So at the end of Feb this year, XZ began getting attacked and defamed. On 2/27, many of his solo fans began complaining and reporting a story about XZ on AO3. This trended on Weibo, eventually reaching the media and then the government. The gov was planning on blocking AO3 in the country for a while, and they used this situation as an excuse to shut it down. Unfortunately, XZ’s name was all over it. That began the hordes of antis, specifically paid antis, who attempted to dig into XZ’s life and make up lies about him to bring him down. They paid for Weibo hot searches for several weeks and months; they even did one earlier this month.

It’s quieted down quite substantially now. Weibo’s also finally working with XZ’s studio to bring the antis down once and for all.
