While I wait for my next Vacation in less than a week I am going to start moving some of my journal entries from the journals I have handwritten in to this blog to catch up on my adventures.

In May 2024 my family went on a Greek Cruise I had been on one cruise before when i was 19 to Bermuda with my dad and brother.

This was my first Virgin Voyages Cruise. All I knew about the the cruise line was that is was adults only and a bit more risqué than other cruise line. My sister had been on a handful of Virgin Voyages and said we had to go on one for my Mother's upcoming milestone birthday.

One thing about planning vacations with my family is we get very serious about our itinerary. I'm not saying we never get to relax but we plan rest days into our Itineraries. We typically schedule a time to meet up and my sister will put together a power point of our vacation to make choices on what we do based on a vote. As we are all adults with our own lives we find these meetings really bring us together and hype up our future trip.

This vacation was no different as soon as we paid for our cruise it seemed like we were sitting in my sisters dining room looking at all the excursions that interested us. For my then Fiancé now husband this was a big trip for him. first time out of the country, farthest he had been from home, going somewhere he did not speak the language nor could he even try to read it, his first time travelling with my family, and his first cruise.

Serbian prosecutors have charged 19 people including two high profile defendants in relation to two execution-style gun attacks carried out in Greece in 2020.   

Those indicted for the shootings, which left four dead, include Darko Saric, a Serbian citizen born in Montenegro previously convicted of drug trafficking, and Veljko Belivuk, leader of the Janjicari, [Janissaries] a notorious so-called football fan group with links to state officials and the security guard industry. Both are currently on trial for multiple criminal acts.

“The defendants Veljko Belivuk and Darko Saric, as well as Radoje Zvicer, a citizen of the Republic of Montenegro against whom proceedings are being conducted in Greece for these criminal acts, have been identified as organisers”, Serbia’s Prosecutor Office for Organised Crime said in press release on Thursday. Seven people will be charged in absentia as part of the indictment, a joint investigation carried out by judicial authorities in Serbia and Greece. 

In July 2020, according to Greek police, two Montenegrins were killed in a villa in Halikouna Beach on the island of Corfu. The victims, Alan Kozar and Damir Hadzic, had multiple gunshot wounds. During the autopsy, 32 shell casings, seven fireballs and two metal fragments were collected. Greek police told BIRN in March they arrested one Albanian citizen over alleged involvement in the crime.

In January 2020 another two Montenegrin citizens, Stevan Stamatovic and Igor Dedovic, both 43, were shot dead with more than 20 bullets in front of children while dining at a well-known Greek tavern in Athens. 

Both murders are suspected to be part of a bloody war between two notorious Montenegrin gangs, the Kavac and Skaljari, which has left around 100 people dead across Europe in the past decade. Saric, Belivuk and Zvicer are suspected to be part of the Kavac clan. 

Saric is currently on trial in Serbia together with 14 others accused of overseeing a group that plotted to kill a witness involved in a case against the convicted drug trafficker and pressured police officers for confidential information.

In 2022, Saric was sentenced to 14 years on an earlier charge of smuggling 5.7 tons of cocaine from South America to Western Europe during 2008 and 2009. There is also an ongoing trial against him for laundering at least 20 million euros acquired through the sale of narcotics.

Veljko Belivuk is known as “Velja Nevolja” (“Velja the Trouble”), Together with other Janjicari members, he is standing trial for multiple criminal acts, including aggravated murder, kidnapping, illicit possession of weapons and explosives and drug trafficking.

Radoje Zvicer is one of the alleged heads of the Kavac drug gang, indicted for creating a criminal organisation and for murdering two members of the rival Skaljari drug gang.

Since we stayed in an apartment complex in the south most of the listed restaurants are in that area. We had agreed before that we would try to eat in our area as often as possible, so that everyone can drink and no driving, or as little as possible, would be needed. To get through a week in Vitalades without driving somewhere for dinner turned out to be impossible. The village has two roads…

Cruises - a compromise when traveling

My wife has suffered from multiple sclerosis (MS) for over 15 years. Thanks to good medication management, a mindful lifestyle, a lot of sports and a fantastic physiotherapist, she was able to not only stabilize the course of the disease, but even improve it. She was also lucky that her illness didn't take the serious course it usually does for others. However, this illness still affects the way we travel. You have to plan trips with lots of opportunities for breaks. Traveling by ship is ideal: you are taken from A to B while sleeping - quite stress-free. Over the years we have also gone through a learning process in which the general boundaries have been constantly expanded. We now know that a 2-weeks, well-planned tour will push her body to the limit of stress, but she can definitely „survive“ such a trip.

Our first cruise was deliberately on a smaller ship because we are not big fans of crowds. We didn't want any rigid etiquette when it came to dining, but wanted to take a more „relaxed approach“ - so we chose an organizer who offered buffet restaurants on the ship. Most cruise lines celebrate abundance when it comes to food. An Asian service worker once shouted the following to the crowd streaming in as the restaurant opened: “Attack!” One wonders what kind of human image these people take with them from us when they return to their home countries. Wherever large crowds gather, the different patterns of human behavior can be observed quite well. This is often not particularly flattering for our species when egoism and vanity come to the fore. We have now gone on 5 cruises and are realizing more and more that this way of traveling is not necessarily the right thing for us. It‘s over for now.

Philip Mountbatten; 10 June 1921– 9 April 2021 , was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. As such, he was consort of the British monarch from Elizabeth's accession on 6 February 1952 until his death in 2021, making him the longest-serving royal consort in history.

Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born on the dining room table in Mon Repos, Royal family’s summer villa on the Greek island of Corfu, on 10 June 1921.He was the only son and fifth and final child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.A member of the House of Glücksburg, the ruling house of Denmark, he was a prince of both Greece and Denmark by virtue of his patrilineal descent from King George I of Greece and King Christian IX of Denmark; he was from birth in the line of succession to both thrones.Philip's four elder sisters were Margarita, Theodora, Cecilie, and Sophie. He was baptised in the Greek Orthodox rite at St. George's Church in the Old Fortress in Corfu. In the summer of 1946, the King granted Philip permission to marry Elizabeth. Before the official announcement of their engagement in July 1947, Philip stopped using his Greek and Danish royal titles and styles, became a naturalised British subject, and adopted his maternal grandparents' surname Mountbatten. He married Elizabeth on 20 November 1947. The day before their wedding, the King granted Philip the style His Royal Highness. ✨ John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. He created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. [1]

✨ Although based in Paris, Sargent's parents moved regularly with the seasons to the sea and the mountain resorts in France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. His mother was convinced that traveling around Europe, and visiting museums and churches, would give young Sargent a satisfactory education. Early on, she gave him sketchbooks and encouraged drawing excursions. Although his education was far from complete, Sargent grew up to be a highly literate and cosmopolitan young man, accomplished in art, music, and literature. He was also fluent in English, French, Italian, and German. [2]

✨ Sargent was a lifelong bachelor with a wide circle of friends including both men and women such as Oscar Wilde (whom he was neighbors with for several years), lesbian author Violet Paget, and his likely lover Albert de Belleroche, whom he met in 1882 and traveled with frequently. A surviving drawing speculatively may hint that Sargent might have used Belleroche as a model for Madame X, his most infamous work. Recent scholarship has speculated that Sargent was a homosexual man, based on statements by his friends and associations, the way his works challenge 19th-century notions of gender difference, and some nude male portraits, including that of Belleroche, which hung in his Chelsea dining room. One client wrote that when in Venice, Sargent "was only interested in the Venetian gondoliers" while another said that his sex life "was notorious in Paris, and in Venice, positively scandalous." [3]

✨ After securing a commission, Sargent would visit the client's home to see where the painting was to hang. He would often review a client's wardrobe to pick suitable attire. He usually required eight to ten sittings from his clients, although he would try to capture the face in one sitting. He usually kept up pleasant conversation and sometimes he would take a break and play the piano for his sitter. Finally, he would select an appropriate frame. In 1907, at the age of fifty-one, Sargent officially closed his studio. Relieved, he stated, "Painting a portrait would be quite amusing if one were not forced to talk while working…What a nuisance having to entertain the sitter and to look happy when one feels wretched." [4]

✨ Despite his success as one of the most sought–after portraitists of the late Victorian era, Sargent eventually became exasperated by the whim and vanities of prominent sitters. By 1909 he had abandoned conventional portraiture in order to "experiment with more imaginary fields." The woman in Repose is Sargent's niece, Rose-Marie Ormond. In keeping with his newfound preference for informal figure studies, Sargent did not create a traditional portrait; rather, he depicted Rose–Marie as a languid, anonymous figure absorbed in poetic reverie. The reclining woman, casually posed in an atmosphere of elegiac calm and consummate luxury, seems the epitome of nonchalance—the painting's original title. Sargent seems to have been documenting the end of an era, for the lingering aura of fin–de–siècle gentility and elegant indulgence conveyed in Repose would soon be shattered by massive political and social upheaval in the early 20th century. [5]
