back on my bullshit (it’s been an hour)

thought that’s been clanking around my brain for a bit abt how the open ended information in dislyte events has the POTENTIAL to be great plot points if treated with just an OUNCE more of consideration

like i think about the event stories all the time (shocker) and what really gets me is just a specific pair of examples of “open ended” going wrong and right

lone star. if i’m being real, half of why i like it so much is nostalgia BUT bias aside, i think lone star was overall a good event, if a little simple compared to later events (but no surprise there). the thing is though, there’s this missed opportunity for SUCH a good parallel in the last act. following her parents’ -and later ray’s- deaths, anita does not waste ANY time, she was up and “i need to find the bastard who did this and put him in the ground” which, while real and valid, garners the equally real and valid response of “no, you’re like eleven, take it down a notch” from ollie. the thing is, that’s EXACTLY what ollie did. there’s no confirmed timeline on gray dust and whatnot (more house ramses lore pretty please) but based on the timeline of the shadow decree forming and drew and laura at the union, it’s safe to assume ollie was like 11-17 ish when his dad was killed. my point being, he was young, he was a kid, he probably had the exact same conversation with drew that he has with anita, except he’s now on the other side of it. the entire point of lone star (as i understood it) was that there may be evil in the world, but that makes it all the more necessary to rely on others and let them rely on you. ollie immediately protesting anita holding the EXACT same mentality that he had should’ve been some kind of realization, however momentary, that just maybe, he was setting himself up to fail by isolating himself in his pursuit of leon. but no. they just kinda like. move on?? anyways i think the main reason anita didn’t become ollie is bc laura was there (go laura!)

anyways, truth unveiled. to this day one of my favorite events, definitely one of the ones that could’ve stood to be 4 or 5 chapters. one of the things i loved so much about it though was that it unintentionally recontextualized basically, why li ling is the way he is. he was a leash kid off the leash until he met yun chuan, who instilled in him the idea of strength and moral responsibility, pretty much changing the course of his life (to the person on here who said mateo is li ling if he never met yun chuan, know that never leaves my head). anyways, he’s learned these important truths of life and his responsibility to other people and literally as SOON as he goes off on his own, BAM yun chuan arrested (vine boom), killed in jail (vine boom). for a crime that?? no one seemed to tell him?? like no wonder he has no trust in authority, it was the justice system’s responsibility to uncover the truth, but instead, an innocent man died for a lie. it’s interesting though, that yun chuan’s guidance was still so influential that it manifested in a li ling with a strong moral code regardless of rules. anyways i am BEGGING on my knees for more information abt the li family and li xiao bc like li xiao advancing in society for the ten years following the incident and then intentionally impeding the investigation continued to reinforce li ling’s idea of authority and justice backed by strength instead of general regulation

remembering Ollie powers mutated

Lone Star Event takes place before story and at the end the doctors (because it’s not a true ending to a dislyte story arc if someone doesn’t end up at the hospital ) stated Ollie’s esper powers mutated and saved him

In storymode he is a stage boss with a completely different typing and set of moves

He still has his old abilities like with his bandages in cutscenes so his mutation probably works like how like Gaius where it just unlocked more of his powers than he initially thought he had rather than it replacing his old abilities

RULER’S LAW:

(SPOILER WARNING:) I will be discussing the story of “Ruler’s Law” now that it is all out, so if you have yet to read up on it, skip this.

Abigail is a very interesting character, but as a written character it is hard to get a feel for what she is like. Since the writers have created a cunning, manipulative, prudent character, it can become hard to define who she is. We can assume she is a clever businesswoman that put her citizens first, or she is a clever businesswoman that played her cards right to remain mayor once again. It’s hard to get a comfortable feel as to what her story will be in the future since at any point the writers can pull a “and it was all part of the plan” sort of thing. I don’t think the writing was bad. Coming from “The Lone Star”, I think this is actually a huge upgrade to the writing. I genuinely enjoyed it, and even now somewhat like Alexa (still hate how she did Aurelius dirty).

Ultimately, for Abigail, I do believe her primary motive was the election. It didn’t matter if she got the weapon power, or if she had to sacrifice it, that was secondary. So, I do like that the whole intro to Abigail was concluded with what we already knew: she was going to win. We knew she would, but we just didn’t know how. Whether she genuinely cares about the citizens and is a changed person is still something that can be a facade. After all, she does want to enforce her military power, and make Grandis a more powerful nation, so the weapon was a perfect thing for her to get her hands on.

A major detail that Luca mentioned was the Esper transformation causes mutations, and changes in the host. This can imply that those who become Espers start to adopt personality traits and mentalities of their respective figure. Much like how Jiang Jiuli in the “Origami Love” events showed to be very passive, but his Esperhood makes him violent, and unstable. Which could explain why some characters behaviours don’t really make sense when you look into their stories. For example, Falken is very stoic, calm, and not very expressive. But his victory animation shows him bending back like he’s insane. Narmer is shown to be very sophisticated, and dignified, but his album artwork 2 shows a more cheeky, playful expression, and a very nonchalant, living-in-the-moment pose. Jiang Man is by far the most affected by her Esperhood (ew) as several of her quotes talk about vengeance, and pain yet has no memory of anything (Meng Po is the goddess of forgetfulness).

I note this because there are several Espers that have really strong resentment to their past. Someone like Catherine being influenced by the goddess of death, and therefore living a memento mori based life can fortify those feelings of wanting nothing but death. It makes me wonder if the Esper transformation makes the existing traumas and ambitions the hosts carry be amplified by the ones who possess them. Someone like Fabrice blessed by Freyr shows a strong resilience to the whole “god of fertility” thing as he never actually seems to settle, and often seems to just enamour women rather than actually commit to anything physical.

Luca really dropped a bomb in terms of Dislyte metaphysics that will either enrich the story, or just be a way for the writers to justify lore contradictions.

My real question though is: WHERE WAS NARMER!? This man studies The Miracle in his sleep, and he was nowhere to be found? He is literally Abigail’s cousin. There’s no way he just slept through this.

silly little essay on the new story mode

literally do not post on here ever but the new dislyte story mode just. i have thoughts and the public shall hear them

lemme preface by saying: i thought it was MOSTLY good. like the majority of it to me was well done and enjoyable, it’s the end that gets me, partially bc What the Fuck but also bc it exemplifies a larger issue i’ve noticed w the stories

suffice to say, unknown collection spoilers from here to “and so anyways”

ok. ok. i see the rationale in the whole twist villain thing HEAR ME OUT

if i had JUST started playing and this was my first exposure to gaius’ character then yeah! its a fun concept, who doesn’t love a good betrayal yk!! but it’s just SO poorly executed it kills me. like it was truly a retcon, the character built up by static shock and the bounties does not at all match the character in unknown collection. perhaps i’d be less appalled by this had they built this up/left hints as they developed him, but they DIDNT. “but that’s what makes him a good twist villain!” he had the potential to be a BETTER twist villain if it became obvious to the players before the characters (dramatic irony my love). furthermore, they didn’t exploit the plausible motivation gaius had (hannah) and instead opted to just steer him in an entirely new direction. there’s mentions of a wish, but they’re not expanded AT ALL. ok hawkmoth go off

and this is all to say, i do not think he should’ve been the twist villain! in fact, i don’t even think hyde should’ve been (wouldn’t be much of a surprise)

this is a half baked thought but i think a much better twist villain would’ve been fu shi. THERE’S a guy w a consistent motivation, but the player actually SEES him sink further and further into depravity to achieve it, like he goes from what, stealing research to human experimentation. i feel like extinction wouldn’t have been that much of a leap

AND SO ANYWAYS

this brings me to the larger issue: continuity. it’s notoriously inconsistent. i fear that they’re not going to extend this storyline going forward in any way it deserves, and that’s disappointing to say the least! a lot of story events open such interesting doors lore-wise but then hang them out to dry. a bunch of the event stories aren’t fully resolved within themselves, and sometimes, in cases like lone star or bloody hunt, it works out fine. but in others, like sea and song, it creates this huge problem and just leaves it hanging there (what is going on w anna guys). i have no eloquent way of saying how come 90% of events aren’t really ever narratively significant again meanwhile there’s FOUR successive accro/bremis events. guys. it leads to a lot of missed opportunity plot wise, and it just kinda saddens me a bit.

all that said, on a positive note, i enjoyed all the cameos!! i loved MC and sachiko’s friendship and idk if i’m just easily entertained but the “gamble for your life” trope being applied to pictionary was so funny to me
