Bowler, the UK’s foremost performance Land Rover Defender experts, will showcase the new Bowler Extreme conversion at Caffeine and Machine this evening, Wednesday 29th June.
The conversion showcases the knowledge and expertise Bowler has gained from decades of off-road competition and joins the existing Bowler Fast Road Defender conversion. Most noticeable is the Bowler Extreme’s stance, a combination of massive 35-inch BFGoodrich tyres with bead-lock performance alloys and bespoke front and rear suspension providing a 2 inch lift all round. The tyres are housed by Bowler’s new extended wheel arch kit. The front bumper is replaced with a lightweight Bowler bumper and finished with Bowler recovery points. An LED high-performance light package finished the front end makeover. An additional Lazer lights spotlight package can be added at the customer’s request. External protection is added in the form of an external rollcage and rockslider steps. The classic Bowler sill protectors give the signature finish. The exterior is finished with upgraded hinges, LED rear lights and a Bowler rear step kit. The passenger cabin receives the same attention to detail and features a bespoke leather/performance fabric material makeover. Both external paint and internal leather can be specified by the customer. Upgraded audio equipment, Bowler gear levers and a Momo steering wheel finish the interior. The Bowler Extreme also features the company’s signature Fast Road conversion, providing an increase in both torque and horsepower (175hp/450Nm) to match the aggressive stance of the car. The system uses a modified ECU and race intercooler. Braking is also improved with the addition of a Bowler big brake kit, utilising 4 piston calipers developed in partnership with Alcon and larger discs (334mm front, 297mm rear). The standard ABS and Traction Control systems are unaffected. The Bowler Extreme is available on a commission-only basis, with limited build slots available each calendar year. The Bowler demonstration car is based on a 110 dual cab pickup, with conversions available on 90, 110 and 130 donors. The car will be built alongside Bowler’s legendary Bulldog at the company’s Belper workshop. Bowler are able to source a donor vehicle or utilise a car already owned by the commissioning customer. Price for conversion of a customer-owned car will be dependent on model year and condition. PortBox2 is a RS-232 and RS485 full serial port to Ethernet converter. The remote serial port can be accessed in Windows as a Virtual Serial Port. Web-based configuration, full RS-232 (9 wires), 9th bit support (virtual parity).
PortBox2 is a RS-232 and RS485 serial port to Ethernet converter. PortBox2 contains a truly full RS-232 serial port (9 pins). RS-232/485 to Ethernet topology
VSP (Virtual Serial Port) The HW VSP is installed on the PC to create a virtual serial port (e.g. COM7) in the Windows OS. The full serial port of PortBox2 works like a physical port at the PC.
WEB   [Configuration]  Configuration and control of I/O over a WEB interface  
TCP/IP Server   [Telnet Client -> Server] PortBox2, as a TCP server, listens for incoming TCP connections from a computer (PC or server). When the connection is established, data in the internal buffer are transmitted, and then bidirectional communication can take place, similarly to a common "terminal server" or "device server". Parameters of the remote serial port can be controlled using RFC2217.
TCP/IP Client/Server    [Telnet Server <- Client] PortBox2 has received data from the serial port and is attempting to send it to the server. The unit tries to establish a connection to the specified outgoing IP address and port. If it fails in establishing a TCP connection, it waits in the TCP server mode and then tries to establish the connection again. Parameters of the remote serial port can be controlled using RFC2217.
UDP/IP Data are sent as UDP packets, without delivery acknowledgments.
Variable parity – 9-bit communication
The "Variable Parity" mode is primarily designed for remote control of the 9th parity bit for devices that use 9-bit communication protocols.
The remote 9th "parity" bit can be controlled in 2 ways:
Port configuration change using RFC2217 (NVT)
Compatible with various virtual serial ports but does not guarantee synchronous parameter change. The timing of NVT command processing is independent of serial port data.
"Variable Parity" mode – setting the parity bit for one following character
The VIRTUAL PARITY mode must be enabled in the configuration (&V: Variable Parity On).
Extension of the RFC2217 standard. Changes the polarity (with respect to the default setting) for a single character that follows the command.
The parity of a single character is changed (inverted) if the character is preceded by this 2-byte sequence: 0xFE 0x50.
Pay attention to 0xFF and 0xFE characters
Due to support for "NVT" and "Variable Parity" modes, it is necessary to treat 0xFF and 0xFE characters in the data stream as prefixes for NVT (0xFF) or Variable Parity (0xFE) control. As a result, to send a "0xFF" binary character over the serial interface, it needs to be sent twice over TCP/IP.
Example: 5 bytes are sent over TCP/IP – "0xFF 0xFF 0x41 0xFE 0xFE"; however, PortBox2 only sends 3 characters – "0xFF 0x41 0xFE". If the FF and FE characters are not doubled, they will be processed as control commands depending on the following characters!

Does the PortBox2 fit on a DIN rail? Yes, it is possible to add a standard DIN rail bracket – available as an accessory.
How can I configure the IP address of PortBox2? To set the IP address, run the "UDP Config" utility on a PC connected to the same network. Another option is to configure the unit over its serial port – see the manual.
How can I change the serial port speed (baudrate)? The default settings can be changed in the PortBox2 WEB setup. When using HW VSP (Virtual Serial Port) for Windows, the remote port adapts itself to the local port settings in the PC.  
Is it possible to extend a RS-232 line using the Ethernet by connecting two PortBox units back-to-back? Yes. Please see the manual for the recommended configuration of two PortBox units to forward RS-232 data between them.
Is it possible to use several virtual serial ports on a single PC with HW VSP? Yes. Use Multi HW VSP, it supports up to 100 remote ports on a single PC.
Is it possible to read/control all RS-232 signals (DSR, DTR, RI, CD)? Yes. RFC2217 allows reading and controlling all signals of a full RS-232 serial port over the Ethernet. However, if you need to connect digital inputs and inputs to the serial port, use our IP Relay or I/O Controller2 products.

A team of scientists have created new material class through the manufacturin remote communication  g of a stable crystalline metafluid. The pentamode metamaterial is extremely light and displays mechanical behavior that is determined by the acuteness and length of the individual “sugar loaves.”
A research team lead by Professor Martin Wegener at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has succeeded in realizing a new material class through the manufacturing of a stable crystalline metafluid, a pentamode metamaterial. Using new nanostructuring methods, these materials can now be realized for the first time with any conceivable mechanical properties. The researchers will present their results in the cover story of the May issue of Applied Physics Letters. (DOI 10.1063/1.4709436)
The Rubicon was crossed, so to speak, at the DFG Center for Functional Nanostructures (CFN) and at the Institute of Applied Physics (AP) in Karlsruhe during the past few months. Eventually, numerous three-dimensional transformation acoustics ideas, for example inaudibility cloaks, acoustic prisms or new loudspeaker concepts, could become reality in the near future.
So far, pentamodes, proposed in 1995 by Graeme Milton and Andrej Cherkaev, have been purely theoretical: The mechanical behavior of materials such as gold or water is expressed in terms of compression and shear parameters. Whereas the phenomenon that water, for example, can hardly be compressed in a cylinder is described through the compression parameter, the fact that it can be stirred in all directions using a spoon is expressed through the shear parameters.

The word penta is derived from ancient Greek and means “five”. In the case of water, the five shear parameters equal zero, and only one parameter, compression, differs from that value. In terms of parameters, the ideal state of a pentamode metamaterial corresponds to the state of water, which is why that material is referred to as a metafluid. Theoretically, any conceivable mechanical properties whatsoever can be obtained by varying the relevant parameters.
“Realizing a pentamode metamaterial is about as difficult as trying to build a scaffold from pins that must not touch but at their tips,” first author Dr. Muamer Kadic explains. “The Karlsruhe prototype has been manufactured from a polymer. The mechanical behavior of the material is determined by the acuteness and length of the individual “sugar loaves”. On the one hand, we must be capable of designing small sugar loaves in the nanometer range and connect them to one another at the right angle. On the other hand, the entire structure must eventually become as large as possible. Since the material itself contributes only little more than one percent to the respective volume, the composite obtained is extremely light.
“To obtain similar 3D results, as in tran M2M gateway sformation optics, transformation acoustics is exclusively dependent on metamaterials. In view of this, this first manufacture of our pentamode metamaterial is a quite significant success,” adds Tiemo Bückmann, who is about to receive his diploma at the Institute of Applied Physics and is responsible for realizi 3g router ng the structures of the new material by means of dip-in laser writing, a method that has been derived from direct laser writing developed by the Nanoscribe company.
In recent years, a Professor at the Institute of Applied Physics and CFN coordinator, Martin Wegener and his collaborators, have developed direct laser writing and, based on that method, established optical lithography of three-dimensional nanostructures. Numerous achievements of Wegener’s group in transformation optics e.g., the first three-dimensional cloak of invisibility in the range of visible light have been due to that technique.
