Brews with a View: 8 Driftless Region Locations to Experience Both Quality Recreation and Beer

The Driftless Region is home to some of the most unique land forms in the country which gives itself to mind-blowing scenery. However, the beauty of the Driftless is largely a kept secret from most, even those who live near. Unique and beautiful can also be said about the craft breweries that inhabit the majestic area, and the beer isn’t half bad either! You will find yourself experiencing great outdoor fun and quality beer in these 8 Driftless locations.

1.) La Crosse, Wisconsin

In search of endless hours of outdoor fun? What about ending the day with a refreshing, cold brew? Few know better than La Crosse. Start the day climbing to the top of Grand Dad’s Bluff featured towering over the city in the image above. If that’s not your style, look to the Mississippi River. The Mississippi offers several water-related activities such as fishing, kayaking, camping, or simply chilling on the beach. Later in the day make your way to the Pearl Street or Turtle Stack Breweries to indulge in their tasty craft beverages. Beyond craft breweries, La Crosse is home to a lively downtown that is sure to entertain.

2.) Winona, Minnesota

Travel 30 minutes North of La Crosse and you will find yourself in a town much like it – Winona, Minnesota. Here you will again find steep bluffs perfect for hiking and rivers made to be fished and swam in. Much like La Crosse, it has a historic downtown which complements the elegance of the nature around it. It is also a town that knows a thing or two about beer, as much as it pains a Wisconsinite as myself to say it. One Winonan brewery that stands out is Island City Brewing located in the heart of the city’s downtown. The prime location gives you and friends easy access to explore more of Winona.

3.) Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin

Let’s be honest, it’s hard to resist a “Leinie” let alone visiting the place that makes these heavenly beverages. The beautiful taste of a Leinenkugel beer is also reflected in the nature that surrounds Chippewa Falls. Take in the charm of the land by biking or hiking the Chippewa River State Trail. The trail is countless miles long and even extends to Eau Claire. At the end of the night, relax with a glass of wine in a soothing atmosphere at the River Bend Vineyard & Winery if beer isn’t on your menu.

4.) Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

The awe-inspiring sandstone cliffs of the Wisconsin River is as captivating as the amusement that can be found within nearby Wisconsin Dells. Whether you experience the river’s serenity through boat, kayak, or even one of Wisconsin Dell’s famous amphibian vehicle rides, you’d be glad you came. If the weather isn’t going in your favor, the town is sure to please with its endless choices of amusement. Rain or shine be sure to make time for the Wisconsin Dell’s Brewery located just outside of the city in Lake Delton to fully enjoy your experience.

5.) Potosi, Wisconsin

Potosi, Wisconsin. A hometown hero of mine in this list, or a near-hometown hero of mine if you will. Located on the Mississippi River in the southern end of the Driftless, is a town much like other river towns of it’s kind. There’s several opportunities for water-related outdoor activities and miles of countless bluffs to scale. Potosi is also known for it’s mining tunnels, if spelunking is in your interest. Just below the mines is the historic Potosi Brewery, which is credited as the National Beer Museum (who says you can’t learn history while drinking?!) and one of my favorite Wisconsin craft beers – “Good ol’ Potosi”.

6.) Eau Claire, Wisconsin

If you don’t want to venture too far out into wilderness, Eau Claire is for you. Eau Claire has several beautiful natural spaces throughout it, one of these places being Carson Park. The park includes several historical buildings as well athletic fields if you wish to catch a game later in the evening. Another, but much more hidden, natural area within Eau Claire is Lowes Creek County park which beholds a great deal of hiking trails. Make your way down to Lazy Monk Brewing in the heart of Eau Claire to have some fine craft brews on the Chippewa River.

7.) Menomonie, Wisconsin

Be immersed in the memorizing, thick forest of the Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area of Menomonie. As the town lay just on the edge of the Driftless Region, the area gives way to gentle rolling hills making it ideal for visitors looking for a casual hiking experience. The land also features a fire tower which allows hikers to observe the rolling hills for miles. Keeping on the finer side of things, Cottage Winery and Vineyard can be found outside of Menominee. The cottage grows their own grapes that is used in their wines. Besides wine, another high-quality drinking destination can be found at Lucette Brewing near downtown Menomonie.

8.) River Falls, Wisconsin

You don’t have to be able to pronounce it but kayaking the Kinnikinic River is a must when visiting River Falls. The “Kinni”, as it is referred to, is 22 miles long which equates out to around a four-hour trip of endless breathtaking scenery. For trout anglers, this fishing destination is a dream as the river supports populations of brown trout. Prefer to stay on foot? The Kinnikinic State park has ideal hiking trails that lead to a nicely, maintained beach on the St. Croix River. For those who do not wish for a long journey from trail to tap, the Swinging Bridge Brewery is a great option. It is situated near a fantasy-like wooden footbridge (hence the brewery name) that leads to Glen Park. The question remains; what was more carefully crafted, the bridge or the beer?
