"[The] strangeness of Russian Ark, its connoisseurship of time, is an accurate description of what it feels like to visit the [Imperial Hermitage Museum]. All great old museums are places where time stretches, floats, accumulates dust, even has an odour (in Sokurov's film, people sniff paintings). You lose yourself, cut free from linear time into something more oceanic. The Hermitage has the same historical thickness that all museums have, but to an infinitely more fermented degree." Russian Ark (2002) dir. Alexander Sokurov. 7.6/10
What an interesting perspective. It is kinda like the speaker is me, the viewer.
I want to know what lens they used or what techniques they applied to make the scenery so expansive at times.
They put in so much to make the scenery so amazing, but it is so irrelevant to any plot structure in my head. I’m only trying to figure out the identity of the faceless speaker.
The music, the art, the history, and the costumes all combined so wonderfully together to make the entire one shot sequence a beautiful dance-like play. It was quite beautiful.
