The Great Hall was buzzing with energy, and the magical ambiance of the Yule Ball had everyone dancing, laughing, and mingling. But you had only one focus tonight—Harry Potter, who just happened to be your best friend and the object of your not-so-secret, ridiculously intense feelings.

It didn’t help that he looked so handsome in his dress robes. You could tell he was nervous as he adjusted his glasses for the hundredth time, sneaking glances at you as if you might disappear if he blinked. And, of course, he was completely oblivious to the effect he had on you.

“You’re fidgeting again,” you teased, casting him a sidelong look.

“I’m not fidgeting,” he protested, his cheeks tinging pink. You bit back a grin as he looked away quickly, clearly flustered.

“Sure, Potter. Whatever you say,” you replied, barely concealing the smirk tugging at the corner of your mouth. You’d asked him to the ball on a whim, fully expecting him to stammer his way into an awkward excuse, but he’d surprised you with a bashful smile and a hasty “yes.” Now, watching him beside you, flustered and utterly endearing, you wondered if maybe, just maybe, he might feel the same way.

You excused yourself to grab drinks and returned to find Ron grumbling about Viktor Krum, muttering something about Hermione’s “lack of judgment” and “traitor move.”

“Oh, don’t be such a sore loser,” you said, crossing your arms as you gave Ron a smug look. “It’s not like you had a chance with Hermione when Krum is here anyway.”

Ron’s jaw dropped. “Oi, what’s that supposed to mean? I could take on Krum if I wanted.”

“Of course, Ron, and I’m sure he’d be thrilled to compete with the likes of you,” you shot back, raising an eyebrow. Out of the corner of your eye, you noticed Harry stifling a laugh, his gaze warm and intense as he looked at you. You threw him a playful wink before turning back to Ron.

Ron scoffed, rolling his eyes. “You know, for someone who just danced with Harry here, you sure seem more interested in annoying me.”

“Not everything’s about you, Weasley,” you said, grinning, and nudged his shoulder. “Besides, if I didn’t annoy you, you’d think something was wrong.”

Harry, however, had gone quiet, and when you glanced over, he was staring at you like you’d just bewitched him. Ron seemed to pick up on it, too, his gaze shifting between you and Harry with a smirk tugging at his lips.

“Well, he’s completely hopeless, so that’s my cue to leave,” Ron muttered, clapping Harry on the back before he strolled off, a knowing grin plastered on his face. You shot a look after him, but he was already mingling back into the crowd, leaving you alone with Harry.

Harry looked at you with a mix of awe and nerves, and when he opened his mouth, he squeaked out a barely audible, “Hi.”

“Hello yourself,” you teased, raising an eyebrow. “Something on your mind, Potter?”

“Er—no,” he stammered, his gaze dropping, then darting back to you with a warmth that made your stomach flip. “I mean—maybe?”

It was honestly adorable, the way he struggled to keep his composure, eyes flicking down to your dress before snapping back to your face. You stepped closer, dropping your voice low enough that only he could hear.

“So, what is it, then?” you murmured, giving him a look that was equal parts teasing and daring. “What could possibly have you so distracted?”

He looked away, but not before you caught the telltale blush creeping up his neck. “You, mostly,” he mumbled, barely audible, but you heard it, and your heart practically skipped out of your chest.

You wanted to say something playful, but the honesty in his voice made you pause. You held your breath, waiting for him to continue, as he looked back at you with that intense, earnest expression.

“I don’t want to ruin things,” he said quietly, his voice shaking just a bit. “You’re my best friend. But if I don’t… if I don’t say this, I might explode.”

Your heart pounded in your chest as you leaned in, eyes locked on his. “Then maybe you should say it.”

He exhaled, his gaze flickering between your eyes and your lips. “I’ve been trying to tell myself it’s just friendship, but every time I look at you… I don’t think that anymore.”

For a second, you were stunned into silence. All the teasing, the pent-up frustration, and the glances that lingered just a little too long—all of it had led to this moment. And now here he was, standing right in front of you, confessing exactly what you’d hoped for.

“Well,” you whispered, heart racing, “it’s about time.”

Without another thought, you reached up and pressed your lips to his. He responded instantly, pulling you closer, his hands settling on your waist as if he’d been holding himself back from this for years. The kiss was soft at first, but it quickly grew more intense, your hands tangling in his hair as he deepened the kiss. When you finally pulled back, both breathless, he looked at you with the most awestruck expression you’d ever seen.

“Wow,” he breathed, eyes wide, and you couldn’t help but laugh.

“You’re an absolute idiot, Potter,” you teased, poking his chest. “But I’m glad you finally noticed.”

His grin grew, and he pulled you into another kiss, laughter bubbling up between you both.
