1) Technique section:

How was it made?

This film featured tightly synchronized music and sound effects to traditional animation. The sounds were recorded at Cinephone studios in New York, using Pat Power’s Cinephone system (closely based on the Phonofilm). This was not the first cartoon to be synchronized with sound, “but it was the first to attract favorable attention”.

How was it captured?

The dialogue, sound effects, and music had to be recorded all on one track. Any unwanted sounds or mistakes would mean that the whole track would have to be recorded again from the start.  The score was conducted by Carl Edouarde, and the orchestra had to play to visual cues inked onto the cartoon’s print, to play on beat. To finance the whole recording process, Disney had to sell his car in order to pay the musicians.

What materials were used?

Disney and a small staff used public domain tunes and sound effects, and kept the timing with the use of a metronome and markings on film, to develop the soundtrack. This score was then recorded in New York with a small orchestra and a theater conductor. Before the soundtrack was produced, there was also a screening to test the accompaniment of sound to the film, shown to the Disney employees and their wives. The team used a mouth organ, pots and pans, slide whistles, and spittoons to produce the sounds.

What is the short about?

The short is about Mickey who is the first mate to captain Pete, on a steamboat. Mickey likes to goof off a bit and slacks off to have fun, but Pete does not tolerate this, and constantly reminds Mickey of the chores and duties he must fulfill aboard the boat. Minnie later boards the steamboat, but her ukulele and sheet music are eaten up by a goat on the boat. However, this does not faze the two mice, as they crank the goat’s tail like a phonograph, and the tune “Turkey in the Straw” begins to play from the goat’s mouth. Mickey begins using the different objects and even the livestock on the boat as instruments, to play along to the song, but captain Pete catches him goofing off again, and thus sets him off to work to peel potatoes.

This film depicts the main characters: Mickey, Minnie, and Pete.

3) Reception section:

How was it shown?

It was first shown in 1928 at Universal's Colony Theatre, now called The Broadway Theatre,  in New York. It was said to have generated a lot of laughter from the audience in the theatre.

How did you see it?

It was a funny, cute and silly film, featuring Mickey, who seems like a real rapscallion. Though, I didn’t much care for the parts where he harassed the animals on the boat by playing them like instruments, for the sake of music, like when he swung a cat around in the air by its tail.

What was the response at the time? Now? 

The music and sound effects that synced to the animation was hugely successful, and must have amazed and delighted those in the audiences. It was so successful that it led to international fame for Disney and Mickey. Since Steamboat Willie, the film inspired other competitors to not just solely focus on visuals, but to incorporate sound and audio to their productions as well. The only negative response that the film received was the part in the film where Mickey harassed the babies of a nursing sow. It was dubbed inappropriate by television distributors, and in the 1950’s, the scene was removed in later airings of the cartoon. Nowadays, the uncensored versions are accessible online. And while there is still the same negative response, viewers understand that the film was made in the 1920’s and is old-fashioned.

There's no good reason why Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring should have been two films rather than one. They were shot together over the course of seven months, but released separately, Manon following Jean after about three months. Shown together as one film, they would total some 230 minutes -- only a bit longer than Ben-Hur (William Wyler, 1959) at 212 minutes or Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) at 222 minutes. But the length of those films seems consistent with their epic pretensions, whereas Jean/Manon together amount to a domestic melodrama -- an entertaining one, with a beautiful Provençal setting, but far from an epic. Their separate releases feel a bit like a con -- as in economics. Films of that blockbuster length are a drag on the exhibitor, who must schedule fewer showings per day, so it probably made sense to release Jean, which unabashedly announces at the end that it's "part one," to whet an appetite for Manon, whose posters announced it as the second part of Jean de Florette. Voilà! double the box office take. In fact, Manon of the Spring had been filmed before, by Marcel Pagnol in 1952, and it had been a long film, as much as four hours, before being cut by the distributor. Pagnol was so upset by this experience that he turned the screenplay into a novel, L'Eau des Collines, adding the story of Manon's father, Jean, which had been only a backstory in his film. And it's this novel that Claude Berri decided to adapt into his two films. The problem I see, having just watched Berri's films back to back, is that there's not quite enough material for two. Jean de Florette is an overextended prequel, introducing the characters of César Soubeyran (Yves Montand) and his nephew Ugolin (Daniel Auteuil), and their villainous attempt to cut off the water supply to Jean (Gérard Depardieu), the newcomer who inherits the estate they covet. Or perhaps Manon of the Spring is a thinly developed sequel, in which Jean's daughter, Manon (Emmanuelle Béart), avenges her father. If Jean had been trimmed of some of the scenes of Jean raising rabbits and Manon of some of the shots of Manon gamboling with her goats in the hills -- as well as the romantic subplot involving the new village schoolteacher (Hippolyte Girardot) -- both stories could have fitted nicely into one movie. Manon climaxes with a scene in which César learns an uncomfortable truth about Jean's parentage, but Berri and co-screenwriter Gérard Brach drag the film out after that revelation, which should have been left to make its impact. Still, Berri's films have much to recommend them, especially the performances of Montand, Auteuil, and Depardieu (the last is sorely missed in the second film) and the beautiful cinematography of Bruno Nuytten. Jean-Claude Petit's score makes good use of themes from the overture to Giuseppe Verdi's La Forza del Destino.

Another example of Boomer Rock decline in 1973, this album has been much maligned in critics' circles, both in contemporary and recent reviews. As a whole it's hard to disagree... this album is a huge letdown from Exile and is certainly the worst Stones record since Their Satanic Majesties Request from '67. So is it all bad? Not at all, in fact I would say this record is a tad underrated... just a tad. I'll cover the two baddies... first, in what has to be worst album-opener for a major band ever, 'Dancing With Mr. D'... Mr. D is 'drugs' of course, and I think they were on some kind of barbiturate when the recorded this stinker... the melody rarely strays from the dirge of mid-tempo minor key chords, and has a shitty chorus... worst of all is my disappointment, I think. Book-ending this record is the final track 'Star Star' which is actually titled 'Starfucker' but their record distributor forced them to change it. I don't mind cursing in songs, but when that's all the song is about is where I object... Jagger singing 'star fucka star fucka star fucka star' etc... is just embarrassing nowadays; the music itself is some kind of Chuck Berry ripoff; again, a very disappointing album closer. That said, the the innards of this moldy bread sandwich are quite delicious. The two hits from this record are 'Angie' and 'Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)'... the former I will cover next month; the latter we'll cover here because it was not a hit until well into '74, after this blog's completion. 'Heartbreaker' is pretty awesome (and frightening!), as it has this nasty 'wah wah' guitar sound from Mick Taylor throughout... very dark themed lyrics about kids taking heroin, kids getting accidentally shot by cops... it is very mid-1970s.
