Hey! As someone who's only kinda recently started getting into Blind Channel, can you "introduce" the band members to me/tell me any fun facts? 😊
It's okay if not, I just feel like it's so fun hearing it from other fans than trying to dig it out myself LOL
Welcome friend đŸ–€
You're about to get an essay 😂 anyone please add in, this isn't an all inclusive list of everything about them.
Let's start with Joel - vocals (and guitar depending on if you're going back to the first couple albums)
Joel is the oldest member of the band at 30, has ADHD, has dealt with insomnia, talked about being bullied in highschool, handles the band's social media, has a wine and has made a lot of references to dating his hand 😂
He is one half of the (t)error twins with Joonas, such named by the other members of the band for their chaos and having the same birthday, one year apart. He has said more than once that Joonas is his closest friend and they're found hanging out a lot outside of the band, they have been called an old married couple, always squabbling (but with a lot of obvious brotherly love)
Joonas - guitar
Second half of the (t)error twins, sings backing vocals, has been photographed with his dick out on more than once occasion, has a naked painting of himself, he's (sometimes questionably) a fashionista, and is known to have a rather sensitive digestive system.
Joel met Joonas in highschool after their own bands ended and became friends, eventually decided to form their own band, Joonas had already been in a band with Olli and their now tour manager Santeri, and previously in one with Tommi. Joonas, Olli, and Tommi are childhood friends prior to highschool.
Niko - vocals
Niko went to the same highschool as the other founding members, but hung out with a different crowd. Joonas, Olli, and (maybe) Tommi were at a house party, Linkin Park’s In The End came on, Niko rapped Mike's parts and Joonas invited him to join him for the band’s first practice the next day. Joel picked him up, even though they hadn't met.
He plays and teaches piano, writes most of the band's lyrics (though there is collaboration), has a kitty named Rommi, has a long term girlfriend, Joonas lived with them for a while. He has a large band symbol on his side with roses for each of the band members (minus Aleksi, but he does have a matching tattoo with him)
Tommi - drums
Papa bear himself! Lot of bear references with him, he has the nickname nalle (teddy bear in Finnish) from the band. He used to drive the band around when they were still in vans rather than tour buses and his job in the band is to “have final say”.
There's a single brain cell in this band, and most of the time it seems like Tommi has it, but every once in a while he's as dumb (affectionate) as the rest of them. He and Olli are the only two still in the band's hometown and as far as we know he is the only member of the band without tattoos. And he's a nurse!
Olli - bass
Called the most beautiful member of the band by his bandmates and known to eye-fuck any camera that happens to be focused on him.
Or if you happen to be watching them live 😳 it's intense.
He used to have gauges. There are several photos and videos of him and Joonas just holding hands đŸ–€ (lots of love in this band)
He can come off as a bit of an airhead, the biggest example of this is his poor bass Simba (rip) that he left on top of a van at a gas station, didn't realize until they had left and was far far down the road. He did eventually get it back but it was destroyed.
He designed their newest stage outfits and even sewed the patches on himself. He used to work at a hospital transporting patients.
Aleksi - DJ/percussion
Newest member of the band and only non-original member.
Had/has a solo DJ career and career as a producer as Alex Mattson, and accidentally ignored Joel in 2016 when he reached out to talk about a collab.
He ended up meeting Joel and Joonas at a Bring Me the Horizon concert in November of 2016 (where they also met Joonas (Johnny) Parkkonen) and they cleared up the accident and became friends.
He collaborated with them and help with song writing/production before he officially joined the band in 2020
Baby of the band and a menace. He got his first tattoo with a couple members there to hold his hand, I think it was Joel and Niko, Joonas went with him to get his band tattoo.
He grew up around the music scene (his dad is a booking agent) and was a drummer in a band as a kid. He has a little dachshund named Rilla
Joel, Joonas, Niko, and Aleksi all have the band's symbol tattooed on them. Joel's is in his arm, Joonas has it in his hand, Niko on his side, and Aleksi near his wrist.

For the ask game, how about Penny Crygor
Send Me a Character!
Tumblr media
First impression She cute!!! I think I did rewatch her Smooth Moves cutscenes on (baby) YouTube multiple times, though the number ain't matchin' up to how many times I did that for Cricket and his was a lot. Unfortunately I did not properly digest the DIY tutorials and the humor behind it, so a lot of Pennifer lore flew over my (child) head. She does draw a cute turtle though.
Impression now Still think she's cute! Actually debated on roleplaying her when Gold came out but, Ana won and now many seem to associate me with that baby ninja...for better or for worse. Fixations man... Anyhoo, Penny is a darling, she deserves the wonderful fans and song she got just for being her.
Favorite moment I don't think Penny's introduction to the series will be topped (in my brain). And this is on top of the fact that Penny's Song is a banger. I liked the lil dainty scientific song she had back then...maybe even a *notch* more than the lyrical thing.
Idea for a story Penny hosting a karaoke session for the crew (and/or maybe a few bonus characters cuz I'm a crossover freak) mildly based on this ask I sent to freak, and the sheer amount of times I listened to Grunkle Stan belt out songs. I mean...9-Volt is likely the DJ behind it, but I could see Penny properly hosting the shindig with or without his help.
Unpopular opinion Shipping is a guilty pleasure thing sometimes, and I'm fond of both Ashley and/or Jamie T. being romantic partners for Penny. There could be some other girl out there too. IDK...I don't focus too much on their shipping lore...it's dangerous dude.
Favorite relationship Canonically we only got scraps of it and it's heavily fueled by fans, but Penny and Mike being siblings/uncle&niece/WHATEVER is great. They annoy and love each other.
Favorite headcanon There's a possible chance that Doris was Penny's nanny when she was bapy. Crygor could've invented Doris for nanny purposes but his dumbass accidentally lost her. Penny might have some abandonment issues due to the Doris incident...oh god the angst potential. But probs for the sake of silliness, she sorta shook it off cuz maybe Crygor made many bots to cater to raising the girl...It's fiction. Cartoons are weird. I could write that fic though ... or not. I've been struggling on the creative front.

Kinda makes me feel small and insignificant. Like I was the subject of a Kendrick Lamar diss track.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s feud — the biggest beef in recent rap history — explained
In one of the biggest beefs in recent hip-hop history, Drake and Kendrick Lamar are feuding — to the point that police were asked about their feud after a security guard was shot outside Drake’s Toronto mansion on Tuesday.
But it wasn’t always this way.
Over a decade ago, the pair collaborated on a few songs:
On Drake’s 2011 track “Buried Alive Interlude,” on Lamar’s 2012 release “Poetic Justice,” and on A$AP Rocky’s “(Expletive) ’ Problems” that same year.
That didn’t last very long.
In 2013, Pulitzer Prize winner Lamar was featured on Big Sean’s “Control,” in which he called out a slew of contemporary rappers including Drake, J. Cole, Meek Mill, Pusha T, A$AP Rocky, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha T and even Big Sean among them.
youtube
“I got love for you all, but I’m trying to murder you,” he rapped. “Trying to make sure your core fans never heard of you.”
Drake responded in a Billboard cover story, saying “I know good and well that Kendrick’s not murdering me, at all, in any platform.”
Shortly afterward, at the 2013 BET Hip-Hop Awards, Lamar took another jab at Drake.
Over the next few years, the rappers launched disses at each other with less frequency.
Drake had other beefs with other performers, like Meek Mill in 2015, and most infamously Pusha T in 2018, where the latter rapper dropped “The Story of Adidon,” revealing Drake is a father.
In October 2023, J. Cole perhaps accidentally reignited the beef on “First Person Shooter” with Drake.
He rapped “Love when they argue the hardest MC / Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me?” referencing Lamar and Drake’s birth name, Aubrey Graham.
“We the big three like we started a league / but right now, I feel like Muhammad Ali.”
Which brings us to the current moment.
Here’s a timeline of the developments in recent weeks — it should be noted that diss tracks between rappers often include exaggerated truths and unsubstantiated rumors for dramatic effect, and that police have not said the feud led to Tuesday’s shooting.
March 22: Lamar disses Drake on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That”
“The big three,” Lamar raps, referencing J. Cole’s boast. “It’s just big me.”
He references Drake’s 2023 album “For All the Dogs,” and also compares himself to Prince and Drake to Michael Jackson: “Prince outlived Mike Jack.”
J. Cole soon releases a response, “7 Minute Drill,” but quickly apologizes for it onstage at his Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, N.C.
April 13: Drake’s “Push Ups” leaks
Drake’s response is leaked and later premiered by DJ Akademiks.
“You ain’t in no Big Three, SZA got you wiped down, Travis got you wiped down, Savage got you wiped down,” he raps about Lamar.
It also assumed Drake takes aim at Future, Metro Boomin, Rick Ross and The Weeknd — Ross releases a response track shortly afterward.
April 24: Drake responds with a second, AI-assisted diss track, “Taylor Made Freestyle”
Drake’s second diss track used artificial intelligence technology to include verses from Tupac and Snoop Dogg, two of Lamar’s influences.
In his own verse, Drake accuses Lamar of delaying his response track because of the imminent release of Taylor Swift ‘s “The Tortured Poets Department.” (Lamar collaborated with Swift on “Bad Blood.”)
Tupac’s estate threatened to sue Drake in response, so he removed the song from his social channels.
Snoop Dogg responded to the news in a video on Instagram.
“They did what? When? How? Are you sure?” he said. “I’m going back to bed. Good night.”
April 30: Lamar hits back with a nearly six-and-a-half-minute track, “Euphoria”
This is where it gets more complicated.
Lamar’s “Euphoria” hits like an opus, unleashing a slew of allegations against Drake.
He comes after Drake’s skills as a rapper, use of AI, appearance, racial identity, and parenting.
“I got a son to raise, but I can see you know nothin’ ’bout that,” Lamar raps.
The title is a reference to the HBO series “Euphoria,” of which Drake is an executive producer.
Lamar teases that he’ll go “back-to-back” with his tracks.
May 3: Lamar drops a follow-up, “6:16 in LA”
In Lamar’s next diss, titled after a time and location like Drake is wont to do, Lamar targets the company Drizzy keeps.
“Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me? / Fake bully, I hate bullies,” he raps, referencing Drake’s record label. “You must be a terrible person / Everyone inside your team is whispering that you deserve it.”
According to Billboard, the song was produced by Sounwave and Jack Antonoff — the latter notably Swift’s longtime producer.
It also samples Al Green’s “What a Wonderful Thing Love Is,” on which one of Drake’s relatives played guitar.
youtube
May 3: Drake launches “Family Matters”
Drake hits back with a music video and a nearly eight-minute response, in which he alleges abuse and infidelity in Lamar’s relationship with his fiancee.
May 4: Lamar responds with “Meet the Grahams”
Almost immediately afterward, Lamar releases “Meet the Grahams,” which begins with the rapper addressing Drake’s son: “I’m sorry that man is your father.”
Lamar also addresses Drake’s parents, and “a baby girl,” alleging that Drake has a secret daughter.
He also labels Drake a “predator,” without elaborating.
May 4: Less than 24 hours later, Lamar drops “Not Like Us”
Hours later, Lamar doubles down, releasing “Not Like Us,” produced by DJ Mustard.
“Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young / You better not ever go to cell block one,” Lamar raps.
May 5: Drake softens his blows on “The Heart Part 6”
Referencing Lamar’s “The Heart” series, Drake drops “The Heart Part 6” in response.
In the song, which samples Aretha Franklin’s “Prove It,” Drake challenges Lamar’s allegations, doubles down on his own against him, and says that he does not have a secret daughter.
youtube
He sounds notably lethargic on the song — potentially taking a final bow with verses like, “You know, at least your fans are gettin’ some raps out of you / I’m happy I could motivate you.”

i am sorry.
sugar in chicago. Monday, September 19th, 2005 12:19 pm mike murphy all up in demar hamiltons ass went to the alk3/my chemical bromance with demar and nick on the dick. pretty hilarious. the bands let the good times roll. went by pizza metro and made awesome jokes. and ate like 60 bucks worth of super flat pizza. startling revelations about demars life. i like hanging with old friends. down the street from the girl to trevia. kinda chill. matt skiba talked to me about clandestine. pretty amazing. we are wearing all black coming up hats. greg let me dj for a minute and i played some faint and refused. P-Unit. people at my house when i went home. freaked me out. sleeeepover prince. search the net and you can find some amazing pictures. Saturday, September 17th, 2005 4:52 pm reNICKulous woah. got my g.i. joe aircraft carrier in the mail yesterday. its seven feet long. thats like me and patrick stacked on top of eachother. ate a box of life cereal yesterday. kinda gross. somehow with all the chaos of everything i got normal again. its weird to me that 50cents mom is a lesbian. i dunno why. it totally fits and totally doesn't. just like everything else. i saw the motorola commercial we were asked to be in with madonna. yeah thats right- "sell out boy" turned one down cause it wasn't the right situation. haha. we would have had to cancel shows and all- just wasn't right. i just wanted to meet the material girl. we don't do everything were asked to. waited out going over to watch demar pass out and get kissed. instead went to the city. carnival life. we bought ice cream shoes online from hongkong. get jealous. counted freckles. yawn. patrick came over today. we worked on some secret stuff. him and his gee eff are way too lame and cute. i cant wait to see corpse bride. awesomeness. just waiting for tonight to happen.
oops comments wahahaha. Thursday, September 15th, 2005 11:27 pm this week he's mopping floors, next week he's on fries early bird gets the worm. took a headache for my tylenol. went to the cover shoot for spin magazine. it was ridiculous as always. i put myself into the worst clothes i could find cause thats just funny to me on the inside. nickplan and drunkmar showed up cause they keep it the realest. got weird emails all day. pretty standard. someday we'll be nostalgic for right now. but until then you can put it in a pinebox. its funny the mistakes you realize you are making as you go about things. cause those are the worst. it only makes sense when you are that close. otherwise its blurry and filled with lies. and you can say whatever you want but in the dark i know what you look like and think- and no one else does. nothing that needs to be spoken of. im the kind of kid that will go to the goddamned end. file me under: fucking speechless. right to her house. wow, it's been a month. we don't talk. it goes without saying. freckles. kinda dreamy. and i ain't too hard on the eyes. only those arms make it okay. i just don't care anymore. this is the three year boy. this is the lover boy. this is the keeper. the is the one that got away. i drop records, not names. so i'm not letting you in. buzznet updated. please leave my friends or whatever alone, because i have- and im sick of hearing about it. raise your hand if you're excited for fall tour. time to become the person i was supposed to be.
Current Music: you make me wanna lala 12:59 am "growing uuuuuuuuup, i guess i am my own better half" what were they thinking? i'm tired. ate for the first time in what feels like forever today. you know gotta keep that charm. what does that even mean? actually have to get up at 9am for a photo shoot tommorrow. the wackest. i guess it could be worse. i could have to sell stuff or work in a factory instead of just getting laughed at by some dumb photographer cause we don't know how to pose right. flashflashflash. goddamn the new panic at the disco record makes me feel okay in any situation. only two people in the entire world know how it goes. its kind of funny that i get to be one of them. but its strange the way only one person makes you feel electric. like you were meant to be three inches away from them always. but then its gone. or they are. went to green street hooligans. ate your popcorn and drank your soda. cause im kinda a baby. movie dates are funny cause you either watch the movie or you talk the whole time. both are kind of a let down. fall is definitely hug season. bring it on. who knows how it turns out. don't believe the hype. i didn't overdose. this really is me typing.
Tuesday, September 13th, 2005 10:39 pm difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week. oh no oh no. i don't get it but then i don't think i am supposed to. today woke up and bought my friend shoes cause she's rad and i like buying stuff for my friends. i am sick, but it's gonna be okay. i love going to bars with my friends and ordering 5 dollar sprites. yeah i'm that guy. right now i wish this was a lyric i wrote: "i dunno why other rappers try and dis you. cause even my superficial raps are super official". i'm supposed to be waiting by the phone but i'm always at front desk in the hotel lobby. i told my friend that i want to get super big bling jesus necklace- they said it doesn't make sense because im not super into jesus- but i told them that was the whole point. i sing the blues just for the covers of magazines. oh yeah. the rest of my day. ive been going out into the real world alot lately. the sun hurts my eyes but you're making me grin. went to joes house in boy's town- its like one inch big and filled with 80 million things. ebay says that my g.i. joe aircraft carrier is in the mail. but who knows cause i tell people shit is in the mail all the time. its like waking up from a dream and not being sure. for sure. our new video is pretty sweet. hung with the bestest. it feels nice outside. time to go play. i think i am going to be vegetarian again, then probably vegan. cause it just feels right. like you. all i do is watch thundercats and crush hard. what a life.
Current Music: christina milian 2:22 am go right on reds, get left at altars i want to write a "hey momma" song for the emo world. it smells like coffee and rain everywhere today for me.
i have lost all respect for you. before you make accusations, check the scoreboard sweetheart.
just when you are about to give up sometimes a light comes on. like its the only one out there. and when you are unhappy they are a shoulder. and they make you laugh when you get thrown out the window like trash from a car. old friends bend. you got me smiling like it was a dream. and i am slowly letting everything else go.
let go let go.

A-T-4 005 Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4
Tumblr media
I'm going straight in with what is probably the most enduring and influential pieces of electronic ambient music of 1984. Of all of Manuel Göttsching's compositions E2-E4 was one that has crossed over to fans of Dub Reggae, Disco, Prog Rock, Techno, Vapour Wave, and a many more musical styles
Any nerd will tell you it was recorded in December 1981 but it didn't see a release date until 1984. E2-E4 is a performance recorded for himself in a single take one December evening. Its intention was to help Göttsching wind down from a recent long tour. "“I was flying to Hamburg the next day and I thought I’d record something to listen to on my Walkman during the flight,” says Göttsching. The piece was improvised and entirely in the moment."[2]  There was something about the recording that he couldn't just shelve alongside the many other tapes he'd made for this purpose over the years, he knew he'd hit on something different and special. In interviews from the late 2010s Göttsching continually highlights his delight at how well the recording had come out from a technical point of view. When a friend said he would love to release something by him on their new independent record label E2-E4 was ready to go. Göttsching was a key member of Ash Ra Tempel and he released solo work as Ashra he decided not to do that with E2-E4 and for the first time puts something out under his own name
The initial reaction in Berlin was negative, it was described as "muzak"[2]. In a 2019 interview with LoudAnd Quiet, Göttsching said "“The newspapers said I have not understood anything in the modern developments of electronic music,” Göttsching says of the initial reactions from Germany. “They said I should better listen to Depeche Mode.” The Berlin Magazine apologised to Göttsching a decade later, saying they probably made a big mistake."[1] Luckily E2-E4 was picked up by djs in New York, all articles point at Larry Levan introducing it into the New York club scene of the 1980s. “I was a bit surprised people were actually dancing to it,” says Göttsching now. “I didn’t record it in the sense of a dance piece. The drums were very in the background, and it’s not really a ‘bom bom bom’ bass”[1]
Like many people I first heard E2-E4 when it was used as the backbone of 1989 italo house classic Sueno Latino. It was hidden in plain sight as Balearic Mike discovers "One early Italian pressing [of Sueno Latino] on DFC even names the track, E2-E4"[3]
Manuel Göttsching died just over a-year-ago on December 4, 2022
Last year the supermarket chain ASDA did a range of homewares, duvets/bathmats/etc in a checkerboard with the same coffee and cream colour way that the sleeve of E2-E4 has, it reminded me of the record
It's a stunning piece of music. Hear it in its entirety below

Going Back: Ch. 25
~Coauthored by @zeitghest~
Fandom(s): Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach
Description: Things are looking up for Gregory. After putting the soul of a formerly-immortal killer to rest, he and his new family can finally begin their lives anew. Sure, Gregory might have been cursed with mysterious Remnant in exchange for being involved in this mess—not to mention his caretakers consist of sentient robots and ghosts
But there’s no doubt that the bond they share is unbreakable. They love him, and he in turn.
All in all, life is finally starting to go right for once.

Unfortunately, true peace is a hard-won battle. There are other things to contend with besides William’s decrepit soul, and Gregory will learn that his role in the lives of the Aftons and Emilys is far greater than anyone could’ve imagined.

On days like this, Gregory sometimes wished he wasn't born.
Yes, Gregory knew what the special occasion was. And simply due to the date, his mood was already spoiled.
Waking up this morning was a pain. He could tell everyone knew something was off, though Gregory kept tight-lipped about it and tried his best not to seem so grouchy. As Gregory wandered the less-populated rooms of the Pizzaplex waiting for closing time to officially begin, he contemplated many things. One was the amazing friends he had; how on days like today he wished he could be happy and tell them the truth—that he was grateful just to be alive.
But those happy moments had a catch: they only existed when he was around the people he loved most. When he was alone, all those hard thoughts came crashing down in suffocating waves. The worst of his years were over thanks to the odd but overall good turn his life had taken... but their awful memory would always remain.
In one of the currently vacant party rooms, Gregory drew. His tablet had been exchanged for simple pen and paper as he sketched pictures of himself, of his friends, of odd people he saw in passing that day. Then, a knock came to the door. That was how Gregory knew everyone was filing out of the Pizzaplex; Michael said he’d come to tell him when the day shift was over, so Gregory abandoned his artwork in favor of meeting the guard. Maybe he just needed his brother to get his mind off of everything.
“Hey, kid!” Michael greeted with a surprised laugh as Gregory practically fell onto him in a tight hug the second he opened the door. He squeezed back, looking down at him with an intrigued tilt of his head.
Gregory had been acting weird today, that's for sure. Everyone knew it was his birthday, though no one had stated it out loud yet. Michael and Charlie had prepared a raucous greeting with their extra-fancy hotel breakfast, but one look at Gregory's face as he shambled out of the bedroom made the cheer die in their throats. With telepathic communication, they agreed to treat this like a normal day until the main event this evening unless Gregory indicated otherwise. Mike certainly understood a person not liking birthdays. He had his own hang-ups about his special day, let alone Evan's...
But Gregory was still so young to be sulking like this. It only made Michael more excited to present him with the gift he'd been working hard to acquire on the downlow. Well, technically he'd gotten two things—one was a present from Mike to their whole family unit, while the other was for Freddy to give Gregory himself. Only he and the former bear knew exactly what lay in those two perfectly-wrapped gift boxes, and they were both buzzing with anticipation for the look on Gregory's face when he opened them.
“How's it going?” Michael asked once he was released, ruffling Gregory's hair. As always, it'd lost some of its volume as the day went on, and Mike was considering asking Roxy to be on touch-up duty whenever she was available. Holding out a hand, he smiled down at his brother. “Let's walk and talk. Sam wanted me to ask if you could help pick a few songs for DJ Music Man's new remix. He's not sure what'd go best together and wants our opinions, so we're meeting the others in the West Arcade—that cool with you?”
Gregory buried his face into Michael’s stomach as he hugged his brother, muttering a muffled, “Hello.” At Mike’s offer to help them work on a new setlist for the oversized spider-bit, Gregory seemed a little more excitable. There was a twinkle in his eye at the idea of doing something productive and worthwhile to waste away the remaining hours until it was officially the next day.
“That’s cool with me!” Gregory said, very obviously trying to muster up the energy to let go if his brother. “I haven’t seen DJ in a while; he’s probably got some cool ideas for remixes.”
Slowly Gregory led the way for the West Arcade, without a clue that every single animatronic and ghost was waiting for him there. Lurking in the darkness, watching patiently for when Gregory showed his face on the dance-floor and the show lights would go up to reveal them.
The stage was set—quite literally. Decorations lined the DJ booth and the surrounding dance floor: dozens of balloons in any color you could imagine; streamers tied in rainbow configurations hung up over every surface that wasn’t a blatant fire hazard; hell, they’d even rigged two confetti canons to go off as soon as Charlie pressed the button.
There was an extra-large pizza box on stage that contained one of the infamous Afton-Emily Frankenstein pizzas. Next to that was a napoleon ice cream cake with blue icing that read:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREGORY!
—in Freddy’s perfect script. And finally, next to all the plates and silverware was an impressive stack of presents. It was easy to tell who most of them were from by the wrapping job alone, and if one looked closely they could see a gift from every new friend Gregory had made along his adventures.
Michael did his best to keep a neutral face as he trailed along. He couldn’t let his smile get too wide, lest the kid get suspicious. Still, the closer they got to the arcade, the more the air buzzed with an undercurrent of excitement. By the time they stepped out of the elevator into the attraction, the feeling was palpable.
“Come on,” Michael urged, noting Gregory's hesitancy. He understood why the kid would be wary of surprises, but this would be a good one. With a gentle hand on his back, he led the boy into the unnaturally dark dance floor

Gregory was only hesitant because he didn’t want to pop the balloons or bat anything out of place. Squinting in the dark, Gregory could see the streamers clear as day. Not his friends though; they hid expertly behind the DJ booth. Crouched beside Music Man, some of them had to stifle their laughs with their palms as Gregory approached.
“What’s with all this crud laying around?” he asked, carefully navigating to the center of the dance floor, overcome with a strange sense of urgency and danger. “I don’t think the DJ’s even here
Uh—can we turn on the lights?”
Normally he would never be scared of the dark when he could see just fine with those softly glowing eyes of his. But when Gregory turned and no one was there, he felt his heart skip a beat.
“Mike?! Hello?” he called, arms coming around to hold himself tightly and self-soothe. Then, one of the many spotlights turned on with a deafening clunk, shining directly on him in a way that made Gregory freeze up completely.
“The guest of honor has arrived!” Freddy’s booming voice echoed from the surround sound speakers. “Welcome to this special event we have created just for you
”
Suddenly another spotlight flipped on, this one aimed at the stage. Freddy stood front and center, eyes shining with excited pride for both his son and the amazing party they’d created in his honor. Gesturing towards Gregory with an outstretched hand, Freddy grinned into the microphone held up to his mouth. “Happy birthday, superstar!”
The house lights raised and a pop rendition of Happy Birthday to You blasted from the speakers underneath a cacophony of enthusiastic cheers. The crowd jumped from their hiding spots in tandem with a burst of confetti that showered Gregory in a flurry of shinning paper.
Everyone seemed to come out of the woodwork, surprising Gregory with a jump and outstretched arms as every spirit and robot made their way to the dancefloor. The reflective shower of purple and blue that rained over him brought Gregory back to the present, the cooling sensation reminding him he wasn’t going to die. This was nothing more than a surprise party, put on by his friends because they loved him. They just wanted him to be happy. Even so—
It was all so much

Gregory could feel hot tears attempting to break through, so he shut his eyes tight as he took in the crowd of adoring friends.
“T-Thanks, guys
 All of you
,” he murmured, sniffling very quietly. He wondered when it would be over. The kind words and cheers in his honor, and when it would all fall apart under him like last time—
“This is so
. You guys put so much work into this—” Finally, Gregory opened his eyes and let go of his arms, backing away from the stage. “I just—I need to pee. I-I’ll be right back!”
Charlie, who stood next to the DJ booth, looked to him with a tilted head.
“Gregory? H-Hey!” she called, worried but a second too late to grasp him. Gregory had disappeared behind a corner, his casual walk breaking into a full sprint.
“
Shit.” Michael’s curse was immediately met with a chorus of language! courtesy of the animatronics’ profanity filters, to which the guard rolled his eyes.
“I
I do not understand,” Freddy murmured, watching the corner Gregory disappeared around with utter confusion. The mic was lax in his hand as he blinked a few times, brows tilted together. “I know he has been acting off today, but I thought he would be happy with a party
”
“Freddy—” Michael placed a hand on the man’s shoulder with a sympathetic expression. “—it's nothing you did, I'm sure. I think the kid’s got some other things to work through that we might not’ve realized.”
Freddy was a wonderful friend and an even better father—it was easy to forget that he wasn’t human at his core. Unfortunately, some of those more subtle emotions and physical cues were still out of his scope of knowledge right now.
“
Ah.” The ursine man was frowning deeply at this point and Michael tightened his grip.
“Let me and Charlie talk to him?” he suggested, glancing over his shoulder to make sure Charlie was on board. “We might be able to help, depending on what's got him upset.”
“Yes
I agree.” Freddy nodded, placing his hand atop Michael’s and squeezing. As much as he hated to admit it, Michael was right. Surely they’d call Freddy if they needed him.
“We’ll be back asap—guys, don’t let this kill the party vibe!” Michael addressed the room with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. Moving to Charlie’s side, he slipped his hand in hers and tugged her in the direction their little brother ran off in.
Charlie was sure to impart a quick hug around Freddy’s back. The last thing she wanted was for Freddy to blame himself about the party. Whatever Gregory was going through, it was clear by his words and actions that the kid didn’t want to hurt their feelings or insult them. She figured Mike was right—that the party simply overwhelmed the sensitive kid.
“It’s going to be okay! We’ll get this party back on track.” One way or another, Charlie was sure of it. She folded her hand in Michael’s and darted to look for Gregory. The poor, anxiety riddled kid could be anywhere now

***
Gregory was choking on his tears as he ran.
This was wrong; he didn’t deserve a party. He didn’t deserve anything nice.
He was a rotten, shitty kid who only caused trouble in the end. He couldn't even survive correctly, turning into some immortal thing right before Mike, Freddy, and Charlie's eyes. Even if things seemed perfect now, they’d all go downhill eventually. His birthday served as a marker for the inevitable, so why make his friends waste the time and effort to celebrate it?
Gregory didn’t realize it then, but those weren’t truly his thoughts. They were the thoughts that Terry and Rita implanted in his brain, incepting his own with the sentiments of a terrible foster family’s mindset. Still he listened to them, just as he did back when he’d lived under their roof.
Running far and fast, Gregory hoped he could lose them temporarily in the hectic mess of the Superstar Daycare. There he should be able to clear his mind, at least long enough to put on a good face for a few hours. Sun was with the party crowd in the arcade, so there was no cheerful greeting awaiting Gregory when he entered the play area. He had free reign to slide into the ball pit and make his way for the massive play structure, finding a spot deep inside a plastic tube invisible to anyone looking in from the outside.
“I don’t know what set him off,” Michael admitted as he and Charlie ran.
They’d lost Gregory when he rode up the elevator, but Michael had a feeling he’d naturally go towards one of the places he felt safest, which was likely either Freddy’s room or the Daycare. Their first stop would be Rockstar Row, but upon finding no sign of crying children they headed for the colorful rainbow room. Michael ran a stressed hand through his hair, feeling bad for the situation.
Why did he even bother trying to combine his siblings and birthday parties anymore? No matter how good his intentions were now, it never seemed to work out

A sharp shake of the head chased away that dark train of thought. Tonight was about Gregory, not Michael’s past trauma.
Charlie didn’t have a clue what made Gregory so sad, either. All she wanted was to give Gregory a good day with all his friends, but come to think of it he'd pointedly avoided any talk of his birthday whenever they brought it up before.
“You’re taking this really hard,” Charlie observed, looking at Mike as they entered the Daycare. “We’ll find him. I don’t know what we’ll say exactly when we do, but don’t beat yourself up about it, Mikey
”
Brushing off Charlie’s words of encouragement with a half-hearted smile, Michael called out: “Gregory, you in here? It’s just Mike and Charlie—promise. Can
 we talk?”
Gregory was holed up, frozen. He scrunched further into the pipe as he heard them call his name, covering his mouth to successfully muffle the beginning of a sob.
“GREGORY! We’re sorry if we did something to hurt you! Please come out!” Charlie called, growing more desperate that she couldn’t find him. “God, Mikeïżœïżœ What if he ran away? Oh no—I—we should’ve brought Mari! She’d know where he is!”
“No, don’t you start with that shit,” Michael said with a sharp shake of his head. He was insistent, trying to convince himself of his own words as much as Charlie. “I’m sure he didn’t run away. He’s probably just
hiding somewhere. You know he’s good at that.” Looking towards the massive jungle gym, Michael had a pretty solid guess of where the kid might be.
“Gregory, please—” His tone was strained now, trying not to let Charlie’s panic affect his own anxiety. “—even if you don’t want to talk, at least let us know you’re okay
”
He was freaking them out—Gregory didn’t mean to frighten them.
God, why was he like this?
At Michael’s wishes, he crawled from the colorful plastic tubing just enough to poke his red face out. “I-I’m sorry
”
Charlie whipped around to the sound, clutching Michael to turn him as well.
“I’m really sorry. T-Tell Dad not to be upset. P-Please
,” Gregory choked. This caused tears to well up in Charlie’s eyes. Watching Gregory silently suffer in a spot she couldn’t easily reach him was the real source of her pain.
“Do you want to talk about it, kiddo?” Charlie would ask as gentle and sweetly as she could.
To this, Gregory would silently shake his head. He couldn’t just talk about it—he felt stupid for hating his birthday. For rejecting the party that his family clearly put a lot of effort into. What kind of jerk did this? Crying just because he was born?
“Hey, your dad is not upset,” Michael reassured, tone soft and placating like Charlie's. Now that he could see Gregory, tear-stained but unharmed, he was able to give the kid a little smile. “You know how hard you'd have to work to make Freddy pissed at you? That bear adores you, Gregory.”
Detaching himself from Charlie, Michael slowly moved closer to where the boy crouched in the tube. He could finagle his way into the play place if he really tried, but the kid might run away again. Gregory was clearly worked up to a degree they hadn't seen since the moment William, clad in Bonnie's body, nearly injected Remnant directly into his throat. At least then they'd known the cause of his distress... The fact that Michael had no idea what was making Gregory so upset worried him.
“You know, if you don't want to go back to the party that's totally fine,” he said, still in that low, measured tone. He was at the edge of the jungle gym now, looking up at Gregory through the netting. “Is it okay if Charlie and I hang with you for a bit, though?”
Michael was no stranger to not wanting to open up about something that deeply troubled him. Perhaps if he and Charlie moved at Gregory's pace, the kid would eventually clue them in as to what was going on in his head.
Gregory sat with his hands fixed to his head now, fists balling into his hair. Not pulling, but stressing with white knuckles. Only when Michael stopped just short of the entrance to the jungle gym did Gregory find his calm again. The last thing he wanted was to be tricked into a party again...
He thought about it for a moment, avoiding eye contact with his guardians. He trusted Michael so much—his word and the word of Freddy and Charlie, too. Gregory eventually nodded his permission, allowing Charlie and Michael to stand by as he attempted to relax. He breathed in a controlled manner, letting go of his hair.
“Stay... Please...” he asked of them, pulling hard at Charlie's heart strings. She decided to sit right where she stood, only a few feet back from Mike as she watched her friend try hard to regain his composure.
“You got it.” Michael parked himself on the cushiony floor as well, observing Gregory while trying not to outright stare. They sat in silence for a good while, the only sounds in the room Michael and Charlie's simulated breathing underneath Gregory's faster inhale and exhale. Only when the boy seemed to relax ever-so-slightly did Michael try and speak again.
“It's... it's okay to be upset about anything, you know,” he began, looking at up Gregory, who didn't seem to want to meet his gaze. “Even if something seems like a stupid thing to be sad or angry about, for people that've led lives like we have... it's not surprising that mundane things can cause a big reaction.”
The traumatic beats of their lives were different, sure, but the result was fundamentally the same: they'd all been through things that no person should be forced to experience and it left them broken in ways that only themselves would truly understand.
“Man, I can't even tell you how many times I've heard a song or seen a fucking t-shirt or something that just totally sets me off,” Mike continued somberly, gaze now far-off and distant. “Sometimes you don't even realize how bad it is until it just... happens. But, honestly, and I'm not just saying this because it's what your 'supposed to say'... it does help to talk about stuff with people you trust.”
Not that Michael had that chance—not until the very end, and even then it was more shouting at Henry's disembodied voice as fire raged around them. Still... it'd felt good to get stuff off his chest.
Gregory finally made himself look at Michael. He knew that his brother had a point.
“It feels so silly... I tried to tell you guys. I-I don't like my birthday,” he replied in his own time, watching as Michael and Charlie sat back to listen to him. Gregory didn't know how much he felt like he could reveal, but he knew he had to tell them something. “So many bad things happened on my birthday—the first one I can actually remember, my parents croaked. O-Or they just, like
abandoned me. I still don’t really know what happened.” Swallowing thickly, Gregory scrunched his knees up to his chest. “I was sent away to live in the foster system. Someone wanted to adopt me super fast, but then they passed on it; I-I never found out why. That happened a couple more times, and then when I finally got adopted
it was by the Smiths. Everything after that was a nightmare.”
Gregory sniffled, unable and unwilling to recount the horrible things he was made to sit and endure at those few homes he had spent his life in. Worst of all was conducted under the roof of the Smith's. Charlie touched her chest, feeling her heart breaking sympathetically for him.
“I'm really sorry, Gregory...” She let her words hang there for a moment, seeing Gregory. “Did... Did you think we were going to let something bad happen to you today? I wouldn't ever let that happen. Promise!”
“I know! I know! That's why it's so stupid that I'm crying! I have a perfect family! S... So why do I still hate that I was even born?!” Gregory snapped, watching as Charlie's lip quivered at his admission.
She didn't have an answer for him, as the awful thing he said made Charlie want to run and scoop him up—but he was far too fragile to chase right now.
“You were hurt too many times,” she answered instead, her voice quiet as she may have understood just a crumb of what was happening beneath the surface. “But don't say things like that now—ALL of us are happy you're in our lives.”
Michael found himself unable to speak as he listened to Gregory's confession. That final question made a familiar tendril of dark self-depreciation wrap around his heart. He could hear Gregory's inner monologue, as it was the same one Michael used to chant into a mirror at nauseam.
Why am I like this?
Why do I act the way I do?
No one's ever going to love me...
So why was I even born?
Furiously, Mike tried to wipe away the tears welling up in his eyes. He wanted to be strong for Gregory—he needed to—but fuck was it hard.
“F-First of all—” Michael began, voice shaky but determined. “—this family is far from perfect. I don't think you could've landed with a more fucked-up one, to be honest... but despite everything that's happened, we get through things together. That's the only way any of us are sitting here right now—because we care about each other. We love each other. A-And... and I know how it feels to hate yourself—”
His voice cracked on the last word, and he had to take a moment to center himself. A few deep breaths in and out, and he gazed back up to Gregory with a renewed light in his eyes.
“But you have so much life ahead of you, Gregory... and that life wouldn't happen if you weren't born to experience it. Our lives as they are now wouldn't be possible without you.” Finally, a soft smile graced Michael's features. “We just want you to feel safe and wanted—no matter what it takes.”
Gregory didn't like seeing Michael cry. Him or Charlie. It only really clicked with him when he realized they were all tearing up about the same thing—the unhappiness that the others felt. Gregory faced towards them now, his knees scrunched to his chest.
“It's hard sometimes...,” Gregory confessed. Charlie was hiding her face, trying to be coy about the tears she was silently shedding, but he knew and wanted to make himself clear. “I trust you guys so much... I'm just afraid someone’s going to take you all away constantly. I wish I knew that you’d always be there for me, but I can't see the future...”
His anxiety came from not knowing what would happen to them next. God forbid someone found out that his family was made of robots and ghosts. He couldn’t keep everyone safe all the time...
Charlie felt his dilemma and related to it all too well. She remembered when the spirits had finally moved on. All but Cassidy and her were left, bound by their unyielding hatred and watching everyone they knew float off to the afterlife or die.
“That's life sometimes... I wish I could see my friends again. B-but sometimes good people are taken away from us. Missing them means that they meant a lot to you,” she said, trying to tell her brother that he wasn't alone. It seemed like he was slowly warming up again.
“Charlie's right,” Michael agreed with a nod, though he didn't want Gregory to dwell on that possibility right now. It was good to acknowledge it, but the kid needed reassurance that at least for the immediate future, no one was going anywhere.
“But hey—not only do you have a huge family now, we're all kind of immortal.” Michael's mouth quirked up in a grin. “No one's going to take us away, and we're certainly not planning to go anywhere for a long, long time. Someone will always be here for you, Gregory.”
Of course the boy had favorites—everyone did. That was just a fact of life. Some people's absence left a little pinprick in your heart, while other's left a gaping hole. Regardless, Michael's point stood firm: Gregory had so many people that cared about him now—ghost, robotic, or something in-between. He'd never be alone again unless he chose to be.
Gregory crawled forth from the tube slide, arms outstretched as he waited for the kind reassurance that only a hug from his siblings could deliver. Charlie stood, making her way over and pulling him into an embrace. She squeezed him tightly and reminded him, same as Michael did: “We love you, and we're never going to let something bad happen to you again.”
When Michael came over to complete the trifecta group hug, Gregory started to loosen up. Okay, so his birthday was sort of a crappy day to deal with—but maybe the three of them could just have fun in the Daycare until he could work up the bravery to walk with them back to the party.
“We can stay here for a little longer, right?” Gregory asked, figuring they wouldn't rush him.
“As long as you want, kid,” Michael replied, ruffling Gregory's hair when they broke apart. He glanced at Charlie with a nervous little laugh. “We might want to call your dad though, if that's okay—you know how he is.”
So worried about you, just like the rest of us—but he loves you just as much, too.
Charlie pulled back, setting Gregory down already on her way to pull out her phone. First off, Freddy needed to know that Gregory was going to be fine. He was caught off-guard, that was all she planned to tell the former bear. It was really up to the kid himself whether or not he wanted to share everything he did with his dad as well.
Gregory used the soft fabric of his Fazwatch to wipe away an errant tear. “Yeah—let's call him. I'll talk to him more at the party.”
After all, they promised that he wasn't mad—that Freddy and the rest of them would always be there, considering their circumstances.
“We could... I don't know... Could we play a little before going back?” Gregory had some nervous energy to work off.
Charlie clicked on Freddy's contact on her phone, touching Michael's arm with her free hand. “You two start playing without me. I'm just going to talk to Freddy for a sec.”
Besides, she knew the boys were itching to roughhouse. It already seemed like it'd been so long since the two hung out alone. Offering Gregory a sweet smile, Charlie held the  line to her ear and walked a short distance away. It only took one ring for Freddy to answer. There was commotion in the background as he picked up the line—what sounded like Monty's raucous laughter and Roxanne's scoffing retaliation to whatever the gator had said.
“Charlie? Have you found him?!” Freddy asked, his tone full of worry.
“He was in the Daycare! No worries. He was just overwhelmed. Party's still on, I think!” Charlie reassured, looking over her shoulder and watching her brothers play. Poor Freddy; they’d gotten him stressed for nothing. “It might take a little bit for him to calm down, but I'll text you when we're on the way back.”
“Of course—he can take all the time he needs,” Freddy replied easily. He wished he could go and provide comfort, but if there was anyone he trusted to do so just as well as him it was Charlie and Michael. There was a softness in Freddy's tone as he added: “Also, tell him that I love him very much.”
Gregory wanted playtime, and that's what he was going to get. Now that he seemed in better spirits, Michael hoped to raise them even more by suddenly snatching him under the arms and dashing towards the ball pit, cackling at the surprised shriek the action brought forth. When they reached the edge Michael threw Gregory as far as he could, putting a hand over his eyes as if to shield them from the sun while he whistled at the airtime his brother got before landing in the rainbow river.
Gregory found himself laughing. It came naturally as Michael picked him up. To be thrown so carefree was one of his favorite things these days. Shrieking on the way down, Gregory sunk under the “water” with a large splash!
“Dude, I don't think I threw you that hard!” Michael laughed, squinting as he searched for his wayward brother.
“Of course I will, Freddy," Charlie encouraged; he was such a kind dad. "We'll see you all later—don’t let the party die!” After saying her goodbyes and hanging up, she came over to see what the fuss was about.
“Oh great. You lost him,” Charlie teased, figuring Gregory was probably just laying very still as a way to coax them into the pit with him.
It nearly worked, too; Charlie was about to fall for whatever little trap their brother set. Not to be outsmarted, she and Michael stood and waited for him to pop his head out.
And they waited.
And waited

***
Gregory sailed in a downwards arc, feeling every shift of the colorful plastic press into the exposed skin on his legs and arms. Laughing and flailing, Gregory was only stunned once when he felt something unexpected as he touched down—
“OW!” Gregory hissed as his watch felt as if it just shocked him, blinding him momentarily from the sharp pain.
Could tears make this thing short-circuit? Damn, it was a good thing he never showered with the toy on his wrist.
“Mike! Charlie!” Gregory shouted, holding his arm as he attempted to stand without using his hands. “I think my watch burned me!”
Gregory flipped his hair, popping his head above the surface to find himself now in a...
Kiddie pool?
Gregory was in the middle of a small, grassy area. Upright with the free wind blowing gently on his face, a horrible wave of confusion and fear gripped him. Suddenly he was alone and in a completely new place, one he was sure he’d never been before. It looked like the backyard of a stranger’s home

But how was this possible? Did he accidentally hit his head from the force of Mike’s throw? Was Gregory really just passed out, slowly suffocating under the rainbow river until his family inevitably fished him out? Slowly, Gregory kicked some of the bouncing plastic away as he fumbled to get free of the knee-high, homemade pool.
“Hello?! Charlie! MIKE!” he shouted, vision blurring with tears again. He must’ve hit his head hard to be dreaming of something so liminal—something he swore that he’d never seen before, yet felt strangely connected to.
“Dad?! WHERE IS EVERYONE?!” Gregory demanded to know, feeling his breathing pick up rapidly as panic took hold of him once more.
This just didn't make sense. When nothing but silence reached him, Gregory clammed up. Maybe it wasn't the best idea to be shouting for help in a random backyard of an unfamiliar house. Gregory carefully dug through the plastic pool, looking for a spot where he could have fallen through. Yet there was no way back. Nothing. No hatch or hole, nor hidden slide leading to this random neighborhood from the familiarity of the Pizzaplex.
When his investigations came up short, Gregory took a moment to steel his nerve. Then, with a deep, determined breath, he walked for the house. Maybe whoever was inside could help him find his family...

The Smiths - “Panic” (1986)
Thirty-eight years ago, on July 21, 1986, “Panic,” the fourteenth single by the Smiths, was released. Musically inspired by T. Rex’s “Metal Guru,” “Panic” was the first Smiths recording to include secondary guitarist Craig Gannon, who had originally been hired to replace bassist Mike Rourke earlier in the year. Bemoaning the state of contemporary music, including the refrain “hang the DJ,” the single would peak at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. Included on the UK compilation The World Won’t Listen and the US compilation Louder Than Bombs, the song was voted Single of the Year in the 86-87 NME readers poll.

Color me curious about if your RGYP series will include elements from the WarioWare/Land series! Don't get me wrong, I love how youve characterized Wario (him being the weird uncle was a nice touch!), but his franchise has a fair lot of interesting characters, adventures and showcases his goofy yet effective abilities (like turning into Springy Wario when he's crushed, Count Wario when he's attacked by bats or his King Dragon hat, the Shoulder Bash, etc)
Given the backstory you devised for him, maybe the WarioWare staff are old workmates of his from his travels. Like he bartended in the lounge Mona was a singer in, he was a DJ in a club and befriended a regular named Jimmy T, he briefly worked as a Lab Assistant with Dr Crygor and Mike, was a sort of uncle-mentor figure to a wayward Ashley etc
Watching the latest WarioWare game just piqued me curiosity is all ^^
What color would you associate 'Curious' with? Hmmmm...
Anywho! To answer you question, yes, I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate more of the WarioWare/Land characters into the YPRG series. I feel that for a series that supposed to be about all of these characters, I've focused a lot on the twins. Which sort of make since, given the situation. But the other brother's have been lacking in background creation.
There are a few character from the WarmWare/Land that I'm trying to integrate in some way. The damage from never playing the games is not fully knowing any of these characters.
So, long story short, yes. XD

Chapters 11 and 12 are live!
🎄🎄🎄🎄
December 24, 1990
Steve, still in his pajama pants and a soft grey sweatshirt, walks into his already occupied kitchen at 8:30am, seeking coffee and maybe a Christmas cookie or two. Nancy and Robin are both fully dressed, slacks and a pastel sweater for Nancy, a t-shirt and flannel over jeans for Robin. The little portable radio on the counter plays softly, “Silver Bells”, Steve thinks.
“Where are you two going so early?” He asks as he fills his mug. He knows it’s only a matter of time before they leave his house for one of their own, and he tries really hard not to think about it. About how everything is changing.
“Karen asked for everyone’s help doing last minute wrapping for the toy drive tonight,” Robin answers. She and Nancy share an affectionate, exasperated glance.
“The other person who volunteered bailed,” Nancy rolls her eyes.
“So, you guys, Mike, and Holly have to pick up the slack?”
“You got it,” Robin pokes him just above his belly button. He swats her away, and they tussle around the kitchen under Nancy’s fond gaze.
“Silver Bells” fades out, replaced by three, reverberating somber guitar chords that make Steve freeze in his tracks. Robin leaps across the kitchen, slamming the radio into the wall in her haste to hit the power button.
“Sorry,” she says, her face is red and he’s not sure if it’s exertion or embarrassment coloring her cheeks.
“It’s fine,” he makes himself say, though his heart races and he’s a little bit dizzy.
Steve hasn’t listened to the radio since July. Not since the night he and Henderson drove home from the drive-in a few towns over and the DJ had said, “Got a new one for ya tonight. Early buzz is calling it the next great break-up anthem,” and those three chords played through the Beemer’s speakers, followed by the hollow rasp of Eddie’s voice. The song that followed, where Eddie tightroped between rage and brokenhearted melancholy, had almost driven Steve off the road. Then the last note growled from Eddie’s lips bit off in an obviously stifled sob, and Steve pulled over, had a full-blown panic attack with Dustin in the passenger’s seat. By the time Steve’s face was dry and his breathing even, Dustin felt comfortable joking, “at least it’s got anthem potential?” to ease the tension. It didn’t make Steve laugh, but he did smile.
Back in the present, he takes a sip of his coffee and grabs a cookie, determined to ignore the worried glances the two women share. He’s fine, though. He just doesn’t like to hear the song unexpectedly, and it’s fine. Normal, really. Nothing at all weird about being the, now internationally reviled, inspiration behind the song that sat at number one on the Top 40 for six weeks.
To show just how regular and fine he is, he asks, “Know when you guys should be getting back?”
Nancy answers, “Everything needs to be at the Community Center by 5, so. Before that.”
“Cool. I think everyone else should start getting in around 3.”
Steve takes a bite of peanut butter cookie, and Nancy ruffles his hair as she passes to the front door. He thinks he’s avoided any heavy scrutiny about the song, but Robin leans down and presses a kiss to his forehead. They’re physically affectionate—he’s one of the few people that Robin allows to touch her—but usually it isn’t gentle kisses on the head unless he’s having an active breakdown. He resists the urge to smack her away for seeing him too clearly. Instead, he wraps an arm around her waist and tugs her close, squeezing his eyes shut as he’s briefly assaulted by all the memories he’s trying not to have.
She doesn’t bother with any platitudes to assure him. Robin fully understands how much it sucks, how bad it hurts, she just hugs him as tightly as she can in her wiry arms. It cheers him up and also doesn’t, because he and Eddie are most definitely over in every way, and that was way before Eddie wrote a song about Steve that Eddie can’t sing without sobbing. So.
Steve’s fine, is the important thing. He can’t listen to the radio anymore, but he’s got plenty of tapes. He can’t talk to his best friend-slash-love of his life anymore, but he can—no, there’s no good way to twist this one. He misses Eddie so much it’s a permanent physical ache in his sternum. But Steve is coping. He is. School is good and his teams are good, and so what if all his kids aside from Erica left for college? It’s fine. He’s fine. Great, really.
