Have you ever been #suckpunched? Well, that’s how I felt when I researched further into the book #ABtoJayZ by @thelittlehomie__ . . . It was like somebody pooped all over a #childhood memory that I really wanted to share with my kids! . . . I love #hiphop! I was raised listening to all types of #music and #hiphopmusic hold a special place in my heart . . . So, after learning that the authors of this book #JessicaChiha and #DannyChiha have continually disrespected that, I just had to share it. . . . It really pains me to type this. It pains me to share this. It pains me to have #childrensbooks undervalued. It pains me to have the hip hop culture undervalues. . . @makiniregaldesigns has outlined the issues with this book and #ontheblog I have outlined ways to fight back against #culturalappropriation #culturalinsensitivity #biogtry and #hate . . . What an amazing read! @joshsundquist told an emotional, yet heart warming tale. I was hooked from beginning to end. I did not want to put this one down. Not only was it just an overall touching story, it gave me a new awareness and understanding of those that are different to me. I think this novel is a side of diversity that needs to be talked about more. Finally! Just 2 days until #diversitydecbingo starts and I'm more than excited 😍 My TBR for it should be up soon, and I already know it's going to be ambitious. I went kind of crazy and bought ALL THE BOOKS. A few of the books I want to read are: - A Taste of Honey by Kai Wilson - The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi - The Rose & the Dagger by Renée Ahdieh - The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini I think the best thing about this is that it'll get people reading more diverse books and hopefully we will all continue to read diverse books and make an effort to seek them out. *Are you joining bingo? "It started with a concern, a care, a worry. It partially had to do with some op-Ed pieces that my father and I wrote in 2014 and published in the New York Times about the need for stories to be told that had been neglected. No one will disagree that there is a need for diversity in children's literature, and a need to respond to the changing demographics of our country and our world. But at the same time, as we look at the statistics, those books are not being published. Young people are increasingly faced with a broadening worlds and we need to provide our children with a framework to navigate it. I want this imprint to build worlds for young people to grow up in.
