Pakistani Student, Sabika Sheikh, Killed In Texas School Firing

In a shooting incident in the United States, at least ten people including a Pakistani exchange student Sabika Sheikh were killed after a teenage classmate opened the fire in Texas High school. The attacker who got the shot gun and a revolver was identified as a 17 year old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a student from the Santa Fe High school. Police have arrested Dimitrios Pagourtzis and he could be awarded death penalty because of murder. According to Governor Greg Abbott, ten people died and another ten were injured “one of the most heinous attacks that we have ever seen in the history of Texas schools”. All the departed souls were identified as nine students and one tutor. Since August 2017, the Pakistani student identified as Sabika Sheikh who was studying at the school under the Kennedy- Lugar Youth Exchange programme and Study (YES) programme. In a letter sent to the YES programme students, Megan Lysaght the program manager at American Councils for International Education wrote: “It is with greatest sadness in my heart that I need to inform you that one of our YES students, Sabika Sheikh of Pakistan, was killed today in the school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. “Please know that the YES program is devastated by this loss and we will remember Sabika and her families in our thoughts and prayers. We will have a moment of silence in her memory today.” Pakistani Embassy in Washington DC confirmed the death of Sabika Sheikh in the deadly shooting. Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, “expressed heartfelt condolences for the victims of the tragic incident.” Sabika Left Family in Tears. Abdul Aziz the father of Pakistani student who lives in Karachi’s Gulshan e Iqbal said that Sabika was due to come back to Pakistan on June9. We all were waiting for her return. Further Aziz added she was the eldest among three sisters. Her father said that terrorist attacks can happen anywhere and such cruel act should be condemned. His brother added Sabika loved everyone and was ready to return home. Donald Trump Reaction US President Donald Trump in a tweet expressed grief over the terrible loss of life. He said, “We grieve for the terrible loss of life, and send our support and love to everyone affected by this horrible attack in Texas. To the students, families, teachers and personnel at Santa Fe High School – we are with you in this tragic hour, and we will be with you forever”. “My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others,” Trump said at the White House. Texas officials charged a 17-year-old student with murder in the shooting of 10 people, including fellow pupils, at his high school on Friday in an attack similar to the massacre at a Florida high school earlier this year. Students said a gunman, identified by law enforcement as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, opened fire in a classroom at Santa Fe High School shortly before 8 a.m. CT (1300 GMT) on Friday, and that they fled in panic after seeing classmates wounded and a fire alarm triggered a full evacuation. Ten people were hurt in the attack, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said. It was the latest in a long series of deadly shootings at U.S. schools. Seventeen teens and educators were shot dead at a Parkland, Florida, high school in February, a massacre that stirred the nation’s long-running debate over gun ownership. The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office identified Pagourtzis and said he had been charged with capital murder in a post on its Facebook page. More charges could follow.
