their limits. If you put too much strain on a dog’s heart, it can cause problems. Breed Some breeds are just more susceptible to heart issues than others. It’s a long list, so consult your veterinarian about your breed or breed mix. The top six dogs on the list, susceptible to three or more likely heart conditions, are the German shepherd, boxer, cocker Spaniel, Great Dane, Labrador retriever, and Rottweiler.

General Tips for Canine Heart Health
Want to keep your dog’s heart healthy for as long as possible? While it’s impossible to prevent heart disease in every case, there are things you can do to decrease your dog’s odds of developing cardiac issues. Maintain Proper Body Weight If a dog is overweight, it means that his heart has to work harder, and it will be more likely to develop issues. Ask your vet for dietary help and suggestions to help your pup lose excess weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Engage in Regular Exercise Consider first your dog’s abilities. Even if you start slowly, work your way up gradually and pay attention to your dog’s specific needs. Regular exercise will make her heart stronger. In addition to a stronger heart, you will notice a decrease in behavioral problems such as chewing, barking, digging, and excessive licking. Pay Attention Watch for the signs and symptoms shared in this article. Your vet should always check for signs of a heart murmur or abnormal rhythm. Be sure to ask your vet about it and follow her advice. Go to the Vet Regular vet checkups are vital to keeping your dog’s heart healthy. Time is of the essence when it comes to cardiac problems. If you suspect that there is a heart issue, don’t delay! Get to the vet immediately for a proper diagnosis and the most appropriate treatment.
Tips for Caring for a Dog with Heart Disease
The sooner the disease is detected, the better chance your furry friend will have of living with little to no pain. Your pet provider can develop a care plan that enables them to enjoy life. Be Mindful of Treats Many dogs with this condition should not be fed human food or a lot of treats. These animals usually have trouble digesting food, and it is best to stick with a set diet. It is also necessary to monitor how much they eat so they do not gain weight which would cause extra stress on their heart. Monitor Salt Intake A side effect of heart disease is swollen belly and water in the lungs. A low-salt diet can help lower this symptom so your dog can sleep and exercise comfortably. Medicine Treatment for dogs with heart disease usually consists of medication to regulate their heartbeat and reduce fluid buildup in the lungs. Your veterinarian may also prescribe additional treatment that could lengthen your dog’s life expectancy, providing them with a healthier lifestyle day-to-day. Pacemaker Some veterinarians may feel comfortable implanting a pacemaker inside your pet’s body to regulate its irregular heartbeat. Pacemakers are most often used for young pets born with congenital heart conditions requiring medication or surgical solutions at an early age. Older pets are not recommended for this procedure because it would be too traumatic for their aging bodies. Supplements Some dogs who suffer from heart disease do exceptionally well with vitamin B supplements. Amino acid supplementation and Vitamin E help them to digest food properly, as well as provide enough energy so they can sleep better. Simple supplements such as these are often available for an affordable price and offer relief for many symptoms of the disorder at any stage of it. Does your dog suffer from a heart problem? Knee pain relief by regenerative medicine
Your knees might be unexpectedly affected by accidents and illnesses. There is frequently nothing you can do to prevent them. That offers a compelling argument for maintaining good knee health so that, in the event of injuries or arthritis pain discomfort, they can fight back. Unfortunately, a lot of people unknowingly act in the exact opposite way. Simple, commonplace decisions that might appear innocent could be harming your knees.
Knee pain is a common problem. It can be caused by several things, including arthritis pain, injuries, and sports injuries. In some cases, knee pain may be due to degenerative changes in the joint. There are several different treatments for knee pain. Some people try traditional methods like medications. Others wonder how to start searching for regenerative medicine near me. This is because regenerative medicine has obvious advantages such as improving quality of life and the outcomes are long-lasting. Below are the causes of knee pain:
Know the causes of pain before searching for regenerative medicine
Bad choice of shoes: Whatever footwear you put on serves as the base for your body as a whole. Your posture and biomechanics are influenced by the type, style, and construction of your shoes, and even slight shoe abnormalities can lead to serious concerns with your knees, hips, and back. Flip-flops and high heels are two of the worst shoe styles. Your body's weight distribution, including your knees, is off when wearing high heels. Your ankles and knees are forced to pronate when wearing flip-flops or flats because they lack enough arch support.
Pavement pounding: Exercise is good for your knees, provided your workout doesn't treat them like jackhammers. Your knee joints are subjected to a lot of force when you play basketball, volleyball, and run. When you're a teen or a young adult, that can be okay, but as the years move, the relentless pounding can wear you down. If your preferred workout puts too much stress on your knee joints, attempt to reduce the amount of time you spend doing it and try to do it on a surface that absorbs shock, like grass or asphalt. Knee injuries are common on paved surfaces.
Too much weight being carried: If you're overweight, you're probably sick of hearing about the numerous health hazards because you already know about them. Sadly, you'll have to include your knees in the list of problems that can arise from carrying too much weight. Your knees are directly impacted by the daily strain of carrying additional weight since it causes inflammation and increases your risk of developing disorders that can harm them. The good news is that decreasing weight might start working right away: If you drop just one pound, the tension on your knees is reduced by four pounds. Do the math: If you lose 10 pounds, your knee joints will be less stressed by 40 pounds, and so on.
Excessive sitting down Knee pain can result from pounding the pavement, but sitting about and adopting a sedentary lifestyle may be worse. Exercise is essential for maintaining the health of every system in your body, including the knee joints. Regular exercise improves flexibility, enhances flexibility, strengthens support muscles, and promotes circulation.

Please tell me your thoughts on Ed + chronic pain!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(@sweetcheese1 @mhaccunoval ) thank you all for indulging me! putting it under the cut because it got long:
okay, so first off, my headcanon for what type of chronic pain ed has: i think he has hypermobility-related chronic pain. most people who are hypermobile (around 10% of the population is hypermobile, and it's usually something you're born with, with a decent link to genetic inheritance, but it can be developed through, say, gymnastics) do not develop any sort of related chronic pain, but in some people, it does happen (hi! that's me! i don't have a specific disorder like EDS though, i just have hypermobility and hypermobility-related chronic pain). basically, the joints are "loose", (this can mean they experience partial or full dislocations, known as subluxations (this is what happens with, say, hEDS (hypermobile ehlers-danlos syndrome)) and your muscles have to overcompensate to try and keep them in place—which is what leads to chronic pain.
one of the things that happens when you have hypermobility-related chronic pain is that high-impact activities (think running or ball sports, but it can also mean, like, a lot of walking) make things, uh. worse. like, leave you in bed for the rest of the day or multiple days kind of worse, depending on how bad your baseline pain is, and can also make things permanently worse. for me, things were pretty manageable (like a two on average) up until i started having to do ball sports in school, which made things worse, to the point where i am at about a four or five on a daily average.
i personally think that ed probably also had pretty manageable symptoms as a child—probably his worst areas were his spine/back and legs, since those are typically what's under the most strain. however, pirating isn't exactly a low-impact lifestyle—so, i think this probably made things a good deal worse. starting off at the lower levels of the ship hierarchy (cabin boy and swabbie, for example) would also mean he'd be putting his body under more stress than most of the others on the ship, and then, of course, there's the "regular" pirating activities of raiding ships, and fights.
ed, obviously, wouldn't really have been able to take a break to recover. additionally, even after he became a captain in his own right, i think it's safe to say that he'd convinced himself that showing weakness was absolutely not the done thing (not to mention how much worse izzy probably made it), especially since he's blackbeard, basically the pirate epitome of hale and hearty and terrifyingly physically capable. he's unlikely to have done things like, again, take time to just recover, or to draw himself a hot bath at the end of the day. all of this would definitely make things worse for him—he's probably residing around a six or seven on average pain-wise just on a day to day basis.
that brings me to two points: knee braces and smoking. i believe that the area worse-effected for him is his knees, but, more specifically, his left knee. I think it's entirely possible that at some point, his knee simply couldn't take the strain anymore, and he had to support it in some way, just to be able to walk, let alone do things like run around during raids—hence the knee brace. given the time, it wasn't really possible for him to get anything professional, but his contraption on his leg looks fairly similar to the knee brace below, which is specifically meant to stabilise the joint (i've included a tweet with photos of ed's knee brace as well for comparison). anyway, second point: smoking! as you probably know, marijuana can be used to relieve pain. i personally have never used it, so i can't vouch for it, and from what i understand, it varies from person to person. on that note, ed's been shown to smoke a couple different times in canon, and personally, i think that's what he's doing, in lieu of pain medications (most of which either didn't exist, or he wouldn't have had access to, like laudanum)—in fact, aside from the knee brace, it might be the only way he's willing to manage his pain, since smoking is already an acceptable activity in his social sphere. i don't think he uses a cane at all pre-canon, despite how helpful it can be, because it's a much more visible sign of his "weakness", especially with how he would have to use it continuously, as opposed to the knee brace, which can be brushed off as merely an accessory by someone who doesn't know any better. (izzy uses a cane in 1.10, but for him, this is a temporary situation, and i really doubt he's happy about it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now, getting into my other headcanons! for starters, i think stede notices ed's pain after a bit. it's not incredibly obvious or anything, but after a while of being on the same ship, stede starts to notice the way ed will wince slightly with each step after a long day, or the way he holds himself very carefully so as not to exacerbate his back. also, stede's not an idiot, despite his ineptitude as a pirate, so it doesn't take him long to realise the real purpose of the knee brace—i think this probably happens after the party in 1.05, where ed spends all day without it, so afterwards, he's pretty much limping, and it carries over into the next day or so, though not as noticeable with the brace—stede's probably the only one who puts the pieces together on this, with the others on the ship probably assuming he's aggravated an injury from a fight or something that'll pass in a day or two. stede begins to draw ed baths after particularly long days to help with the pain, with the excuse that it's good for ed's skin, or something (he probably has multiple excuses, actually, and probably also uses one somewhere along the lines of "it's what a gentleman does").
also, on the note of canon: i think that his time with stede aboard the revenge works to undo some of his shame and internalised ableism in regards to his chronic pain. he doesn't fully get rid of it or anything, but i think that, at least, he does start drawing baths of his own volition, and taking time to rest instead of diving full throttle into the next raid, or swordfighting lessons with stede, or what have you. i think he's aware that stede knows at least some of what's going on, but they never talk about it.
1.10/post-breakup era definitely sees him slide back into old habits, but possibly even worse—he let stede see this incredibly vulnerable part of himself in being just ed, and the chronic pain is definitely a part of that vulnerability. beyond the knee brace, i think he really stops doing anything to try and mitigate the pain—he instead tries to fight through it, because he figures, yeah, it'll make things worse in the long run, and it hurts like hell, but the kraken can't show any weakness, and he'll probably be killed in battle before that becomes a problem (oh, ed, beloved, you really do not have a healthy relationship to this shit).
and, finally, post-reunion! it definitely takes a while for him to start trusting stede again, but once he does, they slip back into the routine of stede drawing ed baths. however, at this point they've realised that, actually, communication is really important, so i think that, very grudgingly, ed does talk about it. after a while, he finally manages to peel back the "well, i'm going to die, so the pain doesn't matter" attitude, and begins to take things easier. trusting stede also eventually leads to him asking if stede would be willing to help him relieve some of the pain when things get especially bad through massages (stede read up on it after realising what ed was going through and mentioned the knowledge offhand), which stede is more than happy to do. it also helps a lot that they've somewhat retired from piracy—they still raid ships, but they don't do much fuckery or risky raids, and when they do, they leave most of it to the crew (fuckery is high-impact by, like, every definition of the word. i can't imagine doing any of it myself because i know how taxing it would be). finally! ed eventually gets a cane! his original one is a pretty standard, black walking cane, without any embellishments, but for their anniversary, stede has a slightly fancier one commissioned—it's not super ostentatious or anything, but it does have a carved handle with an arctic tern on it, and at its base there's a band of metal that matches the rings that they exchanged when they decided to commit to a long-term relationship.

I got you (Platonic)
Tumblr media
Requested by @emcon-imagines
“Jemma --” Daisy said, as much as she loved her friend, she knew that she still wasn’t at the top of her lying game. To be honest, she hoped that Jemma never made it there, as if that would signal some sort of end to the Jemma Simmons she knew.
Still, back on point, “Daisy...I promised Y/N…” She said. And, that did get her attention, she had promised you something.
“I just wanna help her, Simmons. I mean, you’ve seen her...Tired, not herself. Not the bubbly person we all know. Something’s going on…” She knew how this would seem to anyone else; someone interrogating someone, almost gaslighting in some way to get some information.
But, the two women knew better; it was two friends trying to help another.
Besides, the three had formed their own group; the term “power puffs” being thrown around a lot. Still, not the point --
“I didn’t just swear and drop my concern, Daisy. I wanted to help too…” She trailed off, and Daisy nodded for her to continue, “I did to her that she would probably get yelled at...but, she brushed it off at the time. I don’t think Fitz’s sarcasm helped it either.”
“What’d he say?”
“‘What’s the worst thing that could happen? I mean, yeah, you’ll probably get yelled at, but it’s not like she’s going to kill you.’ And I said, ‘Not helping’ and...Oh, sorry.” She said, catching herself.
Daisy smiled, “It’s alright, Jem. Just, tell me, please. I’ll stop after that.”
Jemma could never say now the puppy dog expression Daisy Johnson could pull off, “...That’s the problem, she isn’t stopping. But, she told me to not bother you about it. She knows how you can be with this and...she doesn’t want to worry anyone else. She says she can handle it.” The Brit said, almost in one entire breath.
“Famous last words, sadly in some cases.” Daisy said, looking out the window before back to Jemma, “Where is she now?”
As Jemma went to answer, her gaze changed; she looked alert, “Well...there.” She said, nodding her head behind Daisy.
The woman turned, seeing you walk in, bag over your shoulder from yet another assignment...yet another few months undercover.
If you were good at hiding the strain of the work before, this was not one of those times; with the heaviness in your eyes, worn down expression and posture of your body.
It was getting to you.
Daisy then looked to Jemma, giving her friend a pat on the arm, “I got this.” She promised, before taking her leave.
She wasn’t one to break them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You had put the weapons away, and was getting ready for the ebrie. Just ready to get that ticked off, then wait until the next job comes your way. You had to keep going, SHIELD was always cut throat, but especially now; you were on the back foot and what not. You had to prove yourself to Coulson, he brought you and Daisy in and kept you in despite what you had done to them.
That had to be worth something.
You went with your bag, a bag mixed with your own things and the contents of the sting. Smart? No, not really. But, you were working with limited time. So, you know.
Besides, Coulson had cleared it and said it was fine.
So, you went into the kitchen, gonna go upstairs to get it all done with, when you paused…
There, on her laptop, was your sister, just typing away.
Given the fact of the bottle of water she had was only just opened, you had to guess that she had only just set up.
“Hey.” She said, looking up at you from the table, smiling as if you hadn’t caught her in the act.
“Hey.” You said back, dropping the bag to the floor. You both held each others stare for a moment too long; you had been in each others lives for forever, so you could read each other like a book.
“Been there long?” You asked, hands going in your pocket. You knew the answer, but still…
“Nah, just waiting for you.” She said, moving to sitting on the table, legs dangling off of it, “Just wanted to see if you were ok.”
You held your arms out to your side for a moment, a kind of “here I am” gesture, before letting them slap against your body as you let them drop, “I’m ok...Just want to get up there.” You said, pinching your nose as you closed your eyes for a moment; a rare moment of letting this toll be known to the world in a way that was intentional.
Daisy saw a way in there, “You tired? I mean, sleep deprivation and mental health issues don’t really go hand in hand...You’re gonna snap.”
You nodded, same posture as before, “Sure. Just wanna get up there and do this, D.”
“Coulson doesn’t need it right now.”
“He does.” You argued.
She sighed, the Johnson gene of stubbornness surely rubbing off on you, “Look, Y/N/N, I get it. But, AC -- Well, DC, is more than ok with this. Trust me.”
“Yeah, well, I’ll do shit like that when you do.” Ok, fair; did it hit? Yeah, but she wasn’t a sunken battleship yet...that phrase was weird.
Anyways, “Y/N,” She started, getting up and grabbing your hands in her own, looking you right in the eyes, “You’re tired, ok? Actually tired….I mean, look, you can barely stand right now. What you need, is rest. Ok?”
Out of the siblings, you weren’t as open as she was. But, as said before, she knew you better than anyone else. And, because of that, you could be yourself with her. You let yourself nod, eyes dropping to the ground. She squeezed your hands, smile coming onto her face.
It was like that Skye part of her, the inner child of her’s that needed healing was alway there; the optimist that refused to see the dark.
Still, she grabbed your bag, putting an arm around your shoulder, and leading you to your room.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your room was a fucking mess. Jesus, was it a mess. Now, Jemma had told Daisy that she had no one touch it; no one go in or even put their hand on the door knob.
But...it was messy, to say the least.
The two of you stood, silently looking at the state of your room; clothes everywhere, doors left open, bed sheets unorganised.
She heard your breath shudder a bit. It seemed you had forgotten that the room was left like this. Then again, she was sure you were almost leading two - well, now really more than two - lives at once; SHIELD, your own, and the many undercover personas you had to adapt to.
Hunter’s lecture about SHIELD not being a lifestyle but a job was true; granted, it was a belief in the world and the good that laid in it, but he still had a point.
It seemed for you, those two had fully blurred into on destructive, stress filled life. And it was slowly killing you.
You entered first, grabbing some clothes from the floor and going into your bathroom, locking the door.
She, meanwhile, went to your bed, smelling them and groaning at the stink that came from them.
She put the bag down, picking up some of your other clothes - less yours, more SHIELD’s clothes that they gave to operatives.
There was no style, only a branded shirt (some actually were, but that’s not the point) to say “Shoot at me, I’m with the people you guys at HYDRA hate!”
She put them away, the clothes coloured black. She remembered when you used to have a more colourful attire, an expression to who you were.
No, it was just SHIELD.
After the clothes had been sorted, she then sat on the floor, opening the bag. She looked up at the sound from your bathroom, a shower being turned on.
She looked back to the bag, seeing bags of cocaine, some files...and your clothes. One of the bags had a hole in, and some of the contents had gone from the bag and onto your own clothes. These ones were yours...now stained with coke.
With work…
The shower was still going. And she knew that you were devoted to these people...but what had you lost in the process?
She went further into the bag, digging deep into it. It took a few moments, but she found something, her fingers brushed against something…
Removing her hand from the bag, she found a necklace; she smiled, this one more nostalgic. It was a necklace that you had both gotten together with some money you had both saved. Inside there was a photo of the pair of you…
You’d kept it, you were still there.
She looked to the door, the shower was still going. She looked to the clothes...she could make a quick trip…
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She came back, clothes in her possession, but no bag. The bag was with Coulson, but the clothes and necklace she kept.
She came back in, putting the clothes on the bed. The door opened, and you emerged, now in sleep gear.
“Hey.” You said.
She smiled, “Hey.” She said back.
“Can - can you uh, can you stay for the night? Just...after all that, and what you said...I think I could use a break…?”
Her smile softened, “Of course.” She said.
You were still you...you still had your own life.
SHIELD wasn’t your lifestyle, just a belief in the world and a job.

Modern Bucky is fat and Steve’s sugar baby. Steve likes to spoil him. :3
eyy only took me a month and a half to answer 😂😂 I'm sorry, nonnie, but I'm highjacking your idea and using it for today's chubtober prompt :D
(I ended up having a lot more ideas for this than I could actually finish writing in time, so this ends pretty abruptly as soon as Steve and Bucky actually meet)
[unfinished] Oct 3: Masks and Malfunctions
Rating: Mature Words: 1911 Relationship: James “Bucky” Barnes/Steve Rogers Additional Tags: Sugar Daddy AU, Daddy Kink, Belly Kink, Weight Gain, Verbal Humiliation, Stuffing, Corsets, Age Gap
Bucky’s phone chimed and he didn’t even have to look at the screen to know that “Steve” just sent him more than enough money for the costume Bucky wanted. He didn’t actually know if that was the guy’s real name, but he’d been funding Bucky’s lifestyle since the beginning of college and Bucky wasn’t about to fuck that up by questioning the guy’s identity.
If this were a normal Halloween party Bucky would have just bought a random costume at Spirit Halloween, but his kinda boyfriend Jonas (it’s complicated) had invited him as a plus one to an actual masquerade ball. Bucky didn’t even know those kinds of things existed outside of fantasy novels, but right now he was at a high-end clothing store getting an “appropriate” costume.
[Bucky] Thank you, Daddy❤
Bucky texted Steve and then went back to trying on another dress shirt. This one had a looser cut that reminded him of something the male love interest in a period drama would wear or a pirate.
“Wonderful choice,” the store clerk told Bucky when he stepped back from the mirror. Bucky would probably never get used to having someone help him pick out clothes, but the higher-end stores Bucky had been to all offered this type of assistance.
“It drapes very well,” the clerk said with a sneer on his face. Bucky turned back to the mirror. Yes, he had to admit he’d fallen victim to the freshman 15. A small belly was rounding out even against the loose fabric of the shirt, but he didn’t actually feel self-conscious.
Steve had complimented him on every single one of those pounds. Bucky probably wouldn’t even have noticed all the changes to his body if Steve hadn’t been constantly talking about them. Bucky had never put much effort into maintaining his physique, but being hyped up by Steve over the smallest changes of his body made him feel desired and his heart fluttered every time his sugar daddy complimented his thicker thighs and soft belly.
“Any other suggestions?” Bucky asked and the clerk scoffed.
“A corset,” he muttered under his breath, but Bucky’s ears pricked up at the suggestion. His first instinct was to text Steve. Bucky didn’t know why it was important for him to know Steve’s opinion when Bucky was going to the party as someone else’s plus one, but excitement stirred in Bucky’s stomach at what Steve might say.
“Sure, get the corset.” Bucky sent the clerk on their way and then sat down to text Steve. He could feel his belly straining against the shirt buttons now that he was sitting down and he snapped a picture of the way the buttons on the otherwise loose shirt were straining over the thickest part of his belly.
[Bucky] Daddy~ they’re telling me I’m fat
[Bucky] they said I need a corset
[Steve] You will look incredible either way.
Annoyance prickled at the back of Bucky’s neck from the generic compliment.
[Bucky] that’s not what I asked
[Steve] You didn’t ask anything.
Bucky rolled his eyes at how literal Steve could sometimes be, but Bucky also didn’t know how to ask for what he really wanted to hear.
Some of his classmates had teased him for his weight gain and instead of making Bucky feel insecure, the hot shame had shot straight to his dick and he’d had to excuse himself to deal with the problem. Since then Bucky couldn’t stop thinking about Steve telling him those things.
Bucky didn’t even know what the guy looked like, but he’d quickly developed a crush just from texting him. It was actually fun to talk. Bucky couldn’t understand how the guy was single when he seemed like this perfect, interesting and kind guy—and rich on top of all that.
There has to be something wrong with him, but so far Bucky hadn’t been able to figure it out. Not for the first time Bucky wondered who Steve actually was, but his thoughts were interrupted when the clerk came back with three different corsets.
All the same material and color, just different cuts. Bucky’s eyes were immediately drawn to the tiny waist cincher—just tall enough to cover the widest part of his belly. Despite his grumblings the clerk helped Bucky lace up the corset and when he looked in the mirror he couldn’t believe it was him looking back.
His entire body shape seemed different. From the billowing sleeves of the shirt emphasizing his wide shoulders to the waist cincher doing an excellent job of making it look like he still had a waist instead of the soft belly that was hidden underneath. The simple black slacks he was wearing completed his outfit. Simple colors, just black and white.
The mask he had chosen matched as well. A deep midnight black that contrasted with his piercing blue eyes and gold detailing that caught the light when Bucky turned his head. He snapped another picture for Steve, but didn’t wait for his response. Bucky could still hardly believe that a single outfit could be this expensive, but Steve of course had transferred enough money to pay for it. On his way home Bucky finally checked his phone.
[Steve] What did I tell you? Incredible.
[Bucky] better than without the corset?
[Steve] This feels like a set-up.
Bucky groaned at Steve’s response. Of course, Bucky would luck out and get the sugar daddy that won’t humiliate him for gaining fifteen pounds before the semester was even over and wasn’t that a personal revelation. Bucky had never thought of himself as someone who could want something like this, but since gaining weight he had become more aware of his body—and how others perceived it.
[Bucky] it is
He quickly pocketed his phone after sending that text. Bucky immediately regretted it. He’d had a good thing going with Steve. Why risk fucking that up? His phone vibrated multiple times, but Bucky was too worried to check his messages until he got home. As soon as he’d closed the apartment door behind him he fished his phone out of his pocket.
[Steve] What does that mean?
[Steve] If you don’t want to continue this arrangement, you can just tell me.
[Steve] Bucky.
[Steve] Answer me.
[Steve] What do you want me to say? That you’re a spoiled pig? That you’ve gotten fat on your Daddy’s money and need a corset to look good for your little boytoy?
Bucky’s throat went dry as he read Steve’s message. The wave of lust that crashed through him, threw him off balance and he sat down heavily on the bench in the entry way of his apartment. He read the message again. And again. His dick gave an interested twitch. It was embarrassing how much he reacted to Steve’s words.
[Steve] Is that what you want?
[Steve] Don’t leave me on read.
Bucky didn’t know what to say. He typed and retyped the same message again until another one from Steve popped up.
[Steve] ‘Yes’ or ‘no’? It can’t be this hard to type one fucking word.
Bucky couldn’t breathe. Steve had always been kind and considerate, it made Bucky’s heart race to see this side of him.
[Bucky] Yes.
[Steve] Thank you, but we will talk more about this tomorrow.
Bucky’s phone chimed to tell him, he should be on his way now if he wanted to get to the party on time. His mind was still caught up in foggy arousal, his cock tenting his slacks. It’s too much, he wasn’t thinking straight and Steve wasn’t even here—wasn’t even touching him. Just a text and Bucky was a mess.
At least the walk to the subway station helped to clear Bucky’s head and chase away some of the immediate, burning need that had been burning in his guts just a few minutes earlier. It left him frustrated, but slightly more level-headed and in a more appropriate mood to be out in public.
When Bucky met up with Jonas outside the high-rise office building the guy was already wasted. He was surrounded by his office buddies and Bucky was honestly about to turn on his heel and go back home when Jonas called out to him. With all his mates there Jonas treated Bucky like another one of them and Bucky was already over the metaphorical dick-measuring contest that was happening whenever one of these guys opened their mouth.
Once they got inside Bucky split off from the group, Jonas didn’t even seem to notice. So, he explored the venue. The party stretched across multiple floors. The bottom floor was full of rich and wanna-be rich people schmoozing and socializing, barely anyone of them had stuck to the masquerade theme and Bucky kept debating whether he should take off his own mask.
He was much more comfortable on the upper floor. There were less people here and most of them kept to themselves. He felt less out of place when he noticed that most of the people here stuck to the masquerade theme, there were only a few people who’s face wasn’t at least partially hidden behind a mask.
Jonas didn’t even shoot him a quick text to ask where he had disappeared to, so Bucky was more than ready to just find whatever food this place offered, eat for free tonight and make the best of the situation. He didn’t know what he’d expected dating someone his age, but Bucky was done settling for anything and he made a resolution to break up whatever was going on between him and Jonas.
When Bucky finally found the buffet that was standard for these types of events, he couldn’t stop himself from loading up two plates and searching for a quiet, secluded place to eat. At this point it had become a reflex to send Steve a text whenever he sat down to stuff himself.
[Bucky] found the food
He sent a picture with his hand next to the plates to give Steve a sense of how big they were. Some guy’s phone went off as soon as Bucky hit send two tables over and for a moment Bucky wondered if that’s Steve.
He had a commanding presence even sitting down. Bucky could tell he’s a gym buff from his ridiculous shape. His shoulders looked almost double the size of his waist. As well as the large plate of food in front of him. This man needed to fuel his body with all those calories, but Bucky was eating more than him and only planning on getting fatter. Bucky dug in.
His little costume went from fitting perfectly fine to too tight within half a plate of food. The corset was throwing a wrench into Bucky’s plan of stuffing himself. He already felt full before he had even really gotten started. The blond guy from two tables over caught Bucky’s eye again. He was frowning at his phone and looking back up at Bucky.
[Steve] What are you doing here?
[Bucky] what do you mean?
Another phone chime from two tables down. Bucky re-read the text two times before he looked back at the blond guy. No way that’s Steve. That would be too much of a coincidence, right? Bucky sent another message and the guy’s phone went off again. For a moment Bucky contemplates just getting up and walking away, but then Steve was already out of his chair and walking up to Bucky’s table.

Pairing: Levi x Erwin x Mike x Thick!Reader/PlusSize!Reader
Summary: When you purchased your first home you’d anticipated it being a turning point in your life. You just didn’t anticipate that turn to give you whiplash.
A new home throws you into a new lifestyle you would have never thought you’d find yourself in-- with three men you’d never expected to be with.
Rated: Explicit [18+]
Main Tags: Polyamory/Polyamorous relationship, BDSM, Attack on Titain Modern AU, Slow Burn
A/N: Hey all, Just some things about the reader in this fic before you get invested:
I keep the reader ambiguous in appearance and use [y/n]. Use of [y/n] becomes minimal in favor of pet names as the story progresses.
One thing that is not ambiguous is that the reader is thick, you could also say plus sized though because that’s different in every country I favor the word thick. I also think its kind of a sexier adjective.
Reader has self consciousness issues and anxiety, both are being treated/have been treated through therapy. I keep it ambiguous as to whether or not the reader is still in therapy-- regardless the reader is insinuated to be far along and doing well in her treatment. Shout out to my peeps who are/have been in therapy, your mental health is important and you’re doing great no matter where you are in it.
Reader is in her mid to late 20′s because realistically purchasing a home before that is near impossible. Hell even in our 20′s its hard. I also wanted to give a little love to my thick girls in their later 20′s because we out here.
A lot of AOT reader inserts, if not completely ambiguous, often emphasize a super fit form. Which makes sense in the typical setting when the reader is in the AOT world and maybe a soldier-- but I wanted to give some love to our fuller body types. Maybe I just got tired of reading “...reader’s flat/muscular stomach...” and going-- ooh can’t relate! Haaa.
That being said, you can read this no matter what your body type because everyone’s perception of self is different-- I just wanted to give the heads up because the reader does struggle a bit with her sense of self in the story because of her body type as her self confidence continues to develop.
BDSM dynamics ultimately take place in this fic. Some are good BDSM practices/etiquette, some are not good. Professionals know the difference and this is not your guide to polyamory or BDSM. The poor etiquette will be rather obvious but if you’re interested in pursuing BDSM in your real life, please don’t use this work of fiction as gospel. Do your research and practice safely!
My fictional stories are for ADULTS. Do not read them if you are under the age of 18.
With all that out of the way, Please enjoy~
Chapter 1:
“I got this,” A panted breath.
“I got this,” A strained grunt.
“Nope I lied.” A loud thunk of a heavy box hitting green grass.
“Told ‘ya so.” The brunette breathlessly quipped from her position beside another box, her arms haphazardly flung over its surface. “Can we please take a break now?”
Admitting defeat, you fell in a heap on the lawn and nodded your head, but not before running your forearm across your sweaty brow. “Okay, yeah,” your reply was just as breathless although your friend had given up long before you. “Like five minutes.”
The other female placed her chin on the box, framing her head between her outstretched arms. “Okay, yeah, like fifteen minutes.” She echoed in a tired din, attempting to get you to thoughtlessly agree to her editing of the time.
Though tired with your legs and arms throbbing under the surface of your skin, you shook your head. “No Sasha,” you said firmly. Though it sounded like you were trying to convince yourself over her. “If we take longer than five minutes, we’re gonna quit and we’re almost done!” You gestured with an open palm to the admittedly small moving van parked in the street in front of you. You’d made good headway with it. It was amazing how much stuff you could fit in such a small van.
It was amazing how little space said stuff could take up in such a big home.
Well, big might be a little generous. It was by no means a mansion, certainly not as big as some of the other models on the same street, but it was bigger than your previous living conditions.
More importantly it was yours.
Yours.
You smiled, looking up at the bright sky above you, dotted with a few fluffy clouds.
Your first home.
Your heart sped up when you reminded yourself. You had doubts that it would ever happen. Saving enough money to put a down payment on a home without loans or handouts was no easy feat. But you did it, and that hard work had paid off in achieving your goal. Your down payment was enough to make the house payments bearable; though for the first few months you could see that a majority of your income would go back into the home either in the form of said payments, filling the home with furniture, or renovating some of the areas that needed love.
Like the front yard.
The front yard needed some love.
Not the lawn. The lawn was good. The lawn was providing you and Sasha with a much-needed reprieve. Yes, the lawn could stay.
You loved lawn.
Lawn loved you.
Until your arms started to itch. A less than intimidating growl left your lips as you quickly sat up, your nails digging into your skin as you scratched at it for some relief before flailing your arms about to try and save them from the irritation—as if you could shake it off your flesh.
“Back to work.” You chirped, making Sasha groan.
“Remind me what I’m getting out of this again?” She mumbled, her face planting itself back to the box to muffle her protests.
Kicking yourself up to standing, you looked over your shoulder with a playful smile, “I’m feeding you.” You reminded her.
After a long pause, perhaps letting your words sink in, Sasha released a huff, lifting her face and flexing her small arms in her baggy t-shirt. “Second wind!” she shrieked by way of a battle cry, her hands clenching the cube between her legs in a vice grip as she moved to a squat, yanking the box off of the pristine lawn.
Who would take such good care of a lawn but ignore the rest of the yard? The previous owner apparently. Then again, it made a bit of sense. It was easy to turn on a sprinkler system to keep a lawn looking fresh whereas the things you wanted to add would take work. Like flowers. You loved flowers. Though you’d struggle on and off with a potentially green thumb, unlike your mother who could make anything grow. Planting flowers was a must. You would work your way to the backyard. But the front yard was like a first impression and you wanted it to be pretty for when friends came over as well as for the strangers that passed by. You wanted people to say, “Oh what a cute house. Whoever bought it really spruced up the place. It looks much better. Oh, it so does, blah blah blah.” Should you care what other people said? No. But you were human. Besides, your mother always kept an immaculate home, you wanted to emulate her in the maintenance of your own home.
As always you were getting too ahead of yourself. You were thinking twelve steps beyond where you were. That could be dangerous. Such thoughts could stimulate anxiety. Something you were unfortunately prone to. You took a deep breath, stealing your resolve to focus on the present moment.
You lifted your gaze, letting it drag over the neighborhood. “Find every color.” You murmured to yourself.
Red, the roses on the bush two houses down.
Orange, the moving van.
Yellow, your shirt.
Green, the lawn.
Blue, the sky.
Purple, your struggled to find purple and made a note to plant some purple pansies to rectify that.
Pink, the flowers of the magnolia tree next door.
You took a deep breath. This was your favorite grounding exercise you’d learned from therapy. It forced you to stay in the moment, steel yourself, and stop racing thoughts—often times before they happened since now you were much better at recognizing the warning signs. It took a lot of work to get to this point. It was work you were proud of.
You took another breath.
First the van. Empty the van. One thing at a time.
A huffing and puffing Sasha stumbled down the shallow steps of the front door—your front door you though joyously—with her hands on her hips, bent slightly at the waist to pin you with judgement. “Excuse me? Am I do’n all the work around here?”
You smirked, nudging the box in front of you with the toe of your shoe, the memory of your struggle to lift it still fresh in your mind. You weren’t in a hurry for a repeat performance in spite of your hassling of Sasha. “Depends, how big of a meal you want?” You teased her.
The brunette scoffed. “If you want me to go at it alone then you better be treating me to a buffet.”
You giggled, though a twinge of envy settled in your chest. Sasha was a petite thing considering how much she ate. You were not. The fact that she could eat so much and still keep her shape while you struggled around your weight made you jealous. The thought of going to a buffet filled you with dread. You always wondered what people thought when they saw someone of thicker size stepping into one of those. It triggered the self-consciousness you were working on diminishing. It wasn’t as though you were lazy, ugly, or any other stereotypical term that so wrongly coincided with your set. Hell, you’d moved over half your old residence by yourself. You were strong! Your body could do amazing things. You just didn’t match the image plastered all over social media and society of what a woman “should” look like.
Size 0 mannequins could go fuck themselves.
You had hips, you had a butt, you had ample breasts—all things sexualized excessively in the female form—you just also had a little extra. Thick thighs, a bit of a tummy—society wanted you to have tits and an ass but when you had the addition that often went with those things naturally, you were frowned upon. It was a complete catch 22. However, society wasn’t going to change, not overnight. So instead you worked on yourself—or rather your perception of self. Therapy helped, but it was an everyday battle to combat two parts of your brain. The half that liked and appreciated the many elements of you, including your body—and the half that was an asshole.
Right now, the asshole was winning. Because of this you had no interest in taking Sasha to a buffet—which meant you had to actually pick up the box you were glaring at.
Bending over, you hoisted the box into your arms with refreshed energy and groaned as you started to your home. “Remind me again why we didn’t recruit the guys?” You mumbled; your voice strained with effort. You probably had books in there. Yeah that was absolutely the book box. Should have spaced those damn things out. What kinda dumb ass were you to put almost all of them in one box?
“Oh, it’s not that much and they’re working, we can totally handle it.” Sasha said, her voice mimicking yours as best it could, though laced heavy with sarcasm. “That’s you. That’s how you sounded.”
You were kicking yourself, “Talk some sense into me next time.” You called, over your shoulder, dropping the box just inside the door where it was going to stay until you either, one, had the energy to move it, or two, had finished putting up your half book shelf.
It was probably going to live there for a while.
“Already thinking about ‘next time’? Oh, no, you’re not moving for at least 10 years. You can’t get me to do this again before that.” Sasha said sternly when you walked back outside to meet her by the van. “I’ll book you for 10 years from now.” You agreed, leaning against the side of the vehicle while Sasha took a moment to fix her ponytail which had gone messy with her unloading efforts.
Walking around to the back of the moving van, you leaned down to pick up another box, a smaller one than the last and took a moment to look over what was left. Just a few bigger items. They were bulky but between the two of you they wouldn’t be difficult to manage. Getting the bed frame and headboard up the stairs was going to be a pain in the ass, luckily TV’s were thinner now so that would be easy to get inside, the bedside tables were small and each of you could carry one of those, the dresser was going to be a bit of a bitch…
You bit your lip, looking over the items and making a list of difficulty in your head. Once again you were filling your mind with ‘to-do’s. Luckily, a voice pulled you out of your own thoughts as you backed down the van’s slope.
“Hello girls!”
You turned around to see an older woman toddling down the driveway beside your own, holding a tray with cookies and two glasses of what appeared to be lemonade.
Putting on your best ‘first impression’ face, you gave the woman a bright smile and placed the box down at your feet to greet the woman who was undoubtably one of your new neighbors. “Hello ma’am,” you said politely. Sasha was too busy drooling over the cookies in the woman’s hands.
“Please, please, call me Della.” She said, lifting the tray in her hands to present the offering to you and Sasha, who was quick to snatch the lemonade and two cookies, chewing both of them at the same time with happy hums and grumbles. You nudged her with your elbow silently scolding her for bypassing the introduction process. Della waved you off, having noticed the subtle action. “She’s absolutely fine! I’m thrilled to have someone enjoy my baking so much.”
All the same, you introduced yourself before taking your own cookie. “It’s nice to meet you Della. I’m [y/n] and this is Sasha.” You took the tray from her and placed it on one of the taller boxes so you could shake the woman’s hand. “Thank you so much for the lemonade and treats.” How on earth had the woman baked that fast? You’d only been there about two hours and these cookies were absolutely fresh out of the oven. Clearly you were living next door to a witch. A kitchen witch. You were totally okay with that so long as she directed her baking powers on you regularly.
“These are amazing.” You mumbled around a mouthful of warm cookie, the flavor sitting on your tongue for a moment, only to have your pallet cleansed by the lemonade.
Della gave a bright smile, “Well thank you dear. It’s nice to have another darling couple to bake for.”
Sasha spit out the lemonade she was sipping, her eyes popping out of her head as she coughed.
You swallowed your bite to try and keep from choking yourself. “Oh! Oh gosh no. No Sasha is just helping me move in. She’s my best friend.” You clarified calmly.
Sasha was thumping her fist to her chest in an attempt to clear her esophagus. “Connie would kill me.” She managed to choke out between wheezes.
“I think he would be down.” You murmured around another sip of lemonade, teasing her.
Della however covered her mouth, looking a little embarrassed by her assumption. “I’m sorry I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions. I guess I’m just so used to our other neighbors.” she trailed off, gesturing to the house on the other side of yours. You took that to mean that your other neighbors were a gay couple.
You shook your head, “Don’t worry about it!” Honestly, you were pleasantly surprised to have an older woman be so openly accepting and progressive. Having a neighbor like that wouldn’t be half bad. Especially if she made a habit of sharing her cooked concoctions.
It seemed you’d managed to move to a rather well-rounded neighborhood. It made a smile tug at your lips.
“Will you be living alone, dear?” Della asked, smoothing her hands over the apron tied around her waist. The action cause tiny plumes of flour to drift in front of her before her green eyes came up to regard you with her full attention. It must be her way to ask if you had a significant other that would be moving in alongside you. To some it may seem prying, but you didn’t blame her for wanting to know a little more about the person living right next door to her.
Nodding your head, you reached for another cookie. You probably wouldn’t have normally, sometimes you felt odd eating in front of others— it might have something to do with your negative self-image—but in this case it seemed rude to not show how much you enjoyed the treats after your neighbor slaved over them for you. So, you justified the second as you answered her question. “Yep, just me.”
Humming her understanding, Della nodded in response. “Well don’t you worry. This is a very safe neighborhood. I’ve never felt nervous living alone.” She assured you.
It was not something you’d even considered. You’d lived on your own before, in truth you just slept with a baseball bat under your bed or a heavy flashlight by your nightstand. You’d never had to use them of course, but better have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. You were confident in your ability to defend yourself. As confident as an untrained baseball bat wielder could be anyway. It’s not as though you knew martial arts.
“That’s reassuring.” You told Della with a smile who returned your kind expression. “If you ever need anything, do let me know,” she said softly, picking up the tray as you and Sasha placed your glasses on it—though she handed you the plate of cookies which was for your to consume at your leisure.  “Us girls gotta stick together.” She winked, pulling a giggle from you before she gestured with her chin to your other neighbor’s home. “We’re outnumbered by boys after all.” She was just teasing but it clarified your suspicion of your other neighbors being a male couple.
“They’re very kind,” she added, “So I’m sure they’ll tell you the same. It’s a very lovely neighborhood.” She gave a little curtesy since she couldn’t wave. “I’ll let you girls get back to it!” She called as she walked back up to her driveway.
You smiled back, waving as she made her way to her home, “Thank you again! It was nice to meet you!” You raised the plate of cookies to Sasha’s view once the woman had retreated into her house after the brief welcome. “These are gonna be gone.” You whispered, walking past her to get them to the empty kitchen before you and Sasha could turn them to crumbs.
“Don’t you owe me a debt?” Sasha called after you, picking up the box the tray had once sat on top of.
You gave her a look over your shoulder. “I’m not giving you all my welcome cookies. I’m ordering pizza later.” For a moment you contemplated hiding the sweets. But that wouldn’t protect them from you. Just Sasha and her ravenous hunger.
It took a little under an hour to get the remainder of the van emptied, without any interruptions—no matter how pleasant. Assembling the bed was a bit of a pain, as suspected, but it was the only piece of furniture you were going to rope Sasha into helping you with. You’d bought a few new pieces of furniture that were still in boxes, which made them easier to pack, but you still had to assemble them. You were confident in your ability to do so on your own. You’d put together enough furniture in your time; and Sasha had done more than enough to earn her pizza.
Thus, the remainder of the evening consisted of eating said pizza, demolishing the plate of cookies, and yelling at reality stars through the television about their actions even though they couldn’t hear you nor Sasha. Thank god you had gotten the cable hooked up day one. You at least needed internet to watch Hulu and Netflix.
Your spunky brunette friend didn’t stay too late. Bless her, she took it upon herself to take the van back to the rental facility for you so you could continue to get settled. The most important piece of furniture was already complete, ready for you to pass out on it when you gave up on the boxes.
To your credit, you managed to unpack most things that didn’t involve the furniture still needing to be assembled. In fact, you unpacked and sorted all your kitchen ware very easily. The kitchen was a good place to start because it didn’t require the rearrangement of furniture which would inevitably come with unpacking areas like your bedroom. Empty cabinets, drawers, and countertops were a blank slate that only required methodical stuffing. Most people’s kitchens were relatively similar in where cutlery went, mixing bowls, cups, pots, and pans—there was only so much variability. It wouldn’t require the careful placement needed to make a space cozy and inviting. It just had to be functional and neat.
Another aspect that made the kitchen simple was your lack of items. Again, this home was much larger than your previous residence. It had much more space for things. Things you didn’t have but would come with time. You were rather excited to shop around for new things to fill your kitchen as well as the rest of your house.
You’d also managed to unpack some knick-knacks and items that would be set on already constructed furniture, like photographs of your family and friends. One of your favorite pictures included you, Sasha, and Connie in Disneyland. Because you were never too old to enjoy Disneyland. It had been your first trip with friends instead of family when you’d reached adulthood. You smiled fondly back at the joyous photo, all of you wearing Micky Mouse ears and grinning at the camera.
Connie and Sasha were two of your closest friends and though they were together romantically they never made you feel like a third wheel. You enjoyed their company dearly. The picture would get a place of honor in the living room before you went to bed that night, concluding your first day of unpacking.
-
The next two days went by in a blur of screws, hammers, nails, bubble wrap, newspaper, and boxes as you unpacked neatly tucked items and assembled furniture that was somehow always missing a screw or two that probably wasn’t important to the overall design anyway. Hopefully, the instructions were more like guidelines. So long as the furniture was sturdy and looked the way it did in the picture, it was fine. A lot of it was place holder furniture anyway. Rather cheap IKEA stuff that would serve to fill space and allow storage as you’d slowly accumulate nicer goods overtime.
It was a process, you reminded yourself, and the home wouldn’t be perfect or look like a catalog home right off the bat. It was what your mother had told you as well when you told her you were buying your first home. Her encouragement and soothing words also helped to keep you grounded much like the techniques you were still learning and utilizing from your time in therapy.
You’d hardly been out of the house since Friday when you first moved in and in spite of your fatigue caused by tedious unpacking, you were itching to start work on the front yard.
Not the backyard.
That was an adventure you weren’t ready for. You didn’t have an idea mapped out for that yet and weren’t going to spin out trying to construct a plan for it. The backyard would be last. Mainly because that was going to be a big project. It wasn’t poorly maintained, but it was empty. It had a nice lawn, much like the front yard, but that was it.
A blank slate almost overwhelmed you more. It allowed too many options. When you were ready, you’d likely ask the opinion of your parents or friends. Picking their brain for ideas would be helpful and take some of the burden of decisions from your shoulders.
But that was another day, likely many weeks from where you stood now.
Where you stood now was The Home Depot, in the gardening section, looking over the flowers, shrubs, pots, and yard décor they had to offer.
As you promised yourself earlier, you picked up some purple pansies, leaving every other flower and shrubbery up to the whimsy of your mood. Once you had enough plant life to fill the sparce areas of your new home you picked out a few more gardening essentials that you were severely lacking in. Such as gardening gloves, a trowel, and a small bag of soil to fill the few cute pots you would put on the front porch containing succulents. Because succulents were hard to kill—and admittedly you were still a bit green regarding the whole gardening thing.
Pun very much intended.
You snorted at your own stupid joke.
People looked at you in the checkout line.
You looked away, chagrinned.
Quickly, you paid for your greenery items and scurried out to your car. You would start planting right when you got home. It was still early in the morning, hardly 9:00 am. Way earlier than you liked to get up if you were being honest. But, if you started now you could get most of it done before it got too hot.
-
This was Mike’s favorite way to start the morning. With his heart pounding in his ears to the tune of his running mix, his nose filled with the fresh scent of the creek’s running water, and his bare shoulders gently warmed by the sunlight dancing through the canopy of trees overhead.
Almost every day before work, Mike would jog down to the creek trail not far from the house, enjoy the scenery, make a loop or two around the two mile-long path, and then jog home. It was a routine that never changed. He’d been doing it for years now and the consistency was part of what grounded him. He would credit his morning run with assisting in coping with his PTSD. Going without triggered his anxiety and instantly set a poor tone for his day. As such, his boyfriends were good about allowing him to untangle from the sheets every morning, despite one not being a morning person—because he hardly slept in the first place— and the other being a bit of a cuddlier, though he would insist Mike was the cuddlier. Not himself.
A smile tugged at Mike’s lips at the memory. He wiped his sweating brow with his shirt which was draped around his neck rather than on his body. He’d discarded it early in his run in favor of feeling the light breeze tickle over his bare torso.
His breathing changed as dirt road turned back into concrete when he turned from the creek trail back onto the sidewalk of the main streets of his neighborhood, making his way towards home.
As home came into view, his jog slowed to a walk, allowing his muscles to feel the rush of blood flow under his skin, the tingling throb of adrenaline cycling through his system becoming more noticeable with the shift of pace. Mike’s arms stretched over his head before bending at the joints. His hands folded behind his skull just under the knot of his blonde hair—the half up hairstyle keeping his shaggy bangs out of his face.
Getting closer to his home, he noticed a difference in the normally consistent pattern of houses along the street. A person was in the yard of the house beside his. Their old neighbor had never spent time tending to the yard. He hummed a curious sound. He hadn’t yet had the opportunity to introduce himself to their new neighbor. The “for sale” sign had been taken down days ago, and he vaguely remembered the presence of a moving van without occupants when he’d left for work that Friday.
Mike pulled his phone from his pocket, pausing his music before taking out one of his earphones as he got closer to the house. Though his own music was silenced, a new tune hit his ears, getting louder the closer he got to the kneeling form. The music wasn’t so loud that he would have to yell over it—he could probably clear his throat and the stranger would hear him.
With every intention to politely do just that, he opened his lips and—
Stopped dead in his tracks the moment he got behind the stranger because of what he was greeted by.
There you were, in front of him, on your hands and knees, back arched and your body at an incline as you dug the hole in front of you. But that’s not what got his attention. It was that your legging covered ass was perfectly on display, high in the air, round and inviting.
Mike stood there; mouth partially agape without realizing it. It was a few moments of ogling before he could take in more than that. He picked up your gentle voice, humming to the tune of what was playing on your portable speaker, he picked up the scent of flowers and damp earth, and he picked up on your doe like eyes wide with surprise. It was only then he noticed you had turned around away from your project, hand on your heart as you let out a yelp of surprise at finding someone standing behind you.
A giant standing behind you.
“H-hello…” you murmured, collecting yourself as you moved to turn down your music to a gentle background noise.
Mike was able to take that time to gather himself. He quickly closed his mouth, clearing his throat and rubbing the back of his neck. The man made a conscious effort not to stare, though now that he could see your face it was becoming even more difficult. A cute face to go with a nice ass. A blush dusted his cheeks. Hopefully covered by the sun kissed pigment of his skin.
God willing.
“Uh sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” He lifted his hand not currently on the back of his neck, pointing to the house to his left, the one with the magnolia tree. “M’name’s Mike Zacharias, I live next door.” He put on a smile though it was no less sheepish than his previous expression. “I hadn’t had the chance to introduce myself yet.” He was thankful to have a cover up to his staring.
You paused for a long moment, the gears in your head almost audible—then recognition flashed over your face. Part of you was trying to recall the conversation you’d had with Della on move in day, the other part was mesmerized by the husky voice.
The sudden brightness that filled in your eyes when you smiled had Mike’s heart in his throat.
“Oh! Yes,” Pulling yourself up to standing, you rubbed your palms together to brush off the dirt and then pulled off one of your gardening gloves, extending a clean hand to him. “I’m [y/n] [l/n]. It’s nice to meet you.” You were extremely eager to make a good impression on your neighbors. You thought you had done a pretty good job with Della—though her cookie offering had done most of the work for you. It was imperative you get along with Mike and his partner. After all, you’d gotten very lucky with most of your neighbors throughout your life. Most of that was due to your parents. Your mother was friendly, polite, and warm. Your father was boisterous, funny, and generous. You strived to offer the same mix to your neighbors and have a good relationship.
You had seen enough episodes of “Fear Thy Neighbor” to understand that a poor relationship on either side of you could wreck an otherwise comfortable home life.
Of course, “Fear Thy Neighbor” was the most dramatic of examples often leading to violence and murder.
You should probably stop watching the ID channel.
Stick to the stupid reality shows.
Mike swallowed thickly, the dusted pink in his cheeks brightening. His large palm engulfed yours and it was as if his blush traveled from his face, down his arm, through your hands and up to your own cheeks. His hand was huge, it practically swallowed yours. Your palm was completely swaddled by the deceptively gentle squeeze of a rough hand, slight calluses made firm by some sort of labor you couldn’t name.
With your surprise having warn off from the initial contact you found yourself fully registering the man in front of you—
And holy shit if your brain didn’t almost immediately short circuit again.
First of all, he was a giant. Already established—but something you didn’t truly comprehend until you’d stood and fully approached him from your botany project. If you dug the hole you were working on a little deeper, you were pretty sure you could plant Mike up to his knees and he’d continue growing into the tree he so clearly was.
Second of all there was his face which was generously exposed by his tied back dark blond hair. Hazelly-green eyes, pronounced nose—that fit him perfectly, and a strong jaw lightly bearded along it as well as his upper lip.
Your eyes followed the curve of his jaw down his neck, past his broad shoulders and onto a sparsely haired chest just where his defined pectorals met. If you followed the path from his chest down to his toned stomach, which you absolutely did, you found the same light etching of hair extending from his navel down to his—
Your eyes quickly darted back up to his face, your own heating up substantially as your hands all too soon disconnected.
Mike placed his hands on his hips which served to flex his strong arms and momentarily distract you again.
If you could have slapped yourself subtly, you would have done so. But with those hazel eyes boring into you, you settled for mentally berating your thirst. ‘Get it together woman. He’s taken… and gay.’ But gay came second to taken. It was important to respect a preexisting relationship. It was important to respect sexuality too.
But—
You could look, right? No harm in looking. That’s why people went to museums. To drool over the Statue of David.
That throaty voice pulled you back to focus. “So, is it just you?” If you weren’t completely sure that the man in front of you was gay, the question would have sounded hopeful.
He must have just been asking so he could introduce himself to any other potential newcomers.
“Yep just me. It’s my first house.” He didn’t ask for that second part, but you were proud. You were proud of having your own home and doing so alone. You didn’t have to depend on anyone to get to this important step in your life. That wasn’t something many people could say. You weren’t trying to brag—it was just that residual excitement of having achieved one of your life goals.
Mike to his credit seemed excited for you. His eyebrows raised, as if impressed. Buying a home was getting harder and harder for every generation. Though he didn’t seem too much older than you. Probably in his early 30’s. Even if he were ten years older than you that would be a generational gap and that meant the struggles to find a home were different between the two of you. However, you didn’t think he could be that much older than you considering you were in the later part of your 20’s. 30’s seeming to creep ever closer. But seeing Mike reminded you that your 30’s didn’t make you old in the slightest. The more you looked at Mike, the better your 30’s looked. Because fuck if Mike wasn’t fine as hell.
You were thinking too far ahead again, this time years.
To pull yourself from your spinning thoughts, you looked back at Mike’s face. The smile momentarily dazed you. Because of course he would also have perfect teeth. “Congratulations, that’s wonderful.” He murmured, looking to your house for a moment and then back at you. The house was rather large for one person. “No significant other chomping at the bit to invade your space yet?” The tone was teasing, and you managed a laugh which dispelled your previously spiraling thoughts. God, sometimes you didn’t even notice when they were spiraling.
Mike seemed interested in your relationship status. It put little butterflies in your stomach which were squashed when you looked down at yourself. Even if Mike were interested in females, why would he be interested in you?
You growled internally at those disparaging thoughts to shut the fuck up. You counted to three in your head, a brief distraction from those thoughts used to ground you in the present.
Normally, you preferred your longer methods of distraction, like your colors. However, those weren’t feasible when in the middle of a conversation with your hot neighbor.
“Nope, no boyfriend or anything. Just me and maybe a dog or a cat at some point.” You grinned at the idea, reminding yourself that now that you had your own home no one could tell you if you could have a pet or not. No landlord, no parent, no roommate—no permission needed.
The twinkle in Mike’s eye was easily missed. “My votes’ for a cat,” he murmured offhandedly.
“Not a dog fan?” You asked playfully. Though maybe he was worried about you having a yappy dog that he would have to listen to all day. Understandable.
“No, I like dogs too,” Did his voice get a little deeper? “Just always been fond of kittens.” His eyes slid over you, a smile tugging at his lips that made your blush from earlier give an encore performance.
‘Taken. And. Gay.’ You reminded yourself, willing the blush to dissipate and scolding yourself for reading too much into his gaze. Schooling your expression with the same friendly smile you’d given Della; you nodded your head. “Well I’ll just have to drag you along when I adopt one, then you can play with some pussy.”
Oh lord.
That was a Freudian slip if there ever was one.
You felt your face go hot and resisted the overwhelming compulsion to connect your palm to your forehead. Inappropriate joke for a first meeting—for sure.
Mike’s eyes flashed with something you couldn’t name, his tongue darting out to wet his lips. “I’ll take you up on that,” he grinned, and the expression was playful, putting you a bit more at ease. “It’s been far too long since I’ve played with a cute pussy.”
Your thighs squeezed together. Unnoticeably, you prayed.
Mike must have been messing with your somewhat unintentional word choice. Though you were happy that Mike seemed to be the lighthearted type. You could see yourself forming a friendship with the man. Hopefully, his boyfriend (husband?) was half as laid back.
You also hopped his partner was half as sexy.
Because if he was just as sexy as Mike, you were going to suffer a heat stroke.
The giant grinned, tilting his head to gesture to his home. “I gotta get ready for work.” Was it your imagination or did he look a bit reluctant? His grin was back in place too soon to really tell. You nodded your head politely with a little wave just before he turned away.
“It was nice to meet you.” You called, getting back on your knees next to the little pit you’d dug for your shrub.
The blond looked over his strong shoulder as he made his way down the sidewalk and threw you a very obvious wink. “Catch ya later, kitten.” He replied before he rounded his driveway and walked up to his front door, giving you one more glance and disappearing inside the much larger home.
Blinking, you sat frozen for a few moments before your eyes drifted to the hole beside you. Maybe if you dug it a bit deeper you could bury yourself in it.
Because Mike was surely going to be the death of you.
-
When Mike got back into the house, he had to lean against the door, tilting his head back to let the cooling air of the AC drench his heated skin. Though at this point the heat was less from his run and more from the cute new neighbor. It took everything in his power not to pin you to the dirt right there. He let out a little groan, hardly audible.
But just audible enough.
A voice, smooth as honey called from around the corner. “Mike? You alright?”
Mike hummed an affirmative and pushed himself off the door to make his way to the kitchen where the voice was coming from. If he didn’t answer right away, he knew the male would come searching for him and instantly begin to drill him on his mental state. There was no need for that.
His mental state was good. Very good this morning.
His large palm came up to slide over the marble of the kitchen island as he bypassed it to get to the fridge, sticking his head in for longer than necessary to retrieve a water bottle. A soft crack filled the room as he twisted the cap, breaking the seal as he turned to face the kitchen table. Two sets of eyes peered over at him. One set a bright blue; the color of the ocean, the other a stormy grey sky.
The honey voice spoke again, the blue eyes having been peering behind a newspaper completely revealed by its placement on the table. “Good run I take it?”
“Looks a little too happy about a run, Erwin.” The stormy eyed male murmured from behind a teacup held at the rim.
Mike smirked a little. Levi always was perceptive. They both were. But Levi noticed subtleties far more quickly than Erwin did. “I met our new neighbor.” He brought the opening of the bottle to his lips, letting the chilled liquid sooth his throat of the dryness from his run.
“Oh?” Erwin asked, leaning back in his seat and tilting his head back as a silent hint for Mike to lean down to him. Levi was good at noticing subtleties, but Mike was good at reading hints. He leaned down and pressed his lips to Erwin’s, his own cool and water glazed compared to Erwin’s soft and warm ones. “Mm hm,” He confirmed while righting himself. “And Levi,” Mike moved to the other side of the table, tilting Levi’s head back with a fingertip to direct his gaze to him which had been glued upon the novel in his left hand. The ravenette looked up from his book with the giant’s prompting, gaze aloof and seemingly disinterested. However, the look in Mike’s eyes gave him pause.
Since Mike knew Levi, really knew him, he noticed the curiosity lingering behind that seemingly blank expression.
Mike pecked his lips to the shorter male’s, whispering against them. “She’d be perfect.”

Summary: Bucky is back from a mission he was sent on without you. He works hard to get you back on your routine.
Notes: This fic is dark, and it only gets darker. This is more Winter Soldier Bucky in terms of behavioral traits and dynamics with other characters. This is not a soft lovey dovey style fic, and if that bothers you DO NOT READ.

Part One:
The night is young, the summer air is humid, you've swapped out your jeans for a pair of fray end shorts, tennis shoes scuffing against the pavement as you shuffle your feet, waiting.
You've been craving a bit of freedom, some wind in your hair, something intoxicating in your system, and that led you right to Tony Stark. You batted your eyelashes the best you could, pretty please, can we borrow your car for the night? Honestly, you don't have a plan. All you know is that you feel suffocated sitting around on base. You feel old, tired, missing and craving the feeling of adrenaline in your veins.
So as soon as the jet returns to HQ, you're grabbing Bucky by the collar of his shirt and dragging him out to the sight of a bright orange Audi that makes him groan in disbelief. A knowing look graces his features, and he almost feels bad for the guy. Because if there's anything you're good at, it's getting your way, and Bucky had basically signed himself up for it. But Stark? He had no idea what you were truly capable of.
"I'm not going to ask how you managed to get it," He says, hand catching your waist and pulling you to stop before you can get inside, "But I am going to ask, where are we going?"
He's still in his tactical gear, a gun on his hip, dirt and blood smeared across his skin, he smells like gun powder and sweat, and you can't resist the urge to just kiss him. So you do, hands in his hair, pulling him down into a searing kiss that pulls a strangled sound from the back of his throat. He hasn't seen you in days, and he's more exhausted than he's used to being. But he can tell you're restless, the chaos in your bones convincing you to basically seduce Stark and take his car to do who knows what in the cover of night. He's just glad that you decided to bring him along.
"For a ride." Is all you offer, letting him hike your leg up around his waist. "I missed you."
"I know." His voice sounds wrecked, laced with exhaustion and arousal, and you almost feel bad for keeping him up even longer, because who knows what he just came back from. But you're too excited to turn back now, dangling the keys in front of his face, his grin just as wicked as yours as he kisses you one last time.
"I want to go first, you can drive on the way back."
When you get in the drivers seat and press the button to start the engine, you get why people collect cars like this. The feeling of power, the sense of danger, it's intoxicating, and you start to feel a little breathless when you rev the engine.
Bucky can see it click in your head, he can see the exact moment that you decide that this might be taking it too far.
There's a wicked glint in your eyes when you turn to look at him. "Oh," You laugh, "I've created a monster."
His eyebrows furrow, fingers wrapping around your wrist to pull you away from the wheel, half bent over the console. "I would prefer it if you didn't get us both killed, so you take it easy, understand?" Because he knows. He knows you could say fuck it all just for the thrill of it.
You click your tongue, "You're no fun." You pout, watching as his eye twitches, a weakness, "But that's okay. I'm sure you'll figure out how to make it up to me."
He smiles at that, and you aren't sure if it's pride or love that has him grabbing your chin and forcing you to look in his eyes. You're a smart mouthed fool, and he knows that you probably got most of your attitude from him. "What am I going to do with you?"
"You can start with fucking me on every surface of this car before we give it back tomorrow morning."
He hums, kissing you once, twice, unable to pull away because he likes the look in your eyes, he likes that you're this comfortable with him, young and wild and trusting him not to judge you. It's harmless fun, he understands, the tedious schedule you follow everyday is eating away at your youth. So he indulges you, letting you put the windows down and drive just a little more recklessly than he should.
The shriek of laughter that comes from your throat is worth the risk, his hand gripping your thigh, watching as you change your grip on the steering wheel. The wind blows your hair, flushes your cheeks, and its a reflex more than anything else when he fishes his phone out to take a picture of you.
This is what you both live for. Moments like this where nothing else matters. You have each other, you've found a perfect medium between work and play, and it works out better than you could have ever imagined.
Keeping up with you is like pulling teeth sometimes, because Bucky just doesn't care as much as you do. He figured that you would be better suited with someone who is equally as high maintenance as you, someone like Tony Stark. The expensive taste and busy schedule could only be understood by someone who lives that lifestyle.
But behind the perfume and lip gloss, beneath the eyelash extensions and layers of designer clothing, chaos awaits. It makes you reckless.
You're hot headed, quick to pull a trigger and abuse your power before the chance can be taken from you. Steve had tried to train you first, but all attempts made to domesticate you failed, the restlessness within you wired deep within your bones, and so you were passed on to Bucky. Because there's a part of Bucky that craves chaos just like you do, the only difference is that he's learned to control it rather than have it control him. You were pushed right into his arms, and it was only a matter of time before he left and impression on you.
The devilment you shared made him putty in your hands. He saw himself in you, a pretty head plagued with torturous thoughts, a pretty girl ruined by this job, and so he trained you accordingly. He told you that there was a trick to it, that he never learned to tame the darkness within him, he just learned to suppress and channel it at the right time, finding constructive outlets rather than being a fucking brat all the time. He could actually handle you, and love hit you hard. You've been inseparable ever since.
Steve was concerned with how quickly your relationship developed, Tony called you both crazy, and Natasha, she may or may not be a bad influence on you. You're a killer, he's a killer, it's like you were made for each other.
But that part of you never went away, and it's times like these that it starts to become a test of his patience.
Eventually, you find yourself at a park, and Bucky is beyond confused when you park the car and actually turn it off. You meant it when you said you just wanted to go for a drive. It's too late to find anything open, he's too tired to go too far, and you would rather sit and star gaze with him rather than do anything to piss him off.
But first, he fucks you. Hard. On every surface, just like you asked. He pulls you over the console, flips your shirt up and presses your tits against the dash, fucking up into you with a strength that you realize you've missed these past three days. Then he gets out, an arm secured around your waist to hold you up as he rounds the car and places you on the hood, palms flat against the polished paint as he continues to fuck you.
It's obscene, your body caving under his weight, cheek pressed flat against the cool metal when he grips the back of your neck, arching you against him further. God, he missed you. You take him so well, always such a good girl for him, and he tells you that, lips pressed against your ear as he grinds his cock into you, and the only response you can give is a moan.
Then he's in the front seat, hands tight on your hips as you ride him, and you could have sworn the car seemed bigger until you found yourself in this position, back arched against the wheel so that you don't hit your head.
He forces you to look him in the eyes, grabbing your throat and tilting your head up, leaving you to find your own rhythm. The muscles in his arm strain at the restraint, because you slow down to a teasing pace, the look in his eyes becoming dangerous as you test his patience, and it doesn't take long for him to grab you up and turn you around, pushing the seat back as far as it goes and pounding you against the soft leather. He's relentless, hips slapping against your ass at a speed that your brain can't keep up with, and you're coming before your body has a chance to warn you.
He comes inside of you soon after, locking your body to his as if you'll disappear, and it makes you wonder what happened while he was gone.
You pull a bottle of liquor from the glove box, he pulls your shorts back up, and together you deposit your tired bodies on the swing set a few feet away. He tells you everything, sharing swigs of whiskey, eyes dancing between you and the night sky above you.
It was supposed to be recon, supposed to be a simple in and out. But Steve fucked up, stepped on a trip wire and gave them away. They had to fight their way out, didn't even get any intel besides the fact that whoever the fuck it was knew that they were coming. Or at least, they were expecting someone to come eventually.
It makes you wish you were there, because Steve wouldn't have been able to fuck up, it's you who goes out on those types of missions with Bucky. You two just work better together, something that maybe now Steve Rogers might finally come to understand. But you were told, more like ordered to sit this one out, and neither of you say it, but you both register at the same time that it was a mistake.
You drink more than you should, the bottle half empty by the time he decides to cut you off. But you don't let it ruin your fun, kicking your legs as hard as you can, the swing lifting higher than the bars that hold it, and for a moment it feels like you're flying before gravity takes over and yanks you back down. But Bucky doesn't let you jostle yourself around too much, arm reaching out to grab the chain of your swing, slowing your speed.
"We shouldn't stay out long." He says. "We need to get up early." You raise an eyebrow in question, he does the same. "Don't act brand new. You do this every time I leave. You fall off your routine and we have to work twice as hard for a couple days to get you back on it."
It makes you groan, makes him grab you by the arm and pull you to sit on his lap, kissing your cheek when you lean your head back against his shoulder.
You don't say anything, because there isn't anything else to say. He's back, he's here with you again and you couldn't ask for anything more than that.
But he seems to have too much on his mind, taking swig after swig until the bottle is empty and there's nothing left to distract him. "Don't do this again." He says. "I'll buy you a car if that's what you want, but don't you ever run to another man before coming to me." You aren't sure if this is an insecurity, or if he's simply being possessive, but either way you take too long to respond, his hands clamping down on your thighs in a grip that has you arching up off his lap to relieve the pressure. "Do you understand me?"
"Yes, fuck."
"Good." He kisses the corner of your mouth this time, smoothing his palms against your skin to soothe the ache he's caused. "Where did you get these shorts from?"
"College."
Your response raises a question in his head, how can you still fit them? But he realizes immediately that college was only a year ago for you, a harsh reminder of your age compared to his, and he simply hums in reply.
The air grows too cold for you to handle, shivering in his arms despite the warmth running through your veins, and he makes the call to wrap it up. But not before he kisses you first, turning you around on his lap and tugging you against his lips by a harsh grip in your hair. You don't get to have many moments like these, so you cherish it, kissing him as long as he needs you to, enjoying the chill that snakes up your spine when his hands round your ass and deposit under your thighs, hoisting you up.
He settles you in the passenger seat, eager for his turn at driving the car, and you could care less given your sudden exhaustion. You admire the way he looks, jaw clenched, muscles taught, arm flexing as he palms the steering wheel, a hand on your head rest as he glances back to reverse the car. His hair is loose for a change, framing his face and whipping back and forth each time he turns his head.
He could use a trim, but you know he'll never let you.
He doesn't lose his mind driving like you did, remaining at a reasonable speed, turning on the radio to keep his mind busy since you aren't doing much entertaining. He doesn't blame you, he's tired too, and you had been waiting up to greet him when he got back.
You start to doze off, the blur of lights and buildings putting your mind at ease. It's not until Bucky's hands are on you again that you realize you fell asleep, which is a bummer, because you won't have this car again come noon.
"I want you to get me pregnant in this car."
He snorts, ignoring your antics entirely, reaching over to unfasten your seatbelt.
He tries to carry you, but you don't let him, settling for holding his hand instead. The compound is quiet except for the sound of the tv on low in the common room, Clint passed out on the couch, the movie he had been watching probably long gone off by now.
It makes you smile, stopping to place a blanket on him. He doesn't move a muscle, and Bucky grows impatient waiting for you, so you carry on. In the privacy in your room, you step your way out of your shoes and kick them into the corner by the door, then you help him out of his gear.
You find a stab wound on his stomach, it's long stopped bleeding by now, not at all infected, and it's already starting to heal. He says nothing, your warm fingers brushing his skin and something domestic washes over you both. It's something soft and unspoken, something the lines of I'm glad your safe.
The tile on the floor is cold beneath your feet, you lead him into the bathroom and run a bath for him, despite his protests of you being too tired. You watch as the water turns milky with dirt and blood, fingertips against his scalp as you clean his hair. It's a side of you that he doesn't see too often, a softer side that you bury under attitude and attention seeking mischief, and at this point he doesn't know which version of you he appreciates more.
You lather a sponge with body wash, a cedar scent you learned to love on him, and you wash him gently, carefully, mindful of his bruising. His wet hands are on your face, pulling you in for an occasional kiss, and it seems that he just can't keep his hands off of you.
He fucks you again, but it's different this time, softer, slower, his eyes locked on yours, fingers gentle just like you were for him, and you feel it in your heart when he tells you he loves you. He fucks you to sleep and tucks you into bed, limbs tangled with yours to keep you close.
He'll never bring it up, but he wasn't sure if he would make it back to you this time. He sleeps better than he had in days knowing that you're close.
It makes getting you up in the next morning is hard. You're a heavy sleeper, something Bucky was always thankful for on nights where he struggled to settle beside you. But when it's time to wake you up, he curses your ability to still sleep soundly like a baby after all the things you've seen, he envies it. He wants to let you sleep in, he wants to stay in bed with you, holding you, because who knows if he'll ever be able to do it again.
But he has to keep things normal. He has to keep you on your routine, otherwise you'll give in to your madness.
You think you're dreaming it, his hands on your side, his lips on the side of your face. You just can't bring yourself to open your eyes, exhaustion keeping it's hold on you. But Bucky is determined, a bit rough as he tugs you to lay on your back, your eyes flying open at being jostled, and he doesn't look apologetic as he smiles down at you.
"Hey, peach." He kisses you quickly, leaving nothing to soothe you back to sleep. "Time to get up."
His voice is hoarse, you realize, he's tired, too tired for your liking, and you wonder how long he's been up.
"A few more minutes?" You pout, curling your body around his, and you can tell he's on the verge of saying yes. "Please?"
But his will is far too strong. "You need to get up." He says, "Now."
And just like that, you're pissed, a sour attitude shifting your expression entirely, and he could care less, standing up to give you room to move. You have a dull headache, a hangover no doubt, but you ignore it as you dig through your dresser for workout clothes to change into.
He shakes his head at you, sensing your attitude, but he doesn't say a word as you stomp your way over to the door, pulling it open hard enough to bang against the wall. It's okay, he knows what you need, and he's been itching to give it to you.
When it comes to training, Bucky tends to be harsher on you, because he knows you can take it. It's the textbook definition of tough love, pushing you beyond your limits to make you better. It's the kind of training that leaves you sore and exhausted and covered in bruises, busted lips, black eyes, you aren't new to any of it. In fact, you're used to the feeling, and that's something most people would find scary. But you need it to stay sane, a distraction from everything else. You like when he pushes you beyond your limits.
You warm up with a jog around the compound grounds, the sun hasn't come up yet, the air crisp and cool and burning your lungs with each inhale you take. He reminds you to breathe slowly, in your nose and out your mouth in pace with each foot fall. He quickly realizes that your endurance has fallen low, his hand on your back to push you to run faster.
He doesn't take it easy on you, not even when you collapse into the ground, your body forcing you to take a break from running.
"Get up."
Your lungs burn, your face is hot, your legs are jelly, you shake your head.
"Look at you, you can't even speak and you have to nerve to slack off." He glares down at you, hands on his hips. "Get the fuck up before I drag you across the concrete."
His threat is very real, so you struggle to rise back to your feet. He continues on, super soldier stamina has him not even breaking a sweat, and you curse the cheating serum coursing through his veins.
"You're cheating, you have an advantage." You pant, fingers barely catching his arm to try and keep up. "I can't go as fast as you for that long."
He slows just a little, your hand wrapping around his bicep. "Which is why I push you. Your muscles won't ever grow past the strain if you don't experience it." He says. "Shape up, we're almost done."
He allows you a five minute break, which you spend chugging as much water as he'll let you have, laying on the floor of the gym to try and catch your break and give your muscles a break.
He starts you on the treadmill, pushing up the incline every ten minutes, and you can feel the strain it's putting you under. You haven't done this in days, and the alcohol that remains in your system doesn't help. You're just thankful that no one else is in the gym to witness your struggle.
Next is ab workouts, he joins you for this one, side by side on the mat as he walks you through each exercise. He flies through them with ease, hardly breaking a sweat. But you on the other hand feel winded, muscles aching as you use them beyond what you have been. He watches, carefully, a knowing look on his face when you start to lose your speed, but he doesn't let you stop.
This is what you need. An outlet, something to exhaust your energy and take the edge off. For the most part it helps. But there's only so much he can do to keep you occupied, so when he has you here in the gym, he makes it count.
He has you on weights, which turns your body numb, and you aren't sure what kind of damage it's doing, but you know that you'll be sore for the next couple of days.
He lets you take a break after an hour, you drink as much water as you can, eager to be away from his scrutinizing gaze, and you find Natasha returning from a morning run with Steve. They look like they haven't done anything a all, but the smell of outside and sweat tells you otherwise.
Natasha has the nerve to smile at you, recognizing the winded look on your face, and she settles next to you in the kitchen, hand on her hip as she drinks from a water bottle.
"I tried to warn you," She says, "He's kicking your ass, isn't he?"
She did try, you'll give her the credit, knocking on your door every day he was gone to at least get you to come out for a jog. But you refused, anticipating this intensity, and while you'll never admit that to her, she assumes you enjoy the torture.
"It's embarrassing." You say. "Even after all this time, he can wipe the floor with me if he wanted to."
She laughs at that, a twinkle in her eye that hints at the history she shares with him. "Yeah. You and me both." Her smile is far from innocent. "But I'm sure you give him a run for his money."
Your grin is wicked, "You can bet your perky little ass I do."
Your relationship with Natasha is complicated. Sometimes she's the older sister you always wished you had. Other times she's the extravagant aunt who teaches you the life lessons your mother was too modest to. Then sometimes, it's hard to tell, she's just an attractive woman admiring another attractive woman, someone with experience gravitating to someone who doesn't, because it's in her nature to enjoy the power play. If you had to guess, Natasha would bend you over the counter if she had the opportunity, just like anyone else living here in the compound. But she respects your privacy, respects the strange relationship you have with a man who is just as deadly as she is, and settles for the mischief you create together instead.
It's fun to feed into it, you always had a knack for sticking your fingers into flames, and sometimes you hold it over Bucky's head. Like last night, you didn't tell him what you did to convince Tony to let you borrow his car, but it's implied in your nature. You tend to be a bit hyper sexual, another trait that sometimes proves to be a pain in the ass. But Bucky has something to handle that too, and sometimes, at times like this, he lets you off your tight leash.
"Who's ass is perky?" He had been watching, of course he had, and the look on Natasha's face tells you that she knew it too.
"Depends on who you ask." You quip, flashing him an innocent smile. "Yours is, mine is, and hers," You spare a glance at Natasha, "Well, you would know, wouldn't you?"
He rolls his eyes, because you already know the answer to what you're implying. Nothing ever happened between him an Natasha. If anything were to happen, it would have been long ago, before they had both reformed themselves into the people they are now. He told you that, confessed his entire life to you, so he knows this is just your way of trying to get him worked up.
"Don't drag me into this." Natasha waves a finger between you both. "Whatever this is, I want no part." Her eyes settle on you. "I also suggest you cool it, because I'm joining you, and I don't want to be forced around awkward sexual tension."
You look at Bucky, raising an eyebrow. He only shrugs. "Steve too." He says. "I figured you needed a change in pace, you're too used to me now, you could use a different perspective."
Your break is obviously over, Natasha follows you as you walk out of the kitchen. "Yeah," She says. "Perspective."
The mood changes drastically, all playfulness gone from her when you step on the sparing mat together. To put it simply, she kicks your ass. You put up a good fight though, you actually managed to make her bleed, but in the end, she's too on top of her training schedule for you to find a weakness. That's the point Bucky was trying to make to you. You know him and his tactics, you know how hard he hits, you know where he'll strike, all you have to do is avoid it and expect it. But with an opponent you've never faced before, you're far too weak at the moment to properly defend yourself.
The next time you hit the mat is your last, nose colliding with the floor, blood gushing, a grunt coming from you that actually manages to distract your boyfriend who stands feet away, sparing with Steve.
You pinch your nose like you've been taught, instantly feeling that it isn't broken, and Natasha has helped you up by the time Bucky makes his way over.
He's actually sweating, panting hard as he takes your chin in his hand, examining your face. "You'll be fine." He says, glancing at Natasha. He nods to her, and you aren't sure what it is, approval, dismissal? "Hit the showers." He says to you, "You're done for now."
For now, there will be more later after lunch you're sure. You leave with Natasha, who reminds you to keep your head tilted, her arm linked with yours as she walks with you to the infirmary. The nurse on duty clogs your nose with gauze, telling you what you already know. It's not broken, but it will be bruised, and after the bleeding stops you need to rinse your nose clear of the blood. Until then, breathe out your mouth, and be cautious of blood that may trickle to the back of your throat.
"Want to step out with me?" Natasha meets you back in the kitchen after you both shower, her hair dark and dripping, and for a moment you think she's kidding.
Your body is starting to bruise, knuckles scraped and angry, nose bloody. But she simply stares at you expectantly, waiting for your answer.
"Okay."
You take her Camero, she lets you drive, and it turns out it's just a grocery run. She wants to cook lunch, macaroni salad, and you both do a bit of personal shopping while you're out. After getting the ingredients, you both occupy the kitchen to make it. It doesn't take too long, but the serving size is large considering how many people will want to eat it.
Tony comes to find you in search of food, and he asks you about his car, a strange smell that he can't quite place. Liquor, sex, sweat? It could be anything, but you decide to play dumb instead, biting your tongue as you smile at him and suggest he go get it detailed.
While the macaroni chills in the fridge, Bucky comes to find you carrying fresh gauze and an alcohol wipe. He gives you his protein shake, chocolate flavored, and you sip from it eagerly. His hands are gentle as he pulls the blood soaked gauze from your nose and you take a deep breath, feeling the dried blood and soreness from the impact.
He applies pressure to the bridge of your nose, stopping when you wince, humming low in his throat as he leans down to kiss you. "It'll be a nasty bruise," He says, "But you deserve it, you fucking brat."
You imagine his opinion will change when the skin on your nose starts to discolor, but for now, he feels proud of himself. You let him have it.
He wipes your nose gently, hand on your throat to tilt your head back, he points the corners of the alcohol wipe and wipes the inside of your nose, eyebrows knit in concentration, and you take the opportunity to feel him up.
Your hands slide under his shirt, the skin is smooth where his stab wound was last night, and once again you're amazed by his abilities. "Did you have fun beating up someone other than me for once?"
His lip quirks up in a half smile, "Nah." He says. "It's not as satisfying."
You smile despite yourself, wrapping your arms around his waist. "What about you?" He asks. "Did you find anything interesting while your head was up Nat's ass?"
"Jealous?"
His grip on your throat shifts, "If I were, this would be a very different situation for you."
He knows you're his, there's nothing to argue, nothing to worry about, even if the entire compound wants to rearrange your guts. A pretty young thing like you, he doesn't blame them. But they wouldn't be able to handle you, you wouldn't enjoy it, and it would send you right back to him.
You both know it.
"You're so scary." You kiss him then, silencing whatever remark he had for you, eyes slipping closed as he tilts his head against yours, cautious of your nose. He tastes like chocolate, and sweat, slipping from your arms to take a shower.
When he returns, the salad has cooled enough to eat, and naturally, Clint already has a mouthful before anyone else can get their hands on it. He too has just returns from a workout, his sweats drenched, Bucky crinkles his nose, scowls at the amount of people occupying the kitchen and opts for lurking in the hall, watching as you portion out bowls for everyone, including him.
He's amazed at your cooking skills, the two of you tucked away out back with bowls of macaroni salad, enjoying the breeze in the shade. You beam at his praise, smiling over a mouthful of food, but it doesn't last long, his finger reaching out to poke your noise.
Don't look too proud of yourself, he says, this isn't approved in your diet plan.
Yeah well, screw him and the diet plan.
He makes you run after lunch, a water bottle in your hand because he isn't going to let you stop for breaks, the only water you can have is what you can hold.
It's cruel, the sun high in the sky and beating down on you with an intensity that makes it hard to breathe, let alone run. But you manage, a familiar exhaustion washing over you as you push your body for the third time today.
He makes you a protein shake, joins you for your second shower of the day, and then he drags you to bed.
"All your hard work means nothing if you don't give yourself a chance to recover." He whispers in your ear, lips pressed to your skin, his arm cold against your side when he spoons you. "I know you're tired, peach. You did good today, now rest."
It makes it all worth it, the torture of exercise, the agonizing exhaustion he puts you through. Getting to lay here like this, the comfort of his closeness, a vulnerability that only you have been allowed to see.
You turn, sealing your lips against his in a sloppy kiss, one that has no real effort behind it but has all the desperation in the world. It makes his grip tighten at your waist, his other hand slipping down to yank your panties to the side.
"Okay, you can sleep after this."

Working For Love: A TerrorMoo story 14/17
Heyo! Hope that you’re all having a great saturday! I’m gonna post more drabbles tonight after this, but I wanted to get this out so I didn’t forget!
Previous Part
Start from the beginning
Brian liked to think he was a good trainer.
“I can’t do that.” The pinched look the older man gave Brian was hard to ignore, accentuated by the way he tilted his nose at the equipment Brian was showing him.
“The bike is the easiest machine in the gym,” Brian explained, counting back from 100 in his head to keep from snapping at the customer. He liked working with the public, and normally his charm helped motivate others to improve themselves. But there was a reason he was working with this particular client; Tyler had given him to Brian because of how hard he was. He paid monthly for his one session, giving the gym revenue. Sometimes, the guy was ‘too busy’ to come to Brian’s session, giving Brian a free hour of extra pay. Though normally, Brian tried to keep a consistent weekly schedule with his focused clients, this one was a very rare exception.
“I have bad knees.” Which was only true because of his extra weight. The man reported being close to four hundred pounds, yet in the four months Brian had started to work with him, refused to change his diet. His weekly intake of fast food alone was more than Brian had in three months, not that he seemed to find a problem with that.
“Which is why we decided to work on the bike. You were worried the treadmill and elliptical would be too much strain.” This was how they had spent their last session, arguing about what his body was capable of. Three sessions in, and they had yet to actually touch a machine.
“This looks like it’ll be too much, too. I can’t risk not being able to walk with my career. I have people who actually rely on my mobility.” He was a lawyer at a medical firm and sat on his ass 95% of the day. Plus, connecting this man to the word ‘mobile’ was a joke. Brian had to force himself not to roll his eyes at the statement, knowing it was just another dig at Brian’s profession. This man was very aware of their salary difference, and made sure to slip it in once a session.
“Did you want to try one of the weight machines, instead?” He asked through clenched teeth, wondering how Tyler even got through the intake with this man without punching him in the face. If anyone had a worse temper than Brian, it was the gym owner.
“I’m feeling I need a break. Can you have someone set up one of the massage beds for me?” The twitch under Brian’s eye was impossible to stop, though he turned his body away from the customer to keep it from showing.
“Sure thing. Go talk to Evan, and he’ll set you up.” The man walked with entitlement to the front desk, never once thanking or looking back at Brian. He took three slow breaths after the man was out of his hair, cursing under his breath as soon as the air was out of his lungs. His palms were quick to press to his eyes, rubbing them slowly to alleviate his headache.
“Having fun?” Brian scowled when he glared over to his co-worker, catching Luke’s shit-eating grin. “He looks real focused getting his massage reps in, so good work trainer.”
“Fuck off,” Brian muttered, hating the feeling lingering in his chest. He didn’t like the guy, but that meant nothing when it came to wanting to see him progress in his health. That was why he decided to follow his fitness career path; too many people in his family had been affected by unhealthy lifestyles. He’d had an uncle who died from heart disease, and diabetes ran rampant in his family. Some were willing to change, but didn’t have the genetic disposition to do it on their own. Brian wanted to help those types of people get healthy, one session at a time. In his head, he knew this guy’s lack of motivation and negative attitude would forever hinder his life. Eventually, it would catch up to him, whether Brian wanted it to or not.
“That guy’s an ass.” A hand dropped on top of his head, ruffling his hair in a way that was normally reserved for older people. Luke had a good amount of years on him, but he wasn’t parent level. Still, he didn’t bat the hand away, somehow knowing that Luke wasn’t trying to be condescending when he did it. “For every idiot like him, you get a guy like Brock.”
“Wait, he’s here?” Surprised when Luke nodded, Brian was caught off guard by the information. How long had he been there? How hadn’t Brian seen him? Then again, having to work with his resistant client took up most of his energy, so it was possible that Brock walked right by without Brian even noticing.
“And you should see how much ass he’s kicking.” The sentence didn’t feel right when speaking about Brock, making Brian’s eyebrows push together in confusion. Luke laughed and dropped his hand onto Brian’s shoulder, pushing him toward the other side of the gym. “You’ve been teaching your boy well.”
“What are you-” but then Brian’s world stopped. There, in the middle of the room Luke used for kickboxing and self-defense, was Brock. His hands were gloved up and poised to either side of his face, ready for the next combination command. Anthony looked nervous when Brock hit a strong jab against his padded hand, and he actually took a step back when Brock’s knee finished the combination. Stunned didn’t cover Brian’s feelings, his jaw dropping down without his permission. Brock looked good. In truth, Brock always stole Brian’s attention, no matter what he was doing. Yet here, in the low light of the kickboxing class, with a confidence that was so rare in Brock’s aura, he looked flawless.
“He’s been coming twice a week for about two months,” Luke explained softly, a friendly arm dropped over Brian’s shoulders. “And he’s been leading everyone else to push themselves.”
“Brock’s always been motivated,” Brian breathed out, unsure why seeing Brock so fierce made his pride surge.
“Funny, he keeps saying you’re the reason he’s never given up.” Luke’s blunt response caught Brian’s ear, though he couldn’t turn away from Brock’s steady hook punches. “Brock claims that you’ve been the one teaching him how to lift weights, his form, and have encouraged him every step of the way. So all the progress he’s had this far? You’re a part of that.”
“I…” He trailed off slowly, unsure how to respond. Normally, he took compliments and ran with them. But when it came to Brock, he wanted to shower the praise all on the other man. Unsure of where to go with the information, he stayed silent, watching Brock’s movements. They weren’t perfect, since he was still a beginner. Sometimes he led with the wrong foot, or his punch didn’t hit high enough to be correctly placed. But he was giving it his all, and the stamina he’d been able to increase since his first trip to the gym was obvious. Brock’s shirt stuck to his form from the enduring lesson, showing the trimmed stomach and firmer thighs. Even his calves had better definition, his triceps tightening with each calculated punch.
But the best part of it all? Brock looked happy, which all that really mattered to Brian.
“Finish your current set of combinations, then put the gear away!” Luke’s sharp order beside him cleareded his mind just in time to catch Brock’s face turning toward them. His shock was immediate, and the confidence he’d had seconds earlier started to melt away. Trying not to let that self-esteem erode, Brian gave him a thumbs up, hoping his eased smile proved just how proud he was. Brock’s features wobbled for a second before he nodded, pulling his shoulders up to stand tall again. He bowed politely to Luke and rushed to help the Anthony move one of the standing heavy bags.
“He tell you not to tell me?” Brian asked, Luke shaking his head.
“Nah, just thought I’d save it for a rainy day. Just to remind you that you ain’t that terrible.” The words weren’t sweet or soft, just basic facts. That didn’t take away from Brian relaxing under the arm still holding his shoulders. Like a switch, his unease from before was gone.
Brian didn’t think he was a good trainer; he knew it.
Ahh I love these two together. ^.^ Such a happy dynamic. I can’t believe this story is coming to a close soon! I’ve had a lot of fun with it, and I missed writing bbs boys something terrible. Maybe I won’t stay too far this time? So as always, like, reblog, and let me know what you think!

Japanese Well-being Research
Throughout my time of practising mindfulness, I have come across the Japanese culture to look into, seeing as though a few Japanese anime films I’ve watched from Studio Ghibli contains scenes that are aesthetically peaceful made me wonder how they value their well-being. I was able to read a few books and research in order to benefit my development of producing a design/installation that’ll initially help those who are at home during the pandemic.
Books and cross ref – Japonisme Erin Niimi Longhurst
Onoiyari The Japanese art of compassion Erin Niimi Longhurst
Ikigai- Purpose / Finding Life’s Value
The Japanese concept of Ikigai is associated with an individuals purpose and values, for example; “the reason of getting up in the morning” what is your purpose or reasoning to start your day?. This means appreciating the smaller things in life which adds up to attracting grater things. There are ways in which this is practised throughout many others such as; getting and pen and paper and writing down your gratitude and showing compassion by all means helping others within the community this is known as Yuima-ru.
Hara Hachi Bu – 80% fullness
Looking nutritional aspects, the Japanese culture believes that the key to live longer is to practise of eating until you are 80% full. This was founded by the ancient Japanese suggesting that this allows your body the space it requires to digest which lowers the risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and many more. Their diet consists of  minimal processed foods, fresh, small amounts of animal protein, more seafood, fruits and vegetables. Additionally, these types of foods contains chemicals that are proven to make you feel good, such as serotonin (which regulates the mood to promote better sleep.)
Okwiana Island short documentary about long lividity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6mOA16ACgY
Kaizen
This is based on improvement, what can you do in your daily to improve it? This could be lifestyle, a job or a task that requires to change and grow from. Shukanka is a way forming new habits that’ll improve daily lives this could be meditation practise, yoga in order to find truth and alignment this is known as Jikiri concepted founded by The Japanese Buddhism known as self-power.
Forest Bathing -Nature
Shirin-Yoku means to practise mindfulness in nature. This is also known as a nature’s therapy, to support health and well-ness, because spending time in forests and green spaces can help improve moods and cause a positive effect on your cardiovascular/immune systems. This was founded by the University of Derby a study they approached on wellbeing and nature. The idea of Shirin-Yoku allows you to practise mindfulness while being in the forest.
Onsen-
This is known as a spring ritual, of using geothermal water to help relax the body from any pain or recovery. Mentally, this is good for reducing any problems such as stress which allows you to have space
For centuries Japanese people have been using the geothermal water of Onsen to help them relax and recover from physical ailments, and more recently it seems clear that this pastime also helps reduce your chances of having health issues in the first place. Bathing in the hot water of an Onsen not only allows you to cleanse yourself of stress and strains, but also gives you space for self to think about life.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From this research I was able to learn about how the simple things in life is maintained in our lives to be put into practise of being mindful and improving mental wellbeing. From this, I will further my research by seeing if  Japanese individuals practise their well-being when working in a busy setting this means contacting a few and understanding why ‘well-being’ should be recognised in the work industries and how it differentiates from the UK.
It is known as the economic power house of the Pacific with it’s 2% rate of unemployment which shows their loyalty towards businesses/companies are highly valued. The average hours an employee works in Japan is 9hrs and it’s said to be concerning if they over-work their hours. Just like in the UK most work places have an after party/drink after work, this is stressed by Japanese people as they feel as though they have to attend it which would show a good reputations towards them. A lot of these  employees are committed to working hard, yet they do develop high amounts of stress due to being in a setting with full on concentration and over working this can have major effects on their health such as heart attack, stroke and suicide. In March 2016 the health ministry of Japan founded that  there was nearly 3,000 deaths due to work-related stress. This is concerning as the way I see the Japanese culture is calm and peaceful from all the Japanese mindfulness books that are promoted in the UK it makes me perceive that the people who live in Japan must live a calm life, when really, work spaces and companies go through a lot of stress.

QUESTIONAIRE RESEARCH
INDIVIDUAL 1
Occupation : Managing Director, Dairy Import Corporation  (Tokyo)
Date : 27/12/20
1.)How do you look after your well-being/ wellness?
Usually, I would go for a walks with my family on the weekends, sometimes I’d go for a run in the forest to catch some fresh air, because I liked to have moments away from city life, work especially as a managing director can be demanding. I also eat healthily and drink a lot of herbal teas to stay balance because I believe what you eat can reflect you as a person.
2.)Do look after your well-being during work breaks?
I don’t really have time to think about it during breaks because we are constantly working and only thinking about getting the job done , and lunch breaks go fast.
3.)Does our work have a community ritual such as extra break hours to celebrate a co-workers birthday or eating breakfast together?
Sometimes in my office we’d make tea for each other. In Celebratory moments we’d meet to have a drink after work such as beer or before the holiday season.
4.)How do you manage stress?
I tried to meditate and do breathing exercises before I sleep and wake up to ease my morning anxiety. It helps me to remain calm throughout the demanding day of importing products.
5.)Should well-being be recognised in the work industry?
Yes it should be, stress can have a negative impact on health such as pressure on the heart. Especially in busy cities such as Tokyo mental health isn’t really discussed because everyone is so into their work.
6.)Does Japan have any mindfulness apps for the phone?
I haven’t checked
7.)Do you practise any of these, Ikiagi, Kaizan, Hara Hachi Bu and Shirin Yoku?
Ikigai is something we all have to do in our daily lives, it is also taught in schools and by our grandparents/parents.
I do practise Hara Hachi Bu and Shirin Yoku during blossom season these show the beauty of the world were living in and creates an atmosphere of peace.
Thank you for taking your time answering my questions I appreciate it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s interesting to know that comparing to the UK, nutrition plays an important role in Japan in order to care for well-being this may have an impact on the mind itself. It seems as though even though Japan are known as a country of ‘mindfulness’ within the calm culture this isn’t really looked upon throughout their lives at work. Mainly because it is demanding, thus, this can have an impact on their wellness. It’s also obvious to know that they use the simplicity of ‘fresh’ air as a way of de-stress and  therefore the idea of nature can be a link towards my installation.

Whether you’re a competitive athlete or have a job that requires you to be on the move, you’re likely familiar with hard work. Many occupations and hobbies require repetitive and continuous activities.
However, it’s possible to overdo it. This can be stressful on your body and mind — which can result in overexertion.
Overexerting yourself can lead to pain, discomfort, or even injury. That’s why it’s important to be mindful of your limits and listen to your body.
The good news is that it’s possible to protect yourself from overexertion. In this article, we’ll explore the causes and symptoms of overexertion, plus ways to avoid it.
What is overexertion?
When you push yourself too hard, it’s known as overexertion. This involves physical or mental effort that’s beyond your current abilities.
Overexertion depends on many factors, such as your:
age
medical history
environment or workplace
specific activity or task
Due to these factors, different people will become overexerted at different points. We all have our own physical and mental limits.
Overexertion can be unsafe. It can lead to serious injuries, like:
strains
sprains
fractures
It may also limit your ability to keep doing an activity in the future.
What can cause overexertion?
Typically, overexertion is related to certain activities or motions. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common causes of overexertion.
Repetitive movements
When you repeatedly move a joint or muscle over a long period of time, it can lead to overexertion. The repetitive movements can put strain on your body, leading to pain or discomfort.
Repetitive movements are often associated with activities like:
using a computer mouse
typing or writing
working on an assembly line
kicking, hitting, or throwing a ball
training for sports
playing musical instruments
sewing or knitting
Improper technique
Overexertion may stem from doing an activity or task incorrectly. This can place stress on your muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues and cause overexertion injuries.
Examples of improper technique include:
lifting items incorrectly
sitting with poor posture
standing in awkward positions
using the wrong form during exercise
not wearing knee pads while kneeling
using the wrong gear or equipment (like chairs without back support)
Sudden body movements
A sudden, forceful movement can also cause overexertion. This is more likely to happen if your technique is incorrect.
Abrupt movements that can lead to overexertion injuries include:
twisting
bending
pushing
pulling
throwing
reaching
Prolonged activity
If you continuously do an activity without regular breaks, you’ll eventually become fatigued. The excess physical effort can be hard on your body.
Prolonged activity might be related to:
overtraining for a sport or physical fitness
doing an activity or exercise too many days in a row or without sufficient breaks
Similarly, you can develop mental overexertion after focusing on a cognitive activity for an extended period of time. For instance, you may feel mentally burned out after many hours of studying or working.
Extreme temperatures
Another potential cause is doing an activity in extreme temperatures.
When it’s very hot or cold, your body needs to work extra hard to maintain its normal temperature. As a result, you may need to push yourself harder to do basic activities, resulting in overexertion.
Overexertion due to extreme temperatures is often associated with activities like outdoor manual labor and exercising outdoors.
powered by Rubicon Project
What are the signs and symptoms of overexertion?
If you’ve overexerted yourself, you may have the following signs and symptoms:
Pain
Pain is a common sign that you’re overexerting yourself. You may have pain that feels sharp or achy. It may also be more of a burning, tingling, throbbing, or pinching sensation.
If you have pain, stop the activity immediately. Rest and take a break. If the pain continues or get worse, talk with your doctor.
Overuse injury
An overuse injury, or a repetitive strain injury, typically develops slowly over time. Some examples of common overuse injuries include:
carpal tunnel syndrome
stress (hairline) fractures
tennis elbow
Common symptoms of overuse injuries include:
pain
tingling
numbness
stiffness
weakness in the affected area
It’s possible that you may only feel these symptoms when you’re doing a specific activity.
You’ll typically need to connect with a doctor, so they can help you treat this type of injury. Treatment for a repetitive strain injuries often involves:
RICE treatment, which stands for rest, ice, compression, elevation
securing the affected area with a splint or brace
steroid injections
medications to reduce inflammation and pain
exercises to strengthen the affected area
changing your technique and avoiding positions that overextend the affected area
Fatigue
Another common symptom is fatigue. It can be physical or mental, depending on the cause of overexertion.
Signs of physical fatigue can include:
“heavy” limbs, even when doing low intensity activities
persistent soreness
poor physical performance
slow recovery after training
Mental fatigue may cause symptoms such as:
brain fog
difficulty concentrating
increased stress or anxiety
mood changes
depression
In either case, avoid forcing yourself to work for extended periods of time.
Allow yourself to rest and focus on healthy lifestyle habits, like:
eating nutritious meals and snacks
doing gentle forms of exercise
staying hydrated
getting good quality sleep
Increased injuries or sickness
Overexertion makes it difficult for your body to heal after strenuous activities. Likewise, it can impair your immune system, making you more prone to sickness.
If you keep getting injured or sick, it may be time to take a mental or physical break from what you’ve been doing. Again, eating healthy and getting enough sleep can help your body recover.
Difficulty breathing
If you’re unable to breathe during a physical task, try reducing the intensity of the activity.
Avoid holding your breath, and breathe deeply to help your body and brain get the oxygen they need. Deep breathing can also help your body relax.
How to avoid overexertion
There are ways to avoid physical overexertion while working or doing physical activities.
Follow these tips to prevent physical burnout and injuries:
Stretch and warm up your muscles before doing an activity.
Take breaks every 30 minutes, especially if you usually stay in the same position for many hours.
Do exercises, like wrist exercises, to keep your joints healthy.
Learn the proper technique and form for the task or exercise you’re doing. Ask for help if you don’t know what the correct form is.
Lift heavy objects with your legs, not your back. Bend your knees before lifting any heavy items, and keep the items tucked close to your body.
Avoid overexercising and switch up your routine.
Try to include at least 1 day of rest per week in your fitness routine.
Don’t try to do too much too soon with physical activity. Slowly increase your activity duration, intensity, and frequency.
Rest after repetitive or strenuous activities.
If you feel mentally exhausted or overwhelmed from work, parenting, or daily stressors, you can take certain steps to help you cope. Some options include:
Try lightening your load. Look for ways to delegate tasks and responsibilities to others. Enlist the help of people who can help you with duties like childcare, running errands, or caring for loved ones.
Take a break. Schedule a vacation, long weekend, or just clear your calendar for a few hours to focus on doing something that brings you joy.
Exercise. A 2013 research review showed that exercise can be especially beneficial for stress management. It also has the ability to protect you against many stress-related health problems. Even a brisk 20-minute walk can lift your mood, make you feel more relaxed, and provide mental health benefits.
Try relaxation techniques. Find time in your day, even if it’s just 10 or 15 minutes, to try doing a technique that’s been proven to lower stress levels. Some options include meditation, yoga, tai chi, breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation.
Prioritize your sleep. Sleep is essential for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Aim to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.
Keep a gratitude journal. Using a journal to remind yourself of the many things that you’re thankful for can help you focus on the positive aspects of your life instead of the difficult things.
Look into medical treatment. A mental health professional or therapist can provide you with tools to help you cope with mental exhaustion and stress.
The bottom line
Overexertion is typically caused by repetitive movements, sudden motions, or prolonged effort. It may also be related to incorrect technique or working in extreme t

The Results Only Work Environment Has Many Benefits
Tumblr media
Too many businesses lose sight of the fact that the ultimate aim must be to get benefits. It feels like corporate culture has changed to an emphasis on regulating and directing employee routines and behaviour, even if this emphasis doesn't have anything to do with attaining goals or concrete outcomes. Fortunately, another change is occurring as some organizations have begun to adopt ROWE, or the consequences Only Work Environment. This sort of work atmosphere, which was popularized by bestselling authors Jody Thompson and Cali Ressler, has helped a huge selection of organizations, and it may help your company get back to what really matters - results.
How Can You Establish a Results Only Work Environment?
Thompson and Ressler specify the Results Just Work Environment for a strategy that simply puts results ahead of all other concerns within an organization. Basically, it's a system which enables supervisors and managers to define goals and possible accomplishments clearly and in a manner that aligns with the particular skills and abilities of the employees. Through this process, supervisors have the ability to break away from focusing on insignificant details of worker behavior. This sort of work environment gives workers greater freedom, and it assists organizations in the process of accomplishing their attempts, although ROWE remains somewhat controversial.
In this new type of work environment, managers handle work rather than managing individual employees. Because of this, managers carry a larger burden to have the ability to identify what"finished" resembles. If they are unable to specify goals obviously, the results-driven environment will fail. However, if managers have the ability to express the desired results for their group members, it may work amazingly well.
Some of the key benefits of a Results Only Work Environment:
Valuable specialists do not get pulled away from their tasks to attend meaningless meetings It raises employee morale, especially if workers show dedication to the company It takes the fact that workers have important and purposeful lives beyond work It eliminates wasteful spending on things and other expenses that are not associated with impacts It does away with time thieving since people are generally where they want to be in the proper times It boosts employee liability Giving employees the opportunity to work from home rather than driving back and forth daily benefits the environment It brings less strain and engenders healthier lifestyles for workers It enhances an organization's ability to attract and retain the most valuable talent It Works in the Real World
GAP, Edmunds.com and Dynatronix are amazing examples of organizations that have found success by enacting results-driven strategies. However, the most enlightening example of the value of a results-driven company is exemplified by Yahoo's recent directive to move away from the results-only idea. Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, made a significant shift in coverage recently, which removed telecommuting. Basically, this new directive advised workers to begin coming to work daily or find employment elsewhere.
You might examine the situation with Yahoo and believe the results-driven approach just didn't work for the business. However, the simple fact is that the strategy failed because management employees was not able to provide clear, concise and purposeful direction. If managers were able to satisfy their appropriate roles within the results-driven civilization, the establishment of such an unpopular and acute policy change wouldn't have been necessary. Time will tell whether Mayer's policy choice will help the company, but several experts believe that the change is only going to hurt Yahoo's standing among tech firms.
The Future is Inevitable
The lesson to be learned from this is that managers will need to be certain that employees understand what outcomes look like. The results only work environment is only beneficial when handling offers clear objectives, but some management employees are simply not able to meet with the challenge. Luckily, the tide will change significantly as fresh talent from Gen Y climbs into the management level. The people of Generation Y have a greater willingness to participate in work environments that differ from conventional versions, and they understand the benefits of new work environments far better than members of earlier generations. What is more, they know how fitting talents with demands is the secret to success in business.

People Need to Change the Perception About the Environment
Introduction
Each year people celebrate World Environment Day. From local bodies to the greatest decision-making bodies, our fellow citizens have campaigned with a excellent voice that we've limited resources and we shouldn't over use them. Have these persistent campaigns percolated into the floor? Can we see the discernible shift in the mindset of people? These are the very important questions we will need to look at if we must keep something for the future generations. The simple fact of the matter is that things haven't changed much on the floor and environment disintegration is occurring everywhere. In this guide, we would be seriously analyzing the details of the ground to determine where we stand on environment preservation.
World Environment Day
We've been celebrating World Environment Day with great pomp and gaiety each year. We've campaigned hard to keep order and use the resources with excellent care. Many celebrities, such as popular celebrities, came with their cherished views on environment preservation. People have spent lakhs of rupees on the subject of looking after the environment.
Response to World Environment Day
A number of the government departments like Gurkha branch of Indian Army went from its barracks to clean the environment. In response to the Clean India campaign, the pet project of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, many people came out and began cleaning the environment . When people saw the actors and functionaries on the road with a broom, they began coming out in massive numbers. However, the enthusiasm died down as soon as the media glare diminished. Police have conducted many contests for the benefit of kids to allow them to understand the requirement of keeping the environment clean and undamaged. As part of the initiative, they created campaigns through the medium of All India Radio (AIR). These campaigns had slogans on environment preservation and they targeted the remote villages which don't have television sets.
Reality Check
Regardless of the campaigns and sloganeering, nothing on the ground has shifted. The forest cover is gradually diminishing as a result of felling of trees. The only issue is that deforestation has picked up and people have become conscious of the requirement of trees in cooling the environment. It must pick up at the gigantic scale to cancel the felling of trees, which can be very rampant in many areas of the nation. The police are turning a blind eye towards these harmful tendencies. As a consequence of this, the soil erosion and landslides have occurred in many regions of the country. These environment indicators reveal that things aren't in good shape. Unless people handle these items on war-footing, the days aren't that far off when desertification of land gets quite fast. So, we will need to pull up our sleeves and start doing whatever we can to conserve the environment from those men and women who wish to exploit it in the title of commercialization.

Welcome to the Heart Pirates, Nami-ya Chapter 6: Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
“The Grand Ballroom” was certainly an apt description. The marble dancefloor was inlaid with veins of gold and sparkling quartz, its flat surface so polished it hurt to look at. Plush, wine red carpet lined the perimeter, perfectly matching the cushions of elaborately carved loveseats and couches. Six-foot tall, solid gold candelabras were scattered throughout the room, the flickering flames dancing as gracefully as the guests. Enormous, stained-glass windows depicting hedonistic scenes stretched from floor to ceiling, the colored glass obscuring the view of the outside world. Burgundy velvet drapes trimmed in gold were artfully hung throughout the room, their heavy material casting deep shadows in private nooks perfect for illicit rendezvous.
To the side was a massive buffet, the tables straining under trays of assorted meats, exotic fruits, decadent pastries, tartlets, brie, beef wellingtons, deviled eggs, and more. A literal fountain of wine stood at the center of the smorgasbord, cherubs pouring the intoxicating liquid out of decanters into the guests’ crystal glasses.
The ceiling was the most impressive aspect, though. Above the crowd hung eight massive, golden chandeliers in the shape of octopi, each winding tentacle clutching a light the size of a human head. Multi-faceted crystals dripped off their bulbous bodies like drops of water, making it appear they’d just emerged from the sea and casting shards of light and prismatic rainbows dancing about the walls and floor.
Not to be outdone, the guests that milled about wore their finest costumes, with ballgowns, doublets, tailcoats, hats, capes, masks, and jewelry made from silks, satins, chiffon, precious gems, and exotic furs and feathers. Maids clad in short, tight, copper uniforms wove through the crowd, offering drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and petit fours. A small orchestra was set up in the far corner of the room, filling the air with their slow, elegant music.
It was exactly the kind of party that had Nami salivating. Rich men with thick wallets and wealthy women wearing expensive jewelry were laid out more temptingly than the food.
Still, the décor did bring up a few questions. “If the Baron hates seafood so much, why all the octopi?” she asked curiously, studying the ceiling.
Behind the mask, Law looked thoughtful. “I’d assume it’s a vanity thing; according to my intel, he was touted as ‘The Golden Octopus’ during his time in the Navy.”
“Why?”
“Probably a reference to the number of organizations he was involved in, though there were also rumors about him having an octopus-related Devil Fruit. That seems unlikely, though.”
“What makes you say that?”
“No Devil Fruit user would keep his important files in a Seastone safe. Just touching the damn thing would drain his energy. Besides, don’t you think the World Government would have made that common knowledge to strike fear into pirates? They’ve never exactly been shy about bragging about their officers’ powers.”
Nervously checking her cat mask to ensure it was tightly secured, she said lowly, “You’d better be right; if it turns out he can turn into an octopus or something I’m charging you for shitty intel.”
Casually, the pair meandered through the crowd, giving polite greetings and sizing up potential prey. The Cat Thief had already picked out a few marks; men who’d cast her salacious leers, despite her being on another’s arm. They’d be easily distracted by her cleavage and flattery and wouldn’t even notice their pockets getting progressively lighter. Even better, Law’s presence would also give her the ideal excuse to turn down their inevitable, unwanted advances. Nothing fended off creeps like a jealous boyfriend, after all, and in high society, you never wanted to risk causing a scene. She’d just have to make sure he knew when to step in.
As if he could hear her thoughts, Law murmured in her ear, “I don’t plan on letting you out of my sight, so if you need me, adjust your hairpins and I’ll come to your rescue.”
“‘Rescue’ is a strong word, but I appreciate it,” she responded, tone dripping with false affection as she straightened his lapels, acting as the ever-attentive beau. “Tell me, Adrian, are you the type to tolerate other men flirting with your girlfriend?”
“Of course not. What’s mine is mine, and men challenge that claim at their own peril.” His reply was smooth as polished obsidian, one hand possessively resting on her waist as he steered them over to the side of the dance floor. The thick leather of the black glove shielded her from the heat of his palm, but the weight and press of his fingers into her delicate flesh made up for it.
Teasingly, she tapped the tip of his beak. “That doesn’t sound very doctor-like. Isn’t there a Hippocratic Oath you’re supposed to be following?”
“There are exceptions to every rule.” Long fingers gently lifted her chin so he could gaze deeply into her eyes. “There’s no oath I wouldn’t break to keep my woman at my side.”
Damn, that line should not be so hot, she thought, the faint blush painting her cheeks visible just beneath the bottom of her mask. It was surprising how easily Law managed to turn on the charm and hide the far creepier meaning of his words. If she were an average woman with no knowledge of his criminal activities or identity as one of the most feared up-and-coming pirates of the current generation, she might swoon a little bit.
Nami really needed more practice dealing with handsome men flirting with her. She was far too used to friendly, harmless perverts like Brook and Sanji, or disgusting lechers like Absalom. Besides being physically attractive, Law’s flirtations were harder to brush off because she completely believed him when he said he was pickier about his women than the rest of his crew. Perhaps that was why he got her so flustered; he didn’t wear his desires on his sleeve, so his attention felt more…focused, like sunlight through a magnifying glass, burning away her defenses.
“And what about you?” he coaxed, lifting her hand to delicately press the tips of her fingers to his lips as his eyes bore into hers. Electric shocks tingled up her hand as heat coiled within her belly. It was way too easy to imagine him giving her that look in a dark bedroom as he slowly stripped off her clothes. “Are you the type to play with a man’s heart? The type to stray? Or are you just so naturally charming you don’t realize the kind of thoughts you put in men’s minds?”
It took her a moment to realize he was asking for the sake of the cover; to establish his reaction when he barged in on her flirtations with other men.
His interest and sensual actions were solely for the sake of the cover. For business, not pleasure. None of it was real, and she grasped that fact like a lifeline. It was so much easier to remain in control if she remembered that it wasn’t Law that was flirting with her, but Dr. Goodheart Adrian, Chaton Bellemere’s surgeon lover. Hell, he was wearing a mask—she could easily pretend that he wasn’t her dangerously attractive temporary captain, but another mark she could tease and deceive with no consequences.
Lips quirking in a saucy, mischievous grin, she leaned in close, breath ghosting across his throat as she replied, “I’d never cheat, but I am the kind of woman who likes to see if she can get her boyfriend jealous. There’s something so arousing about seeing such a normally composed doctor so worked up over little old me.”
Her response made Law pause, blinking owlishly in surprise before his grip on her hand tightened ever-so-slightly, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed. “How jealous do you want?” he rasped, giving the pad of her middle finger a light nip. “I’m happy to break a few jaws before I carry you off.”
A tiny hiss of pleasure escaped between her teeth before she regained control. Pressing a chaste kiss to the corner of his sharp jaw, just below his ear, she murmured, “I’m sure these men don’t want any trouble; just come up with an excuse to lead me away. A little decorum goes a long way, after all.”
She’d planned on flouncing away and getting to work mingling and stealing, but her whole body froze as she caught a familiar scent.
Tobacco smoke, thick and sweet wafted up her nose, and as her heart stuttered in her chest, Nami slowly turned her head to the side, following the grey trail to a large, imposing figure glowering at the crowd as if he’d like to arrest half the people in the room. His formal suit was as white as his hair, his forest green tie and matching domino mask the only pop of color. With the long scar down his face and signature cigar, the mask did nothing to hide his identity.
“What the hell is he doing here?” she squeaked, panicked and already trying to figure out the best way to escape.
“Hina, what the fuck am I doing here?!” Smoker growled, not bothering to keep his voice down.
Beside him, a beautiful woman with long, sakura pink hair and a cigarette dangling from her full, red lips sighed. She was dressed in a stunning, form-fitting silver gown embroidered with fluttering blackbirds, the silk flowing down her figure like mercury. Her mask, also silver but with a black feathered plume, hung absently from her fingers. “Because you owe me. After all the strings I’ve pulled over the years to keep you from getting demoted back down to Chore Boy, this is the least you can do.”
“Look, Hina, I know I owe you, but you could have asked me to do your paperwork for a month or something. Fancy crap with stuffed shirts isn’t my thing, especially when it means playing nice with that bastard. Why couldn’t you take someone Fullbody or Django? They’d be happy to shower you with attention and ask you to waltz and that other gentlemanly shit.”
Shoulders tense as she carefully observed the crowd, she stated, “Precisely because this isn’t your thing. I need you to stand next to me looking grumpy and miserable to keep stupid ass-kissers and perverted old octopi from asking me to dance. Hina hates that old creep.”
Though his teeth ground against his cigar, the corner of his mouth lifted into the barest hint of a smile. “Well, when you put it like that, I guess I am the perfect man for the job.”
“Did you know they were going to be here?” Nami asked under her breath, pressing close to her partner. Smoker was only about fifteen feet away, but the din of the crowd and orchestral music helped mask her voice. Her every instinct screamed for her to run, but she knew any sudden movement around the pirate hunter would capture his undivided attention, like a rabbit trying to escape a wolf. Inwardly, she seethed; if Uni had managed to modify the guest list, surely he would have known a certain Marine was coming, right? Why didn’t anyone warn her? Everybody knew there was nothing Smoker would like better than to capture and imprison the Straw Hats.
Her anger ebbed slightly as Law pulled her a bit closer, doing his best to shield her with his body. Though his poker face was still in place, she could feel the tension coiled in his muscles. “I knew Black Cage was invited, but her RSVP was a ‘no.’ I’d assumed she was cleaning up the mess of the war or helping track down the prisoners Mugiwara released from Impel Down. White Chase was definitely not on the guest list.”
“What do we do?”
“Keep calm. It’s a big party, and it shouldn’t be too hard to avoid them. Even if they notice us, our disguises should allay suspicion, and there’s no way they’d expect the two of us together.”
He was right; even if they did somehow recognize Law, they’d never expect the navigator of a rival crew on his arm, meaning she might be able to make a break for it. She wasn’t too worried about his safety; he was a strong fighter and could teleport himself to the other side of the island in a heartbeat. She was the one who would be screwed if she caught a Marine’s eye.
Surreptitiously, Nami peeked around Law’s chest to watch the pair, hoping for some sign they’d move on to another part of the ballroom, but soon found herself staring at the beautiful captain. Bad as her experiences with the World Government were, she couldn’t help but admire a strong Marine woman. And though the hairstyle was different, the color and cigarette briefly brought visions of her adoptive mother, and she wondered if Hina had heard of Bellemere. There weren’t too many female officers in the Marines; had she been renowned enough for someone like Hina to look up to? Or was her decision to give up military life to raise two orphaned girls treated as a disgrace? The Navy hadn’t offered any financial assistance or seemed to care when she’d been murdered by pirates, so the latter seemed more likely.
Of course, a trained soldier would sense she was being watched, and Hina inclined her head towards the incognito couple. “You’ve been staring at me. Why?” she asked suspiciously, taking a long drag of her cigarette as her dark eyes narrowed.
Luckily, years of swindling, being a member of Arlong’s crew, and generally always needing to get herself out of trouble had made Nami a pretty good actress, even under pressure. “I was just admiring your dress. It’s absolutely gorgeous!” she gushed, making her voice as airheaded and overexcited as she could under the Marine’s scrutiny. “Wherever did you get it?”
Apparently, her ruse worked, as she gave a small but pleased smile. “Thank you. There’s a shop in Alabasta that carries beautiful silks. I stumbled across it while on a mission and decided to treat myself. When I learned I’d be attending this…party, a dressmaker on Sabaody made them into a custom gown for me.”
“Alabasta! How exotic! Oh, darling, can we go there on our next holiday?” she asked, looking up at Law, wide brown eyes begging him to play along. “I simply must have a dress like that!”
Catching on, the doctor once more pulled her close, dropping a kiss to her hair. “If that’s what you want, that’s what you’ll get. Nothing’s too good for you, sweetheart.”
She gave him a dazzling grin, wrapping her arms around his waist in an enthusiastic hug. “Really?! Oh, thank you, cuddle bear!”
Internally, Nami cheered in victory as his jaw tightened and blue tint came to his cheeks. She might not get to kick his ass, but she could still make his night hell in all the little ways. “You’re…welcome,” he ground out.
“Hina-chan!” a loud, overly cheerful voice called out from the crowd, and an older, obese man strode over. His tuxedo was gold silk and embroidered with scarlet octopi, a long, crimson cape trailing behind him. His grey hair was thin, braided into eight little rattails, and slicked back with so much oil it gleamed like grease on the water. A gold octopus mask hung from his neck, the tentacles a writhing mass and encrusted with rubies for suckers. “How marvelous! You were able to make it after all!”
Both Marines noticeably stiffened at his approach. “Well, after your call, my superiors were convinced that attending your party was more important than attending to my duties,” she said, tone so frosty it made Drum Island seem like a tropical paradise.
“Oh, don’t be that way, Hina-chan,” Baron Harpin chuckled, giving her an appreciative leer. The way the captain tensed further made it clear the feeling wasn’t mutual. “Always so serious, even back when you were a trainee. Really, you should be grateful I pushed so hard to get you a night off—it pains me to think of such a beautiful flower wilting on the battlefield. I swear I’ll never forgive Sengoku for denying my request to have you as my personal secretary.”
“Hina’s too damn good a soldier to waste on some pathetic desk job,” Smoker’s deep, rough voice cut in, muscular arms crossed tightly over his massive chest. “And she ain’t wilting—she thrives out there.”
The Baron regarded him with undisguised disdain. “I don’t recall inviting you.”
“I’m Hina’s plus-one, or did you not notice that on the RSVP? Pretty sloppy for the head of Navy Intelligence. Sorry—ex-head of Navy Intelligence.”
The pirate hunter’s biting comment struck a nerve, as disregard turned into outright hatred. “Careful, Smoker; I may be retired, but I’ve still got plenty of pull with the Admirals, plus several other organizations. One word from me and your career is over.”
A threatening step forward was all Smoker was able to take before Hina held him back. “He’s not worth it,” she murmured before insistently leading him away.
“Just one moment, Hina-chan,” their host sing-songed. When the woman in question acknowledged him over her shoulder, he gave a haughty grin. “I know I permitted you a plus-one, but that’s because I’d assumed you’d bring along someone with more…class. I surround myself with only the finest things, after all. I’m rather inclined to have him escorted out for the sake of my invited guests; trash like him tends to ruin the ambiance.”
Turning fully towards him, though still keeping a restraining hand on Smoker’s bicep, she stated, “What do you want?”
His returning leer was as greasy as his hair. “A smile. Surely such a rare and radiant thing will counteract your…date’s foul appearance.”
“Oh, that fuckin—” Smoker growled, but Hina’s silent glare stopped him. Taking a deep, fortifying breath, the Marine captain plastered on a bland, completely hollow smile for their former superior before dragging her old friend out to the gardens to smoke in peace.
“Be sure to save me a dance, Hina-chan!” he called after them, entirely too gleeful to have the last word. As he beamed at his guests, his black, watery eyes fell on Nami, and she swore she could feel his gaze creep over her like a writhing mass of tentacles.
Not wanting to hang around lest Harpin decided to come over and introduce himself, she gave Law’s elbow a slight tug, and he willingly let her lead him away towards one of the little alcoves. “Well, he seems…yeah, he’s a total creep.”
“I feel like I need a chemical shower just being in his presence,” Law conferred lowly, grabbing them both a glass of champagne before ducking behind the curtains. The drapes mostly hid them from view, but he strategically positioned himself so his shoulder blocked the slight gap in the heavy velvet, yet still allowed him to notice anyone approaching. “Pity Black Cage didn’t deck him in the jaw.”
“I was hoping Smoker would make him eat his own mask.” She swiftly changed the subject, unwilling to risk one of their fellow guests overhearing them badmouth their host. “I was not expecting those two. I mean, not just here—do you think they’re dating?”
Law rubbed his chin in consideration. “I hope not. Any progeny they might produce would be an absolute nightmare to pirates the world over. The tobacco industry would be thrilled, though.”
Unbidden, a giggle escaped her as an image of a tiny Marine with Smoker’s scowl and Hina’s pink hair popped into her head, an oversized cigar comically protruding from the child’s mouth.
“Of course, that’s assuming they don’t both die of lung cancer before then,” he added absently, sipping his drink. Grey eyes swept the room over his shoulder, noting that most of the guests had the tact to look away from the alcoves, especially those occupied by couples engaged in private moments. A long arm wrapped around Nami’s tiny waist, pulling the gorgeous woman against his hip so he could murmur in her ear, “But enough about that. What else should I know about my lovely Bellemere? How did we meet?”
Playing along, she ran the tips of her fingers along his chest beneath his jacket. They should have discussed this earlier, but in the craziness of the mission prep, it had fallen by the wayside. “At an auction, of course,” she supplied easily. “There was a wonderful mermaid piece that I had taken an interest in.”
A low chuckle caressed her as he wound a lock of purple hair around his finger. The easiest lies to keep up were ones based on truth, and there was no hiding his amusement at how she’d spun the debacle at Sabaody. “Of course. You and your companions got separated, and I graciously offered to keep you company until you could be reunited. Not long after, I performed life-saving surgery on your friend, and you’ve been at my side ever since.”
His arrogant tone made her roll her eyes. “Does Dr. Goodheart have any notable achievements to his name? I can’t imagine I’d be interested in a mediocre doctor, and you must have gotten your medical license somewhere.”
“Gotten a what now?”
When she stared at him in open horror, jaw dropping to the floor, he couldn’t stop himself from laughing. “I reattached a girl’s leg during my first year at Serenity Hospital in the North Blue,” he stated with a grin. “I was accepted into med school at fifteen and finished my surgical residency in only three years, and I also have several published papers on the effects of lead poisoning in children.”
“Really?” she replied, skepticism dripping from her lips.
“Of course. I could only learn so much through books and practicing on my friends, so I took on the identity of Goodheart Adrian so I could perfect my skills. ‘Trafalgar Law’ was a name I didn’t want gaining notoriety until I had the power and skills to protect myself.”
Well, that was quite the revelation. Frankly, she’d always figured he was only a doctor in the back-alley sense, since no hospital would be crazy enough to give him an actual license. But to have had a second identity for so long…
“Why?”
Grey eyes narrowed behind his mask at her inquiry. “Focus on questions relevant to our current situation, sweetheart.”
Cheeks puffed out indignantly, she let the topic drop, mostly out of irritation that he was right. Besides, she didn’t want to get to know the real Law, did she? “Fine. Where’d you take me on our first date? I’m sure a doctor’s salary could afford a fancy dinner, at least.”
As if a switch had been flipped, his charming persona returned. She knew it was all for show, especially given how the alcove didn’t completely hide them if someone really felt like being a voyeur, but did he have to rub those distracting little circles against her spine? “Since you have such expensive tastes, we went to the En L’iar Rose restaurant on Chardonnay Island. It’s known for its exquisite wines and decadent foods. You ordered the Pane Caldo while I had the stuffed mushrooms, and we shared a plate of assorted artisan cheeses, fruits, and chocolates for dessert.”
“That’s…an acceptable choice, I suppose.” A small, irrational coil of envy tightened in her belly. She wasn’t mad that Law had probably taken some other woman on such a romantic outing—just that no guy had put that much effort into a date with her.
His smirk was decidedly wicked. “You were such a tease with that fruit, eating it so seductively I nearly lost my mind. It took all my willpower not to pin you down and have my way with you.”
Memories of how she’d teased him with the mikans made her thighs clench, as she was suddenly all too aware that she’d been playing with fire that day. He’d definitely enjoyed her attentions and it so easily could have been turned on her. The tips of her ears turned pink as she instinctively tried to push him away, but his muscular arm kept her anchored to his side. “Too bad I’m a classy lady who doesn’t just give it up to a guy because he bought her a fancy dinner,” she snapped quietly.
“Of course you’re not; I wouldn’t have taken interest in you if you were,” he assured, tilting her face to the right and pressing a kiss to her masked cheek to hide her pissed expression. “I’m a man who likes a challenge—a woman easily seduced would bore me. And it’s intriguing how you’re so flirtatious one moment, yet easily flustered the next; makes me wonder what you’ll be like once I finally do get you in my bed.”
Face flushing to match her ears, Nami wasn’t sure if it was due to anger or embarrassment. She also wasn’t sure if he was speaking as Adrian or Law, and it was playing havoc with her sense of control. “Well, you’ll be wondering for quite some time—at the very least until you’ve gotten me a 300-carat diamond.”
A low chuckle rumbled deep in his chest as he released her. “I think we’ve got enough of the basics down to pass as a new couple. Ready to get to work?”
It took a moment and a few deep breaths to regain her composure. Her heart was beating too quickly for her liking, and she desperately needed some distance. “Hell yes. Time is money, and right now, I don’t have nearly enough of either.”
XXX
Over an hour later, Nami was immensely pleased with her haul. She’d swiped the wallets of six dance partners, along with a gold wristwatch, emerald-studded cufflinks, and some rings. She’d been extremely careful not to steal more than one thing from each target, and plenty of her dance partners had left unscathed; after all, if every man she came in contact with found their wallets missing, she’d be the prime suspect.
Finding dance partners and wealthy marks alike had been easier than getting Sanji to bring her tea. Men had practically swarmed her the moment she’d broken away from Law, and though she could feel his piercing gaze on her back, he stayed out of her way so she could work her magic.
So far, he’d only had to step in once, when a man with a face like a horse and a unicorn mask to match had gotten a little too handsy, swooping in like a bird of prey and sending her victim scurrying off with nothing more than a sharp glare and a couple cutting remarks. Still, the way he’d clutched his cane told her he’d wanted to do a lot more, reminding her that the Surgeon of Death was not a man to be messed with. While a jealous boyfriend was a great creep deterrent, too much could put off her potential marks. For the sake of that evening’s profits, she vowed to only call him in as a last resort.
She would swear until her dying breath it had nothing to do with the thrill she got at hearing Law defend her honor in his deep voice or the way she could feel the muscles beneath his suit flex when he clutched her to him possessively.
It was nearly nine-thirty when a skinny man in an elaborate peacock mask and flamboyant suit to match lead her onto the dancefloor. He’d approached swinging an emerald and sapphire-encrusted pocket watch like a pendulum, strutting about in a way that instantly practically begged her to rob him. Only men with more money than brains walked like that.
“So, Ms. Chaton,” Kujakumaru began as he pulled her close, “what do you do for a living?”
As easily as Zoro drew a sword, she turned on the charm. “Oh, I’ve done a little modeling,” she replied, fluttering her eyelashes. “Mostly swimsuits and the like.”
“Really? You?”
She blinked, brows furrowing behind her mask in confusion and mild annoyance. “Yes. Not in any big magazines, but I’ve only just started, after all.”
“Ah, no wonder I hadn’t heard of you,” he stated, looking her up and down, eyes lingering on the swell of her chest. “I’ve dated quite a few models, actually. I suppose when you surround yourself with the most gorgeous women in the world, you don’t notice those who are less than a perfect ten.”
An annoyed tic formed on her forehead, thankfully hidden by the cat mask. Sure, he couldn’t see her face, but the way his eyes were practically glued to her cleavage proved he didn’t find her hideous. And what right did he have to call her less than a ten? Her bounty poster was ogled by pirates all over the Grand Line! “Well, sorry I’m not up to your usual standards, Mr. Kujakumaru,” she ground out as politely as she could.
At the brief display of temper, he quickly backtracked, “Oh, I never said that! Of course you’re beautiful, but I’d only rank you less than a ten because you’ve still got a few more years to go before you’ve fully bloomed!” he insisted, gaze flickering between her face and breasts pointedly.
Oh, nice save, she thought sarcastically. It was all too easy to catch onto this idiot’s game; he was trying to bring down her confidence in hopes preying on any insecurities. Women who knew their worth were much harder to lure into bed, after all. “Well, my boyfriend hasn’t had any complaints,” she stated matter-of-factly.
“I’m sure he hasn’t; after all, looks aren’t everything.” When her hazelnut eyes narrowed, he continued, “You misunderstand me; I mean that modeling is just as much about who you know as what you look like. Making friends with the right people and whatnot.”
“Of course.” It was almost funny; the whole night, she’d put up with men looking to get into her pants without so much as blinking, yet this guy was making her lose her cool. Then again, none of the others had tried negging her. People like that deserved a very special place in hell as far as she was concerned. If they’d been in a bar instead of some fancy party, he’d be unconscious on the floor for his comments.
“If you really want to be a model, I have some connections to the West Blue’s top agencies. Of course, I only pass along the names of people I’m personally close to.”
Though she plastered on a smile, inwardly she rolled her eyes. He was the third man that night offering to help her “modeling career” with his “connections,” but they’d at least done their best to stroke her ego first. He hadn’t even waited for her response before slipping his hand off her waist to slide across her rear.
That little grope just cost him eighty million belli, she thought, using his moment of distraction to carefully undo the chain of his pocket watch from his doublet. To disguise the action, she pushed him back slightly, looking away coyly. “Oh, that’s so sweet of you! Unfortunately, it’s more of a hobby than anything else; if I became some big star, I wouldn’t have as much freedom. I love traveling and shopping too much to waste my time in some studio.”
“Sounds like an expensive lifestyle,” he pressed, undeterred by her refusal, just like she’d anticipated. Nami was plenty familiar with men like him; born with a silver spoon in his mouth, raised to believe that he was entitled to anything he wanted and when a woman rebuffed him, she didn’t really mean it.
He was the kind of guy she would love to have Sanji kick into the sun.
Lacking the chivalrous love-cook, however, Nami settled for her current bodyguard. “It is, but Dr. Goodheart has been an excellent provider. His research takes him to so many interesting places, and he’s been adamant about bringing me along. He gets lonely without me.”
“Then I’m surprised he’s letting you dance with another man.”
A mischievous smirk touched the corner of her lips. “We have an arrangement—he doesn’t like to dance, but I simply can’t get enough of it. So, he lets me have as many partners as I please, so long as I never dance with anyone more than once.” As the last notes of the waltz floated through the air, she knew now was the time to make her getaway. Pushing up onto her tip-toes, she murmured in his ear as she carefully lifted the watch from his pocket, slipping it into the tight cuff of her billowy sleeve, “Otherwise, he gets terribly jealous. Normally, he’s so cool and collected, but he’s got a dark temper. It’s hot, if I’m perfectly honest.”
She felt Kujakumaru shudder against her as her hot breath caressed his skin. “Is dancing the only thing he gets jealous about?” he croaked, staring at her with obvious desire, hands impotently grasping at empty air as she stepped out of his reach. “Perhaps we could find a nice, quiet corner and continue our discussion about your modeling career; a beauty like you deserves to be shared, not hoarded away for one man to enjoy.”
Relieved that she could finally turn around and roll her eyes, she strolled towards the wine fountain, calling back over her shoulder, “I appreciate the thought, but I really must get back to Adrian.”
She halted as a thin, sweaty hand wrapped around her wrist. “At a party like this, a man’s never lonely for long. I’m sure he’s found some pretty young thing to keep him company, so why not do the same for me?”
Lifting up her free arm, she allowed the cold metal of the stolen watch to slide down her sleeve into her bodice, grateful that he’d grabbed her left wrist. It would have been disastrous if he’d stumbled upon the payment she’d taken for putting up with his bullshit. Absently, she played with the shimmering barrettes in her hair, making sure they caught the light like an emergency beacon. Surely Law would be there any moment; this was definitely serious enough to get him involved. “Adrian’s quite adamant that I’m the only woman for him, so I doubt it. And if a man’s not lonely for long, I’m sure you’ll find yourself in pleasant enough company soon enough.”
“I want your company. Your little boyfriend can wait until I’m finished with you.”
“He’s hardly ‘little.’”
“He must be if he can’t satisfy a woman as obsessed with ‘dancing’ as you. In fact, how about I invite a few friends to join us?’ You said he doesn’t care how many ‘dance partners’ you have, right?”
Brown eyes darted about nervously, desperately trying to catch sight of her raven companion. She was certain she’d left him by the window next to the fountain, so he should have been at her side already. What, had he wandered off to take a leak? If he didn’t show himself in the next five seconds, she was going to have to do something drastic, like pluck the peacock’s feathers herself.
“What was that you were saying about him not looking at other women?” Kujakumaru crowed, roughly turning her towards the dancefloor.
Her jaw dropped. His height made him easy to spot on the dancefloor, casually leading Black Cage Hina in a foxtrot.
That absolute bastard! Nami thought, rage bubbling up inside of her. He abandoned his partner to deal with some clingy creep so he could dance with a Marine? Was he trying to get them caught?!
“Well, since your boyfriend is otherwise occupied,” the man beside her sniggered, pulling her against him, “what say you and I go someplace private—”
The hard point of a cane slammed into his foot, causing him to yelp ungracefully and release Nami from his clutches. Gratefully, she turned to her liberator, hoping Law had abandoned Hina to finally come save her, only to find herself face-to-face with a rotund, yet rather elegant-looking gentleman dressed as a knight, complete with silver shoulder pads, royal blue cape, and plumed helmet. The faceplate was up to reveal piercing black eyes and a disapproving frown made even more exaggerated by his bushy grey mustache.
“I believe this young lady made it quite clear that your time with her is over, nephew,” he said sternly.
Kujakumaru looked like he wanted to argue, but when he reached for Nami again, the knight brandished his cane like a sword. “Oh, please, do try. Beatrix may spoil you rotten, but I’m certainly not above turning you over my knee right here and now.”
That threat was all it took to send the peacock flying off into the crowd, managing nothing more than, “I’m telling mother!” over his shoulder before he disappeared.
Relieved to finally be free of such sweaty clutches, the Cat Thief studied her wrist to ensure no perspiration had leaked into the luxurious fabric of her sleeve. A handkerchief entered her field of vision, and she smiled thankfully.
“So, did you pick your costume intending to go about rescuing young ladies, or was that just a happy accident?” she asked, wiping off her hand.
He savior’s hard frown morphed into a smile as he offered her his arm. “I had hoped such services would be unnecessary, but it never hurts to come prepared, especially with my family is involved. He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
She allowed him to lead her away from the whispering crowd. If she gathered too much attention, it’d be harder for her to sneak away once the plan was in motion, and until Law finished his little dance with Hina, she’d rather not risk being confronted by more creeps who couldn’t take a hint.
Her natural suspicion only briefly entertained the thought that her hero could turn out to be just as bad. Whether it was his protective aura or his mustache, he reminded her of Genzo, and that would always earn a man the benefit of the doubt. “I’m fine. I suppose I should have been clearer that I wasn’t interested.”
“From what I overheard, you made yourself plenty clear,” he huffed. “That boy’s never learned a speck of respect. My sister spoils him, and he takes entirely too much after my brother.”
“Eh, men like him are hardly rare. I appreciate you scaring him off, though.”
“Happy to be of assistance. I hope you don’t mind if I linger a bit? I’d rather avoid the inevitable argument Beatrix and I will have for a little while longer, and I think I should have a talk with your boyfriend about leaving his lady undefended.”
“Oh, no need for that,” she growled, clenching her fist as a murderous flame crackled in her eyes. “I’m happy to do it myself.”
Surprised, the knight let out a full-bellied laugh. “I’m starting to think my rescue was unneeded; you seem plenty capable of handling yourself!”
“Damn right I can!” she snarled before remembering herself. Swiftly plastering on an innocent smile, she amended, “I mean, I wish I could, but a delicate thing like me wouldn’t stand a chance without a big, strong man looking after her.”
Laugh simmering down to a chuckle, he waved off her excuse. “Relax; a lady with spirit is a great thing. You remind me of my granddaughter, actually!” With a deep, proper bow, he introduced himself. “Harpin Reginald, at your service.”
“Harpin?” she asked, suddenly nervous. “Are you related to our host?” If he was, she was in so much trouble. Puzzle pieces began to connect in her head, and the picture they were forming was not pretty.
His massive mustache waggled side-to-side in distaste. “Alas, he’s my elder brother. I don’t particularly like either of my siblings, but our mother asked us on her deathbed to try to get along, so he’s bound to invite me, and I’m obligated to attend. The rest of the time, I put as much of the Grand Line between the three of us as possible.”
“So, was that the Baron’s son?”
“No, my sister’s, though Gerald was the one to teach him such wonderful manners.” He glared disdainfully across the room to where their host was casually groping one of the maids. “I swear, he threw a masked ball simply because he knows how much I detest these things.”
“What, you don’t enjoy the opportunity to dress up as a white knight?” she managed to tease. Her heart was still quaking at the revelation that she’d inadvertently pissed off a former Navy Intelligence officer’s nephew—when she found Law, she’d have to warn him that she’d earned some problematic attention.
After she kicked his ass for abandoning her, of course.
Whether her was ignoring her nervousness or simply failed to pick up on it, Reginald chuckled at her comment. “Well, that I don’t mind, but you’ve seen how outrageous these people get when they have anonymity—Kujakumaru is a perfect example. I doubt you’re the first woman he’s tried to coerce tonight.”
“You have a point, but I’m starting to think every high-class party is a masquerade in its own way.”
A grey eyebrow raised inquisitively. “How so?”
She shrugged, adjusting her cat mask so it rested more securely on her face. “Everyone’s still putting on a disguise; pretending to be more important than they really are, acting like they don’t despise each other with fake smiles and forced politeness, putting up with some creep’s innuendos because if they slap him like they really want to, the illusion’s broken and everyone will hate them for it.”
Reginald rubbed his chin, but a small, approving smile curled his lips. “You sound like you don’t enjoy these kinds of affairs.”
“Honestly, I always thought I would, but I guess I’m a simple girl at heart. I like expensive things, but this,” she pointed at the ballroom, “is disgusting. How much of the buffet is going to go straight in the trash? My friend’s a cook, and he’d have an aneurism over so much food waste.”
“I agree. I wish Gerald would at least send the leftovers to the town; every year, I swear those people look worse and worse. I tell you, I’d much rather be at one of the shindigs my wife’s family throws. Everyone comes for miles to sing and dance and share food, and it doesn’t matter what your status is; you’re welcomed with open arms.”
Nami smiled wistfully. “Yeah. I wish I was back with my friends—Brook’s music is way better than some stuffy orchestra, and Franky would show off some bizarre new move or hairstyle, and Lu—” she caught herself, realizing that she was getting too close to outing her identity as a Straw Hat, “—cy would make up ridiculous games and do stupid impressions, and we’d drink and laugh until dawn.”
“That sounds a hundred times more fun than any affair my siblings have thrown. Perhaps next year I’ll claim to have a prior engagement and seek out your friends’ party,” he joked.
She grinned, elbowing him playfully. “If you can find us, you’re welcome anytime. Heck, you can even say we kidnapped you if you need a better excuse. Consider it my thanks for the daring rescue.”
The playful glint faded from his black eyes. “Speaking of excuses, you’ll probably want to come up with one to leave—even if Kujakumaru doesn’t go crying to his mother, by midnight, this place will be nothing short of an orgy.”
She nearly choked on her own spit. From his dry tone, she doubted he was exaggerating. “Good thing my boyfriend and I already planned to be out by then.”
“See that you do. Why the Navy ever employed a hedonist like my brother, I’ll never know, much less as head of Intelligence.”
From what she’d seen that night, she couldn’t help but wonder the same thing. “Well, you don’t get rich enough to own your own island by not having connections; maybe the Navy felt they were useful enough to excuse his…lifestyle.”
With a huff, he nodded. “Probably, though I also have no doubt that’s why he was eventually convinced to ‘retire.’ He never would have left on his own volition; they would have had to pry it from his sticky, greedy grasp. Gerald’s always hated giving anything up, even if he doesn’t really want it.”
Nami wanted to pry further—this was a goldmine of intel on the man she was about to rob—but she was distracted by a certain man in a raven mask approaching.
Rage once more bubbling up like a geyser, she whirled on Law. “Oh, have you finished dancing already?” she asked sarcastically. “Good thing I didn’t need your help fending off some creep!”
Behind the mask, she could see an array of expressions cross his face; surprise, annoyance, guilt, anger, before finally settling on mildly apologetic. “I’m sorry, sweetheart,” he said, reaching out to gently run his fingers across her cheek. When she jerked back, glaring harshly, he sighed, “I saw another lady in need of rescuing and got distracted.”
“Yeah, sure, because Black Cage Hina would ever need to be rescued,” she scoffed.
“Actually,” Reginald said from beside her, “if it’s from my brother, then yes, she would. He’s always had a…thing for her, ever since she was a recruit.”
Law nodded, though he did give the older man a suspicious glance. “I was simply helping her avoid the Baron. But I truly am sorry,” he murmured, hooking Nami’s fingers with his own and carefully drawing her to his side, brushing a kiss across the corner of her mask. “I should have made sure you weren’t in harm’s way, first; you’re always my top priority, and I promise not to leave you alone again.”
Nami really wanted to stay mad at him, but for the sake of both their cover and the job, Bellemere had to forgive her boyfriend’s chivalrous stupidity. The Cat Thief didn’t, though, and she vowed to give him an earful once they were alone. So, she forced herself to wrap her arms around his waist, giving him a tight squeeze as she grumbled into his vest, “Apology accepted, but only because I was lucky enough to have a knight in shining armor to rescue me.”
“I guess so. Care to introduce me?”
Gratefully pulling away from Law’s heated body, she turned to her new friend. “Adrian, this is Harpin Reginald. Reginald, this is Dr. Goodheart Adrian.”
“Goodheart?” the old gentleman asked, eyes lighting up in recognition. “From Serenity Hospital?”
“Yes?” the surgeon replied, immediately on guard. He’d made the connection to their host even more quickly than she had, and the fact that her new friend could identify him didn’t bode well.
“You were the one who reattached my granddaughter’s leg!”
Law blinked in surprise. “Melody-ya was your granddaughter?”
Nami’s eyes widened at both the connection and the way the surgeon’s accent slipped. Even when it was just the two of them, he hadn’t added -ya to anyone’s name since they’d arrived.
Grasping Law’s hand in both of his own, Reginald shook it enthusiastically, tears of joy practically streaming down his face. “Indeed! I honestly can’t thank you enough!” He turned to Nami, smile shining brighter than his armor. “You have no idea how much I owe this man. Melody was involved in a terrible accident that tore off her right leg. The doctors were able to stabilize her, but they said she’d need a prosthetic replacement, and possibly never be able to walk again. But Dr. Goodheart was able to reattach her leg so perfectly, there wasn’t even a scar when they removed her stitches! It was practically a miracle!”
If you count the powers of a Devil Fruit as a “miracle,” she thought wryly, though she found it hard to stay cynical. As unlikely as it seemed that Law would meet the grandfather of one of his former patients here, she’d learned that fate had a funny way of bringing people together. She’d never expected to meet Brook, Laboon’s long-missing friend, on Thriller Bark, and yet he was now a member of her crew, sailing with them to the end of the Grand Line to fulfill his promise.
“I simply did what I could to the best of my ability with the tools I had at my disposal,” Law insisted, though his lips did lift in a slight smile. It was strange to see him acting humble, and somehow, it felt authentic. “How has she been? Any problems with the leg?”
“She’s well on her way to becoming a marathon runner, I can tell you,” Reginald said proudly. “Quick as the wind and eager to see the world! And it’s all thanks to you!”
“Any surgeon would have done the same in my position. I’m just glad she’s made such an excellent recovery; it’s the greatest reward any doctor could ask for.”
Reginald looked like he wanted to sing “Dr. Goodheart’s” praises further, but there was a sudden screech of “WHERE’S THAT WORTHLESS LITTLE BROTHER OF MINE” from the other side of the room, and the knight went rigid.
“Ah, it seems I can’t delay my argument with Beatrix any longer. Keep your heads down while I try to lead her off. Better yet, hide until some other drama occurs—maybe then you could sneak out more easily.”
Law frowned while Nami gave an appreciative smile. She was more than happy to run rather than get pulled into some family spat. “Thanks again for your help, Reginald. Best of luck with your sister.”
Pulling her partner deep into the crowd, the thief refused to stop until they were safe at the far end of the ballroom, the sound of the orchestra covering up their conversation.
“So, exactly what kind of trouble did you get yourself into while I was gone?” Law asked.
“Long story short—the Baron’s nephew propositioned me and wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, so Reginald put him in his place.”
Anger flashed in the Dark Doctor’s gaze before simmering down to annoyance. “Of all the people you had to piss off…”
“Well excuse me for being a loyal girlfriend,” she snapped. “Unlike you! Why were you really dancing with Hina?” she whispered harshly, poking his chest.
He raised a black eyebrow, and Nami blushed as she realized just how jealous she sounded. “You’re the one who thinks acts of kindness are a weakness,” she insisted, “so there’s no way you helped her out for chivalry’s sake. If it affects the plan, I deserve to know!”
“White Chase had to take a piss, and I noticed our beloved host making a bee-line for her. In the interest of the night not suddenly going to hell ahead of schedule, I figured I’d offer her a temporary escape. Entertaining as it would be, my plan doesn’t factor in the Baron getting murdered this early in the evening.”
“What if she had recognized you?”
“Worried about me, sweetheart?” he teased, stroking a gloved finger down the smooth side of her mask. “I’m sure you’d be able to make an easy getaway in the confusion.”
“If anything happened to you, your crew would be heartbroken and I’d be roped into breaking your ass out of Impel Down,” she argued half-heartedly. “And in case you haven’t noticed, I’m not some powerhouse with more luck than brains like Luffy. You shouldn’t have taken such a risk!”
“Then I promise not to dance with another woman for the rest of the night,” he replied, pulling her close, hands resting gently on the small of her back, rubbing those distracting little circles along her spine. Leaning down, he whispered, “Seriously, I was doing it for our sake; Black Cage apparently has a rather unpleasant history with Harpin, so I dropped a few hints that she and White Chase should call it an early night. Things will go much easier with them out of the way.”
It was funny; despite the knowledge that Law was a sadistic, dangerous pirate and potentially one of Luffy’s greatest rivals to become Pirate King, being in his arms was beginning to feel…not comfortable, but almost normal. If anything, she should be more eager to escape his clutches than any of the handsy men she’d endured that night; at least they were weak enough to clobber if they got her alone. But she didn’t feel gross when Law touched her.
It dawned on her that, despite playing the role of her lover, his touches throughout the night had been relatively innocent. His hand went nowhere more inappropriate than her waist. His eyes stayed locked on her own instead of falling to the plunging neckline of her dress. Even though he’d kissed her several times, for the most part it had been to her wig or mask.
Deep down, she’d expected him to take advantage of their situation; to grope and kiss and tease her, using their cover as a couple as an excuse, secure in the knowledge that there was nothing she could do to stop him.
Why the hell did Nami feel so disappointed that he didn’t?
Shaking herself free of such confusing thoughts, she replied, “How much longer until phase two?”
Taking a glance at his pocket watch, he said, “It’s currently 9:40pm. Shachi’s team will act at 10:25pm, Ikkaku’s at 10:31pm, and Penguin’s at 10:37pm. Be ready to move no later than 10:15pm.”
“So we’ll just waltz into Harpin’s study?” She’d been sure to memorize the mansion’s blueprints, so she knew it was three floors above the ballroom. No matter what route they took, getting there would take time, and Law seemed fairly against using his powers unless strictly necessary.
“When we leave the ballroom, head towards the foyer but take the first right; about fifteen feet down that hallway, behind the red drapes between the painting of Dionysus and the statue of Venus is a hidden door the servants use. Those passageways lead all throughout the house, so we should be able to get around more easily. I’m sure there are guards or at least servants positioned to deter guests from wandering into certain parts of the mansion, but once our little distractions hit, it’s unlikely to be a problem.”
Even with his reassurance, Nami couldn’t help but be nervous. So many things could go horribly wrong, and even if Smoker and Hina left, she doubted they’d ignore the “distractions” Law had in mind.
Either he could see the tension in her shoulders or feel it in her spine, because he immediately set to taking her mind off such concerns. “We still have over a half-hour; I bet you can’t steal ten more wallets before showtime.”
Eyes flashing with greed and pride, she replied, “What’s the prize?”
“Me and the crew always have a party to celebrate a successful job, but I also take the time to treat myself to a nice dinner as a personal reward. Since you’ve been so instrumental to my plan, I was thinking about inviting you along.”
Immediately, she knew what he was proposing. “Loser pays for dinner?”
“Damn right.”
“You’re on.”
To the Dark Doctor’s surprise, she didn’t run off to find a new dance partner; instead, they milled about, wandering past small groups of guests, Nami occasionally stopping to apologize for bumping into someone or to compliment a particularly elaborate costume. By the time they reached the other side of the ballroom ten minutes later, she pulled him towards one of the stained-glass windows, turning them away from the party under the pretense of studying the elaborate scene of a satyr ravishing a forest nymph.
Reaching into the slit of her dress, the Cat Thief pulled out her haul, fanning herself haughtily with the wallets. “Seven down; three to go.”
Impressed at how quickly and subtly she worked, he smirked, patting his pocket to be sure she hadn’t added his to the collection. “Saying this now; my wallet doesn’t count.”
She rolled her eyes in mock exasperation. “Fine, but only because I already know how easily I could take it.”
“Careful, Nami-ya, or you’re going to find out how easily I can take everything you’ve stolen tonight.”
A strange, pleasant shiver ran up her spine as his dark baritone caressed each syllable of her name. Had he always said it like that? Or was she just noticing now because he’d been calling her “Bellemere” and “sweetheart” all night?
None of that mattered at the moment, as a shrill, angry shriek from behind them quickly soured the mood.
“You! You’re the wretch who insulted my precious Kujakumaru!”
Nami barely had time to slip the wallets back into her gown before five long, sharp, acrylic nails buried themselves into her clavicle. She let out a yelp of pain as she was aggressively spun around, coming face-to-throat with a tall, thin woman with a severe frown, red cheeks, and the same black, watery eyes as the Baron. She was dressed in a chartreuse silk gown, her hair done up in a tight updo, and she clutched a domino mask adorned with yellow and green sequins. But Nami barely noticed that, as her eye was immediately drawn to her necklace; three rows of small, exquisitely cut white diamonds hung around her neck like a collar, framing a heart-shaped yellow diamond the size of a peach stone.
The sharp sting of yellow-painted talons scratching the skin of her collarbone brought the thief’s attention back up to the woman’s face. “I’m sorry; I don’t think we’ve been introduced,” Nami ground out through the pain.
“That’s because trash like you doesn’t even belong in my presence! You should be honored my perfect son even glanced your way you harlot!” Looking the younger woman up and down, she scoffed. “I mean, look at the way you’re dressed. Kujakumaru, did you ask this girl to dance out of pity? Such cheap, ugly jewelry for a cheap, ugly girl!”
“Yes mother,” the man in the peacock mask sneered, pushing his way to the front of the crowd, a look of righteous glee in his eyes. “It was an act of charity, and when I refused her advances, she made uncle Reggie beat me!”
Furious at both the insult and the blatant lies, Nami struggled to pull away, but that only made the claws sink in deeper. “Your son’s the one who came onto me,” she snapped, “and maybe if you’d bothered to teach him to respect women, he wouldn’t get so butthurt over a girl rejecting him.”
“How dare you?!”
The woman looked as if she might continue to berate her, but she shrieked in surprise as Law wrenched her hand from Nami’s shoulder, his large fist clenched around her scrawny wrist so tightly she could hear the leather creak. Or maybe it was the bones.
“Lady Beatrix, I presume?” the Surgeon of Death asked, voice cold as chipped ice as he glared with murderous intent. “Regardless of however your son was insulted, I’d appreciate it if you kept your damn hands off my woman.”
As the Baron’s sister trembled under Law’s scrutiny, Nami inspected her shoulder, dismayed to find that the psychotic bitch had drawn blood. No wonder he’d stepped in; regardless of whether or not the Cat Thief could handle herself, he’d paid for her dress, and it already stood to get ruined. Bloodstains were not easy to get out of gold satin, after all.
“U-unhand me, you brute!” Beatrix screeched, writhing about like an eel. “My brother—”
“—would only care if I got your blood on his million-belli carpet. If he actually did give a shit about you or your worthless son, he’d be confronting me himself.” With predatory intent, Law’s eyes swept over the small crowd that had gathered, landing squarely on the man in the peacock mask. “Speaking of, I’m not exactly pleased that he propositioned my lover. She did tell you she was already spoken for, right?”
Smug triumph melted off his face like candle wax, and Kujakumaru looked ready to piss himself. “Sh-she said you had an arrangement! That you didn’t mind her having as many partners as she wanted!”
“Dance partners!” Nami insisted, frowning at Law’s raised eyebrow. “I specifically said ‘dance partners;’ he’s the idiot who took it the wrong way!”
Nodding in understanding, he turned back to the trembling man. “Even if I was the type to share, a lady has every right to refuse a man’s advances. Either you don’t know how to handle rejection, or you’re so pathetic that you couldn’t even pay a woman to sleep with you. I’d put my money on the latter.”
Nami shrieked as Beatrix’s claw-like free hand lashed out at him, but Law managed to catch it mere inches from his face, his cane dropping to the floor with a dull thud. The look in his eye turned sadistically amused at the attempted assault, and Nami had the feeling that if she didn’t put an end to this now, their cover would be blown as the Surgeon of Death decided to find out if the mother and son really did have blue blood.
Grabbing his arm, she yanked as hard as she could, forcing him to release Beatrix’s left wrist. “Darling, that’s enough!” she insisted. “It’s not worth it!”
“I’ll be the judge of that,” he replied calmly, thought the dark aura failed to dissipate.
More people were gathering to watch, and Nami knew she needed to do something drastic before they managed to catch the Baron’s, or even Smoker and Hina’s, attention. Grabbing his chin, she yanked his face down to her level, cutting off his protests with a desperate kiss.
Law’s lips were softer than she’d expected. Life on the sea was rough, the salty air and burning sun resulting in chapped lips for almost everyone, but perhaps he was one of the few men smart enough to use lip balm. On top of that, they were dry and warm, the smooth skin pliant beneath her own. The man himself didn’t move for a moment, completely caught off-guard by her actions, but after a few agonizing seconds, he tilted his head to better slant his mouth over hers.
It was clear her plan worked when she felt both his hands cup her shoulders, and the harsh click of Beatrix’s heels as she scurried away, not wasting the opportunity to put some distance between herself and the man who dared threaten her.
Part of Nami was tempted to drag the kiss out, especially when she felt Law’s blunt teeth nibble at her bottom lip, requesting entrance. Heat pooled in her belly as his tongue swept over the seam of her mouth, but the sound of the clock striking ten doused it in ice water as she remembered they didn’t have time to waste.
Drawing on every shred of acting ability in her repertoire, she forced tears to well up in her eyes as she shoved him away. “I thought you were different, Adrian!” she sobbed. “You know how much I hate violence!”
“Wha—”
“I can’t believe you’d even consider harming someone, especially a defenseless old woman! I—I never should have come out tonight. I wish we had just stayed home!”
Tears streaming out of her eyes, she gathered up her skirts and sprinted away, weaving through the crowds, effortlessly dodging the concerned hands that reached out for her. Behind her, she heard another shriek, followed by exclamations of “Fire! Put that curtain out you fools!” and in the chaos, she managed to escape into the hall, guests and servants alike paying her no mind in favor of the ruckus that broke out. Nami chanced a glance over her shoulder, bright eyes widening as she saw not one, but at least four fires of varying sizes had sprung up throughout the ballroom, candelabras apparently having been knocked over by the panicked guests.
Not one to look the gift horse in the mouth, she dashed into to the hallway Law had spoken of, eyes quickly locking onto the curtain hiding the servant’s entrance. Hopefully, she’d be able to hide in there and wait for her companion. Not that she was particularly looking forward to being alone with him now; god, what had she been thinking, pulling him into a kiss? A slap would have been better, or maybe a swift kick to the shin!
Hand trembling with fear and adrenaline, she grabbed the corner of the drape, only to be halted by an arm coming out of nowhere to wrap tightly around her waist. Another hand clamped over her mouth, cutting off her startled scream.
“You didn’t think you’d escape me that easily, did you?” came a dark voice at her ear.

How Sitting All Day Is Killing You
Living a sedentary life can be very dangerous to your health. Experts claim that “sitting is the new smoking”. Studies have shown that the more you sit through the day, the higher the chances of dying younger. If you live a sedentary lifestyle, you have a higher chance of being overweight, developing type 2 diabetes, cancer or heart disease, and experiencing depression and anxiety.
And the bad news doesn’t stop here. Continue reading to see all the negative effects that sitting has on your life.
Heart Disease
Sitting for too long has also been linked to heart disease. Experts claim that people who are inactive and sit for many hours have a 147 percent higher risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. A study found that men who watch television for 23 hours or more each week have a 64% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compare to men who watch only 11 hours of tv each week.
Cancer
New studies show that people who sit for a long period of time have a 40% higher chance to develop some types of cancer. The most common are lung, uterine and colon cancers. The reasons for this are yet unknown.
Legs and Gluteals
Sitting at your desk for too long can lead to weakening and wasting away of the large leg and gluteal muscles, which are important for walking and for stabilizing you. If these muscles are weak you are more likely to injure yourself from falls, and strains when you do exercise.
Weight
When moving, you engage your muscles which in turn helps your body digest the fats and sugars you eat. By spending a lot of time sitting, your digestion is not as efficient and so you retain those fats and sugars as fat in your body. Excessive sitting and lack of exercise is a sure way of putting on a lot of weight in a short amount of time.
Trying to compensate for the large amount of time spent sitting with intense exercising can still lead to health problems, like metabolic syndrome. The solution, new research suggests, in 60 to 75 minutes of moderate-intensity activity performed daily.
Hips and Back
Your legs and gluteal won’t be the only ones affected by the long periods of sitting at your desk. Your hip flexor muscle, when not used, tends to shorten, leading to problems for your hip joints. Your back is also affected, especially if during the sitting period you have a poor posture. This can lead to compression in the discs, which in time will become painful and will eventually lead to surgery.
Stiff Neck
Probably the least harmful effect of sitting for long periods, especially hunched over in front of a computer, is stiffness in the neck and shoulders.
Depression
Sitting for a long period is also bad for your mental health. A study of nearly 9,000 women in their fifties found that those who sat for long periods were three times as likely to have symptoms of depression than individuals with a more active lifestyle and who spent less than 4 hours sitting at their desks. Unfortunately, depression seems to be a two-way street: While depressed, you feel like you don’t have the energy to do any exercise, while at the same time sitting just gets you into a deeper state of depression.
Recently, it has been discovered that too much sitting can cause depression even amongst teens.
Anxiety
Although scientists don’t know exactly why, sitting for a long time, especially in front of a computer screen, can lead to anxiety. It might be because you become used to working alone, without human interaction and you distance yourself from friends and family, which is linked to social anxiety. Staring into a computer screen for too long can disrupt your sleep, which also leads to anxiety.
Varicose Veins
Prolonged sitting can also lead to spider veins or varicose veins. This can happen because sitting causes your blood to pool into your legs. While varicose veins aren’t as dangerous as other problems listed above, in some cases they can lead to blood clots and thus other serious problems.
Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that has formed into the veins of your log due to long periods of sitting. A blood clot can break off the vein at any time and travel to other parts of your body, cutting off the blood flow. If, for example, blood circulation is cut off from your lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism. This, in turn, leads to major complications or, in worst cases, even death.
Conclusion
Many of our jobs have become more sedentary, with long periods sitting at our desk, hunched over our keyboard. This is leading to more and more people having serious health issues, like the ones mentioned above. It’s enough to sit for 8 hours a day, including the time spent in your car or at home on your couch, to significantly increase your chances of developing dangerous health issues.
The best and easiest way to start spending less time sitting is to switch to a standing desk. It can easily help you start spending more time on your feet and less on your ass while you are working, either at home or the office. You have a lot of options to choose from, so you can start living a healthier lifestyle with a minimum investment.
While a standing desk is a good way to start, you should also find more ways to be more active throughout the day. For example, you can walk or cycle to and from work or start using the stairs instead of the elevator. You could also get off the bus one stop early and walk the rest of the way, or park your car further from your office. Anything you can do to reduce your sedentary behavior is going to have a huge impact on your health.
