wake up babe new c!benchtrio au just dropped :)

- it’s a hassle to type c! before all names so everything from now on is /rp /dsmp

- reblogs r so incredible and genuinely appreciated!! i’ve been thinking ab this au for months so i rlly hope people like it :’)

- i’ve never come across an au exactly like this, so as far i’m aware it’s new-ish? i promise if you have smth similar it was not intentional at all /g 

- this au includes one character with selective mutism, and one that’s hard of hearing. i am neither of these things! if anything in this is stupid or offensive or just dumb in some way, let me know and i’ll fix it!! /g

speak no evil - tommy - selective mutism 

- after being revived in the prison, tommy became completely mute. it was essentially a psychological survival response. he’d gotten himself in so much trouble through speaking, including starting literal wars and losing friends. so his brain decided it was safer if he didn’t speak at all. 

- but as the next couple months passed in relative peace, it shifted into selective mutism. he’s completely mute around all adults, and when near the prison. selective mutism is primarily anxiety based, which is why he can’t speak around anxiety-evoking people or places (adults and the prison.) he can sometimes talk to other minors, using simple sentences with less words, and often whispering. with tubbo and ranboo, he can usually speak normally. sometimes to feel more at ease, he whispers or keeps sentences simple. and if he’s feeling abnormally anxious, sometimes he won’t speak to anyone at all.

- as long as he’s in a place where he feels safe, he’s always able to talk to animals and plants. he gets along super well with michael, since michael’s also nonverbal. 

- over time, everyone on the server has just gotten better at interpreting what he’s trying to convey. tommy relies primarily on body language, gesturing, being more expressive, and flipping more people off. 

- he also carries a notepad with him, in case he needs to explain or ask something more extensive. for example, he’d be able to draw a specific house and a question mark, in order to have someone tell him what it was called. he could also rip pages out and have someone deliver a message for him

- in addition to body language and the notepad, tubbo is also teaching him very basic sign language in case tommy needs an adult in an emergency, or if he doesn’t have his notepad on him. philza, techno, and wilbur all know basic sign language to some extent. as another way to get people’s attention, he carries a small bell with him.

tubbo - hear no evil - hard of hearing

- after tubbo’s execution, his hearing was almost completely gone from the firework blasts. when people lose one of their lives, they often carry over injuries from whatever caused their death. 

- although originally very severe, his hearing has gotten slightly better over time. he can’t understand people speaking at a normal volume, but can sometimes hear things that are spoken very loudly and clearly. he can also hear super loud noises.

- as with most hearing loss from explosions, high frequency sounds are the most difficult for him to hear. so often he’s able to tell someone is talking, but can’t make any sense of what they’re saying. as if they were mumbling or talking underwater. 

- since he knew how to talk before losing his hearing, he’s able to talk pretty normally, but is often too loud or too quiet. 

- outside of home, he has a hard time taking in information. most people on the server don’t know any sign language, and tubbo’s still trying to get the hang of lip-reading. he primarily gets the gist from people’s body language or context, and then has tommy or ranboo fill him in later. with people that do know sign language, he talks out loud and they respond using sign. this also helps tubbo get better at reading sign, since he’s still relatively new. 

- after tubbo lost his hearing, ranboo and tommy immediately started learning sign language as well. but since it hasn’t been long, they’re still really rough. but they’re determined to get better. tubbo is better than them out of necessities sake, but still isn’t perfect.

- as mentioned before, philza, techno, and wilbur all know sign language to some extent. philza is the best of them, and is practically fluent. he offered to help tubbo and the boys learn, which they all immediately agreed too. 

ranboo - see no evil - ‘blind’

- ranboo keeps his eyes completely covered with fabric bandages, in order to avoid making eye contact with anyone. 

- after he began enderwalking, ranboo became worried that it meant his enderman side was becoming more prominent. because of this, he was also extremely nervous that the enderman instinct to attack those who made eye contact would also come to the surface. he’d always been uncomfortable with eye contact, but he felt like it was getting worse. so in order to be safe and keep the ones he loved safe, he began covering his eyes. 

- he wears the bandages at all times, even alone and while sleeping. he also taught himself to wake up with his eyes closed, just in case the bandages came off in his sleep. 

- his movement is relatively easy within his home, since he eventually got the hang of where everything was. tommy and tubbo also help him out navigation wise. even his particles seem to help slightly, nudging him when he goes in the wrong direction. ranboo also has a black cane with an ender eye on top of it, a gift from tubbo. he uses the cane primarily when outside the house.

- when outside, ranboo always has somebody with him, since he’s yet to completely get the hang of navigating the world without being able to see. most of the other server members are courteous enough to help, but ranboo just feels safer when it’s someone he knows. 

- when in his enderwalk state, he can see perfectly, despite still wearing the bandages. normal ranboo obviously doesn’t know this.

- since he can talk and hear normally, ranboo’s biggest concern is an emergency, since it’d be incredibly difficult for him to navigate a situation where he needs to react quickly without being able to see. 

- he misses being able to see michael and his friends, but he wants to keep them safe more than anything, so it’s worth it. 

- learning sign language is an extremely slow process, since either tommy or tubbo have to actually put ranboo’s hands into the specific positions in order for him to be able to learn them. despite the hassle, ranboo’s still determined to learn. 

- conversation is often a struggle, since ranboo can’t really observe most expressions or somebody’s body language. tommy and tubbo will often fill him in after the conversation, as well as pointing out stuff they think he’d want to know. (ex; “quackity is walking towards us, he looks pissed” or “michael is looking at you, he wants to be picked up.”)

- ranboo was determined to keep doing most of the cooking, so he committed to learning every square inch of the kitchen. even after he started getting back into the swing of things, someone usually sits near him while he cooks, just to be safe. 

- he’s also practicing learning how to recognize letters when they're written on his skin. this gives both tubbo and tommy a way to communicate easily with him. for short sentences or phrases, they’d be able to write it on his arm with their finger. tubbo is practicing this as well, but isn’t as good yet. 

- both tommy and tubbo say their names when starting to talk to ranboo, so he doesn't have to take a moment sorting their voices in his head. tommy usually just whispers his name, and tubbo typically says something along the lines of “ey bossman! tubbo here.” additionally, when starting a conversation with someone outside of the trio, tommy will always have them say their name before talking

communication with the trio

obviously, with the three of them having a lot of communication barriers, it can become complicated when trying to have a conversation. so here’s some examples of what conversations between the different duos might look like.

tommy + ranboo

- when tommy is verbal, they have the easiest communication compared to other duos. both of them are able to just talk out loud to each other.

- when tommy is nonverbal, it's a little more complicated. he’ll tap ranboo three times on the arm to indicate that he’s non verbal. ranboo would still be able to talk normally. one option for tommy would be writing on ranboo’s arm in order to respond. it’s difficult for longer conversations, and ranboo is still practicing recognizing the letters. alternatively, tommy can write down his response and have tubbo read it out loud.

tommy + tubbo

- with tommy and tubbo, it doesn’t matter if tommy’s verbal or non verbal, since tubbo wouldn’t be able to hear him either way.

- typically, the easiest option for the two of them consists of tommy writing things down, and tubbo responding out loud. if it’s a simple conversation, tommy’s also able to practice his sign language, and tubbo can either sign back or respond out loud. lastly, tommy can try writing what he has to say on tubbo’s arm, like he does with ranboo.

tubbo + ranboo

- tubbo will usually voice his name or a greeting to let ranboo know it’s him. ranboo can then tap him or write on his arm to indicate he’s listening. then tubbo can say whatever he wanted to say

- if it requires a simple response, ranboo’s able to either sign a response or trace one on tubbo’s arm. if it requires a ‘translator’ of sorts, ranboo will call tommy over. then ranboo can dictate what he wants to tell tubbo, and tubbo can read it as tommy writes it down. 

the most important aspect of their communication is that they genuinely want to help each other. all of them don't mind, and even enjoy being apart of a group that functions best when they’re with each other.

additional information

- the three of them each wear bracelets representing the other two, that are different colors and textures (so ranboo can tell the difference). the bracelets serve a bunch of purposes, but primarily make it easy to indicate when one of them needs someone else. for example, if tommy were nonverbal and needed to find ranboo, he could tap his purple bracelet and tubbo would take him to ranboo.

- their house is full of different kinds of whiteboards, chalkboards, and notepads. it’s a way most of them use to communicate, and it’s important that they always have access to one. even ranboo could use them in an emergency, though his handwriting would be iffy.

- they all essentially act as translators for each other. tommy’s able to tell ranboo what tubbo is signing. tubbo can tell ranboo what tommy is writing down. etc etc

sum of the activities they do together

- napping!! sleeping!! resting!! just laying around and existing in each other’s presence 

- art :) ranboo is partial to finger painting, and bigger canvasses. 

- the wildest games of charades you’ve ever seen in your life, no one knows what’s going on, the guesses get crazier every round

- listening to loud music, since tubbo is still able to feel the vibrations

- tubbo likes reading out loud to the other two. they get to hear stories and tubbo gets to practice talking out loud

- painting on each other’s hands and faces. it’s just a good time 

- walking around! they’ll link arms with ranboo and go wandering around the server. there’s smth for everyone, bc of all the different smells, sights, and sounds :)
