☘️🥃 My Favo(u)rite Irish with Pat Burke & Paddy Irish Whiskey - a very, very special bottle!
As part of the "My Favo(u)rite Irish..." series, I got to chat with Pat Burke, Oakland born and raised of Irish descent who traces his lineage back to Cork and Limerick.
We talked about Pat, his reputation as a world-class barbecuer, his visits to Ireland over the years, and of course, his Favo(u)rite Irish Whiskey, which is a very, very special bottle of Paddy Irish Whiskey that Pat bought on a trip to Ireland back in 1984, yes 1984!

You’ll probably find Jamesons in every bar and liquor store the length and breadth of America. In 2021 alone it sold over 4 million cases in the US and is the top-selling Irish Whiskey in the world. Jameson is the Irish Whiskey brand that was backed by Irish Distillers/Pernod Ricard back in the day when the Irish Whiskey industry was on its knees. And what a success it has been.
There are now a handful of spin-offs to the brand including Black Barrel, The Caskmates Series (IPA & Stout editions), Cold Brew, Jameson 18 Years, the new canned Jameson, Ginger, and Lime, and the recently launched Orange.
Like so much of Irish Whiskey history, there are plenty of tales attached to Jameson Irish Whiskey and we’re sharing some of them below along with some facts to help you out at your next Trivia Night/Pub Quiz.
Fun Fact #1 - John Jameson (1740-1823) was born in the town of Alloa, near Stirling in Scotland, and lived to the ripe old age of 83.
Fun Fact #2 - In 1768 Jameson married Margaret Haig (1753-1815), daughter of the famed Scottish distiller John Haig, and the couple had 16 children - perfectly divided - eight girls and eight boys!
Fun Fact #3 - Jameson was the great-grandfather of the Italian Nobel Prize-winning inventor of the radio, Marconi. The daughter of Jameson’s fourth son, Andrew, was Marconi’s grandfather, as Andrew’s daughter Annie Jameson was Marconi’s ma!
Fun Fact #4 - Jameson bought his distillery in Bow Street in Dublin in 1780 and for many, many years Jameson Irish Whiskey was a “Dublin Whiskey.” However, Jameson has been distilled since 1971 at Midleton, Co. Cork. This happened as a result of efforts to save the Irish Whiskey industry by moving the production of all of the Irish Distillers brands at the time, to a site with room for expansion.
Fun Fact #5 - Jameson Irish Whiskey is the top-selling Irish Whiskey in the world. In 2021 it sold 8.6million cases globally with just over 4million (4.05million) of those being sold in the US.

🍑 Inspired by a plethora of stone fruit in our garden and in our neighbo(u)rs garden this summer I came up with the Summer Stone Fruit Sensation that uses Poitín as the main ingredient. For those of you unfamiliar with Poitín it's essentially Irish moonshine, which was re-legalized in 1997, and I use the Mad March Hare brand - triple distilled and made from 100% malted barley. Simple Syrup/Homemade Meyer Lemon-cello 2 fl. oz. / 60ml. Fresh Lemon Juice 5 Drops of Lemon Bitters 5 Drops of Lime Bitters Stone Fruit - Apricot/Nectarine/Peach/Plum 1 Can Pineapple Spindrift Wedge/Slice Fruit to Garnish As Required Ice INSTRUCTIONS - Get It Made -Slice Stone Fruit, Remove Stone, and add to your cocktail shaker -Muddle Stone Fruit in your cocktail shaker -Add Mad March Hare Irish Poitín to your cocktail shaker -Add Apricot Brandy -Add Simple Syrup/Homemade Limoncello -Add Fresh Lemon Juice -Dab or drop in the Lemon Bitters (5 Drops) -Dab or drop in the Lime Bitters (5 Drops) -Fill your cocktail shaker with the desired amount of ice cubes -Pop on the lid and shake well to combine -Strain into your serving glass over desired ice cube(s) -Top with Pineapple Spindrift -Optional - Stir gently to mix everything together -Garnish with a wedge, slice, or half-slice of Stone Fruit -Sip and Enjoy…Sláinte!

It's a big week for golf next week, and also a big one for us personally. My golf-mad son works for the Barracuda Championship and in his hono(u)r I created the "Long Drive of the First Tee" cocktail, a play on the Long Island Iced Tea that's often served before social golf outings! My version also pays homage to my own golfing past having played many of the courses in the Dublin/Wicklow area near the family home over the years. So in my Long Drive of the First Tee I've included Teeling Whiskey Single Grain Irish Whiskey (46% abv) alongside Glendalough Mountain Strength Poitin (55% abv) for that kick that the LIIT is famed for! Sláinte, Fore, and drink and golf responsibly! More details with a printable recipe at THIS LINK INGREDIENTS - Get It Ready 2 fl. oz./60ml. Teeling Single Grain Irish Whiskey 2 fl. oz./60ml. LIQUOR STORES IN BEND OREGON
We were on an epic 6 state roadtrip recently and spent a few days in one of our favo(u)rite places, Bend in Central Oregon. And given my newfound passion for Irish Whiskey, I took a jaunt around a few of the liquor stores in town!
My credit card wept, but my heart was full of joy with plenty to choose from at Newport Ave. Market, Trailhead Liquor, and Giorgios West Bend including a nice showing from Hyde, Clonakilty, and Silkie plus some top-shelf beauties!
READ ALL ABOUT IT AT THE LINK HERE
There are some tips on coffee, food, walking, and beer too and remember that in Oregon there's no State Sales Tax...
