the drinks were flowing and dizzy’s brain had taken it as opportunity to fixate. really, most days made her think of hayley, even though she was trying to work on that forgetting everyone was telling her to do. how could she forget, though, when the fucking breeze would make the trees dance and she’d think of holding her hand? a horrible shift had led to her wishing there was someone to call that wasn’t her sibling. she hated dumping on them, they were too young for it. so she poured misery into alcohol with her co-workers and that led her to this point, phone in hand as she typed and retyped a message.
dizzy: i’m drunk and i just think you should know dizzy: i think about kissing you all the time. even still. even right now.
she hit send without second guessing, figuring she’d sound suave.

Favourite Songs From 2020
My 110 favourite songs of the year - basically one song per artist and then I doubled up on songs from my ten favourite albums of the year - Taylor Swift, Pheobe Bridgers, The Strokes, The Killers, Porridge Radio, The 1975, The Weeknd, Fleet Foxes, Soccer Mommy PUP - rather than do a seperate albums list. So 100 artists total.
It was definitely a year that I listened to songs more than albums. Blame Spotify for shrinking my attention span or the lockdown for pushing me more towards short bursts of pleasure.
I think it was a great year for music though, this list is as strong as any in recent years. Dominated by indie rock for the most part, and in turn as heavy on female led acts as any year, as they have taken over the rock scene (for the better) over the past couple years.
1 - Phoebe Bridgers - Kyoto 2 - King Princess - Ohio 3 - Taylor Swift - exile (feat. Bon Iver) 4 - The Strokes - The Adults Are Talking 5 - U.S. Girls - 4 American Dollars 6 - The Killers - Imploding The Mirage 7 - Caamp - By and By 8 - Nathaniel Rateliff - And It's Still Alright 9 - Porridge Radio - 7 Seconds 10 - The 1975 - If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) 11 - The Strokes - Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus 12 - The Weeknd - Blinding Lights 13 - Bright Eyes - Mariana Trench 14 - The Killers - My Own Soul’s Warning 15 - Mt. Joy - Strangers 16 - Dayglow - Can I Call You Tonight? 17 - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Be Afraid 18 - Phoenix - Identical 19 - Car Seat Headrest - Deadlines (Thoughtful) 20 - The Beths - Dying to Believe

10 Music Videos That Deserved a 2018 VMA Nomination
Tumblr media
The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards airs Sunday, August 20. The award ceremony has been a long-hailed hallmark, celebrating arguably the second-best part of the music landscape, the accompanying visuals. This year’s award ceremony sees some of today’s most popular leading the pack with nominations: Cardi B with 10, the Carters (Beyoncé and Jay-Z) with 8, and Childish Gambino and Drake both with 8 each. While these accolades are without a doubt well-deserved (I mean, is there anyone more deserving of praise than breakout superstar Cardi B or Childish Gambino who has established himself as one of 2018’s most important artists?), every year it feels something is missing.
There are clear snubs to be griped about and artists who are continually overlooked. In the vein of the latter, the 2018 VMAs all too often disregards the memorable visual efforts of lesser known and rising artists. Outside of the “Push Artist of the Year” category, which sees some notable mentions in Grace Vanderwaal, Sigrid, Jessie Reyez, and Hayley Kiyoko, budding artists rarely have a place to shine. So, ahead of the VMAs, we chronicle ten visual feats of the last year that have had an lasting effect on us.
A$AP Rocky – “A$AP Forever”
youtube
While far beyond the scope of a typical Ones To Watch artist, this particular snub cannot be overlooked. The New York-bred rapper has always shown a penchant for the experimental, but his video for “A$AP Forever” sees A$AP Rocky taking this inclination to new hypnotic heights. Rapping over Moby’s classic hit “Porcelain,” A$AP Rocky places the ethereal backing soundtrack to his native New York. Constantly cycling through varying backdrops in dizzying fashion with A$AP Rocky always at the epicenter, the entire video exists in a world all its own–art house meets the streets of rap.
The Blaze – “Heaven”
youtube
This is not the first time we have nor will it be the last time we will praise The Blaze’s undeniable talent for the cinematic. The French duo comprised of cousins Guillaume and Jonathan Alric, both music producers and film directors, make full use of their skill set to deliver exceptionally human works of sonic and visual art. “Heaven” sees The Blaze celebrating themes of human connection, celebration, and dance in four of the most empathic moments of this year.
half•alive – “still feel.”
youtube
Seemingly shot in one brilliant long take, half•alive’s “still feel.” is currently taking the internet by storm. The technical prowess that underlies “still feel.” is deserving of recognition and admiration in and of itself, but that is only one facet of the surreal dreamscape that half•alive bring to life. The changing color backdrops and sparse use of space give “still feel.” an undercurrent of something sinister without sacrificing its infectiousness.
SG Lewis x clairo – “better”
youtube
Nostalgia is in. Bedroom pop sensation clairo and UK producer SG Lewis capitalize on this sentiment in their nostalgia-ridden video for their joint single “better.” Yet more than simply capitalizing on this generation’s fondness of the past, the video is an accurate homage to music videos of the late ‘90s and early aughts–opening music credits and all. it wouldn’t be too hard to imagine SG Lewis and clairo going home with a VMA for this a couple of decades ago.
The Marías – “Only In My Dreams”
youtube
Los Angeles’ sexiest band The Marías has been steadily making a name for themselves with their unique sound that exists outside of a single genre or fixed point in time. Their video “Only In My Dreams,” which was released at the tail end of last year, sees the Los Angeles band delivering the perfect visual accompaniment for their cinematic sound. Slowly tracking principle members María and Josh Conway through captivating landscapes, each and every still from “Only In My Dreams” looks as if it could have been ripped from a cinematic masterpiece.
Aries – “SAYONARA”
youtube
There is little that is known about growing internet sensation Aries but if there is one thing that is for certain it’s that he has an excellent grasp on how to make something both sonic and visually appealing. The internet enigma’s video for “SAYONARA” is the manifestation of Internet culture. Filled with clever editing, eccentric dance moves, Pokémon textboxes, and 8-bit video game graphics if there was an award for embodying today’s culture it would hands down go to Aries.
Tessa Violet – “Crush”
youtube
Tessa Violet originally found her start as YouTube vlogger, and in fitting fashion, she currently has a viral YouTube hit on her hands with the release of her music video for “Crush.” The quirky, upbeat pop song gets an apt visual accompaniment in the entrancingly edited music video. Despite the video consisting solely of Tessa Violet dancing around a grocery store, the perfectly in-time editing details brings the song to new repeat-worthy heights.
Yellow Days – “The Way Things Change”
youtube
UK-based artist George van den Broek, more popular known by the moniker of Yellow Days, is the 18-year-old prodigy whose cult-like following seems to build more and more with each passing day. “The Way Things Change,” a soulful take on indie rock, received an aptly fitting visual accompaniment that begs that question of where a music video begins and ends. A “moving poster,” the video is comprised of over 6000 frames, 400 of which were printed to make one-of-a-kind posters. Equal parts psychedelic trip and brilliant merchandising, “The Way Things Change” is a sight to behold.
HONNE – “Me & You ◑”
youtube
The British downtempo R&B duo has shown a fascination with Asian culture since their inception; their namesake translates to the idea of true feelings and desires in Japanese, which also serves as a fitting description of their music. For their video of “Me & You ◑,” HONNE enlisted South Korean dance group INTRO Dance Studios. The result is a beautifully choreographed number and equally gorgeous tour of South Korea.
Kim Petras – “Heart to Break”
youtube
Not too long ago, before hip-hop reigned supreme, pop ruled over the over the VMAs, and every award ceremony for that matter. Kim Petras’ brand of unapologetic pop feels like a return to form. The music video for her bubblegum pop single “Heart to Break” finds the perfect middle ground between the futuristic, synthetic pop of today and the over-the-top visual set design of the early aughts. The effect is an effervescent blast into the future of pop with a slight tinge of nostalgia.

Imagine Being Stung By A Bee Whilst On Set (v2. Angst)
Words: 1700
Warnings: Swearing, Anaphylactic reaction, Near-Death
No pairings, just some angsty goodness. Version 1 is fluffy and can be found here.
If you’ve read the fluffy version, you’ll notice that the story starts the same, but things start to change after Bob yells “CUT!”
I like filming outside, wish we did this more.
“Dammit Dean, put the knife down,” Sam begged. His older brother had thrown you on the ground roughly and was kneeling over you, knife in his right hand and daggers in his eyes. Sam was being held to the nearby tree by Crowley who looked on with a grin, like the cat that got the milk.
What is that tickle on my bum?
“Do it Dean, end this,” he practically sung. Dean seemed hesitant, which gave you hope, but all hope was immediately gone when he thrust the knife into your gut.
Shit, did something sting me?!
You cried out in pain, tears springing to your eyes instantly.
Fuck, something stung me!!
Your breathing shallowed as you stared into Dean’s eyes, with a look of hurt and betrayal that didn’t penetrate his soulness hide.
… ON MY ASS!!!
“Let’s go Crowley,” Dean said, holstering his knife and fading into nothingness while holding his gaze on your face. You rolled to your side to face Sam, holding your hands to your stomach to try and stop the blood flow even though you knew it was an impossible feat. You heard Crowley disappear also with a whisp of air, and Sam dropped to the ground with an oomf. He was instantly by your side, holding your head up and begging you not to leave him. You continued to cry and gasp in pain, and as the bloodloss became too much your head lolled to the side.
“Hayley? Don’t do this, open your eyes dammit. Hay!” Sam shook you gently, but you gave no response. Your chest ceased its rise and fall, and with it you ceased to exist.
“CUT!” cried Bob. Jared took a hand away to wipe the tears from his eyes before giving you a tight hug. You tried to catch your breath as you wrapped your arm around his back, patting his shoulder.
“Impressive take guys! Don’t think we need to do that again, we got everything we need,” said Bob cheerily. “Take 15!”
Jared let you go and stood up, and before he could offer a hand Jensen came over to pat his on the back and compliment the take. Neither notice you stay on the ground for that moment, your eyes squeezed shut as you tried to concentrate on slowing down your speeding heart.
“Um, guys?” you heard Mark comment, and his gaze moved from them to you pointedly. Jared and Jensen both jumped at the sudden realization you were still on the ground and moved back toward you.
“Oh, sorry Y/N. Great take, I thought the knife got stuck for a second there,” Jensen said lightheartedly, holding out his hand as Jared did to help you up. You stayed on the ground on your back, holding yourself up on your elbows while fighting the dizziness that was creeping in.
“I’m fine,” you gasped, answering the unasked question, and Jared and Jensen looked at each other concerned. Both bent down on bended knee to get a closer look at you, and you felt Jared brush away a few strands of hair from your face which was now covered in a sheen of sweat.
“Shit Y/N, are you sure? You don’t look so good,” he asked worriedly, placing his hand to your forehead.
“I um, I might need some help,” you admitted sluggishly, before your elbows gave out and you fell to the ground, your vision going black.
-----------------------------------
The guys were alarmed when you lost consciousness, both shouting your name as you fell. Jared caught your head and gently laid it on the ground, while Jensen’s fingers pressed against your neck to feel for a pulse.
“Hey, we need a medic over here!” Mark shouted, running over to the first aid trailer to get a team down there.
“Pulse?” Bob asked as he came and knelt down next to you.
“Fast, really fast,” Jensen replied breathless.
“Cummon Y/N, wake up,” Jared begging, tapping your cheek lightly. Your breathing was thready and you were obviously struggling to fill your lungs. The guys gasped when they saw your lips were starting to turn blue.
“Holy fuck! HEY, WE NEED SOMEONE HERE NOW!” Jensen shouted panicked, turning briefly to look for the medic team.
Mark was running back with the first aid crew sprinting ahead of him. They pushed Jensen, Jared and Bob aside as they leant over you to try and find the problem.
“She looks like she’s in anaphylactic shock. Is she allergic to anything?” one of them asked Bob, who shook his head.
“Not that I’m aware of. Guys?”
“She’s never mentioned anything,” Jensen replied, rubbing the back of his neck and holding his other arm on his hip. He was feeling sick just watching you lay there so still and pale. Jared wasn’t fairing much better, he looked like he was about to throw up and was holding his arms across his stomach.
Just as you took your last breath the first aid officer took a plastic tube from his bag and in one swift motion slammed it into your thigh, holding it there while counting under his breath. The entire crew watched on in complete silence while they waited for something to happen.
----------
You woke suddenly, taking a sudden gasp of air when you realized how desperate you were for oxygen. Your head became clearer and it took a moment to realize you were on the ground with Greg from first aid hovering over you. Susan next to him had her fingers on your wrist and appeared to be monitoring your pulse, while simultaneously speaking into her phone asking for an ambulance.
“Thank fuck,” you heard Jensen and Jared say in unison, and you looked up to see their horrified faces looking back at you.
“Y/N? Do you know where you are?” Greg asked you, and you looked at him in confusion.
“I’m on the set. What’s going on?” you asked, surprised by your raspy voice.
“You appear to have had an anaphylactic reaction to something. Do you have any allergies?”
You thought back to the moments leading up to your collapse and realization dawned.
“I didn’t think so. But, um, something stung me I think. Right before I…” you trailed off.
“Where abouts? I’ll need to see,” Greg asked, not noticing your face flush with embarrassment.
“Err.. well, on my, um… rear,” you replied quietly.
Greg smiled softly, understanding your unease, and continued. “No worries, I’ll help you up and we’ll get you back to the first aid trailer to have a look ok? If it was a bee we’ll have to get the stinger out right away.”
You nodded softly, your head pounding, and allowed him to help you stand. When your legs gave out Jared reached out and caught you with lightning speed, and without waiting to ask he scooped you up into his arms.
“What the hell Jared!” you squeaked quietly, surprised by the sudden altitude.
“Just… let me do this,” he said quietly, following Greg back to the trailer with Jensen alongside. You fell silent, realization dawning just how close a call it must have been for this type of reaction, and rested your throbbing head against his chest with a sigh closing your eyes. You could hear the siren in the distance and relaxed with the knowledge it was coming for you.
-----------------------------------
You couldn’t help but fiddle with your wristband. You’d been laying in this bloody hospital bed, in this horrible hospital gown, for hours now and were feeling antsy to get out of there. Greg had accompanied you in the ambulance, however Jared and Jensen had to stay behind to get the final scenes for the day done. Both were pretty angry with that but you understood where Bob was coming from… the show must go on as they say.
As soon as he was satisfied you were going to be ok Greg went back to set, leaving you alone for the last hour and a half waiting for the all-clear from the doctor. You didn’t even have your phone on you, figuring they’d accidently left it in the first aid trailer when you were bustled into the ambulance.
It was about 20 minutes later that there was a soft knock on the door, and you couldn’t help but smile when you saw Jensen and Jared in the doorway looking at you with concern.
“Thank Christ, I was getting bored,” you told them, gingerly sitting yourself up so your back was rested on the pillows. “Wanna sneak me outta here?” you asked with a smile and an eyebrow wiggle. They laughed and each gave you a tight hug before Jensen smacked you on the shoulder.
“Ow, hey! Don’t hurt the invalid!” you dramatically cried out, sticking out you bottom lip for effect.
“Yer well, don’t scare us like that again,” he told you gruffly, but with a hint of a smirk.
“Did you know you were allergic to bees?” Jared asked. You shook your head.
“Not a clue. Never had an allergy in my life. But then, I’ve never been stung before so... yer.”
“I like the get-up,” Jensen said, pointing to your hospital gown as he sat down in a nearby chair.
“It’s nice, right? Think they’ll let me keep it?”
You continued to chat with the boys, feeling much more animated since they’d arrived, and were pleased when the doctor made an appearance to discharge you. Now the proud owner of a pair of crutches, you hobbled out to the waiting cab while Jared and Jensen kept stride with you the whole time. Not an easy feat for two guys with legs as long as palm trees, so you were grateful to them for that.
“Oh, so I get the next few days off by the way,” you told them casually once you were all seated in the cab and headed back to your place.
“What? So, you’re telling me all we need to do for a bit of time off is have a near-death experience?” Jared asked in mock surprise.
“The secret it out. Don’t tell Bob I told you” you respond with a smile and a wink.

What do you get when you bring together a thoroughly brilliant cast of singing, dancing actors, a preternaturally gifted director, and a supremely inspired choreographer? You get a hit, a palpable musical theater hit, and if you want savor the recipe, you’d be well advised to reserve your tickets to The Royal Family of Broadway before the end of its run at the Barrington Stage Company on July 7th.
In 1927, George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber’s play, The Royal Family, a parody of the formidable Barrymore dynasty of actors, opened on Broadway to great success. The play especially skewered brother and sister John Barrymore (“Tony Cavendish”) and Ethel Barrymore (“Julie Cavendish”), and while John Barrymore was reported to find the play amusing, Ethel Barrymore let the press know that she was mightily offended.
Of course, in 1927, theatergoers were very familiar with the Barrymore clan, and much amused by Tony Cavendish’s drinking, womanizing, wildly narcissistic ways. Ethel Barrymore was known as a great actress who was also a beautiful femme fatale who would milk her curtain calls and extend applause by (famously) declaring, “That’s all there is—there isn’t any more!” Prima donna that she was, perhaps she thought that Julie Cavendish was beneath her, or she perhaps she lacked her brother’s self-awareness.
Though the play has seen many revivals, I think it’s fair to say that over the years, it’s become less of a parody and more of a comedy. Contemporary audiences are likely unaware of the Barrymore family (except perhaps for Drew), and I wondered if the musical adaptation would lose much of the bite the play had in its heyday.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
As it turns out, whether or not The Royal Family of Broadway lacks that bite doesn’t matter. The musical is lavishly entertaining, and the characters are very funny, familiar archetypes. Will Swenson is a delicious Tony, all swagger and self-importance. His perfectly executed acrobatics, along with his histrionic machismo, also pay homage to Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn. As Julie, Laura Michelle Kelly is a beautiful, graceful firecracker, confident in her craft, conflicted about her love life. Her singing voice is astonishing in its range and depth, and how I wish she (along with the rest of the cast) hadn’t been mic’d. The amplification in the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage is far too, well, amplified, and as a result I braced myself each time the excellent orchestra began to play, because the force of the sound was ear-splittingly painful. It also affected the dialogue, making the transition from song to speech jarring and difficult to adjust to.
As matriarch Fanny, Harriet Harris is elegant and dignified, with a wicked sense of humor. Alan H. Green, as Julie’s love interest, Gil, has a rich, burnished voice and stellar stage presence. Chip Zien’s Oscar is warm, charming and poignant. Hayley Podschun’s Gwen somehow manages to be at once gossamer and steely, and Arnie Butler and Kathryn Fitzgerald are delightfully silly as Bert and Kitty Dean. A.J. Shively’s Perry shows himself as a delightful surprise–after maintaining an appropriately buttoned-up persona, he reveals some exceptionally good singing and dancing.
And oh, the singing and dancing! The energy of the entire ensemble, which included people of varying ages, shapes, and sizes, would be dizzying if it weren’t so good. Joshua Bergasse’s choreography, and Vadim Feichtner’s musical direction and dance arrangements were original yet evocative, and stunningly executed. Alexander Dodge’s scenic design was a feast for the eyes, as were Alejo Vietti’s glorious costumes.
Rachel Sheinkin (book) and William Finn (music and lyrics) have created a living, breathing play about 1927 show business, and that they and Richard Greenberg have embellished and fortified an important piece of theater history is no small feat. While I would have preferred not to hear a few bits of contemporary vernacular (for example, a song titled “Too Much Drama In My Life,” as well as a line of dialogue, “She keeps me real”), that’s a minor complaint, considering the spectacular whole of this play.
