The class fantasies of the Fighter and The Monk, when you strip out the Western/Eastern stuff is more or less the exact same, except the Monk is a bit more magical.

Individuals who through hard work and dedication have mastered weaponry and combat such that they are essentially weapons unto themselves.

Most differences come down to aesthetics, spirituality, and the fact that I can't fucking wield large weapons (that is to say, weapons with the heavy and special properties) as a monk.

And the fact that monk fans embrace the fact that in order to actually compete with casters ya gotta incorporate (some) magic into the fantasy.
