content warning: excited disabled person rambling/light hearted
i've recently started watching criminal minds - and by that i mean i watched 5 seasons in like a week - and i need to talk about season 5 reid
because what do you mean mgg (reid's actor) had a knee injury and needed a cane and they wrote it in? what do you mean they were super nice and normal about it? what does it say that this is honestly one of my favorite disability representation in a show? (excluding shows that are made specifically around disability, which will obviously always be top tier)
there's something so beautiful about seeing a character clearly fitted for the actor, and therefore being realistic. reid uses crutches and a brace for a long time, then switches to a cane, eventually switches to no aids. the mentions to the aids are minimal, only when it would logically come up in conversation. when he uses the cane, he can stand up and kinda walk without it but still in fact has it. everyone ever so casually gathers around him when he's sitting down and he adapts everyday activities as well, with no comment from anyone.
i know this post doesn't make sense and i don't care but i'm just honestly so overfilled with joy at seeing the most casual disability representation, specially considering this season is from 2009 like aaaaaa/positive

s13 e1
see, this is exactly what i mean. they killed stephen off and i'm literally more invested in the fact that his wife is played by karen from 911 than his death because i did not know this man
like i liked stephen but i'm not gonna cry about this

season 12, 1 am, rundown rant
what do you mean there are a bunch of people out there who hate the prison reid storyline?? its literally the most interesting multi episode plot we've had in like eight seassons. the only thing that makes me slightly mad about it is that i always felt they handled reid's addiction really badly in s2, kind of just glazing over it, and i thought they were finally going to talk about it more in depth but then they just...didn't and it didn't even feel canonically logical, like it did in s2
i'm already so sad because i know aubrey plaza is only in 4 episodes and this marks 3 but holy shit is that woman talented. honestly, just give her and mgg a recording team and let them make an entire network show where they play rivals, dear god please
i completely agree with other reviews about the mr scratch plot feeling dragged out, specially in the s12 finale, feels like they could have just had a happy finale, with a slight ominous note, no need to immediately jump from a great takedown with cat to a random ass text followed by a car accident? give jane lynch her time to shine dammit
and like don't get me wrong, i appreciate the shemar moore cameo but it felt completely unnecsary, either give us the happy reid reunion AND the mr scratch subplot or don't give us nothing, but just getting one of them feels like a robbery
there were many great single episode plot lines in this season as well, which I feel had been lost in the later seasons in favor of the multi episodes ones. i particularly like that they're back on complicated, multi faceted unsubs. a lot of the latest unsubs felt like the same cookie cutter "middle aged white man with various mental illnesses/family issues" and it felt like the writers were scared to have more "controversial" unsubs like they had in earlier seasons (that's honestly an entirely separate post that is in turn related to a real life conversation i had with a friend about tv shows not knowing how to portray minorities in a realistic and non discriminatory way at the same time)
this season was honestly pretty good, specialy when compared to seasons 9 and 10 but the almost constant turnover of actors made it hard to get emotionally involved, suddenly stephen's friend is dying and it's supposed to be sad but all i can think about is that i'm surprised he's married and has kids bc i literally know nothing about this man to make me feel empathy for him. also i really like luke but the obvious push for him to replace derek, specially in relation to garcia makes me so mad, let him be his own person with his own quirks. tara has never done anything wrong in her life, besides being underdeveloped by the writers, aisha tyler was fighting for her life trying to make her character relatable, and she did a bangup job with what he was given. don't get me started on the rushed hotch removal bc of the thomas gibson issues with a producer or whatever, i swear to god. emily prentiss has also never done anything wrong in her life besides being a punching bag for the writers, and although i agree with the decision of making her the new team leader, it doesn't quite feel like she grew into that role yet, i look forward to seeing her develop in it.
also a ps i didn't want to add but couldn't get out of my head, jj would be so anti abortion guys im not even kidding, this woman's obsession with preserving unborn babies lives is so goddamn prominent for no reason

and if I said s9 of criminal minds is the worst one yet , so what
literally no episode has made me wanna watch it through yet
garcias came close
random ass military propaganda will never live up to 100 sorry not sorry
straight up skipped the one with rossis old sergeant
the season debut was okay, I did gasp at the end of the first episode but no more
strange fruit is overhated. "I don't like the racism" made me think it was gonna be racist, sorry for making you remember white people suck I guess
