⚗️ 07.02.2024 [😴] // Still really tired but I managed to :
go to my 2 hours history of the pharmacy lecture in the morning (it was about the alchemy and Paracelse! Really cool even if strange)
go to my bf's lectures I really really wanted to study but wasn't accepted into for administrative reasons (still we were 10 to attend the lecture, nice) in the afternoon. It was mostly interesting as it is genetic bioinformatics but I'll be honest I was bored at the end ahah
forgot to take pictures of any of my notes. I find it a bit embarrassing to take pictures of what I'm writing for 5 hours in front of people so I often forget to do it :((
Then I went home and did my "bullet journal" all the evening (it's really just me writing stuff and counting my sleep hours ahahaha)

Meet Flor Cobar, pharmaceutical chemist and drug development scientist
1)  What do you do?
I am currently an MSc student in Pharmaceutical Modelling. I apply my theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced modelling techniques including computational chemistry, modelling of clinical and preclinical data, machine learning, bioinformatics and programming skills to various disciplines of drug discovery, development, and usage.
2)  Where do you work?
I am currently doing my degree project in the field of computational medicinal chemistry at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Drug Design and Development at Uppsala University in Sweden.
3)  Tell us about the photos! [Left:] A photo from my visit to Stockholm
[Right:] In the picture, I was mapping potential binding sites of MMP13 (matrix metalloproteinase 13) enzyme to evaluate druggability. It’s a small part of my project which is about optimization and evaluation of virtual screening protocols.
4)  Tell us about your academic career path so far.
I finished BS Pharmacy in CEU Manila and continued to obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy in CEU Makati. Immediately after I finished PharmD, I taught in CEU Manila and Makati for 2 years. I applied for a scholarship in Uppsala University and I was awarded with IPK Uppsala University Scholarship.
5) Anything else you’d like to share
In silico (or performed in computer or via computer simulation) methodologies in the field of pharmaceutical sciences has not been accepted or practiced yet in the Philippines (to my knowledge). These techniques will help us make smart decisions of identifying compounds/molecules that are needed to be prioritized and tested, thus saving a lot of time and money in drug discovery and development. As an academician and a researcher, I hope that in silico methods will be practiced in pharmaceutical research in the Philippines as it is becoming the norm in EU, USA and in Japan.

Debating on career choices
Hey everyone! I just graduated college back in December 2019 with a bachelors in biomedical sciences. Now I know this degree is used for further education and doesn’t really get you a good job right out of school (correct me if I’m wrong). I realized that PA school or pharmacy school was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I’ve been debating whether to do a masters degree in bioinformatics or get a degree becoming a dental hygienist. Any thoughts?

From Health Consumers to Health Citizens – a U.S. Patient Rights Moonshot?
Issue No. 4 of StartUp Health Magazine is dedicated to 8 Health Moonshot Principles. StartUp Health sees these moonshots taken together as, “a blueprint for achieving the impossible.”
There’s an aspect of U.S. health care that currently feels impossible to achieve, and that’s consensus on what would constitute a sound approach to covering all Americans for health care as a civil right and whether the nation can “afford” doing so.
On pages 22-23 of the digital magazine, you’ll find my essay, “From Health Consumers to Health Citizens.” This write-up summarizes the plotline of my book titled HealthConsuming, which features that six-word tagline. My StartUp Health piece tells my personal story about taking an oath to become a citizen of Italy, a member-state of the European Union. By becoming a citizen of Italy, I became at once a citizen of the EU with all rights and responsibilities to the region.
Two key rights that immediately flowed to me were becoming a health citizen of the EU, and obtaining the “right to being forgot” under the GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation.
The GDPR goes well beyond HIPAA in covering not only my personal health care data generated in hospitals, doctors’ offices and pharmacy, but all of my personal data. GDPR operates on an opt-in principle, versus HIPAA’s opt-out approach.
I learned about the concept of “health citizens” when I worked in Europe beginning in the late 1980s, as the European “area” began to morph into the larger vision of a Union. Jean Claude Healy working in the European Commission back then spoke and wrote about the emergence of e-Health and the evolution of European patients as health citizens. Healy connected the dots for me between bioinformatics to health citizenship.
Healy was the first to plant this seed in my thinking about patients having civil rights for health access, underpinned by digital technology. It was early days — America Online, CompuServe and Prodigy were walled gardens, and by the time I returned to the U.S. from working in London I had begun to explore patient list-servs like Gilles Frydman’s cancer community and Jack Barrette’s work building Yahoo! Health groups.
All these years later, I don’t have to pay for three separate subscriptions for internet access as the Internet is open, and I can afford to pay for a data plan. Not all patients can, nor do all Americans have access to broadband in their communities in a time when connectivity is truly a social determinant of health.
All these years later, my health and personal data are digitized, and likely to be breached in some way, sooner rather than later. And HIPAA, to me, is more part of a patchwork quilt than a more protective GDPR.
We seem to “rent” our health and health care system versus own it, quoting Esther Dyson from an email communication I received a couple of years ago. My moonshot for the possible is for the U.S. to forge a system that bolsters health equity, outcomes, empowerment, and indeed, personal and community health ownership.
Health Populi’s Hot Points:  After you review the piece, please let me know what you think and whether you believe health care is a civil right in the U.S. What do you think the prospects are for Americans to join the world in achieving a uniquely American flavor of universal health care as other developed countries do the world over, who are shown in the check-mark graphic here?

What will happen after the 12th - Great question for students
Tumblr media
Choosing a good career option is the most important decision in someone's life. After 12th class, each student must go through a phase in which he must decide what to choose as a career. In general, they ask themselves questions as if I want to be a doctor, but I do not think there's a lot of room for that, I do not want to become an engineer because I'm weak in math, and so on.
In addition, the choice of career depends on the job prospects of the field and, of course, the interest of the candidate. Some prefer the flow; some think of the interest, while others obey their parents.
Options such as medicine and engineering have always been at the forefront in choosing a career but, at present, societal trends have changed and disciplines such as administration, accounting and others are also in great demand. This lessens our difficulty in choosing one or sometimes adds to chaos.
After the 12th, career counseling is the best way to go for a career-oriented course or a university course, every career prospect is good in its own way. Students can be confused with so many options available today. As a result, they even receive the career assessment test that offers them the best career options.
In addition, speaking of students who have completed their twelfth group of PCM may choose engineering and medicine as a career, while once with non-medical subjects (Science-PCM) may choose BCA, Aviation, Defense Services , IT, Banking, Law, Hospitality, Management, Mass Communication, Journalism and many others.
In addition to all the above options, now a day opting for journalism as a career has become a trend for every student. Its goal is to provide a plethora of opportunities for beginners in the near future.
In addition, there are several training institutes and universities that offer degrees and diplomas in these courses after the 12th all over the world. Students can choose one of the fields based on their area of interest and establish a solid foundation for their career.
Here, the author explains about vocational guidance, training institutes and universities. For more details, visit the free classifieds.

Graduate Studies
I have expectations going into my graduate studies. Without a doubt, there are new obstacles I am anticipating and unfamiliar challenges I hope to conquer. There are also new forms of evaluation and new material to comprehend. In my undergraduate studies, I have become bored by the trivial course design: assignments, midterms, and final exams. By no means have I mastered these components as I am no excellent test-taker or 4.0 GPA student. My skills and abilities have simply grown out of these numerical assessments. I genuinely believe that the continued numerical assessment in this last term of my undergraduate is pointless. I recognize a numerical grade is necessary for grant applications, scholarships, and continued career success. And it for this reason I’ve striven to bring my average up over the past two years.
However, I’ve learned that what makes me the happiest are the opportunities to be challenged by scientific research objectives, rather than numerically assessed tests. The “real world” does not demand students meet their highest GPAs. What I think it demands are well-rounded students that can score decent GPAs, but have extensively explored their non-numerical abilities which includes leadership, teamwork, creativity, and work ethic. I think a “decent” GPA is important because it demonstrates you can pick up theoretical knowledge and self-learn new material. However, the actual application of this knowledge, infused with our unique abilities, can only be tested in non-numerical assessments. Graduate school is no longer about the grades. Of course, grades are still given to the out-dated grant-providing groups like NSERC, but they aren’t the focus anymore. The focus is the research output in the form of papers, and the ability to mentor others. The focus is the development of one’s passion for the sciences and the sharing of this passion. The focus is the personal growth, and the building of one’s career. I find that undergraduate programs like mine barely focused on all of these aspects. The co-operative education program (ie. co-op) was virtually useless in my career development, yet it was suppose to nurture all those aspects; I had to find my own positions that have brought me to where I am now. The Canadian Cancer Society and Environment Canada were merely fillers. As harsh as I am on these experiences, I do recognize their benefits. I needed the former to hone my project management skills; I needed the latter to develop a stronger appreciation for research. I am thankful for these experiences, but in no way did they play a major role in biggest undergraduate milestones.
My final year in undergrad features a selection of courses designed to satisfy my interests in the pharmaceutical sciences. Synthetic biology and protein engineering are my fortes at this point, and it is why I continue to participate in iGEM and take courses like Structural Bioinformatics. I love reading journal articles, and I love designing experiments and writing paper reports based on them. I have endless mental energy for lab work (though my physical energy can only go so far). I love engaging in conversation about the future of health and how synthetic biology may play a role. Among the iGEM leads this year, I don’t think there was anyone as passionate as I was about synthetic biology (and I don’t know why).
In graduate school, I want to have that luxury of focusing one topic and specializing in it. For now, I am tired of taking an arrangement of courses where I have to make them connect to each other. I want to take challenging courses that have obvious connections to each other. I want my main work to be laboratory research, and my courses to supplement them. I want a program where I can pursue my interest and there are resources to empower me. I don’t want funding to be a major problem, and I don’t want to be in a community of dejected graduate students that aren’t involved with non-academic interests. I want to be in a room where there’s at least one student I can eagerly share my scientific passions with. In my undergraduate, I have been, for the most part, surrounded by people who lose interest once I clarify to them that I want to do graduate studies in the form of a Master’s and not a PharmD. I understand why people are so interested in others entering PharmD programs: healthcare, the financial promises, the ability to help others, the professionalism, the socioeconomic boosts this can bring to your family, the recognition, the feeling of awesomeness when you tell others you’re studying pharmacy. Yet, the prospects of this program are so inflated and often superficial. We need innovation in PharmD students, and we need new thinkers. I want to experience first hand what PharmD students are doing, and that is a reason I want to do my Master’s at a pharmacy school. I want to know where the field of pharmaceutical sciences stands, and what role I can play to boost it further so it serves more people in the world.
The most important part of my graduate studies is that it is being done under the supervision of Canada’s Chair in Synthetic Biology and Human Health – Dr. Keith Pardee. I’ve had four different research experiences in my undergrad: two seasons on iGEM, an 8-month co-op position with Dr. David Rose, and an Honours Thesis Project with Dr. Marc Aucoin. In all of these positions, the only supervisor that has sparked new interests is my good friend Peivand from my first ever research position on iGEM. I’ve, in a sense, been deprived of a mentor. I’ve been a mentor to others, but I’ve really wanted my own mentor for a while now. Someone who is interested in synthetic biology and how it interfaces with human health. I also need a mentor that exercises creativity and innovation. In essence, this requires the mentor to be on the younger side and closer to my age. This is quite literally Keith, and I don’t think it’s possible for me to find someone like this so close to home and in such an optimal position.
There have also been a number of personal interests held back by the trivial problems of undergraduate studies. Reading and exercise. This course-based system of study is something I find to be a hindrance to my education, as strange as that is. The average six courses/term in the past few years has arrested all personal growth in non-academic interests. Only recently have I been able to read and to exercise, and this is because I only have 3 lecture courses last term and 4 this term. What I need is one or two courses only that are extremely in-depth and are not based on numerical assessments. Research papers are not graded. Research papers are provided feedback and revisions to allow for improvement up until a point where peer-reviewers think the written piece is as best as it can get (talking about legitimate Journals, not your run-of-the-mill-accept-everything Journals). A pass-or-fail course that teaches me about Canada’s healthcare systems and tests my understanding by having me write papers is a far better use of everyone’s time. With this kind of specialization, I think it will provide me with the luxury to enjoy fiction and maintain my body’s health. I won’t have to worry about stupid assignments and waves of midterms coming up. I can finally enjoy learning to my fullest extent. I can finally feel like I belong to a community of like-minded students interested in an over-arching field. I need this in my life.
