Dischidia platyphylla is a tropical epiphytic vine native to the Philippines. This photo shows the underside of the leaves with its adventitious roots that help it cling to trees. The leaves form a protective shelter for ants that aid the plant in defense, pollination and seed dispersal. #Dischidiaplatyphylla #Dischidia #platyphylla #CUgreenhouse (at CU Greenhouse) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmjj4UlLjuX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This is a Dischidia platyphylla - an epiphyte frpm the Philippines, which forms a really interesting symbiosis with ants. Its leaves provide natural hides for the ants and are evolved to take up nutrients from their waste.
I bought this one for my dad's nameday.

Dischidia oiantha: A Unique Epiphytic Plant with Captivating Beauty
Dischidia oiantha, also known as "String of Nickels," is a remarkable plant that boasts breathtaking beauty and intriguing growth habits. This epiphytic plant, which belongs to the Apocynaceae family, is native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and is renowned for its unique appearance and captivating features.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Dischidia oiantha is its leaves. The leaves are succulent, glossy, and round, resembling small coins or nickels, hence its common name "String of Nickels." The leaves are typically arranged in opposite pairs along the trailing stems, and they can range in color from vibrant green to a stunning silver-gray, depending on the lighting conditions. The silver-gray leaves are covered in tiny, silvery hairs, which give them a velvety texture and make them glisten in the sunlight, adding to their allure.
Apart from its leaves, Dischidia oiantha also exhibits a fascinating growth habit that sets it apart from other plants. In its natural habitat, this epiphytic plant typically grows on the branches of trees, using them as a host for support. The stems of Dischidia oiantha are slender and trailing, and they produce aerial roots that attach themselves to the host tree and absorb moisture and nutrients from the air and rain. These aerial roots are covered in a spongy layer called a velamen, which aids in water and nutrient absorption while also providing some protection against desiccation.
The flowers of Dischidia oiantha are another intriguing aspect of this unique plant. Although small and inconspicuous, the flowers exhibit a distinctive structure. The flowers are urn-shaped with a small opening at the top, covered by a lid-like structure called an operculum. When the flower is ready for pollination, the operculum opens, revealing a cluster of tiny flowers inside. The flowers are typically greenish-yellow in color and emit a sweet scent to attract pollinators like ants and flies.
Dischidia oiantha has gained popularity among plant enthusiasts and collectors due to its striking appearance and unique growth habits. It is often grown as a houseplant in terrariums or hanging baskets, where its trailing stems and silver-gray leaves create a stunning visual display. It is also utilized in vertical gardens or living walls, where its epiphytic nature allows it to thrive without soil, adding a touch of natural beauty to indoor spaces.
Proper care for Dischidia oiantha can be a bit challenging, as it requires specific conditions to flourish. It prefers bright, indirect light and should be shielded from direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf scorching. High humidity is also crucial for its well-being, which can be achieved through regular misting or by placing the plant in a terrarium or a humid environment. Dischidia oiantha should be potted in a well-draining mix that mimics its natural epiphytic habitat, and it should be allowed to slightly dry out between waterings.
In conclusion, Dischidia oiantha is an extraordinary epiphytic plant with striking beauty and captivating features. Its succulent, round leaves, trailing stems, and unique growth habits make it a truly unique addition to any indoor garden. With proper care, this
fascinating plant can thrive and become a prized possession for plant enthusiasts seeking something truly exceptional. Whether grown in a terrarium, hanging basket, or living wall, Dischidia oiantha is sure to mesmerize and delight anyone who encounters its remarkable beauty.

closed starter for @rubrumales
as much as the angel liked the physicality of garden work, the world of flora was so fascinating to him he could talk about it for hours. at times, under the identity of professor emmanuel (which no one ever seemed to question for some reason), he would do guided tours around the botanical gardens simply for the joy of it. he was just about getting finished with another one.
"last but not least. this is a dischidia, also known as ant plant. it lives in symbiosis with ants, allowing them shelter within its leaves, and they in return provide organic matter for her to prosper. that includes dead ants themselves, sometimes. it's... kind of brutal, but quite beautiful, really," he smiled, looking around at the handful of people listening. "thank you for your attention. come around again. if you have any questions, i will be here."

The bathroom plants have spider mites 🥲
I spent the majority of my day yesterday spraying everything with alcohol and some Captain Jack's when the alcohol ran out. I washed the 3 macrame hangers, all of the trays and most of the cache pots got rinsed or cleaned out with alcohol, and all of the shelves got sprayed and wiped. I even took the blade out of my work box cutter to scrape some of the wall and window of the scale (I think). There's still a treatment or two I'll need to do, unfortunately. Since I'll have to do it again tomorrow I'll give everything systemic so I hopefully won't have to worry about it as much.
I already gave it to: cissus quadrangularis, dischidia ovata, and dischidia geri, epipremnum aureum, monstera Peru, philodendrons (Florida green, giganteum, rugosum, Jerry Horne, bipennifolium)
So I got everything in the window, basically. I'm not looking forward to doing it for the other shelves but it'll be fine.
