Sculptor Chaim Gross, New York City, November 11, 1988.  Allen in an appreciation published in the Provincetown Arts wrote:  “The son of a timber appraiser, following his father to the timber yards in remote Galicia, in the forests of the Carpathian Mountains, growing up watching the local peasant families whittling figures in wood, it is perhaps not so surprising that he would develop a particular affinity for direct wood carving. Chaim was a master in stone, in bronze, but it was wood that ultimately held the greatest appeal. His re-discovery of wood, his early expressionistic carvings, in the late 'twenties and early 'thirties, those airy joyful human bodies, acrobats and tight rope dances, are now recognized as seminal in the history of American art. He almost single-handedly revived the form. No one else was doing such work at the time. SINGLE FORM (Nocturne) by Dame Barbara Hepworth: this Irish black marble sculpture was made in 1968. On first glance it looks like a very simple flame-like form, but it has tremendous complexity: two ‘sharp’ edges and two ‘soft’ and of course the hole is not straight through, but instead a curved opening so that it reveals itself and the light falls on the polished marble faces and catches in different ways. She viewed piercing through the centre of a stone as ‘a fusion of experience and myth.’ Hepworth apparently created this sculpture following a conversation with the collector Walter Hussey, Dean of Chichester Cathedral, about what he looked for in a sculpture. I rather like how it looks in the panelled interior of @pallanthousegallery with the light bouncing off its facets, like encountering it in a collector’s home.
