The Dark Narcotics Eating up the Bright Futures

In a recent drug bust in Hyderabad, the Telangana Prohibition and Excise Department (P&E), has indicted more than a hundred students from nearly twenty well-known schools.

In a much-appreciated move, the people from the department worked undercover for nearly a month, and finally have recovered almost 700 dots of LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide) worth Rs. 20 lakh, and 3.5 grams of MDMA (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) worth Rs. 1.4 lakh.

The arrested individuals, Calvin Mascarenhas (28), Md. Abdul Quddus (29), Md Abdul Wahed (20), Kundan Singh (23), Aman Naidu (25), V Nikhil Shetty (23), V Ravi Kiran (24) and Brendon Ben (20), with Mascarenhas and Shetty being at the center of it, have been peddling drugs to minors for quite a while now.

They were tracked down through a WhatsApp message sent by a class IX girl to Shetty, who claimed to want some Ecstasy (MDMA). The message was then sent to Mascarenhas, and it was his arrest that subsequently led to the others’ arrests.

The situation seems quite bad at this point given the amount of drugs recovered by the P&E Department, and the institutions under question aren’t ready to take any responsibility whatsoever.

The drug problem has reached not just schools and colleges but also MNCs, and it’s only because of the department’s competency that the public has gotten to see the bitter truth the city seems to be swimming in.

At a time when there is an information overload on the internet to which these impressionable school-going children have easy access, it comes as quite a shock they aren’t exposed to more responsible ways of dealing with the freedom they’ve been given. Students as young as 13 have been busted, and the department has issued an official statement saying it will not release their names, instead, only notify their parents.

We know the world can be a scary, intimidating place, and it’s sad to see children getting tangled in its dark web so easily. Schools need to step up and take action, hold regular seminars on the ill-effects of drug abuse and have proper counselling sessions in place to help the kids cope with the ever-increasing stress they’re subjected to.

Parents, please reach out. Talk to the children often, and if anything seems amiss, offer help. Make it known to them that you’re there for them to talk to no matter what it might be about. And finally, students, it might not come across as anything new - but think twice, thrice, ten times, about what you’re about to do and about the consequences. If you need help, ASK. It’s really easy to slide downhill, but it’s getting out of there that’s going to be the real task. And know this: Prevention is always better than cure.
