How Voltron let this lesbian down
I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this season, but there are a lot of other people who can organise these same thoughts far more eloquently than I can, so I’ll keep it focused on one subject.
I am a young ace lesbian, and season 7 seriously let me down. Believe me when I’ve say I’ve watched a lot of shows, and seen all kinds of LGBT rep, good and bad. Mostly bad. I’m so used to not even having any good LGBT rep that when I started Voltron I certainly didn’t have high hopes. And if it wasn’t for the cast of Voltron, right now I would be at peace with the lack of rep, because it just seems like the kind of show that would neglect it. I never had any real hope for Klance, even though I ship it, so I can’t say the show itsself let me down.
Now, as for why I’m really disappointed: the cast. Disclaimer: I love and support every single person behind Voltron, but this doesn’t mean I’m happy with them. The cast (*cough* Jeremy *cough*) did a really fantastic job of leading us on about Klance, and they made a huge deal about this LGBT rep we were supposed to be happy about. Of course, the VAs have no input in what actually happens in the show (except for what Bex did, all hail Bex, monarch of getting us what little rep we actually got), so all in all I’m not super disappointed about Klance. Lauren has said from the start that it was never going to happen anyway.
But the real stinger here is Shadam. Let me tell you how hyped I was for this rep, such a fantastically diverse couple that could’ve even rivalled Steven Universe. And then they just... killed him off. Pointlessly. Shiro’s reaction was underwhelming to say the least. And for casual fans watching voltron, who haven’t heard that Shiro and Adam were lovers, I’m pretty sure they just think they were roommates or besties or something. They did nothing to make the representation explicit, and cowardly killed off 1/2 of the rep so they wouldn’t have to develop it in any way. The Shadam situation is as bad as JK saying Dumbledore was gay and then. Nothing happening. *Sips tea*
Again, I would be at peace with this, if it wasn’t for LM, JDS, the VAs etc telling us we’d ‘be happy’ and overhyping this shitty rep.
As for the forced hetero ships on the horizon.... I don’t even want to talk about that.
Well this was super ramble-y and confusing and longer than I intended but if you want LGBT rep from a children’s show, I highly recommend you check out Steven Universe (which has beautiful characters, diversity, rep, and is very aesthetic). And for those of you leaving the Voltron fandom, I don’t blame you, and hopefully in the future we can find a show that portrays our community accurately and properly.
