Someone said – Traveling is wise men’s addiction. The more you travel, the more you want to do it. Specially when you have a great company.
This time TD was accompanied by his good friend Vikas, his wife Anshika and their little kiddo Ginni. It was time for some fun family travel, more the merrier.
This was a short roadtrip, we were to cover a distance of just about 150 kms. The ride was super kool XUV500.
It was a chilling winter morning. We left from Gurugram at 9 am and took a hault at 10:30 am. We relished nice tandoori stuffed paratha’s and hot tea in a dhaba. There were two little kids and obviously the discussions were focused around them most of the time. Before we could realize we were already near Sariska. We had carefully chosen an accommodation which in itself is a tourist destination. We reached the place called “The Jungle Lap” around 1 pm. Jungle lap is resort right adjacent to Siliserh lake. It has mud hut like accommodation to give you a feeling of village stay.
Mud Hut @ Jungle Lap
But what is special about Jungle lap is the small lake just adjacent to the resort which is infested with around 80+ large crocodiles. When you are in the resorts dining hall you literally have a feeling of having meals along with crocodiles, the lake is this close. There is a protective fencing between the lake and the resort. But the lake is open from three sides and crocodiles are free to come out and move around. You can see the crocodiles sunbathing right from the hut window. After the sunset when its dark, hundred of eyes are visible in the water shining like led lights.
???????????????????????
We had booked a night safari in the leopard zone for which we were to reach the gate of the leopard zone by 5 pm. So we had about 4 hours with us. We had lunch and proceeded to the watch tower which is built in the resort premises. The watch tower offers a great view of the Siliserh lake and the opportunity to click many native and migratory birds.
We reached the Leopard zone gate around 5 pm. Parked our vehicle there and boarded the open gypsy for the safari. The guide first took us to the top of the mountain to show us Bala quila also known as Alwar fort. The 4 level fort built in 1492 is at a height of 1960 feets and has its walls spreading across the Aravalli ranges with total length of about 11 kms. The guide told us that the fort had a impressive history and it is said that no enemy could ever conquer Bala quila. There is a small museum inside the fort. The highlight of the museum is the 1100 year old gold statue of goddess Durga. There is also a device made up of Asta dhatu (8 types of metals), it is said that the king used the device to communicate with the Goddess Durga.
We entered the leopard zone just before dark. There are about 15 leopards in this 50 sq.km zone. We could spot lot of Sambhar and Spotted deers along with peacocks and wild boars. While we were on route 2 going towards Surajkund (800 year old step well inside the Leopard zone) the guide heard a deer’s call from the route 1 area which was almost 1000 feets down the valley. The deer continuously kept calling as the guide asked the driver to steer towards route 1. In another 15 minutes we were in the area from where we were hearing the deer’s call. The driver stopped the gypsy at a particular spot near a small water reservoir as he saw fresh pug marks of the leopard. Leopard had killed a deer a day ago near the reservoir and we could smell the rotten meat in the air. We waited for 5 min and again heard the deer’s call. Guide asked us to keep pin drop silence and keep the camera’s ready. Now we started to hear the leopard’s continuous roar coming from the near by bushes. The guide said that leopard can come out from anywhere soon, probably very near to our gypsy. Our hearts started to pounce as weird thoughts crossed our minds. Suddenly the call from the deer stopped, leopard’s roar was also not audible now. We waited for about another 5 min and then decided to move forward. We again heard the deer’s call at a far distance and the guide said that the leopard is probably gone. While we could not see the leopard but the experience itself was extremely thrilling. We came out of the zone around 8 pm and headed towards our resort. We spent rest of the time in the resort, enjoyed the bonnfire post dinner and played cards till about 3 am. Time and again we discussed about the experience we had today, the mere thought of it made us happy.
Tip: Plan for night leopard safari as very few people know about it and there are significant number of leopard’s in this zone.
Next day we had to go for safari in Sariska’s main tiger zone. Now, this sanctuary is huge and is spread in about 866 sq kms. There are about 14 tigers and 60 leopards in the tiger reserve area which is spread across 273 sq kms. No wonder in such a huge area, with low population of tigers it is extremely difficult to even catch a glimpse of them. We entered the safari around 2 pm and by the time we came out at 5:30 pm we were kind of disappointed and exhausted probably due to the dust and smoke caused by large number of safari vehicles. The guide was not that good too and was talking on his mobile most of the time. But we could spot lots of Deers, Peacocks and Peahens, migratory birds, wild mongoose, Langoors and Crocodiles.
Leopards kill on a tree
On the way back to resort we stopped to buy Milkcake (Mawa) which is a specialty of Alwar. We came back in the resort around 7 pm. We checked out from the resort around 11 am headed to Siliserh lake. Siliserh lake is a beautiful natural lake surrounded by Aravalli mountain range. It is known for it’s wide varieties of birds mostly migratory, water sports like Jet ski, Zorbing and Motor boating. We spent some time here doing boating and clicking some photographs.
Siliserh Lake
We left Sariska around 1 pm and reached back to Gurugram around 5 pm. While we enjoyed each others company a lot and had a great time in “The Jungle Lap” but the highlight of the trip was that one moment when we heard the leopard roar right next to us!
???????????????????????
Sariska: In The Jungle Lap Someone said - Traveling is wise men's addiction. The more you travel, the more you want to do it.
