Diwali Festival Essay
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is a festival of lights that stands for victory of good over evil. It is celebrated in the month of October – November that is also known as the Hindu month of Kartik.
On this day, Rama, along with his wife, Sita and his brother, Lakshmana, had returned to his capital, Ayodhya, after a long exile of fourteen years. It is believed that the people lit oil lamps all along the way to light the royal family’s path in the darkness and distributed sweets among their friends and relatives to celebrate the return of their King- the custom is followed to this day all over India.
On this auspicious day, Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth, is worshiped and traders start the new financial year and open new books of accounts. Hindus get their houses cleaned and painted for the occasion. On the day of the festival, they decorate their houses with fragrant flowers and the women of many houses make a colorful ‘rangoli’ a pretty pattern drawn and filled with different shades of colored powder, at the entrance.
The evening of the Diwali festival is celebrated with a varied display of firecrackers that are supposed to scare away the evil spirits. People wear new clothes and share sweets of different kinds with their guests, friends, neighbors, and relatives. With time, Diwali has gone on to become a national festival and all Indians, irrespective of religion, caste or creed, participate in the merriment that is associated with this feast.
Diwali is celebrated for five days:

Importance of Dhanteras Puja
Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi. Dhanteras is the very first day of the Diwali celebration of five days. Kubera Lakshmi Puja is done on Dhanteras.
Mahalakshmi Kuber Puja is observed on Dhanteras. When the Milky Sea was churned, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the deep ocean, therefore, Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Kubera is worshiped on this auspicious day.
Goddess Lakshmi is known as the Goddess of Wealth and Lord Kubera as the God of Wealth. Lord Kubera is a treasurer of all the Gods. He not only distributes wealth and treasure but also guards and maintains the treasure in the whole universe, therefore, he is famous as Guardian of Wealth. Following two days after Dhantrayodashi, Lakshmi Puja is done on Amavasya.
Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras is done during Sthir Lagna, which means fixed (not moveable) so that Lakshmi Ji will stay in our home. Sthir Lagna is Vrishabha Lagna which mostly overlaps with Pradosh Kaal during Diwali. Pradosh Kaal is considered to be the most significant and effective time for Lakshmi Puja on Dhantrayodashi when Sthir Lagna prevails.
Dhantrayodashi Day is also celebrated as Dhanvantri Jayanti or Dhanwantari Triodasi. Yamandeep ritual is also done on this day. ‘Future-ready’ Industrial Policy to be out in October
The government will shortly announce the new ‘future-ready’ Industrial Policy in October. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) is the nodal body for the new Policy and it is the part of the commerce and industry ministry This policy will suitably incorporate measures to facilitate the use of modern smart technologies such as Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and robotics for advanced manufacturing. The new policy aims at making India a manufacturing hub by promoting ‘Make in India’. Some of the features of the policy:- The policy include increasing the number of global-Indian firms to those in the Fortune-500 category in the long-term, and in the medium-term helping attract $100 billion inward FDI annually and support outward FDI to assert Indian presence in world markets, and addressing the problem of low job creation in the formal sector. Developing alternatives to banks and improving access to capital for MSMEs through ‘Peer to Peer Lending’ and ‘Crowd funding’. Providing a credit rating mechanism for MSMEs to provide them easier access to funds. Addressing the problem of inverted-duty structure and also balancing it against obligations under multilateral or bilateral trade agreements. Studying the impact of automation on jobs and employment, ensuring minimal/zero waste from industrial activities and targeting certain sectors to radically cut emissions. A consultative approach has been taken wherein six thematic focus groups — Manufacturing and MSME; Technology and Innovation; Ease of Doing Business; Infrastructure, Investment, Trade and Fiscal policy; and Skills and employability for the future — and an online survey on the DIPP website are being used to obtain inputs. Background:- Since the last Industrial Policy announced in 1991, India has transformed into one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is now equipped to deploy a different set of ideas and strategies to build a globally competitive Indian industry, it added. The discussion paper said the constraints to industrial growth include inadequate infrastructure, restrictive labour laws, complicated business environment, slow technology adoption, low productivity, challenges for trade including the Indian MSME sector facing tough competition from cheap imports from China and FTA countries, inadequate expenditure on R&D and Innovation. These constraints work in tandem to increase cost of goods and services.
Kudankulam first reactor synchronised with grid
The first reactor of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), which was taken offline four months ago for refuelling-cum-maintenance work, was synchronised with the Southern Grid even as it was generating 300 MW electricity. The first reactor of the KKNPP, a 1,000 MW VVER (water-cooled water-moderated reactor) that belongs to Pressurised Water Reactor category, uses enriched uranium oxide fuel to generate electricity. As per the prescribed guidelines, at the end of a fuel cycle, which approximately lasts for 7,000 hours, the used fuel in the reactor should be replaced with fresh fuel assemblies. For this scheduled activity, the first unit was taken offline on April 13 for the second refuelling outage. The unloading of spent fuels from the reactor core and loading of fresh fuel assemblies were completed with the help of fully automated refuelling equipment. Nearly one-third of the 163 fuel assemblies – 49 – were replaced with fresh ones, and the remaining fuel bundles repositioned for even burning. Besides, various maintenance activities of systems and equipment as mandated by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board were also carried out during this outage. Subsequently, all the necessary tests were conducted and the safety systems tested as per the regulations. As the reactor was functioning well in expected lines, it was synchronised with the Southern Grid.

Ultra-thin carbon nanotubes can separate salt from seawater
Scientists have developed carbon nanotubes over 50,000 times thinner than a human hair which can separate salt from seawater, a technology that may help solve the global water crisis. Increasing demands for fresh water pose a global threat to sustainable development, resulting in water scarcity for four billion people. Current water purification technologies can benefit from the development of membranes with specialised pores that mimic highly efficient and water selective biological proteins. The team found that water permeability in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with diameters of 0.8 nanometre significantly exceeds that of wider carbon nanotubes. The nanotubes, hollow structures made of carbon atoms in a unique arrangement, are more than 50,000 times thinner than a human hair. The super smooth inner surface of the nanotube is responsible for their remarkably high water permeability, while the tiny pore size blocks larger salt ions. The narrow hydrophobic channel forces water to translocate in a single-file arrangement, a phenomenon similar to that found in the most efficient biological water transporters.
