When Elvis arrived in Honolulu on January 9th, 1973, several days ahead of the Aloha From Hawaii rehearsal concert and satellite broadcast, he was helicoptered from the airport to the Hilton Village for a filmed reception with fans, and where he had a few brief words with an old friend, ‘Uncle’ Tom Moffatt.
Tom Moffatt was a DJ and concert promoter who, according to his 2016 obituary on Hawaii News Now, ‘made his name in the islands in 1957, when he brought Elvis Presley to perform before thousands of adoring fans’. Tom Moffatt described Elvis' first show in Hawaii as one of the most exciting events he had ever presented; ‘I remember he did Hound Dog and then everybody's screaming. He jumped off the stage, got on his knees with his guitar and the place went bananas.’
Moffatt had been promoting Elvis’ Hawaiian fan club around the time of Love Me Tender, organising a competition to win the hat Elvis wore in the movie and receiving 53 000 entries, alerting Colonel Parker to Elvis’ enormous local popularity. Elvis played three very successful shows in Honolulu over November 10th and 11th, 1957, cementing the relationship. Keen to secure Elvis for his first touring show after discharge from the Army, Moffatt bailed up Colonel Parker who was vacationing in Hawaii while Elvis was still in Germany, securing a commitment on the promise of a huge petition signed by local fans, urging Elvis to come back to Hawaii.
The result would be the famous USS Arizona Memorial benefit show in 1961, which raised over $65 000, more than 10% of the final cost of the project. According to Moffatt in an interview with Dutch television, the idea for the benefit aspect was Colonel Parker’s alone, responding to news that the entire memorial project was about to collapse through lack of funding. Parker and Elvis covered all their own expenses (as they did in 1975 for the McComb Tornado benefit in Mississippi).
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser described Tom Moffatt as ‘one of the most influential figures in the Hawaii entertainment industry’, the first rock DJ in Hawaii and one of the pioneers of modern Top 40 Radio, dominating the ratings throughout the 1960s on radio station KPOI. He was clearly liked and trusted by both Elvis and Colonel Parker, and was given access for interviews, including long-distance by phone to Germany, and later brought some Hawaiian fans, contest winners, to visit Elvis on the Hollywood set of Blue Hawaii.
Over six-decades as a concert and event promoter, Tom Moffatt Productions brought a spectacular roster of artists to Hawaii, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, The Shirelles, Connie Francis, the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Everly Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Liza Minelli, Michael and Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and the Eagles. According to his obituary, he presented almost every big name in the music business at least once, presented classical concerts, ballet and musical theatre, and was the leading promoter of ‘mega-concerts’ at the 50 000 seat Aloha Stadium. He also ran record labels and was strongly committed to actively promoting local artists and material.
He continued working as a promoter and DJ into his 80s, and passed away in December 2016, aged 85.

Pride Floats
Not many things can get me WILLFULLY out of bed at 5am, but when I heard that there was a dance party on a boat that sailed around Manhattan, I was intrigued.
Daybreakers NYC is a “morning dance party that will start your day with energy and intention” and this particular one was Pride themed. Let me tell you. It. Was. EPIC.
Around 1,000 passengers set sail from Pier 40 on a Hornblower Cruises ship, donned in their brightest attire as they danced their faces off to DJ Sammy Bananas, Me2Me2, and a live performance by Dragonette.

To keep the energy high, healthy juices and breakfast items such as protein bars, yogurt and overnight oats were provided.
The energy and feeling of community was contagious and this will definitely be added to my list of yearly traditions.

megastar monday - public enemy
what a way to start the week, chickens.
i am very excited about today, and all of us here at PCR are jazzed to be bringing the noise to y’all today with our latest installment of megastar monday, featuring the one and only.... public enemy.
a little background info for you...
“Public Enemy is an American hip hop group consisting of Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff, Khari Wynn, DJ Lord, Sammy Sam, and the S1W group (along with former members Terminator X, Sister Soljah and DJ Juice) . Formed in Long Island, New York, in 1986, they are known for their politically charged music and criticism of the American media, with an active interest in the frustrations and concerns of the African American community.
Their first four albums during the late 1980s and early 1990s were all certified either gold or platinum and were, according to music critic Robert Hilburn in 1998, "the most acclaimed body of work ever by a hip hop act". Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine called them "the most influential and radical band of their time." They were inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.”
“Public Enemy made contributions to the hip-hop world with sonic experimentation as well as political and cultural consciousness, which infused itself into skilled and poetic rhymes. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that "PE brought in elements of free jazz, hard funk, even musique concrète, via [its] producing team the Bomb Squad, creating a dense, ferocious sound unlike anything that came before." Terminator X's innovative scratching tricks can be heard on the songs "Rebel Without a Pause", "Night of the Living Baseheads", and "Shut 'Em Down". Public Enemy held a strong, pro-black, political stance. Before PE, politically motivated hip-hop was defined by a few tracks by Ice-T, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kurtis Blow and KRS-One. PE was a revolutionary hip-hop act, basing an entire image around a specified political stance. With the successes of Public Enemy, many hip-hop artists began to celebrate Afrocentric themes, such as Kool Moe Dee, Gang Starr, X Clan, Eric B. & Rakim, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, and A Tribe Called Quest. “
“The revolutionary influence of the band is seen throughout hip-hop and is recognized in society and politics. The band "rewrote the rules of hip-hop", changing the image, sound and message forever. Pro-black lyrics brought political and social themes to hardcore hip hop, with stirring ideas of racial equality, and retribution against police brutality, aimed at disenfranchised blacks, but appealing to all the poor and underrepresented. Before Public Enemy, hip hop music was seen as "throwaway entertainment", with trite sexist and homophobic lyrics. Public Enemy brought social relevance and strength to hip hop.” (info within quotes courtesy of wikipedia)
With 14 studio albums to their credit, public enemy created a soundtrack for a generation, and as someone that their music wasn’t necessarily created for, it had a huge impact on me as a teenager growing up in the deep south and knowing the shit i saw all around me wasn’t right, but didn’t yet fully understand the impact of. i didn’t fear the truth of the music, and understood pretty quickly that if it scared you, you were the problem, not the music, if that makes sense. i guess what i am saying is that public enemy really opened my fucking eyes as well as my ears to the reality of the way the world really was for people who didn’t look like me. it had that power that only music has, to change the way you look at things and experience the world. public enemy told a story, told the truth, their truth, and did it in a way that still captivates me to this day, and with some gotdayum slamming motherfuckin beats.
we tried to play a little bit of everything from PE today, but we mostly chose the tracks we really like, so if we missed a PE you really love, let us know!
man, i’ve had it up to here kisses,
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
love (mick jagger used to be beautiful now he’s a dehydrated banana) axiomatic and the punk (i send you gold you send me richard simmons) mummy

YEAR OF THE GHOST DOG
[TL;DR version for the New Yorker -- I loved many great short songs and became obsessed with (1) a very old, much longer one (2) and YouTube comments this year.] [links to previous year’s lists at the bottom]
A while back, I found myself in an extended funk. The reasons are uninteresting and honestly a bit dumb, a mix of everyday bummers and more existential stuff, all of which manifested in a kind of 360º sluggishness. I couldn’t really figure my way out of it but I believed that I would eventually stop feeling this way.
One night, I saw that someone online was selling a copy of the Emulations “These Are the Things,” a magnificent soul ballad 7″ out of Oakland. I wasn’t exactly homesick for the Bay Area, but something about the song’s roots, as well as its overwhelming feeling of optimistic yearning, resonated with (through?) me. There’s a moment when the singer’s falsetto peaks, and the piano starts cascading, and things feel like they’re going to work out after all. The copy for sale wasn’t in great shape, and it cost $100, an extravagant amount of money to spend on a piece of music. But I convinced myself that I’d feel better at some point, weeks, months, or years later, and I’d listen to my Emulations single, and recall that weird summer/fall.
As often happened with independently produced records of the sixties and seventies, “These Are the Things” was pressed on styrene, rather than vinyl. Styrene is a kind of plastic that’s lighter, cheaper and much more fragile than vinyl, and you can tell the difference by a kind of hollow plink when you put it on a turntable. Styrene also means that it has a limited life, and that each time the needle drags across its grooves, the record degrades a little bit. Over time, styrene records that get played a lot no longer sound as crisp or clear (or so it seems). I listened to it once it arrived, feeling a bit of regret at this wild expenditure, but also imagining my future self’s gratitude. I imagined entering into communion with everyone who had played this copy before me. I decided to only listen to the song once a year, if that--after all, each time I listened to the record, the song was changing, slightly.
A few months later, I felt normal (whatever that means) again, and the record became a marker of...I’m not sure what--maybe a kind of blind, stubborn optimism. Someone years later uploaded the song onto YouTube, which means I can listen to it whenever I want. This fall, I was trying and failing to spend less time on the Internet. But I decided that, instead of going on Twitter and Facebook, I would just read comments fans left on YouTube. I became obsessed with reading all the intimate histories people shared with one another--the chance encounters, the teenage dates and breakups, the seventies shop owners who recalled the days when stocking the right hit single could cover an entire month’s rent. I was listening to the Emulations when I noticed this comment, from Deric Jackson, who was apparently one of the group’s members: “I sung this song when I was 19yrs old. It was a pleasure to record and send this messageout into the airways. I have been with the women that God had given me to marry when I was 22yrs old. I did not understand at that time I was singing about my own life and the women who I had not met, but how wonderful it is to be with my wife fo 35yrs and life is still a breath of fresh air and wonderful. I would like to say to all real men love your wife, never worship her only one to worship is God alone.“ I’m pretty agnostic about most things relating to providence. But I felt as though I had been living in these words: “I did not understand at that time...” Jackson’s song was a prophecy, maybe even a conjuring, of his own path, and I wonder what he hears when he listens to it now. Sometimes you don’t know what’s coming next. But there’s always another song, and it doesn’t always sound the same as the last time.

Pulse Music: 10 new songs you need to hear this week
New music gets the week going. Pulse staff picks the top 10 songs across genres in Nigeria to keep you pumped up all week
In a country where the talent stream knows no borders, new music gets released across the country on a daily, but only few ever gets heard. After the partying and bubbling of the weekend, there is need to discover something new for the week ahead. We have cleft the rock and here is our top 10 pick this week.
1. Remy Baggins - 'Come thru'
Remy "The Savage" Baggins is a 22 year old Singer and Producer based in Lagos State, Nigeria. Remy released an EP titled “Eigengrau” in 2017.
Remy has worked with the likes of Ice Prince, MI Abaga, Ajebutter22, Wavos, Kay-switch, Famous Bobson and Jinmi Abduls; with production credits on Ajebutter’s "What Happens In Lagos" album and additional production on M.I's "Rendezvous" Playlist. After the successful release of his first single of 2018 titled “Gradually”, the songwriter, performing and recording artist Adepoju Adeyinka Oluwabusayo professionally known as “Gbasky”, rides out with a Kunle Badmus produced single titled “Aimasiko”.
'Aimasiko' which is a Yoruba word for “Impatience” is a song dedicated to every young hustler out there, working tirelessly to make a life for themselves irrespective of the odds against them and in due time things will fall in place.
