@discoverylover The majority was of the belief that they don't exist, but the ones who do believe were ardent believers.
Adventures in Librarian-ing
Today's big debates in Grade 2 storytime were whether monsters under the bed and ghosts are real.

I would be interested in number 15!
@discoverylover
I hope you wanted an essay in response, because that’s what you’ve gotten, lol.
15) five most influential books over your lifetime.
This is a HARD question to answer, because I’m a voracious reader and books have had a huge impact on me throughout the course of my life.
I’m not going to post my favorite books of all time, because that would be a different list. These are books that, for whatever reason, hit me at the right point in my life when I NEEDED their message, or when they had some sort of profound influence on my life. A large number of these are actually YA fantasy books, since literature has played such a huge role in my life, especially in my developmental years and the years that I was coping with the aftermath of my childhood trauma.
I would say that the first one is hands-down A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle. It was the first fantasy book I ever read. I read it for the first time in like fourth grade, and it blew my mind. I’ve read the entire series, both the Chronos and Kairos storylines literally HUNDREDS of times at this point in my life. When I first read A Wrinkle in Time, it absolutely blew my little brain, and it was my gateway to my deep, abiding love of fantasy as a genre. All of her books had direct influences over my perception of spirituality and overall outlook on life (everything is connected, size doesn’t matter in terms of importance, the smallest things c an affect change in huge, unpredictable ways, and kindness and love can ripple out into the universe. That choosing love and openness and vulnerability is worth it, even if it means you’re going to hurt, even if it means you break your heart open, it’s still worth it. Also, the idea that “nothing Ioved is ever lost or perished”. That, in particular, has been a comfort to me throughout the years.)
Another book, or rather, series, that had a huge impact on me and my outlook on life and my approach to living is the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. I grew up with this series. I started the first book, So You Want to be a Wizard, when I was pretty young, right about the same age as Nita and Kit in book one. I honestly love these books more than I love Harry Potter, which is saying something because I REALLY REALLY REALLY love Harry Potter. These books had a huge influence on my thoughts on resiliency and hope and pushing through fear and hopelessness and fighting for life even, or maybe especially, when things look like they are pointless and hopeless. That fighting for life for life’s sake is worth it, even if you lose. That to fight against entropy and darkness, we literally have to look inside ourselves and find where it lives there, because we all have that darkness inside of ourselves, even if we want to pretend that we don’t. Also, the idea that every single action we do, every single thought we have or thing we say is something that either adds to the entropy, or fights against it. So we have a choice, with everything we do, with every thought that we think, with every word that we speak, and that choice is to fight for life or against it. And we can keep choosing. I want to fight for life as much as possible. If you’re familiar with the term hope punk, these books are SUPER hope punk. Also, some of the main characters experience a loss that I just happened to also have experienced, and their processing that grief and dealing with it has helped me process my own grief and deal with it over the years. As far as I know, this series is still going on, and much like the Harry Potter books, it has gone from a series for kids to a much more young adult or even adult series over the years. I still reread this series a few times every year. I love these characters.
I’m not super into classic literature. I’m a fantasy junkie, so most classic literature is relatively boring for me. That being said, there is one book that I would never have read if it hadn’t been assigned to me my senior year of high school that had a HUGE impact on me, because I NEEDED the message, and I needed it right then. That book is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. To me, the most important idea I took away from that book was the idea that we are not the people that our parents are. Just because we come from something damaged or bad doesn’t mean that we are inherently damaged or bad, and we have a choice for how we respond to things that happen in our lives. I literally needed that message so desperately at that point in my life, and I honestly don’t know if I could have gotten through that year, or even the couple of years following that, without having gotten that message. It was PIVOTAL in my life.
Another book that had a huge impact on me is Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. This book was important to me because a dear friend gave me a copy that he annotated. Like, he scribbled in nearly every margin, telling me things that reminded him of me, or things that he thought about and how he wanted me to think about them, too. To this day it was one of the most amazingly thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received. I can’t separate that book from the experience of reading Zack’s gift. The story itself is sad and bittersweet and poignant. It’s an excellent book in and of itself. I don’t know that I would have ever sought it out had it not been given to me, but it had so much meaning to me because of how it was given to me.
I would say that at this point in my life, The Captive Prince books by CS Pacat have had a big influence on me. I read the books about two years ago and fell into the fandom rabbit hole. These books are not for everyone. They deal with some very heavy subjects that have a lot of fucked up baggage attached to them, and absolutely need content warnings for people who might need content warnings. That being said, the problematic elements of the story are presented and acknowledged as being problematic, and that in and of itself is what the author is exploring. I always feel like I need to make that disclaimer when I mention these stories, because they get a bad rep from people who have never actually read the books. These books get a place on the list because they were the first canonically queer books that I ever really read, and after that, I couldn’t go back.. I’m so tired of queerbaiting in literature and in other media, and getting canon queers who don’t follow the Bury Your Gays trope was so eye – opening and revolutionary for me. These books also hit me hard with this idea that choosing to love someone and be open and vulnerable to love, especially when life has done nothing but teach you that you are putting yourself at risk if you do this and that you feel like you are too intrinsically damaged to ever have anyone love you for who you are… to choose love and take that risk takes an amazing amount of courage. I guess I just feel like, maybe if the character that I’m thinking about could do that, could take that risk, and find love, that maybe, just maybe I can too. And like, this is one that I’m still processing and working on.. I’m not 100% there yet, but the idea has implanted itself into my brain, thanks to these books (and fanfiction set in this universe, I might add.) I’ve also made friends in this fandom community who have been hugely encouraging to me. I’ve started posting fanfiction, and I’m actually developing a writing process and learning how to actually stay focused on a story and how to keep working on it, thanks entirely to the support of fandom friends I’ve made on Tumblr. 6 don’t think I ever would have really pushed myself to keep writing and trying without these books, and through them, these friends.
So there ya go! My top five most influential books.

@discoverylover did you know about this?
it is really cool that there is now an official maori word for autism, created with input from autistic maoris, and it was specifically coined to be nonjudgmental
quote from article:
“In my experience, people with autism tend to have their own timing, spacing, pacing and life-rhythm, so I interpreted autism as ‘takiwatanga’, meaning ‘his or her own time and space’,” [Keri Opai] told government-funded Maori Television.
