Working on a few things but nothing's wrapped up this week so here's a project I finished last year. For someone's birthday I embroidered linen so they could make their own tie on pockets using the pattern from Burnley and Trowbridge.

Every motif was stitched with a single strand of thread and this took about 90 hours to complete. The bottle caps help to drive home the scale - 18th century pockets were not small! I stitched this on 1.5 yards of linen and gifted the entire length so that the person could sew the finished project themselves, as they liked to sew historical costumes and I knew they would have opinions on things like the bindings. The main motifs are based on the Four Gentlemen of classical Chinese art - plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo. I aimed for a cohesive design but didn't want to create duplicate matching pockets. The borders and floating motifs are largely taken from historical early American embroidery designs.

still need to wash & frame everything. link + quick-fire review in the meantime:

hold the fuck up | stitched on 18ct | relatively quick and easy, the border is very repetitive & only two colours so it's nice and relaxing - not too much counting involved & very cute

everyone has pronouns, dipshit | stitched on 28ct | the parts where the trees intersected were a little finicky, but barely concentrated at all for the yellow so there was less squinting than i'd anticipated. i made this very hard for myself by cutting the fabric with Absolutely No leeway, dear god. entirely on me. unironically would do again though

allure of arson | stitched on 20ct | i adore bee's pride flag series in general & this was so fun - the colours are so vibrant and im obsessed with the way the pinks fade into purple. i used sparkly white backstitch for the letters instead of filling them in which turned out funky (in a good way)

i'm joining the war on orcas | stitched on 18ct | not for the faint-hearted - there's about 36 colours here! i was afraid of not matching the colours exactly (dmc is Expensive), but it turned out fine - on bee's advice, the more vibrant the better. i did not touch dmc 820 for 13 months after finishing but thats unrelated <3 love the way the whole thing turned out

I spliced two skeins of 820 that were noticably different shades of blue, which resulted in a slightly less flat background.

Also DMC 820 is called Very Dark Baby Blue. I'd just like you to know that.

I have actually worked EXTENSIVELY with dmc 820 and I'm still on it with a huge project! It might just be the amount of times you use it for all you know or such as my case, 820 getting unknowingly tangled because you're working on a dark background. Even then though, i haven't had much problem with it.

Metallics though, can be consider wizardry because keeping the frayed end on your needle AND preventing knots is so difficult.

A question to cross-stitchers of Tumblr

Does anyone else find that some colors of floss tangle more easily than others? Or am I just imagining things?

I’ve found “Very Dark Royal Blue” (DMC 820) a pain to work with, much more so than other colors, and I’m wondering if other people have experienced the same things with certain colors.

Alternatively, tell me I’m imagining things.

So here we have the first phase of my traditional piece all done in DMC 820 based on an old DMC pattern book of “Czech-Slovakian Designs”.  I truly love all the detailed curves on it.  Not as terribly difficult to do as it looks.  Everything is just split stitch.  Now for the fun part - doing some filling in with light blue here and there to finish it off.

To start the new year, I'm publishing my first pattern! A take on what hoenn route 120 might look like at night in the old gba games. Palette somewhat chosen by myself and the star patterns all designed myself. Sprites and art taken directly from the game.

Size: 160x288 stiches, 5x9 inches on 32 count fabric

Colours: 35 (if I counted right)

Notes: instead of gridding in 10x10 squares, this is done in 8x8 to mimic the tiles used in game. The colours for the water and stars (820, 823, 550, 554, white/b5200) are all done with DMC Mouline Etoile to add some extra sparkle, but could also be worked straight, or with blending filament.

It’s finally finished! Here is my 20x20″ pillow based on an old DMC Library book showcasing “Czecho-Slovakian Embroideries.”  I changed it a little.  The original pattern had all thick lines.  I alternated thick with thin.  It is all done using just two thread colors - DMC 820 and DMC 986.  The stitching is satin stitch, leaf stitch for the light blue filling and a bunch of split stitch for the thin lines.  The fabric is just an old linen dinner napkin.  The dark blue pillowcase is a 20x20″ linen piece I picked up in the clearance basket at IKEA. :)  I sewed the napkin on top of the pillow case, stuffed it with a pillow and voila there you have it.

To everyone who wants the patterns here you go! I made this from a combo of two separate patterns actually, I did my lettering first and then added the flower border from this free pattern off the DMC website. I had to make some minor tweaks to the spacing of the flowers as I went along to make it better fit the hoop and the lettering, but it is primarily the same. This used a ten inch hoop and DMC colors 820, 799, 3051, 3052, 304, and 310. If you make your own please tag me or send it to me because I’d love love love to see it!!!
